Saints fans raise vital funds for Big Issue

Show/hide article…

Southampton Football Club and The Big Issue are delighted to announce that the generosity of the club’s fans has helped to raise significant funds for The Big Issue and the people it supports.

Saints teamed up with the organisation to produce a special edition of the magazine that went on sale across Hampshire and also doubled as the club’s matchday programme for the Premier League opener against Swansea City.

A total of 4,661 copies were sold, generating sales of £11,652.50 – with half of the cover price going directly to the vendors and the other half to support the work of The Big Issue.

The unique partnership extends even further, with Big Issue vendors, in collaboration with The Big Issue Foundation, being provided with the opportunity to enroll in an eight-week employability programme, run by Saints Foundation, to equip them with job-ready skills and offer work placements across the club. Upon completion of the course, vendors can then apply for long-term appointments with Saints.

A total of 14 vendors helped to sell the special programme last weekend, while first-team players Nathan Redmond, Manolo Gabbiadini, Oriol Romeu and Florin Gardos also joined some of them earlier in the week to try their hand at selling the magazine in Winchester.

Greg Baker, Head of Saints Foundation, said: “The matchday activation of our partnership with The Big Issue at our first home fixture of the season against Swansea City was an incredible experience and really demonstrated how our shared values are at the heart of our partnership.

“It was great to see our fans really embrace the partnership and the vendors and we look forward to welcoming them back to the club and into the employability programme that we will be running in the near future.”

Paul McNamee, Editor of The Big Issue, said: “It has been a joy to work with both Southampton FC and Saints Foundation throughout the process and wonderful for the vendors to have been involved throughout. The results really show the shared values we have as two organisations, working with the most vulnerable in society, giving them a hand up, not a hand out.

“It’s great to see a football club working towards a positive outcome in this way. We are delighted with how it has gone and are looking forward to working with Southampton FC and the Saints Foundation in the future.”

Speaking about selling The Big Issue at the Swansea match, vendor Andy Degruchy said: “It was brilliant. The atmosphere was great and it’s can only be a good thing that The Big Issue has come together in this way with Southampton FC.”

Big Issue vendor Dumitru Barbu added: “I enjoyed it. It has been both pleasant and interesting. The atmosphere was really positive and I’m so glad that I was given the opportunity to take part.”

Premier League managers: Henry says Ferguson is ‘Mr Premier League’ – here’s what the current 20 bosses could be called

Show/hide article…

Manchester United may have been Arsenal’s bitter rivals when Thierry Henry was playing for the Gunners, but he knows when respect is due.

“When I met him for the first time, I called him Mr Premier League,” Henry said this week of United’s legendary former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.

Henry even went as far as suggesting the Premier League trophy – which Fergie led United to on 13 occasions – should be named in the Scottish manager’s honour.

But what if every current Premier League manager was given a ‘Mr’ nickname?

Just for fun, we’ve had a go at assigning the 20 current Premier League managers an alternative moniker.

Check them out in the gallery above.

Pellegrino hopes for another great atmosphere

Show/hide article…

Southampton host West Ham United, as they look to build on their opening-day draw with Swansea City, and a full house is again expected for the match.

Pellegrino has been buoyed by the backing of the club’s supporters since he arrived, including in last Saturday’s season opener, and he believes they can play a big part again tomorrow.

“Hopefully we can keep going and keep playing in the same way,” he said. "I think we are on the right track and the people were the other day behind the team and pushing us.

“We know that it will be a really difficult game, but together – the players and the fans – we have to be as a unit to try to win the game.”

West Ham have been busy this summer in the transfer market, signing players such as Joe Hart, Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautović, and Pellegrino is expecting a stern test from them.

“We never know what will happen,” he said, when asked what sort of an approach he anticipated from the Hammers.

“Football is an unpredictable game, but they signed important players, with experience in the Premier League, with the capacity to create problems. In parallel, I think we are ready to keep going and do a good performance.”

How can Southampton find their shooting boots?

Show/hide article…

Adrian Clarke is looking at tactical battles of three Premier League fixtures in Matchweek 2.

Southampton have not scored at St. Mary’s Stadium in four-and-a-half months, which equates to just over nine hours of playing time.

Will they end this run at home to West Ham United this Saturday? Provided they can keep their heads at key moments, they should.

Their goalless Matchweek 1 draw with Swansea City provided various reasons for encouragement.

Asserting themselves over their opponents, Mauricio Pellegrino’s men spent 34.7% of the match inside the final third; this was only bettered, and fractionally so, by Manchester City at Brighton & Hove Albion (34.8%).

Playing at a higher tempo and moving the ball quickly and into wide areas with more purpose, Southampton carved out some excellent chances.

Down the left Ryan Bertrand (four) and Nathan Redmond (five) manufactured nine goalscoring opportunities.

The quality from wide areas was especially good, with 56% of Southampton’s 16 crosses finding a team-mate.

Dusan Tadic, who regularly drifted wide in his free role, produced four accurate crosses from open play.

There were signs of creative improvement.

In April and May Southampton failed to top 16 shots on goal in any of their five home fixtures. But against the Swans they mustered 29, including 16 from inside the box.

Those were the highest numbers recorded in both categories for any team in Matchweek 1.

Finishing remains the issue: only two of those 29 efforts hit the target.

Southampton’s players could probably count themselves a little unlucky over the course of this barren period.

Sergio Romero and Eldin Jakupovic saved penalties that would have won them matches on home turf, and they also stumbled across a series of inspired man-of-the-match displays by opposition goalkeepers.

But as the run has continued doubts have crept into their heads, and we saw classic symptoms of Southampton players tightening up last Saturday.

The hosts either rushed their efforts on goal (missing the target 16 times) or took an extra touch to steady themselves at key moments (allowing defenders to close them down and make 11 blocks).

These are the two key areas they must address against West Ham.

One and two-touch finishes are required.

If the Hammers cannot defend better than they in their 4-0 loss at Old Trafford, Southampton are sure to create a stack of chances. To take them, they must banish negative thoughts.

That’s not easy when you have had 94 efforts since you last scored a home goal, but they have no choice but to stay calm.

Once the run has been broken, I’d expect Southampton to score many more home goals than the 17 they managed in 2016/17. They have the collective style and skill to plunder far more.

Southampton vs West Ham: Premier League prediction and preview

Show/hide article…

Slaven Bilic must pick his West Ham squad up from a thrashing at the hands of Manchester United as they look to kickstart their Premier League season at Southampton.

Romelu Lukaku starred on his United as Mourinho’s men beat West Ham 4-0 on the opening day of their 2017-18 campaign.

The heavy defeat consigned the Hammers to the bottom of the table, with summer signings Javier Hernandez, Marko Arnautovic, Pablo Zabaleta and Joe Hart unable to stem the tide at Old Trafford.

But with two more away fixtures before they play at the London Stadium again following the World Athletics Championships, the Hammers must improve on the road as they face Manuel Pellegrino’s Saints at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Southampton host West Ham at St Mary’s on Saturday, August 19, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30 BST.

The game will not be televised live in the UK. Alternatively, you can follow live goal updates with Standard Sport’s blog from 2pm.

Michail Antonio returns to the West Ham squad for the trip to St Mary’s.

The winger underwent a hamstring operation over the summer and was not ready for the defeat at Manchester United, but he will feature on Saturday.

Midfielders Cheikhou Kouyate and Manuel Lanzini (both knee) and striker Andy Carroll (thigh) remain sidelined, although all three are back in training.

Ryan Bertrand will be fit after shaking off a knock in time to hand the Saints a clean bill of health.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has returned to full fitness to take a seat on the bench, while wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk remains unavailable for selection.
