Saints star banned from driving

Show/hide article…

SAINTS player Dusan Tadic has been banned from driving for six months and fined more than £600 for a motoring offence.

The 28-year-old midfielder was prosecuted for failing to tell police the name of a driver who was alleged to have broken the law.

An allegation of speeding was withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service when the case was heard at Aldershot Magistrates’ Court.

But Tadic was convicted of failing to identify the driver of a Porsche that was involved in an incident in the Winchester area earlier this year.

Court papers say the defendant failed to respond to two letters sent to his home by Hampshire police on April 20 and May 11.

The player did not attend the hearing and the case against him was proved in his absence.

As well as being banned from the roads Tadic, of Ocean Way, Southampton, was fined £660 with £85 costs and told to pay a victim services surcharge of £66.

It comes five months after one of his team-mates was prosecuted for speeding.

Record signing Sofiane Boufal was fined more than £800 for an offence committed in Southampton city centre just before last Christmas.

The 23-year-old midfielder, was driving at 36mph in a 30mph zone when he was clocked by a fixed speed camera on December 18.

Boufal was driving his Range Rover on the A33 St Mary’s Place/Kingsway, near Hoglands Park, when he exceeded the speed limit.

The player, who pleaded guilty, was fined £600 with £85 costs and a victim services surcharge of £66 in a case that was also heard at Aldershot Magistrates’ Court.

As well as playing for Saints Tadic represents the Serbian national team.

He has more than 40 caps for Serbia, having made his international debut in 2008 as a 19-year-old, as well as Saints.

Tadic joined the club in 2014 from Dutch club FC Twente, for an undisclosed sum, thought to be more than £10 million.

He was the first player to be signed by the then new manager, Ronald Koeman and made his debut for Saints during the side’s first game of the 2014-15 Premier League season.

He was on the pitch for 74 minutes before being substituted for Shane Long, who was also making his first appearance for the club.

His profile on Saints’s website says: “Tadi? was a breath of fresh air on arrival in the Premier League.

“His second season with the club was even better, as he picked up 13 assists in all competitions as Saints finished sixth in the League.

“A fine campaign was rewarded with a new four-year contract ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

Premier League: Pep Guardiola named manager of the month for second time in a row

Show/hide article…

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has been named Premier League manager of the month for the second time in a row.

The Spaniard added October’s award to the one he claimed in September after his league-leading side scored 13 goals in three wins from their three matches.

City winger Leroy Sane, 21, was named player of the month after scoring and assisting in each of those games.

Southampton’s Sofiane Boufal won the goal of the month award for his sublime individual strike against West Brom.

The 24-year-old Morocco winger picked the ball up deep in his own half and evaded several challenges before curling into the bottom corner with five minutes remaining, securing a 1-0 home victory.

City, who lead the Premier League table by eight points from Manchester United in second and Tottenham in third, next play away to Leicester on Saturday (15:00 GMT).

Their three league fixtures in October were; a 7-2 home victory over Stoke, a 3-0 home win against Burnley and 3-2 victory at West Brom.

Liverpool vs Southampton preview: Team news, current injuries and suspensions

Show/hide article…

It’s the Premier League meeting fifth-placed Liverpool and their south coast-based feeder club Southampton.

It isn’t. Not it the UK, at least. However, if you want to follow all the action as it happens then bookmark this page and come back on Saturday afternoon for our minute-by-minute commentary.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has virtually a fully-fit squad to select from for the visit of Southampton.

Adam Lallana is fit again after a three-month lay off with a thigh injury while fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson has recovered from a similar problem which forced him to miss their last Premier League match and England’s two friendlies.

Forward Sadio Mane has trained after reporting a slight hamstring problem on his return from international duty and Klopp will make a late decision on his availability.

Liverpool (possible, 4-3-3): Mignolet; Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Moreno; Can, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Sturridge, Firmino.

Out: Clyne (back), Bogdan (knee).

Tests: Henderson, Lallana (both thigh), Mane (hamstring), Coutinho (groin).

“The only thing that’ll kill me is losing games!” Klopp laughs off health scare

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp’s doctors have told him the only thing that will kill him is results!

The Liverpool boss was on fine form as he laughed off a major midweek health scare, by revealing the message he passed on to his team in a meeting before today’s clash with Southampton.

The German coach was advised by club doctors to undergo medical tests, after feeling unwell following a return flight from South Africa. But Klopp had a message for Reds fans as he returned to work.

“I am really completely fine. I told the players the doctor said the only thing that can kill me is if we lose football games,” he said with a smile. “That’s it. It was nothing. It is not that someone should think I have to go back in to hospital tomorrow.” Klopp missed training on Wednesday, as he admitted himself to an NHS hospital in Liverpool on club doctors’ orders, where his presence created a furore… with the manager joking that it is not the place for a high-profile figure.

“I really have to thank a lot of people, not because it was anything that serious, but because they were that nice,” he said.

“Whatever people say about it, the NHS is not as bad as you think. The only problem is that you should not try to experience it as a public person. The whole world is talking about it.

“It was not a marketing thing by Liverpool! I came into the hospital and, when I passed the first few people, I saw a security man go into his walkie talkie, ‘Klopp’s in hospital! Did you see him?’”

He was back to oversee training on Thursday, and he insisted he is in perfect health, despite the scare. Klopp said: “I went there and they said, ‘OK, all good’.

“For this they need a little bit of time, they have a lot of machines. But I knew from the first second I had nothing – unfortunately I was the only one. Afterwards everybody knew it.”

The manager faces a very different problem for the weekend – how to get fit-again Philippe Coutinho and former Saint Adam Lallana into his side. Klopp added: “Adam is a fantastic player but we want to have him for the season.

“This is the moment the player wants to be back immediately, and I have to be the bad guy and say, ‘Not today, maybe tomorrow’.”

Another ex-Southampton star Dejan Lovren could face his old side as fellow centre-back Joel Matip is a major doubt.

Southampton coach Mauricio Pellegrino: Premier League big-guns will up our game

Show/hide article…

Saints’ trip to Anfield today kicks of a daunting run of away games against five of the top six between now and the turn of the year.

But Southampton boss Pellegrino said: “Liverpool and Southampton are similar in the way they play and are teams that are comfortable with the ball.

“They will try to press higher and we will try to be aggressive. Maybe against teams that are more offensive we can find more space.

“It will be really difficult because at Anfield people are pushing all the time and they will be trying to press higher. It will be an opportunity to show we can play this type of game. Maybe against this team we will be a surprise.

“I think we have to be focused in what we have to do as a team because when we think about the big names you lose focus on what you have to do.

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Southampton star backed to make January move

Show/hide article…

That’s the view of pundit Steve Nicol.

The Dutch defender, 25, handed in a transfer request in the summer in hope of securing his dream move to Anfield.

However, Liverpool were accused of tapping up the former Celtic star and the Reds withdrew their interest.

Reports this week claimed Liverpool will return for Van Dijk in January and make a £70m bid.

Jurgen Klopp has been given the green light to sign the centre-half to sure up Liverpool’s dodgy defence.

And pundit Nicol is backing the Southampton defender to link up with Klopp when the transfer window opens in January.

“I think there’s every chance that this will happen,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
