Key battle: Dusan Tadic v Eric Dier

Show/hide article…

If Southampton are to end a run of three successive defeats against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday they will need Dusan Tadic to be at his best, writes Sky Sports’ Ollie Francis.

Tadic set up both goals in Southampton’s only Premier League win against Spurs since 2005, a 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane in May 2016.

The Serb leads the way for the club in assists and chances created since his PL debut in August 2014, underlining his importance going forward.

And encouragingly for Saints, only Gylfi Sigurdsson, with 28, has more assists by players from clubs outside the “Big Six” than Tadic’s 27 since the start of 2014/15.

The responsibility to stem Tadic’s creativity could fall to Eric Dier, a mainstay of the Spurs team whether in defence or midfield.

He has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for Spurs, with only Christian Eriksen (132) and Hugo Lloris (128) playing more PL matches under Mauricio Pochettino than Dier’s 124.

Primarily in the team for his defensive capabilities, only Jan Vertonghen, who has played 112 minutes more, has made more interceptions and tackles this season.

Furthermore only Eriksen (267) and Dele Alli (244) have covered more distance than Dier’s 231km this term.

The 24-year-old has been on the winning side in five of his seven PL appearances against Southampton and has not won more against any other club in the competition.

Stopping Tadic at St Mary’s Stadium will be key to continuing that run.

Pochettino marks Premier League anniversary with return to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pochettino marks his Premier League anniversary in a fitting manner this weekend as he takes Tottenham back to the club that brought him to England, Southampton.

The Argentine arrived on the south coast five years ago this week, a surprise name from Espanyol to replace Nigel Adkins the same day the fan-favourite manager was sacked.

After a Monday night 0-0 draw with Everton in his league bow, Pochettino revolutionised the way Southampton played over the course of 59 further games before leaving them on the cusp of European football for Tottenham.

The foundations laid by Pochettino saw that European dream realised under Ronald Koeman, whose final game before joining Everton saw Southampton qualify for the Europa League group stage with a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Having left the club very much on the up, Pochettino returns to find his former employers in a sorry state.

After an eighth-placed Premier League finish and an EFL Cup final outing in the bag last season, few managers would expect to lose their job. However, the toxic atmosphere amongst the fans and, in some places, the squad towards Claude Puel sealed the Frenchman’s fate after just one season at St. Mary’s.

The assumption was that, under Mauricio Pellegrino, the football – deemed too boring during Puel’s reign – would return to a standard or style which mirrored that played under Pochettino.

That assumption is yet to materialise. After years of being held up as an example to all others outside of the Premier League’s top six, Southampton are now drifting listlessly into a relegation battle, with Saturday’s results seeing the Saints fall into the bottom three.

Following Pochettino’s departure in the summer of 2014, there was little expectation that the club would go on to hit the heights of recent years. As Pochettino turned Tottenham into Premier League title challengers and back-to-back Champions League qualifiers in three season, Southampton secured three more top-eight finishes. This current St. Mary’s malaise was far from anyone’s mind.

Pochettino’s fourth return to the south coast, with wins on his previous three, not only presents a daunting challenge but a reminder of what Southampton had, what they were and what they are now becoming.

New arrivals could certainly lift the mood this month. Though, the wait goes on. Since Pellegrino revealed he was expecting two this week, the club have missed out on former player Theo Walcott and seen precisely zero new announcements.

There remain links with Monaco’s Guido Carrillo, a striker who has already worked under the Saints boss, and fresh reports suggest a club-record move for Spartak Moscow’s Quincy Promes.

However, regardless of reports and rumour, another defeat to a former manager who has gone from strength to strength since that Monday night five years ago, could be the final straw for many Southampton fans.

Southampton vs Tottenham | Teams, streams, predictions and odds

Show/hide article…

Tottenham travel to Southampton on Sunday less than a month after scoring five against them at Wembley.

Spurs will look to extend their unbeaten run while piling more pressure on Mauricio Pellegrino with the Saints on a 10-game winless streak.

Southampton are beaten Spurs just once since 2005, becoming the final away team to win at White Hart Lane with victory at the end of the 2015-16 season, and have shipped 11 goals on their previous three encounters.

Southampton host Tottenham at St. Mary’s with kick-off scheduled for 4pm on Sunday, January 21.

The match is available via Now TV, with a day pass on offer for £6.99.

The match will be televised live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage starting from 4pm. Sky Sports subscribers will be able to stream the match online via SkyGo and the SkyGo app.

Alternatively, you can follow all the build-up and action from 3pm with Standard Sport’s London Football live blog.

Harry Winks has been sidelined for the rest of month with an ankle injury, with Danny Rose (knee) a similar timescale.

In more positive news, Toby Alderweireld is nearing a return. The centre-back has been out since November with a hamstring injury and hopes to be back in first-team action for the trip to Liverpool on February 4.

Mauricio Pellegrino has no fresh injury concerns, with Maya Yoshida and Charlie Austin (both hamstring) out for the foreseeable.

Maya Yoshida is facing an uphill struggle to be fit in time for Southampton’s Premier League clash with Tottenham on Sunday.

The Japan defender will undergo a late fitness test ahead of the St Mary’s encounter, as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.

Charlie Austin remains sidelined with a long-term hamstring problem, but otherwise boss Maurico Pellegrino can select from strength.

Tottenham are sweating on the fitness of Hugo Lloris ahead of Saturday’s trip to Southampton.

Lloris is suffering from flu and will be assessed, with Michel Vorm ready to step in.

Toby Alderweireld (hamstring), Danny Rose (knee) and Harry Winks (ankle) are all still out.

Southampton ready to break transfer record with £30m Quincy Promes

Show/hide article…

Southampton are prepared to break their club record transfer fee to sign Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes.

The Premier League club’s record outlay was £18.1million for Mario Lemina last August but Spartak rate Holland international Promes at £30m and are refusing to budge in their valuation.

Southampton have money to spend after banking £75m from Virgil van Dijk’s sale and remain in talks with Monaco also for Argentine striker Guido Carrillo.

Monaco rejected a £16m offer from Southampton last week as they hold out for £18m.

Boss Mauricio Pellegrino is looking to add some firepower to his squad in January as he and Southampton currently reside in the bottom three with 23 goals in 23 games.

The club have three home games before the window closes - two in the league and Watford in the FA Cup - and the hope is that both Promes and Carrillo will finalise moves to St. Mary’s.
