FORGOTTEN man Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could be given a chance to prove himself in Saints’ crunch game against Everton at St Mary’s.
With Oriol Romeu serving a one-game suspension after his fifth yellow card of the season in the 3-0 defeat at Liverpool and Mario Lemina’s injury status unclear at this point, Mauricio Pellegrino may turn to the Dane.
Hojbjerg has played just six minutes of football this term, having come on as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw at Brighton in October.
Pellegrino previously reassured the midfielder that his time will come and that he believes he can be an important player for Saints.
And with Saints bereft of form and potentially personnel in the middle of the park, Hojbjerg could be just the man to help galvanise the team.
Influential midfielder Lemina, who had become established next to Romeu at the base of midfield, has been suffering from an ankle injury and has missed the last three games.
The Gabon international, who joined for a club-record fee from Juventus in the summer, has been a big miss and without Romeu, Pellegrino will be sweating on his status.
Even if Lemina is available the temptation to give Hojbjerg a go would still be there, given Romeu’s absence and Steven Davis’ attributes further up the pitch.
Saints continue to struggle for goals, having scored nine in 12 matches, but Davis, who has netted twice this term, is able to contribute well further forward.
But since Lemina’s absence, the Northern Ireland international has joined Romeu further back in midfield, leaving him unable to have that impact in attack.
However, Hojbjerg may well offer a solution to this and, considering his lack of game time, should be well motivated when the opportunity to play presents itself.
The 22-year-old started well at Saints last season, following his £12.8m move from Bayern Munich in July 2016.
He made 35 appearances in all competitions, but his performances faded and he was eventually dropped from the Denmark national team. He hasn’t played for the national team for more than a year now.
There has been growing concern in his homeland over his progress, having gone from one of the country’s best young players to stalling at Saints.
He’s been viewed as ‘one for the future’ at Saints and considering his age, there is plenty of time for him to breakthrough.
However, with Lemina and Romeu as well as Davis ahead of him in the pecking order, his game-time has been very restricted.
Mostly, Hojbjerg has played for the under-23s and in friendlies during the international breaks. He scored in a 5-1 friendly win over Championship side Fulham earlier this month at Staplewood.
But he might now be drafted in as Saints face Everton in a must-win game at St Mary’s.
Saints currently sit four points off the bottom three and are in a bad slump in form, having won once in their seven matches.

Southampton must fight to halt slide, says Soares
Show/hide article…
(Reuters) - Southampton must use the raw emotion of recent disappointments as a spur to improve and end their current slump in form, the Premier League club’s defender Cedric Soares said ahead of Sunday’s match against fellow strugglers Everton.
Southampton are four points above the relegation zone in 14th position after suffering a three-game winless streak, failing to score in losses to Liverpool and Burnley, and finding the net once in a draw with promoted Brighton and Hove Albion.
A defeat to 16th-placed Everton could drag the Saints into the thick of a relegation battle and Soares has urged his team mates to use recent results as extra motivation to stay clear of the drop zone.
“We need to be upset. If you are not upset then something is wrong. We need to think about our mistakes and what we need to improve,” Soares is quoted as saying by the Daily Echo.
”It’s normal to be upset and upset doesn’t mean you go out there and let your head go down. It means we go out there and you want to show even more and you want to climb out of the hole and come back to winning ways.
“We need to definitely go out there and fight with all our weapons. It’s a question of attitude, we need to demand the best from our players and not 60 or 70 percent because in the Premier League it’s not enough.”
The 26-year-old believes Southampton gave up too easily during their 3-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend and says the club must react more positively in future games.
“We had one or two mistakes, we conceded the goals and after that it’s tough to comeback. Our reaction was not the best,” Soares added.
“Maybe we need to consider our reaction and work on that. We need to make sure we never give up because there’s always a chance to come back. We need to improve that.”

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah tops Power Rankings
Show/hide article…
Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings this week.
The Egypt international scored twice for the second game running during a 3-0 win over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.
Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne slipped one place to No 3, despite scoring a stunner in a 2-0 win at Leicester, while previous table-topper Fernandinho (No 3, down one place) and Leroy Sane (No 7, down two places) retained top-10 places.
West Brom boss Tony Pulis was sacked after a 4-0 drubbing by Chelsea, with goals from Eden Hazard (No 2, up seven places), Alvaro Morata (No 6, up 27 places) and Marcos Alonso (No 13, up 66 places).
Burnley 'keeper Nick Pope recorded his fifth clean sheet from nine league games since replacing the injured Tom Heaton during a 2-0 win over Swansea - albeit from a quiet afternoon having been forced into making just one save.
Callum Wilson was the standout performer after netting a hat-trick in Bournemouth’s 4-0 win over Huddersfield, collecting a league-high 6,058 points from matchday 12 alone.
Last season’s Power Rankings winner Alexis Sanchez fired 20 places up the chart after scoring Arsenal’s second during a 2-0 win over north London rivals Tottenham.
Watford midfielder Will Hughes (No 59, up 413 places) made considerable headway up the chart, as did Manchester United’s Paul Pogba (No 64, up 262 places), who returned to action after being sidelined for two months with a hamstring injury.
The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.
Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.
The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Everton star facing two-game ban ahead of Saints trip
Show/hide article…
EVERTON striker Oumar Niasse has been charged with simulation by the Football Association ahead of the Toffees’ trip to Saints on Sunday after he won a controversial penalty in the Premier League draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Niasse went down inside the Palace box with referee Anthony Taylor deeming the Senegal international had been fouled by Eagles defender Scott Dann.
Dann himself reacted angrily over the decision which saw Leighton Baines tuck away the resulting penalty to cancel out Wifried Zaha’s early opener for the hosts.
Dann said after the game that Niasse, who drew Everton level for a second time with an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, had “conned the referee” and now the FA has announced that the player has been charged.
“Everton’s Oumar Niasse has been charged for ‘Successful Deception of a Match Official’ following the game against Crystal Palace on 18 November 2017,” a statement on their website read.
Niasse could become the first Premier League player to be hit with a retrospective ban for diving following the introduction of the new law at the start of the season.
But the 27-year-old will only be handed a two-match suspension if the panel which convenes to oversee his case unanimously agree that Niasse was guilty of the offence.
“It is alleged he committed an act of simulation which led to a penalty being awarded in the 5th minute of the game,” the FA statement continued.
"He has until 6pm on 21 November 2017 to respond.
"Incidents which suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation are referred to a panel consisting of one ex-match official, one ex-manager and one ex-player.
"Each panel member will be asked to review all available video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it was an offence of ‘successful deception of a match official’.
“Only in circumstances where the panel are unanimous would the FA issue a charge.”
Niasse defended himself following the incident and told the Liverpool Echo he would be “shocked” to be charged - although he does now have a case to answer.
The forward was out of favour at the start of the campaign but, with the Toffees struggling for results, he has now scored five goals in seven appearances this season.
