World Cup 2018: Republic of Ireland’s Shane Long likely to miss Austria qualifier

Show/hide article…

Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long is likely to miss next month’s World Cup qualifier against Austria after breaking a metatarsal.

The 30-year-old was injured during Southampton’s Premier League victory over Middlesbrough last Saturday.

“Shane is unlucky with his broken metatarsal. We will see him next season,” said Saints boss Claude Puel.

The Republic, level on points with Group D leaders Serbia, face Austria in Dublin on 11 June.

Prior to that, they face Mexico in New Jersey on 2 June and Uruguay in Dublin two days later. Both games are friendlies.

Long missed the away match against Austria in November, when James McClean’s goal gave the Republic a 1-0 victory.

Claude Puel insists he’ll still be Southampton manager next season

Show/hide article…

Defiant Southampton manager Claude Puel has dismissed suggestions he faces the sack.

Puel’s future on the south coast will be decided at an end of season meeting with Saints’ vice-chairman Les Reed next week.

As MirrorSport revealed yesterday (Friday), the Frenchman is battling a dressing room revolt ahead of what could be his last game in charge at home to Stoke tomorrow (Sunday).

But when asked if he was confident of keeping his job, Puel said: “There is no question for me about this.

“I have a contract with Southampton. My wish is to stay concentrated about this last game and finish well.

“Many players have improved this season and it is very interesting for the future for them. It is a strong quad now with many players.”

A number of big-name Saints star are unhappy with Puel’s tactics and training methods but he said: “I keep my concentration about the team and about this last game. I don’t want to comment about this, it’s not interesting for me.

“I saw good work in the training session and this is the most important thing for me after all the speculation.

“I am satisfied about the strong work all season because it is a long season with many games. There is always a good attitude and god spirit in training, sometimes without any reward.

“We are looking to finish the last game strongly. We have the opportunity to finish high up the table.”

Marco Silva admits he has decided his Hull future

Show/hide article…

Marco Silva admits he has already decided his Hull future.

The Tigers boss produced an impressive upturn in results at the KCOM Stadium following his January arrival, although he was ultimately unable to prevent the club’s immediate return to the Sky Bet Championship.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and is wanted by Watford and Southamption.

Silva will meet City chairman Assem Allam next week before publicly declaring his decision and said: "I have in my mind (a decision) but the first person who will listen to this situation is the chairman and our board.

"We need to talk about many, many things - it’s not only if I want (to stay) or not.

"We need to look for the future of the club. We need to look as well what is my goal for my career. We started to talk during this week and we’ll meet again next week.

“It’s important we keep some things inside the club, and not say them outside. Of course when we decide we’ll explain more about the situation.”

Silva insists he has not been in contact with any other team, saying: "It’s impossible for me to talk about the other clubs.

"First, because Hull City deserve all my respect. We have one more game to play and this club, Watford in this case, have one more game to play. Up until now, nothing has happened.

“This is the truth and it is impossible to talk about the clubs, A, B, C or D. The most important thing is I’m here to work at Hull City, not to talk about other clubs.”

Stat Pack: Southampton vs Stoke City

Show/hide article…

Take a look at the key stats ahead of Southampton’s final game of the season against Stoke City.

These two teams have met nine times in the Premier League; with them both winning two apiece and drawing the other five.

  • This fixture has seen three red cards in the last five games in all competitions; including each of the last two Premier League contests.

Southampton hosted Stoke City on the last day of the season in the 2012-13 campaign; when Rickie Lambert equalised after current Stoke City striker Peter Crouch opened the scoring for the Potters.

Southampton have lost just once in 10 final day home games in the Premier League (W5 D4), a loss against Manchester United in 2005 which confirmed relegation for Southampton.

After losing each of their first three Premier League final day contests, Stoke are unbeaten in their last five (W3 D2), including wins in each of the last three.

Stoke will finish in the bottom half for the first season since 2012/13, which ended with Tony Pulis’ departure from the club.

With one game to go, the Potters (41 points) are one point below their previous worst points tally in a full Premier League season (42 in 2012-13).

Glen Johnson could make his 350th Premier League appearance in this match; 14 years and three months after making his debut in the competition (January 2003).

Mark Hughes will be looking for his 150th Premier League victory as a manager in this match – only six managers have reached his landmark (Ferguson, Wenger, Redknapp, Moyes, Allardyce and Mourinho).

Southampton v Stoke preview: Mark Hughes eyes season-ending win

Show/hide article…

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes is hoping to end the campaign on a high with victory against Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.

Stoke head to the south coast having won only one of their last 10 matches and it is a run which has contributed strongly to what will be the club’s lowest league finish under the Welshman, after ending each of the last three seasons in ninth place.

Hughes, however, is targeting a morale-boosting victory this weekend, saying: "In terms of our own well-being, it would be better to go into the summer on the back of a victory.

"We have one more opportunity to get more points on the board and we will look to do that on Sunday.

"It’s fair to say that we haven’t hit our targets this season, so it is disappointing. It isn’t disastrous though, I don’t feel.

“Everybody wants to be stimulated by progressive seasons, and of the four I have been here this is the first that we have fallen short.”

Meanwhile, Southampton manager Claude Puel is reportedly at odds with his playing squad ahead of the club’s final match of the season.

The Saints squad are said to have grown frustrated with the Frenchman’s sweeping rotation policy in his debut campaign in charge of the south coast club.

The former Monaco midfielder, however, moved to play down those suggestions on Friday.

“I keep my conversation about the team private, and to prepare for this last game,” Puel added.

"Other things I don’t want to comment about. I don’t know what it is, and it’s not interesting for me to comment.

"Just the other day, I saw good work in training and good concentration and this is the most important for me.

"I am satisfied about the strong work all season because it’s a long season with many games. Sometimes it was fantastic, and they always give a good attitude and good spirit in every training session and every game, sometimes without the good reward.

Forward Shane Long will miss the game with a broken metatarsal. Meanwhile, Cedric Soares, who was substituted in the goalless draw against Manchester United on Wednesday, and Ryan Bertrand are both doubts and Charlie Austin is pushing for his first start since December.

Marko Arnautovic looks set to miss the trip to St Mary’s.The midfielder had to be substituted against Arsenal last weekend following a shoulder charge from Rob Holding, which earned the Gunners defender a yellow card, and he has subsequently had a plaster cast fitted around his elbow.

Ibrahim Afellay (knee) and Stephen Ireland (broken leg) are long-term absentees as well.

These two teams have met nine times in the Premier League; with them both winning two apiece and drawing the other five.

This fixture has seen three red cards in the last five games in all competitions; including each of the last two Premier League contests.

Southampton hosted Stoke on the last day of the season in the 2012-13 campaign; when Rickie Lambert equalised after current Stoke striker Peter Crouch opened the scoring for the Potters.

After losing each of their first three Premier League final day contests, Stoke are unbeaten in their last five (W3 D2), including wins in each of the last three

Southampton haven’t scored in a long time but they had enough chances against Man Utd with Sergio Romero very good in goal. I have to give the win to Southampton, I thought they were very unlucky on Wednesday night.

Southampton are odds-on with Sky Bet at 3/4 to bag the home win, with Stoke priced at 7/2 and the draw is 14/5. Manolo Gabbiadini is the favourite to score first at 7/2, for the away side Crouch and Saido Berahino are priced at 15/2. The Saints are 66/1 outsiders to fall into the bottom half this season, while for Stoke a top-half finish next season is priced at 11/4.

Show/hide article…

Vokins, who came on as a second-half substitute, and the Three Lions were beaten in the cruellest way in Croatia, having taken the lead on 18 minutes through Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Spain then fought back to level on 33 minutes before England restored their lead in the second half through Phil Foden’s low left-footed drive.

It wasn’t until six minutes into added time that Nacho Diaz headed in José Alonso’s late corner to bring Spain level and force penalties.

Aidan Barlow was first up for England and the Man United man converted, before Rhian Brewster and Joel Latibeaudiere missed. Spain then netted all four of their spot-kicks to ensure they were crowned European Champions.
