Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp was close to £50m deal before transfer scandal

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp was close to getting his man in July but in the end the deal fell through.

Liverpool are still chasing Van Dijk who is training on his own at Southampton and has handed in a transfer request.

The Daily Mail say the Reds now face having to shell out a massive £70m to sign the 26-year-old.

Liverpool are desperate to bolster their backline ahead of a return to the Champions League.

And Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino is insisting his star man will stay at St Mary’s.

Butterfield expecting physical West Ham test

Show/hide article…

Assistant Coach Danny Butterfield is more than aware of what awaits his side at Little Heath, though he is confident of a good result if Saints can replicate parts of last weekend’s performance.

“I think certainly the first half performance against Leicester was very, very positive,” started Butterfield.

“Again there will be one or two changes to the team, but if the lads can replicate those standards for a long period of time then I think we will be in for a good day.

“From what we’ve seen of West Ham it will be a tough game, as we know they are a big powerful side and will want to put right their opening result away at Brighton.”

With the league campaign back under way, the Saints youngsters now also have the Under-18 Premier League Cup to look forward to.

Drawn on Monday, they will face Reading, Manchester City and Norwich City in the group stages - and Butterfield feels the competition will be a great addition to the fixture calendar.

“I think it is good for the lads to be in a competition where winning is key rather than development,” he continued.

“I think it is good that they have the opportunity to get in the mind-set of either you win or you get knocked out.

“The pressure is then on for them to find a solution to win the game rather than developing as individuals. It is certainly a competition we are looking forward to and hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.”

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic not envious of Southampton’s Chinese takeover

Show/hide article…

Southampton host the Hammers having just sold to Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao. West Ham are run by co-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold, who rescued the club in 2010 after the previous Icelandic owners plunged into financial crisis. Sullivan and Gold are also Hammers fans, which piles the pressure on Bilic. But Bilic says he wouldn’t have it any other way. “It is definitely not a disadvantage,” he said.

“It is better for a club to be run by someone who knows the history, the environment and the business part of it” “It is better for a club to be run by someone who knows the history, the environment and the business part of it. “Those clubs and chairmen should be praised because it is not easy to resist those kind of offers from the East which are very good offers for the owners. “They should be appreciated by the fans of course and from the whole of football family. “They know they are not only following West Ham but ‘living’ West Ham. Those fans, they know how well the chairmen are doing for the club - how much they have invested - and they have taken it a long way up already.” Bilic warned that Gao’s arrival on the south coast is no guarantee of better times ahead.

He said: “So far we haven’t found every takeover to be like Manchester City or Paris St-Germain. “Some things you can’t buy. You can’t buy mentality, you can’t buy tradition. You can’t buy the time. “I don’t care about the others but West Ham is on the right way and I think everyone connected with West Ham knows the chairmen are doing their best, within the budget.” Robert Snodgrass has been offered to Sunderland just seven months after joining for £10m from Hull.

Liverpool ‘almost’ landed £50m star in July

Show/hide article…

Liverpool were ‘close to getting’ Virgil van Dijk in a £50m deal in July before the deal fell through after Southampton accused the Reds of tapping up the Dutch star.

Saints were furious about Liverpool’s communication with the centre-back and forced them to back off and make a grovelling apology.

But Jurgen Klopp almost had his man, report the Star , with a deal all but done in July before the scandal broke out.

Now the Reds must look for an alternative with Saints refusing to do business with them.

Liverpool have installed a new pitch and scoreboard as fans prepare to see a new-look Anfield when the Reds play Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Merseyside club have been working hard throughout the summer to ensure the new changes were ready in time for the opening home game.

The Reds will have a brand new scoreboard for fans to keep an eye on while a brand new pitch has been put down and pictures show the turf to be in pristine condition ahead of the Palace game.

The Reds are the first in the country to use a new ‘Permavoid’ system which speeds up drainage at wetter times of the year.

A new irrigation and drainage system was part of the work, which saw diggers and machinery move in to rip out the old pitch back in June.

Jurgen Klopp recognises Trent Alexander-Arnold as a stand-out star of his generation… but warns against burning out the teenage sensation.

Liverpool manager Klopp admits he is reluctant to even speak about his 18-year-old new boy - who announced himself to Reds fans and a wider football audience with a stunning Champions League goal against Hoffenheim in Germany - for fear of ramping up the hype.

Yet even for a manager who has developed so many promising young players, such as Mario Gotze, Marco Reus, Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski, into genuine world-class talents, Klopp is excited about where the all-round skills of the local-born player can lead.

Saints ready to end goal drought

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has had his Saints squad perfecting their shooting in training as they attempt to break their long St Mary’s goal drought.

The opening day goalless draw against Swansea made it a club record six home Premier League matches on the bounce without scoring for Saints – a total of 545 barren minutes.

New manager Pellegrino admitted he was pleased with a lot of what he saw from his team against Swansea, but was frustrated by that lack of cutting edge which cost them two points in a match they dominated.

He has been working hard with his squad at Staplewood over the last few days to try and rectify the issues, with shooting drills top of his priority list.

“We were working in that way obviously,” he said.

“In my point of view we have been playing 80 or 85 per cent of the game in a good way but in this final third is something that is the most difficult thing to achieve in modern football with ten players behind the ball with small space, not too much time to think about the actions.

“I will repeat that I think we are on the right track and we have to keep going.”

He added: “I will use as a reference our last game, the Swansea game.

“I will take as a reference because we were analysing what they were doing in the past.

“But as a first game the other day, the performance as a reference for us, I’ll repeat that we played in general a really good game, but we couldn’t win.

“But we have to keep going, keep pushing, and we are in the right track.”

Pellegrino has virtually a fully fit squad to pick from for this afternoon’s game.

The only player he is definitely without is Virgil van Dijk, who is still not being considered for first team duties after submitting a transfer request.

Saints are currently battling to prove that they can hang onto their star names, and Pellegrino expects that to happen.

“When I met in the first meeting with Les (Reed) and Ross (Wilson) they told me that they want to keep the best players on the pitch,” he revealed.

“At this moment Southampton want to progress on the pitch and the idea of the club was to keep the best players in the club.

“Ralph (Krueger) was clear, Les was clear, and hopefully I have got the same idea to progress as a team we have to keep our best players.

“If we have the fortune to bring another good player we will be more strong.”
