Southampton team news: Predicted Saints XI v Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Anfield

Show/hide article…

Southampton travel to Anfield for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie with Liverpool and it’s live on talkSPORT from 8pm.

Claude Puel’s troops have a slight advantage after their 1-0 victory at St Mary’s in the first leg two weeks ago, but they’ll be expecting a much tougher test on Merseyside.

And the Saints were hit with a recent injury blow, as key defender Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out of action for up to three months.

So who could Puel turn to for tonight’s game?

Check out talkSPORT’s predicted Southampton XI by scrolling through the gallery above.

Liverpool FC EFL Cup team news: How Jurgen Klopp’s side could line up v Southampton - with newly re-signed Philippe Coutinho

Show/hide article…

Liverpool will be hoping the Anfield crowd will help them come from behind to book a place in next month’s EFL Cup final.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds face a tough task when they come up against Southampton, who were 1-0 winners in the first leg thanks to Nathan Redmond’s strike.

Joel Matip is set to make his first start since December 11 - with the defender kept sidelined due to injury and uncertainty over his eligibility due to the Africa Cup of Nations fallout.

Captain Jordan Henderson has been playing with a heel problem but he is expected to play, while Klopp could alter the side which lost at home to Swansea on Saturday, with Daniel Sturridge tipped to start.

As they aim to book a EFL Cup final meeting with Manchester United or Hull City, who could line up for the Reds at Anfield?

EFL Cup semi-final second leg: What time does Liverpool v Southampton kick off, what TV channel is it on and can Jurgen Klopp’s side still reach the final?

Show/hide article…

We reach for the heights but we don’t know in this moment. But it’s not because of motivation or readiness. We will be ready on Wednesday.

We wanted to win the competition last year, when we reached the final. Of course we want to be part of the final but don’t just want that, we want to go and win it. The first step is to beat Southampton.

We’re still close enough to fight for nearly everything. OK, if Chelsea wins every game then we cannot fight, but for the rest we can.

If you saw us celebrating after the quarter-final, we were really happy to go to the semi-final. For us, we don’t judge this tournament. It’s the earliest possibility in a season [for a trophy] but we don’t care.

It looks like they pressed the EFL Cup between parts of the season. Nobody seems to care about it. The Premier League does not care about it, because we play Wednesday night and then have to play Saturday lunchtime. But we know how important it all is.

Yoshida: No change in approach

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida does not believe Southampton should change their approach against Liverpool, and should again be positive in their search for the first goal.

Saints won the opening leg of their EFL Cup semi-final 1-0, at St Mary’s, as they produced a dominant performance on home soil to give themselves a slender advantage.

They now head to Anfield for tonight’s decider, and Yoshida says the team should not look to be too protective, but again see if they can hurt Liverpool’s defence.

"We played very well in the last game against them,” said Yoshida. “Maybe we need to score a few more goals, but still we have an advantage.

“But let’s win the game. We shouldn’t think about a draw, because then they will start to punish us.

"It’s the same approach as usual. That’s the most important thing. The last game, against Leicester, we played well.

“If we score one goal away, it would be massive for us. That’s why we need to try to get the first goal there.”

Yoshida explained that there is a real sense of excitement among the squad ahead of this evening’s game, which will end with one team heading to Wembley, for the final, against either Manchester United or Hull City.

"Obviously, we are buzzing to play against Liverpool, at Anfield,” said Yoshida. “It’s one of the most difficult places to go and play, and one of the best stadiums in the world, so we need to make sure we are ready and that we get to a final.”

Saints must forget about Fonte and “move on”

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu has called on his Saints colleagues to put Jose Fonte’s departure behind them.

The Portuguese centre half, pictured, had helped shape Saints in this current era.

He had been a lynchpin through promotions from League One and Championship, before becoming a key player at the forefront as Saints became an establish Premier League force.

Romeu believes Fonte’s departure - he joined West Ham for £8m last Friday - is significant, but says the squad can’t dwell on it.

“It’s different now without Jose,” Romeu said.

“There are different players that have to step up.

“He was a leader in the squad and a leader in the dressing room, but football and life goes on and move on.

“Now we’ll be in another stage of our dressing room, but we have enough strong players to step up and to show that the dressing room is strong and still has plenty of leaders.

“Jose was there always helping the team, but players with him a bit longer will miss him or feel that a little bit more.

“Like I say, Jose is gone and so were other players last summer. We need to move on and keep going.

“This club has shown and has proved that whoever is going we keep our level.”
