Puel confirms first choice penalty taker

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has insisted that Manolo Gabbiadini will continue to be Saints’ first choice penalty taker despite his miss against Manchester United.

The Italian striker had his spot kick saved by Sergio Romero, the third penalty Saints have failed to convert in the space of just five matches with Dusan Tadic and Shane Long missing the others.

However, Puel has faith in Gabbiadini and confirmed he will be on penalty duty again assuming he plays in the final game of the season against Stoke on Sunday.

Puel said: “If he starts the game then yes if there is a penalty it will be for him. We will see.

“I hope we can have a penalty and we will score the next of course because the three last were no good. It was always different players but I have confidence for the next perhaps on Sunday.”

Puel will definitely be without Shane Long for the finale at St Mary’s with the striker having broken a metatarsal. Full backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares are also injury doubts.

Charlie Austin will feature at some point, but Puel refused to confirm whether he would get a first start since December.

“We will see,” said Puel. “He is available and it’s interesting to see him.

“I cannot give a starting team but I hope he can play some minutes and I don’t know how long but he will play.”

Southampton FC news: Claude Puel ‘comfortable’ at St Mary’s despite exit reports

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel is refusing to look beyond his club’s final match of the season amid speculation he will be sacked.

The Saints host Stoke at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday in what will be their concluding match of a largely disappointing campaign.

Although Southampton reached the final of the EFL Cup, they failed to progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League and will finish the Premier League season with their lowest points tally in four years.

Frenchman Puel signed a three-year deal last summer but it has been reported that Sunday’s match could be his last in charge; Saints’ executive director Les Reed will review his performance over the season next week.

“I am under contract and I am comfortable with Southampton,” Puel said.

"My work and my wish, is just to stay concentrated about this last game and finish well.

“We have an opportunity to finish up in the table and it’s a good thing after this long and difficult season. We are lucky about this and that is the most important thing.”

Puel is unpopular among the club’s supporters - he was subjected to boos during Southampton’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United earlier this week which marked the club’s fourth consecutive home match in which they have failed to score - while they have grown frustrated with his negative tactics, too.

Meanwhile Puel is also reported to be at odds with his playing squad, who are said to have grown frustrated with his sweeping rotation policy.

The former Monaco midfielder however, moved to play down those suggestions on Friday.

“I keep my conversation about the team private, and to prepare for this last game,” Puel added.

"Other things I don’t want to comment about. I don’t know what it is, and it’s not interesting for me to comment.

"Just the other day, I saw good work in training and good concentration and this is the most important for me.

"I am satisfied about the strong work all season because it’s a long season with many games. Sometimes it was fantastic, and they always give a good attitude and good spirit in every training session and every game, sometimes without the good reward.

“I say congratulations for all this good work all season.”

Loan report: How have your club’s loanees fared this season?

Show/hide article…

The fickle nature of football means players not featuring regularly are quickly forgotten: Bill Shankly famously made a habit of blanking players who were injured or unavailable. It is much the same with loanees. Who else will admit that they forgot Victor Moses was still a Chelsea player at the start of this season?

Mostly, players are loaned out because they are inexperienced or surplus to requirements, but occasionally a player such as Moses can return and be like a new signing. Who might be that man for your club next season?

Mark Lawrenson predictions: How the final Premier League table would look if pundits tips came true

Show/hide article…

Liverpool should finish the Premier League season unbeaten as they finish top of the pile.

That is, according to Mark Lawrenson’s week-by-week predictions.

The football pundit’s weekly tips for the BBC have been recorded with each scoreline and a final table has now been calculated.

With the final games of the season taking place this weekend, the 59-year-old has submitted his last forecast for the campaign, and once again he can’t see Liverpool losing.

It makes interesting reading to see where your team would be based on Lawro’s predictions.

Some of his calls have been pretty good, though predicting zero defeats for his old club wasn’t so impressive.

Southampton vs Stoke City team news: Squads revealed, injuries and more

Show/hide article…

Forward Shane Long will miss Southampton’s final match of the season against Stoke at St Mary’s Stadium with a broken metatarsal.

Cedric Soares, who was substituted in the goalless draw against Manchester United on Wednesday, and Ryan Bertrand are both doubts.

Charlie Austin is pushing for his first start since December.

Marko Arnautovic looks set to miss Stoke’s trip to the south coast.

The midfielder had to be substituted against Arsenal last weekend following a shoulder charge from Rob Holding, which earned the Gunners defender a yellow card, and he has subsequently had a plaster cast fitted around his elbow.

Ibrahim Afellay (knee) and Stephen Ireland (broken leg) are long-term absentees for the Potters.

The Prediction Challenge: Martin Keown vs Jack Gaughan

Show/hide article…

Welcome to The Prediction Challenge.

It’s what millions of us do every day - predicting what the score will be in a Premier League match.

Whether it’s a thumping 4-0 home win, a sneaky three points on the road or a 0-0 bore draw, let’s be honest – we all think we can tip the outcome of the next game.

Well, now we’ve challenged Sportsmail’s experts to test their prediction power.

Each week, we’ll ask one of our star columnists to go head to head with one of our top team of reporters.

They will offer their prediction for each Premier League match - and explain why they went for that score.

This week, it’s our columnist Martin Keown against reporter Jack Gaughan … and don’t forget to tell us your predictions by leaving a comment below.

All matches on Sunday at 3pm

Martin Keown: Arsenal will sign off on a positive note ahead of the Cup final. Everton have made big improvements this season but Arsenal will be too good. Arsenal 2-0 Everton.

Jack Gaughan: Surely the Gunners are going to put on a show? You’d hope so after the season they’ve endured and with a slim chance of reaching the Champions League. They need results to go there way. Arsenal 2-1 Everton.

Martin Keown: A very disappointing season for West Ham will end with defeat at Burnley, who will continue their good home form. Burnley 1-0 West Ham.

Jack Gaughan: West Ham were on the beach last week against Liverpool and Burnley will want to finish their home campaign with yet another win. Burnley 2-1 West Ham.

Martin Keown: Chelsea can create history by winning their 30th Premier League game of the season. With the prospect of a Double on the horizon Chelsea will want to get the job done early. Conte will use his squad wisely ahead of the Cup final. Chelsea 3-0 Sunderland.

Jack Gaughan: A big finale, Antonio Conte hopes. Goals to be had against a wretched Sunderland side - this should be exceptionally one-sided. Chelsea 4-0 Sunderland.

Martin Keown: Who would bet against Harry Kane scoring another hat-trick? Tottenham have shown they are stronger mentally and Kane chasing a personal milestone has made life easier for them. Hull 0-3 Tottenham.

Jack Gaughan: Spurs are still relentless despite sewing up second spot already and showed that against Leicester on Thursday night. Same again here. Hull 0-3 Tottenham.

Martin Keown: The 6-1 defeat by Spurs will have been a smack in the face for Craig Shakespeare. Another loss would harm his job prospects and this will really test his relationship with the players. Leicester 2-1 Bournemouth.

Jack Gaughan: Craig Shakespeare will be hurt by Thursday and want a reaction, while Bournemouth are hoping to cling on to their top 10 finish. Leicester 1-1 Bournemouth.

Martin Keown: I cannot see anything other than a Liverpool win. If they can’t beat Boro then they don’t deserve to be in the Champions League. Liverpool 3-1 Middlesbrough.

Jack Gaughan: Could it be nervy? Liverpool fans are hoping not, needing one final win to make sure they’re back in the Champions League. Liverpool 2-0 Middlesbrough.

Martin Keown: Palace will have their party hats on and can finally enjoy a Premier League game after playing under such pressure. United won’t want to lose heading into the Europa League final… so I can see them equalling their record of 11 draws at home! Man United 1-1 Crystal Palace.

Jack Gaughan: A game Jose Mourinho would rather do without. A second string again, a second rate performance again. Man United 1-1 Crystal Palace.

Martin Keown: Southampton are without a goal in four games and that run will extend against a Stoke side who don’t do a lot away from home. Southampton 0-0 Stoke.

Jack Gaughan: Tough to call. Claude Puel looks on the way out whereas Stoke have faltered badly and could finish as low as 16th. Southampton 0-1 Stoke.

Martin Keown: West Brom’s season has tailed off. I expect Swansea to win a tight game. Swansea 2-1 West Brom.

Jack Gaughan: West Brom have struggled for results recently and Tony Pulis could look to grind out a draw to make sure they stay in the top half. Swansea 0-0 West Brom.

Martin Keown: The wheels have well and truly come off at Watford, losing each of their last five games. A comfortable Manchester City win. Watford 0-3 Manchester City.

Jack Gaughan: City only need a draw but they will hunt for goals. Watford are all over the place, with Walter Mazzarri leaving. Watford 1-3 Manchester City.

Why the Premier League’s ‘meaningless’ final day is still worth more than £100m

Show/hide article…

The title race and battle to avoid relegation ended last week and the European places have been all but decided. Yet there are more than 100 million reasons why there is still plenty to play for on the final day of the Premier League season.

A record £104.4 million in prize money is up for grabs tomorrow, as clubs scramble for as big a helping as possible from the league’s vast pot of merit payments.

Almost two-thirds of Premier League clubs go into their final game with their place in the final standings undecided, and therefore facing what, for many, could be their single most lucrative top-flight match ever.

That is almost certainly the case for Leicester City, whose 6-1 home thrashing by Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night ensured up to £15.2 million would be at stake in their match at Bournemouth.

The deposed champions could theoretically finish anywhere between eighth and 16th, depending on their result and those elsewhere, with each place in the table worth an additional £1.9 million in prize money. Bournemouth have up to £6.6 million riding on the outcome of the game, given they could end up between eighth and 12th.
