Liverpool news: Mohamed Salah could break Robbie Fowler’s Premier League record in Southampton game

Show/hide article…

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool forked out £34 million to bring Mohamed Salah to the club.

The ‘Egyptian Messi’ as he is nicknamed, had an unsuccessful spell in the Premier League for Chelsea, so many thought it was another piece of bad business by Liverpool.

However, Salah has repaid the faith shown in him by his club and he now has the opportunity to write himself into Liverpool’s record books.

If Salah scores against Southampton he will have scored eight goals in his first twelve Premier League matches, going level with club legend Robbie Fowler, who set the record in December 1993.

Salah currently holds the record with team-mate Daniel Sturridge with seven goals in his first eleven Premier League games, but could be the outright record holder after twelve games if he scores two or more goals against the Saints.

The Reds go into the game at Anfield having won their last three games in all competitions and you can listen to full commentary of the match on talkSPORT 2.

Liverpool have only lost two or their last 32 home league matches so will fancy their chances against Southampton whether Salah gets on the scoresheet or not.

Butterfield on U18s trip to Reading

Show/hide article…

Saints travel to Reading tomorrow, as the U18s Premier League campaign approaches its halfway point and Butterfield has tasked his young cohort with replicating the level of performance that triumphed against league leaders Chelsea in October.

“The break has given the boys a chance to settle down and analyse the season up until now,” the ex-Saints defender began.

"The focus is definitely on a response post-Norwich, it was a disappointing display, when you contrast it with the standards that the boys have set of late.

"We hope that they’re chomping at the bit to try and rectify that Norwich result, but also get back to what they’re capable of showing.

“We’ve watched Reading, they’re a competent side. A big powerful team with individuals capable of winning games single handedly.”

17-year-old Will Smallbone was one of a few standout performers in Saints’ midweek Senior Cup victory at Staplewood, netting a brace and registering a couple of assists to cap a fine display.

Asked about the pleasing progress of his second-year scholars, Butterfield commented: "Will [Smallbone] got a couple of goals and most of the attacking play came through him, we know he is capable of that. With players his age, it is about finding consistency. It is nice he’s being recognised.

"All of our players aspire to be given an opportunity in the older or senior age groups, it should act as a benchmark. Credit to the players who have stepped up and stood out.

“Our job as coaches is to progress the lads as individuals and then pass them on to the next stage of their development.”

Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson set to feature against Southampton, confirms Jurgen Klopp

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Adam Lallana will feature for Liverpool against Southampton this weekend following a lengthy injury lay-off.

Lallana has not played this term, after picking up a thigh injury against Atletico Madrid in pre-season, but returned to action on Tuesday in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Melwood training ground.

Having been handed the green light, the midfielder will play a role in Liverpool’s clash with Saints on Saturday but Klopp insists he won’t be rushed back.

“Adam [Lallana] has trained three days and it is fantastic he is back but there is no rush,” he said in his Friday press conference.

“He is a fantastic player but we want to have him for the season. This is the moment when the player wants to be back immediately and I have to be the bad guy and say: ‘Not today, maybe tomorrow.’

“Obviously that is not too nice but I do it for him and for the club. We will see how things are. It depends how the other players are. We will use him for sure but bringing him for 90 minutes is not a good idea and will not happen.”

Klopp also confirmed that Jordan Henderson “should be ok” to face Southampton after the midfielder sustained a thigh strain ahead of the international break.

The 27-year-old missed the Reds’ 4-1 win over West Ham, as well as England’s friendlies against Germany and Brazil, but looks to be in contention for Saturday’s league clash.

As for Sadio Mane, the Senegalese is expected to undergo further tests today after aggravating a hamstring problem during the international break.

Mane returned to full training at Melwood earlier this week but it’s unclear if he’ll be given the go ahead to start against Southampton.

Sadio Mane a doubt to face Southampton, Klopp OK after illness

Show/hide article…

LIVERPOOL – Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will have to wait to see whether Sadio Mane will be fit for Saturday’s match with his former club Southampton.

Mane was sent home early from international duty with Senegal this week after he “slightly felt his old [hamstring] injury,” according to the Senegalese Football Federation.

The 25-year-old had missed five matches with a hamstring issue before he made a surprise return in the 4-1 win at West Ham prior to the international break.

Speaking at his prematch news conference on Friday, Klopp said: “Sadio, we have to wait. We will see today [if he can face Southampton].”

Adam Lallana returned to full training earlier this week, but Klopp stressed that the England international will not be rushed back to action following an extended period on the sidelines.

Lallana has not played at all this season after injuring his thigh during a preseason friendly with Atletico Madrid in August.

“Adam is in training now since three days or four days [ago],” Klopp said. "It was a really long [time], it is fantastic that he is back. He lost nothing, no skills or anything. He trained really well but in the next few weeks we have games every three days and we will need him for that.

“There is no rush in it even when everyone who knows Adam can imagine how ready he is to be part of the squad again, so we will see what we do in this case.”

Klopp himself had a health scare earlier this week when he was self-admitted to hospital with illness that forced him to miss training on Wednesday.

“I feel really good,” he said. "I am 50 now so maybe I need to get used to it, but that’s twice already in a British hospital now. Whatever people say about the NHS [National Health Service], it’s not as bad as you think!

“I have to thank a lot of people. Not because it was serious, only because they were so nice. I’m not ill. I’m not sure if you’re happy about it, but I think it’s kind of good news!”

Ahead of the Southampton game, Klopp refused to be drawn into Liverpool’s ill-fated pursuit of Virgil van Dijk in the summer, which forced the Merseyside club to publicly apologise to the Saints amid tapping-up allegations.

When asked about Van Dijk, Klopp said: “You expect an answer? There’s nothing to say about that.”

Elsewhere, the Liverpool manager reacted to news that defender Nathaniel Clyne is expected to be out until around February after he underwent an operation to correct a lingering back injury that has kept him out of action this season.

“Clyney, things like this happen,” Klopp said. "All the specialists agreed we should try it the conservative way without the surgery, and now everybody agreed we now had to use it.

“We are all sure Clyney will be fine, but when he will be back it will have been a long time for him. That’s not to change anymore and he is already in the last period of the recovery from the issue. Now we made the surgery, it is clear that he will be back round about and that’s good. Of course, for him it’s difficult.”

Liverpool v Southampton preview: Adam Lallana fit again after layoff

Show/hide article…

Liverpool will be looking to protect their unbeaten home record this season against Southampton on Saturday.

Only Manchester City (16), Manchester United and Arsenal (both 15) have taken more points at home this season than Liverpool, who beat Huddersfield 3-0 in their last game at Anfield in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pellegrino has endured an underwhelming start to life at Southampton, recording three wins, four draws and four defeats, scoring just nine goals in that period.

Despite the negative numbers, Saints have had the fifth most shots and created the fifth most chances this season, but have had the most shots off target.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has a virtually fully-fit squad to select from for the visit of Southampton.

Adam Lallana is fit again after a three-month layoff with a thigh injury while fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson has recovered from a similar problem which forced him to miss their last Premier League match and England’s two friendlies.

Forward Sadio Mane has trained after reporting a slight hamstring problem on his return from international duty and Klopp will make a late decision on his availability.

Mario Lemina is set to be Southampton’s only absentee.

The former Juventus midfielder remains sidelined with an ankle injury which has kept him out of the last two matches.

Northern Ireland’s Steven Davis, Republic of Ireland’s Shane Long and Italy’s Manolo Gabbiadini are all available despite failing to qualify for next summer’s World Cup.

Southampton will just sit back and defend. Southampton beat them over two legs last year [in the League Cup semi-finals] and done well in the second leg at Anfield when [Shane] Long scored.

But I am going to go for Liverpool, Southampton will sit back - if Liverpool score early, it could be more, but I think they find it very difficult to break teams down.

Sky Bet price Liverpool at 2/5 this weekend for a home win over Southampton, who are 13/2 to cause an upset, while the draw comes at 19/5. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino lead the first goal-scorer market, both priced at 7/2, with Manolo Gabbiadini is 17/2 to break the deadlock for the visitors.

Liverpool vs Southampton is included in this weekend’s Super 6 round, with £250,000 up for grabs again. Enter your predictions for free here.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ready to ‘strike back’ against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp is ready for Liverpool to ‘strike back’ against Southampton as he insists he is fully over his health scare.

Liverpool will kick off a sequence of 13 matches before the new year against a side who shut them out on four occasions last season.

The last time being when Klopp’s side were chasing a top four spot.

The game in May finished in acrimony as James Milner had a penalty saved by Fraser Forster after the Southampton keeper rutted the spot with his studs before the former England international could take his kick.

This meeting was always going to have needle attached, following Liverpool’s summer pursuit of Virgil van Dijk.

Klopp would not speak about the Holland defender but it seems there is a little more riding on it for the German manager, who had check-up in hospital on Wednesday.

He said: 'There is a special relationship between Southampton and Liverpool. We’ve given them a lot of money for a few players.

'It was always a fair deal but it looks like they suffered in different moments but Liverpool always paid really good for the players.

He added: 'I still remember the situation with the penalty. It looked like it was really strange and not completely fair.

'I still remember this situation. I don’t care how long we didn’t score, I know it will be difficult again to win against Southampton.

‘But it’s still possible. There’s nothing that should hold us back.’

'In this moment we have pretty much a full squad. I have a few choices. We will be well prepared. I don’t forget last season.

‘It was a very decisive situation for us, they didn’t need the points. But it felt like someone kind of created stories so they were really spot on around the penalty and Foster was on fire. I think it’s a good moment to strike back.’

This will be the first game this season when Klopp has Adam Lallana available for selection.

The England international has fully recovered from a ruptured thigh but Klopp has made it clear he will not start against his old club.

Sadio Mane, however, is available after returning early from Senegal with a hamstring issue.

'It is completely different to Sadio. He was much longer out, it was in the pre-season in Munich against Atletico Madrid – I don’t even know when it was – but he is a fantastic player but we want to have him for the season.

'This is the moment the player wants to be back immediately and I have to be the bad guy and say ‘Not today, maybe tomorrow’.

'Obviously that is not too nice but I do it for him and for the club. We will see, it depends how the other players are.

He continued: 'We will use him for sure but bringing him for 90 minutes is not a good idea and will not happen.

'What he is doing is so different to the other players: he is the ‘jumper’. He loves to do that and of course it is very important for us and will be again and I am already looking forward to when we can use it again.

'But he is also a fantastic football player and he showed that in the first (training) session.

‘Unfortunately I was not involved but when I came in they were all really excited about it: ‘Ok, Adam was pretty good’ so I know about it and it is good for the player.’

Klopp warns Van Dijk over Anfield visit

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expects Saints’ Virgil van Dijk to endure a difficult time at Anfield on Saturday.

However, he will also hope it is the Netherlands international’s last uncomfortable experience at the ground as the Dutch centre-back remains his primary transfer target.

Liverpool were forced into an embarrassing public climbdown in the summer after being threatened with being reported to the Premier League for ‘tapping up’ the player, but there has been considerable bridge-building done between the two clubs since.

They will have received some encouragement when Mauricio Pellegrino said on Thursday he could not guarantee Van Dijk would still be at the club after the January transfer window.

But when Klopp was asked about the centre-back he said: "You really expect an answer? What happened in the summer? There is nothing to say on that, absolutely.

“Hopefully it should be difficult for every player to come to Liverpool - you mean on Saturday right? Hopefully it is a difficult time.”

Saints have previously sold Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne and Rickie Lambert to Liverpool in recent years and with the recent goodwill charm offensive at boardroom level there remains a chance Van Dijk will become the sixth.

“There is a special relationship between Southampton and Liverpool,” added Klopp, who declared himself fully fit after a midweek trip to hospital after reporting feeling unwell.

“We’ve given them a lot of money for a few players. It was always a fair deal - it looks like they suffered in different moments - but Liverpool always paid really well for the players.”

One of those players, Lallana, is edging close to a comeback but it may not be against his former club after being sidelined for three months with a thigh injury.

The England international has yet to make a competitive appearance this season and Klopp is in no hurry to rush back a key player in his midfield, even if the player himself is chomping at the bit to be involved.

“There is no rush even when everyone who knows Adam can imagine how ready he is to be part of the squad again,” said the Reds boss.

"He is a fantastic player but we want to have him for the season. The next few weeks we have games every three days and we will need him for that.

"This is the moment the player wants to be back immediately and I have to be the bad guy and say ‘Not today, maybe tomorrow’.

"Obviously that is not too nice but I do it for him and for the club.

“We will use him for sure but bringing him for 90 minutes is not a good idea and will not happen.”

Last season Lallana topped Liverpool’s running statistics and is the key man in initiating Klopp’s high-tempo pressing game, so his return can only be a significant boost for the side.

“What he is doing is so different to the other players: he is the ‘jumper’,” said Klopp.

"He loves to do that and of course it is very important for us and will be again and I am already looking forward to when we can use it again.

"But he is also a fantastic football player and he showed that in the first (training) session.

“Unfortunately I was not involved (as he was at hospital) but when I came in they were all really excited about it: ‘Ok, Adam was pretty good’ so I know about it and it is good for the player.”

Liverpool face somewhat of a bogey team in the form of Southampton on their return to Premier League action.

After scoring six against the Saints two years ago, Liverpool failed to beat the south coast club in the next five games with just two goals to their name during that run.

Southampton, though, are the definition of inconsistency this season holding a record of three wins, four draws and four defeats in their opening 11 games with just nine goals scored.

The Reds can win a third game in a row in the league for the first time in 12 months with three points on Saturday.

Liverpool host Southampton at Anfield with kick-off scheduled for 2pm on Saturday, November 18.

The match will be not be televised live on TV in the UK. You can follow all the team news and goal updates from 2pm with Standard Sport’s live blog.

Harry Kane leads the line in Sky’s Festive Football advert

Show/hide article…

Tottenham Hotspur and England’s Harry Kane stars in Sky Sports’ 2017 Festive Football campaign.

This season’s promotion is themed around the fact that, during the festive period, football unites people across the country.

While players train harder than ever in preparation for these season-defining fixtures, fans young and old travel the length and breadth of the country to attend games, while pubs fill up and families gather around the TV to watch their teams live.

It’s a celebration of the coming together of the football community, and a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that, despite it being Christmas, the beautiful game is still their top priority.

It opens with Spurs star Kane’s alarm going off at 5am, and shows the commitment of players, fans and everyone involved in football over the festive period.

Take a look at a sneak preview of the advert above, which you can see in full for the first time during coverage of the north London derby live on Sky Sports Premier League on Saturday from 11.30am.
