Ref Watch: Will Arsene Wenger face FA action? Were Chelsea and Tottenham lucky?

Show/hide article…

Will Arsene Wenger be punished? Were Chelsea lucky? After a weekend brimming with controversy, Dermot Gallagher gives his take on the refereeing decisions.

Gallagher believes the FA will act on Wenger’s behaviour after he pushed fourth official Anthony Taylor following Burnley’s late penalty in Arsenal’s 2-1 win on Super Sunday, while the Gunners were awarded a controversial penalty of their own.

Elsewhere, Gallagher analyses Tottenham’s draw with Manchester City, and how Raheem Sterling should have been awarded a penalty at the Etihad, plus much more…

INCIDENT: Andre Gray shoves Shkodran Mustafi in the penalty area, but no penalty is awarded.

DERMOT’S VIEW: I think it’s a penalty, whether the referee hasn’t got the correct view, I don’t know, but I think the assistant has got to help him out there. It’s a penalty, I can’t deny it.

INCIDENT: Granit Xhaka is sent off for the second time in his short Arsenal career for a lunge on Steven Defour in the 65th minute.

DERMOT’S VIEW: Reputations count for nothing, but this is just a very bad tackle. In the current climate you cannot make a tackle like this. He’s gone two-footed, off the ground, led with his studs. That challenge is just not acceptable now, and every referee is going to send you off for that. I think because Jon Moss took the time to get it right, everybody bought into it a lot more.

INCIDENT: With the score at 1-0 to Arsenal, referee Jon Moss pointed to the spot after Francis Coquelin’s foul on Ashley Barnes. Boyhood Gunners fan Andre Gray converted from 12 yards.

DERMOT’S VIEW: I think what upset Arsene Wenger is the time it came in the game. Is there any debate? Not for me. It’s a clumsy tackle. he’s made it without thinking, and it’s a penalty. It’s 90+3 minutes, maybe they thought they had the win and it has boiled over, but it’s a penalty.

INCIDENT: The Arsenal manager was sent to the stands by Moss for complaining following the decision to award Burnley a penalty. Wenger had a heated exchange with fourth official Anthony Taylor before walking to stand in the tunnel, and was caught on camera pushing the fourth official before stewards intervened.

DERMOT’S VIEW: He’s got to go away from being able to see from that area, that’s what Anthony is saying to him. It’s not a good reaction, one that I’m sure will be followed up by the FA. But I must say that the steward has done well there to step in between them.

Wenger was asked to go away, but he stood his ground and didn’t move, that’s why this is different. It’s always nice to hear somebody apologise, as Wenger has. He said quite rightly afterwards that he shouldn’t have opened his mouth.

INCIDENT: With seconds remaining, Moss penalised Ben Mee’s high boot on Laurent Koscielny - who appeared offside from the initial cross - handing Alexis Sanchez the chance to win it.

DERMOT’S VIEW: I think there’s two decisions. The first one, the referee has got right, his boot is too high, even though Koscielny ducks. It has to be a penalty.

What was unfortunate for Jon Moss is that he’s got the right decision in my eyes, and when that ball is played in the assistant hasn’t made the right decision because Koscielny is offside. I feel sorry for the assistants because they have a tough job, but I think that’s one of the easier decisions because Koscielny is the first player in line with him. For whatever reason, he didn’t give offside.

INCIDENT: After Hugo Lloris failed to clear the ball with a diving header outside the area, the Frenchman deflected the ball onto Leroy Sane’s hand before the Man City man scored into the empty net.

DERMOT’S VIEW: It strikes his hand, but it has to be deliberate for it to be penalised, and when you see how close he is to the goalkeeper, I don’t think he has any intention to handle the ball. It has just hit him.

It’s impossible for the referee to give, however, because Sane’s body shields the view.

INCIDENT: As Raheem Sterling raced through on goal, Kyle Walker pushes the City man on the shoulder from behind, putting him off balance before a weak shot went straight at Lloris.

DERMOT’S VIEW: It should be a penalty and a red card. This raises a few more issues. We don’t want to encourage players to go down, but in that instance, what we have to do in return is say: “OK, he didn’t go down, but he’s clearly being shoved off balance and it’s a penalty.”

INCIDENT: With the score at 1-0 to Chelsea in the second half, Marcos Alonso kicks the back of Abel Hernandez’s heel in the penalty area after miscuing a clearance. No penalty is given by the officials, despite the incident occurring in front of the linesman.

DERMOT’S VIEW: Alonso is lucky. Very, very lucky. And I think he knows it too, his reaction tells it. It just wasn’t a wise decision to make. He has trod on his heel, and again it’s one that I thought the assistant could have seen, rather than the referee.

INCIDENT: With Watford 2-1 up and Cherries probing, an injured Christian Kabasele decided to lie on the floor and signal to the bench. As it wasn’t a head injury, Bournemouth played on, Andrew Surman picked out Benik Afobe, who moved into the space in behind Kabasele before scoring.

DERMOT’S VIEW: It’s interesting because he just goes down, the referee is convinced it’s not a head injury, so the play goes on. The difficulty there is, with him going down with nobody near him, you may question if he has fainted, passed out, nobody knew. But the player was moving and the referee was quite right to play on.

Soares assists FPL managers

Show/hide article…

Cedric Soares (£4.8m) registered a first assist of the season to help Southampton to a 3-0 win over Leicester City, picking up three Fantasy Premier League bonus points.

His cross for the Saints’ opening goal was one of three key passes he supplied in Sunday’s contest, with a trio of successful tackles also helping the right-back top score with 40 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

James Ward-Prowse (£5.0m) converted Soares’ cross for Southampton’s opener. That goal, along with 14 recoveries, earned the midfielder 33 in the BPS and two additional points.

Saints produced a clean sweep in Sunday’s win, with three players sharing a BPS total of 24 to earn a single bonus point each.

Left-back Ryan Bertrand (£5.4m) completed 80% of his 61 passes, creating two chances for team-mates, while Dusan Tadic (£7.0m) also provided two key passes, in addition to a converted penalty for Southampton’s third goal.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Fraser Forster (£5.1m) made two saves and seven recoveries to pick up his first bonus point of the campaign.

Tadic’s performance was recognised in the ICT Index as he top scored with a tally of 12.0.

The Serbia international provided nine crosses and 18 successful passes in the attacking third to record 39 for Creativity.

Jay Rodriguez (£6.3m) recorded the highest Threat score on display at St Mary’s; his total of 60 comprised three efforts on goal, all from inside the Foxes’ penalty area.

Soares’ 12-point haul, allied with Southampton’s first clean sheet since Gameweek 16, will revive FPL interest in the full-back.

Rotation in Claude Puel’s squad is still a concern, however, with the Saints facing two domestic cup ties before a Gameweek 23 trip to Swansea City.

Maya Yoshida (£4.2m) also continues to offer an even cheaper route into Puel’s defence, as he made a seventh consecutive start in all competitions.

However, with Virgil van Dijk (£5.8m) suffering an ankle injury in Sunday’s victory, there could now be doubts surrounding Saints’ clean-sheet prospects for the visit to Liberty Stadium.

In attack, the form of Rodriguez, Tadic and Ward-Prowse requires monitoring over the coming Gameweeks.

The latter has started four of the last five outings and created nine chances over that run - more than any other Southampton asset.

Tadic earned his first 90 minutes since Gameweek 8 in Sunday’s win and tops the Saints’ ranks for chances created over the season (36), while he is second only to Nathan Redmond (£5.8m) for efforts on goal (38).

Rodriguez could emerge as the key asset once the Southampton schedule clears and the rotation with Shane Long (£6.1m) in the central striker role is calmed.

Having largely overlooked them as a source of points so far this season, FPL managers have been given little reason to reassess Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City.

A Gameweek 23 trip to Burnley provides a stern test and, with both Manchester United and Liverpool due next at the King Power Stadium, their prospects appear limited.

Puel issues van Dijk injury update

Show/hide article…

Saints are anxiously waiting on the results of a scan on Virgil van Dijk’s injured foot to discover whether he can face Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Anfield.

The big centre half was forced off early in the second half of the 3-0 win over Leicester yesterday after Jamie Vardy stood on his left foot.

Van Dijk is a major doubt for Wednesday night, as is Steven Davis, who has missed the last three matches after picking up a knock, and Claude Puel is waiting to find out whether his star men can play in a massive game.

He said: “Steven comes back a little and we will see this tomorrow.

“For van Dijk he has had a scan and I await the result. For the moment I don’t know the situation.

“It’s a good kick on his ankle and he cannot continue the game yesterday for example.

“I think it’s not serious but I don’t know if he can participate for this game.

“We will see for the next day before the game.”

Southampton sweat on Virgil van Dijk injury ahead of Liverpool tie

Show/hide article…

Southampton are sweating on the fitness of captain and star defender Virgil van Djik for the EFL Cup semi-final second leg with Liverpool.

Sportsmail understands that Van Dijk is losing his race to be fit for the tie, which Southampton lead 1-0, after he limped out of their win against Leicester City with an ankle injury on Sunday. The player had a scan on Monday.

Southampton let want-away Jose Fonte leave for West Ham for £8million last week leaving them with Maya Yoshida and the inexperienced 22-year-old Jack Stephens their only pair of fit centre-backs available to face the might of Jurgen Klopp’ s attack at Anfield on Wednesday.

‘For Van Dijk he has had a scan and I await the result,’ Claude Puel said. ‘For the moment I don’t know the situation. It’s a good kick on his ankle and he cannot continue the game against Leicester for example.

'I think it’s not serious but I don’t know if he can participate for this game. We will see for the next day before the game.’

Puel revealed that the club are exploring their options and could move for another centre-back in the January transfer window.

They have Florin Gardos coming back from injury, but he has not played for the first team for almost two years after injuring his knee ligaments in 2015.

‘We study the possibility or not to replace Fonte,’ Puel added. ‘It is important the possibility to the end of the market.

'We have for the moment at centre back van Dijk, Yoshida, Gardos and Stephens and we see if opportunity or no or we stay with our confidence with this player. I don’t know for the moment and we will see this until the end of the market.’

On the prospect of signing Everton’s Phil Jagielka, Puel replied: ‘No comment.’

Jurgen Klopp hints that Champions League qualification is Liverpool’s main target after Swansea stumble

Show/hide article…

“As a much as I like Sadio it’s not allowed we think the problems we had is because we miss Sadio. We scored enough goals to win the games. The problem is the whole defence work of the team. If it was so easy you buy one new player and all the problems are solved I would do it.”

Klopp will not concede Liverpool’s title hopes, but admitted there was a need to recalibrate targets – particularly in terms of ensuring his side qualifies for next season’s Champions League.

“We fight in each game, that is the most important thing, and then we see what happens around that, but in cup competitions the target is win the tournament,” he said.

“If Chelsea win all their games there is no chance for any other team. For us it is still absolutely important to finish the season as good as possible whatever it means and then we will see. We have quality to fight for the Champions League. If we do this and are close enough at the decisive moment you can fight for a little bit more. Now we have two games before we play Chelsea. We fight for everything and that is all. We don’t look for excuses. What we need is to fight.”

Southampton FC transfer news: Napoli told to lower asking price for Saints target Manolo Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Napoli must lower their asking price for Southampton target Manolo Gabbiadini, according to reports in Italy.

The striker has been told he can leave the Serie A club this month after they completed the signing of Leonardo Pavoletti from Genoa.

Several English sides have taken an interest in Gabbiadini, including Everton, West Brom and West Ham.

Southampton have shown the most intent, though, and they reportedly submitted an offer of £13m last Friday.

That, however, is quite far off Napoli’s asking price of £20m and the Serie A club are expected to reject the bid.

But, according to Radio Crc, Napoli must lower their value for Gabbiadini if they want to sell him before the January transfer window closes.

Other than Southampton, no formal offer has been made and, with time running out, the player’s entourage have reportedly told the Serie A side to slash his asking price by £7m.

Puel talks transfers

Show/hide article…

The centre-back departed St Mary’s for West Ham United last week, and Puel says the club are keeping abreast of possible replacements.

He reiterated, however, that they would only bring someone in who would improve the squad and that he retains full faith in the players he already has.

“We will study possibilities to replace him,” Puel told reporters at a press conference ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool. "That’s normal. There is a possibility until the end of the market.

"For the moment at centre back we have Maya Yoshida, van Dijk, Gardos and Jack Stephens, and we will see if we have an opportunity, or if we will stay with our confidence in these players. We will see at the end of the market.

“For me, I am happy with all the squad and I respect my players. I am happy with these players and if one or two come into the squad then I think it will be important they can bring something more than the players for the moment in the squad.”
