Dusan Tadic admits ‘wins need to start coming’ for Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton star Dusan Tadic has admitted ‘wins need to start coming’ for the Premier League strugglers as they attempt to bounce back from Abdoulaye Doucoure’s unseen handball at Watford last weekend.

Saints meet Spurs on Sunday without having tasted Premier League victory in 10 matches - their worst run since 2005. They were set for three points at Vicarage Road until Doucoure controversially palmed an equaliser in injury-time.

‘In a lot of games we have been unlucky,’ said the 29-year-old Serbian who will be vital for Southampton in the relegation run-in.

'Everything can go against you at the bottom and we just need to get those first three points after not winning games. That is all that counts and for that we need to be concentrated 100 per cent.

‘This season we have done some good things but we’ve also done bad things and we just need to stay together and push ourselves to get as many points as we can. Whether you are fighting for the title or fighting at the bottom, you are always professional and want to win every game.’

Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino is under pressure because of the poor run and the club have been linked with Monaco striker Guido Carillo as they are prepared to break their club transfer record to find a goalscorer. Charlie Austin is injured and Manolo Gabbiadini hasn’t found the net in 13 games.

Manchester City are also interested in England left back Ryan Bertrand though Saints are unlikely to sell in this window having pocketed £75million from Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.

Tadic says the remaining Southampton players had no problem with the Dutchman being sold. ‘My opinion is always that players need to be happy. You can not keep them in the squad if they are not happy,’ he said.

‘I have never been in this situation of being near the bottom before. Never. Every game now will be like a final for us and we need to prepare like that.’

Southampton vs Tottenham LIVE: Premier League updates from St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has told his Southampton players to turn their season on its head in the next month.

Pressure is mounting on manager Pellegrino after no wins in 10 Premier League encounters.

Saints face Brighton, West Brom and Liverpool in a busy run of league action, with the FA Cup clash against Watford sandwiched in the middle.

Pellegrino still expects Saints to add January recruits despite missing out on Theo Walcott, who joined Everton from Arsenal - but has called on his current crop to transform their campaign.

“We are not happy with our position but in three or four weeks’ time everything can change. It’s part of our competition,” he said.

"I feel in our team the spirit is really good and everybody is conscious about what we need.

“I receive these messages from players every day, and we have to convert these feelings into stats.”

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino on potential January transfers explained: "To be honest it will be difficult. At some point you always dream but not too much exciting [is happening].

“If it happens, it happens. If not, then it doesn’t happen. We are happy with the squad.”

Southampton 1 Tottenham Hotspur 1: Harry Kane scores 99th Premier League goal in frustrating draw

Show/hide article…

Harry Kane scored the 99th Premier League goal of his extraordinary career but it was not enough to return Tottenham Hotspur to the top four. Whether this draw is sufficient to relieve the pressure on Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino remains to be see as it leaves his side still in the relegation places.

In truth a share of the points was not good enough for either side with Spurs’ recent momentum, as they chase down a Champions League place, stalling and Southampton now on a dismal run of just one win in 11 league matches, their worst sequence in 13 years.

No-one could fault their effort, their commitment, here although they remain a team desperately in need of fresh attacking impetus – and signings are being targeted this month – and, like their opponents, spurned chances. Still there was no sign of the fans turning against them or Pellegrino.

A slick start for Southampton - and a shoddy one for Spurs - was capped on 15 minutes when Ryan Bertrand overlapped down the left to collect Dusan Tadic’s pass and crossed low into the penalty area. The ball had already ricocheted around the Spurs box and this time Davinson Sanchez attempted to take more decisive action by intercepting – only to slide in, toe-poking the ball goal-wards with it rebounding off the near post and squirting over the line to beat the stranded goalkeeper, Michel Vorm.

Pellegrino enduring his toughest moment

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino admits he is experiencing the toughest moment of his career, but insists he is not worried about his future.

The Saints manager has come under increasing pressure after a run of ten Premier League games without a victory.

Saints aim to end that streak when they take on Tottenham at St Mary’s tomorrow, but are up against it facing an in-form team that hammered them 5-2 just a few weeks ago.

Pellegrino said: “Yes for sure (this is toughest part of my career), I expect always that my challenging moment, or my most important moment, hopefully will come.

“For this reason I am not worried about my job.

“I am worried about a lot of things, but not my job.

“You have to work and be ready to compete against everyone.”

He added: “I am not worried about my job, in the future.

“Obviously I am happier when the fans are proud of the team.

“But in football, in sport, if you don’t want to be in difficult situations, don’t play the game, stay at home and don’t play the game.

“I want to play the game, even given the consequences.

“If you play the game in difficult situations, and move forward, you will be stronger.

“We are building something not just for the next two games, it’s for the future.

“I feel I am growing, and I am learning too.”

Pellegrino has noted the difference between first and second half Saints showings of late, and is trying to rectify the issues.

“I think we have to learn from this moment,” he admitted.

“Obviously we have to control better this type of moment, especially when the opponent plays long and direct and tries to put you under pressure.

“It’s normal when you don’t have the level of your confidence really high, maybe you want to save the result and you don’t take the responsibility or you forget what we are doing in the recent games to keep playing the same way.

“The values are really important, even more so in a difficult situation.

“Against Palace, against Fulham, it was more or less the same. We play really well in the first half and in the second half because we were worried to keep the results we didn’t do it.

“It’s part of the transition and we need to win to move to another level.”

Maya Yoshida is touch and go to recover from a hamstring strain to face Spurs, but Pellegrino is trying his best to prepare his players for what lies ahead.

“To give them tools and work on how we can approach this moment,” he explained of his role.

“Sometimes the opponent is better than you, but you have to be ready for this moment and how we can solve this situation.

“For example without Charlie we don’t have this big player and you can’t put a long ball and create problems. We have to put the ball on the ground and try to create more difficult action.

“It’s part of our quality and I trust if we improve this ten per cent in every single game little by little the belief will come back.”

READER LETTER: Saints fans have been sold out - blame the chairman, not the players

Show/hide article…

The Southampton FC chairman has sold us down the river.

They have sold all our best players, telling us we now have the team we need to go ahead, when we the supporters have known for the last two seasons that we need new blood in the team.

Walcott has gone to Everton – is it because we only pay Championship wages and now are a Championship side?

I don’t think they are going to sign anybody of substance; we have been misled by the board of Southampton FC.

I only hope the players we have left can lift themselves up and keep us in the Premier League – it’s not them letting us down it’s the management.
