Hoedt: Together we can do it

Show/hide article…

A spirited display earned a 1-1 draw against high-flying Tottenham Hotspur most recently and Hoedt is confident that Saints have the quality required to use that as a platform to build from.

He said: “We have to stick together, not only the team but the fans. It’s been difficult for them because we haven’t taken many points but they have to stick behind us and together we can do it.

“You have to be self-confident, always, if you’re in a good situation or a bad situation.

“Maybe confidence was a thing but I think if you look at the squad and the players we have we are obligated to play football because that is what we’re good at.”

Back by a vociferous St Mary’s, the Dutch international defender was also buoyed by a second-half display that differed greatly from the controversial 2-2 draw with Watford, Saints next opponents in the Emirates FA Cup this weekend.

“You see [against Spurs] when we played we were better than them. There are still 14 games left and we have to fix this.

“If you compare to the Watford game that was really difficult because they ended up with four strikers and we didn’t respond to that,”

“If you look [against Spurs] they changed shape as well; they played the second half in a diamond. But we kept playing our own game and doing the things we were good at. That’s positive for sure.”

There were some brilliant goals involving either a flick or a back heel on the weekend, and two makes this list.

At the Emirates, Mesut Ozil combined with Jack Wilshere, who then backheel for Alexandre Lacazette to rifle into the bottom corner in Arsenal’s resounding 4-1 win.

Willian was also involved in some slick interplay with Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi, leaving the Brighton defence all at sea before expertly finishing past Mat Ryan as the champions got back to winnings ways with a 4-0 win at the Amex.

Hazard’s brilliant run and finish to wrap up Chelsea’s win is also included, as is Anthony Martial’s brilliant finish, which secured all three points for Manchester United at Burnley.

Riyad Mahrez struck late in the game in Leicester’s 2-0 win against Watford, dribbling into the box where he struck a shot across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner and the list is rounded off Luka Milivojevic’s consolation volley at the Emirates.

Big Issue vendors move into employment with club

Show/hide article…

Alongside creating a bespoke world-first ‘Big Issue’ matchday programme, which was sold by vendors across the Hampshire region and at Southampton’s opening-day Premier League fixture at St Mary’s, vendors were also given the opportunity to enrol in an intensive employability programme run by Saints Foundation in conjunction with St Mary’s Training Centre.

Big Issue MD Russell Blackman said: “We’ve enjoyed working with Saints Foundation from the get go. They share our ethos of giving a hand up, not a hand out, to the most vulnerable in society, supporting those whose lives have been blighted by poverty and a lack of opportunity.

“The news that Gary, June, Julie and Aaron have impressed the team at the Foundation so much that they have secured permanent positions at the grounds is fantastic. We are not only proud and pleased for the vendors, but very grateful to Saints Foundation for their on-going commitment as part of our strategic partnership. They do invaluable work supporting adults across the community, tackling social exclusion and raising aspirations, and our values sit closely side by side.”

He added: “We are delighted with how it has all gone and are looking forward to seeing our partnership with Saints Foundation go from strength to strength to further our mission to dismantle poverty through the creation of opportunity.”

The aim of the programme was to equip the vendors, and other adults from our local community, with job-ready skills, and offer them work placements across Southampton Football Club.

Key aspects covered within the employability programme were a Level 1 accreditation in Customer Service, CV writing workshops and mock interviews.

Upon completing the course, the Big Issue vendors were given the opportunity to apply for long-term positions within the club, with several also moving on to complete a Level 1 accreditation in Understanding Stewarding at Spectator Events.

We are proud to announce that four of the programme participants – Gary Jackson, June Fullerton, Julie Cherry and Aaron New – have moved into employment within the club, with three starting roles within the stewarding department, and one gaining employment with Halo Conferences and Events.

Gary, who was unemployed for 18 months before he secured work with the Big Issue, said: “Southampton Football Club and Saints Foundation have given me the inspiration and emotional support to completely change my outlook on life. I’ve begun to believe in myself again, and I’ve been inspired to always do my best.”

Improving the lives of adults at risk and the poorest members of society is at the core of both Saints Foundation and the Big Issue’s missions, and thus we are hugely delighted with the success of this programme.

If you know someone who could benefit from the employability programme, please contact llatona@saintsfc.co.uk and to hear more news from the Saints Foundation or register in its 2018 volunteering programme follow the links below.

Manchester United’s Anthony Martial tops Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Manchester United’s Anthony Martial has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings this week.

Martial scored in his third successive Premier League game with the match-winner at Burnley on Saturday, while 'keeper David de Gea narrowly missed out on the top 10 after keeping his 14th clean sheet this term.

Sergio Aguero almost pipped Martial to top spot in the chart with a hat-trick during Manchester City’s 3-1 win against Newcastle at the Etihad.

Last week’s table-topper Harry Kane slipped to No 3, despite scoring to salvage a point during Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Southampton, while team-mate Heung-Min Son tumbled six places to No 8.

Chelsea duo Eden Hazard and Willian were among the top performers, with Hazard striking twice and assisting Willian with a sublime back-heel during a 4-0 victory at Brighton.

Watford sacked manager Marco Silva after a 2-0 defeat at Leicester, courtesy of goals from Jamie Vardy and in-form Riyad Mahrez - while Foxes stopper Kasper Schmeichel kept his third consecutive clean sheet.

West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini retained No 7 spot in the chart after a 1-1 stalemate against Bournemouth, while Crystal Palace midfielder Luka Milivojevic entered the top 10 after netting a consolation during a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Sergio Aguero leads the latest Fantasy Football team of the week

Sergio Aguero leads the latest Sky Sports Fantasy Football team of the week

We look at the latest Sky Sports Fantasy Football team of the week after Sergio Aguero rewarded his backers with a 24-point haul.

The Argentine’s hat-trick against Newcastle saw him cruise to top spot in the weekly rankings and inspire a perfect response to last week’s defeat at Liverpool.

Elsewhere in England’s top flight, Arsenal and Chelsea enjoyed dominant days while Stoke and Swansea teased defensive improvement.

Here’s a look at the weekend’s highest scoring Sky Sports Fantasy Football XI…

De Gea surged to his fourth successive Premier League clean sheet courtesy of Manchester United’s 1-0 win away to Burnley, taking his season points tally to an unrivalled position-high 163 in the process.

United’s shot-stopper was in capable company on this occasion, with Chelsea’s Willy Caballero, Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel, Stoke’s Jack Butland and Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski all matching his points haul this week. Despite notable competition, De Gea remains the undisputed long-term option for Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers.

Bauer started for the second consecutive week as Paul Lambert’s Stoke earned a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Huddersfield.

The January signing from Rubin Kazan has reaped the benefits of the short period separating the appointment of a new manager and his arrival at the club.

A fresh approach has accommodated a quick introduction for the Austrian, who earned a clean sheet and a man-of-the-match award to accumulate an impressive 11 points in Game Week 24.

Swansea produced the upset of the week by bringing Liverpool’s 18-game unbeaten run across all competitions to an end.

Mawson was the unlikely scorer in the hosts’ 1-0 win, pouncing on a loose ball after the Reds failed to clear a corner and firing past a helpless Loris Karius.

Besides gaining seven points for his goal, the centre-back proved vital in containing Jurgen Klopp’s attacking cohort to earn a clean sheet and the Sky Sports man-of-the-match award on his way to 19 points.

Alongside his goalkeeper, Jones made it four games in a row without conceding a goal in the league.

The Englishman’s stern defensive showing warranted a man-of-the-match award on top his clean sheet, giving him 12 points on the day and taking his season total to 115.

Jones will see his reputation as an accomplished match for the league’s best forwards put to the test when United travel to face Harry Kane and Tottenham at Wembley next week.

Arsenal boast a far more assured appearance with Koscielny’s calming presence patrolling things at the back.

Having missed recent outings against Chelsea and Bournemouth, the Frenchman returned to the starting line-up in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Koscienly was prominent in a devastating Arsenal performance, restoring some defensive composure as well as contributing a goal in the rout.

Elsewhere in the Arsenal team, Monreal marked his return to action with a goal and an assist against Palace after missing the last four league games.

The Spaniard’s performance served as a timely reminder of the value of his work ethic and leadership, with the only negative being his premature exit from the game through injury.

Though visibly appreciated by those affiliated with the Gunners, Monreal remains something of an unsung contributor across the rest of the league.

Willian was at hand to complete the best moment of the match, linking up splendidly with Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi before unleashing a clinical strike to put Chelsea 2-0 up inside seven minutes.

The Brazilian added an assist and a shots tier bonus to reach 13 points, marking his highest tally since his 21 points in Chelsea’s 5-0 win over Stoke in their final game of 2017.

Despite his bright form of late, Willian continues to bear the brunt of Antonio Conte’s team rotation - starting just two of Chelsea’s last five league games.

Arsenal treated supporters to an early insight that there is life without Alexis Sanchez.

While the Chilean was finalising his move to Manchester United, the Gunners were punishing a Palace performance reminiscent of their early season woes.

Having been absent in the defeat to Bournemouth, Ozil returned to command the game as Arsene Wenger’s notorious string-puller.

The German served as a menace alongside Jack Wilshere in smothering Palace with the slick intricate passing football that fans have been desperate to see all season.

Hazard turned on the style in emphatic fashion to assert his superiority in Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Brighton, inflicting a ruthless reminder of the gulf in class Chris Hughton’s men were up against.

He was a worthy Sky Sports man of the match recipient with two goals and a starring role in the reigning champions’ counter-attacking approach.

With 34 points across his last three outings, Hazard has swiftly risen to 134 points for the season - with favourable fixtures against Bournemouth, Watford and West Brom coming up in the next three weeks.

Vardy won and subsequently scored a penalty to take his league tally to 10 in Leicester’s 2-0 win over Watford.

The striker has been in fine form in front of goal this season, helping the 2015/2016 champions rise to seventh place in the table, and can be expected to maintain his form with a place at the World Cup beckoning.

Newcastle were exposed in the unfortunate position as first in line to deal with Sergio Aguero since City’s unbeaten run came to an end at Anfield.

A hat-trick, shots bonus and Sky Sports man-of-the-match award combined for 24-points and diminished doubts over a possible, but albeit unlikely, change in fortune for the league leaders.
