Yeovil v Notts County preview

Show/hide article…

Yeovil will welcome back strikers Olufela Olomola and Francois Zoko when Notts County visit Huish Park.

Olomola and Zoko sat out the 2-1 defeat to Swindon on Saturday through suspension but are eligible to return against the Magpies. However, defender Bevis Mugabi will be missing again as he serves the second part of a three-game ban. Defender Ryan Dickson, who has been missing for nearly a month with concussion, will be assessed but could feature.

Leaders Notts County will have Elliott Hewitt available again for the long trip to Somerset. The versatile player, who has been operating in midfield, served a one-game suspension at the weekend after collecting his fifth booking of the campaign.

Hewitt will have a battle to win his place back, though, after his replacement Rob Milsom helped County beat Cheltenham on Saturday. Goalkeeper Adam Collin remains sidelined with a knee injury so Ross Fitzsimons will continue in goal.

The Glovers are unbeaten in their last six home league games against Notts County (W4 D2), conceding just two goals in those games and keeping four clean sheets.

Indeed, the Magpies have only beaten Yeovil once in their last eight league meetings (D3 L4) and haven’t scored in any of their last three (D1 L2).

Yeovil lost their last home league game against Swindon on Saturday, but haven’t lost consecutive home league games since a run of three in September 2016.

Notts County’s Jorge Grant has netted five goals in his last five competitive games for the club; this after going six games without a goal for the Magpies.

Virgil van Dijk would suit Liverpool, says Dirk Kuyt

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk would do a great job at Liverpool, insists ex-forward Dirk Kuyt.

Van Dijk was the subject of a controversial transfer wrangle in June when Liverpool were forced to issue a public apology for an improper approach for the Netherlands international defender.

Recent newspaper reports claim the Reds are considering a new move for the 26-year-old in January.

Kuyt told Sky Sports News: "I know Virgil. I didn’t play with him in the national team but he’s a great player. We’ll see how things will go in the winter break or at the end of the season.

"I don’t think it’s strange for me to say he is a player who will suit Liverpool very well. He has the right mentality and he is a great defender.

“He could do a great job at Liverpool but it’s not for me to say if he would be an improvement or not. That’s up to the club.”

Liverpool have had issues at centre-back this season but youngster Joe Gomez has impressed. Retired Netherlands international Kuyt does not believe Van Dijk’s potential arrival would be detrimental to the 20-year-old.

“I think the Liverpool team now has great players but if you want to be contenders for titles then you have to have more than 11 good players,” he said.

Kuyt was speaking at the launch of Liverpool FC Foundation’s second official legends game, which will see the team take on Bayern Munich Legends at Anfield on March 24, 2018.

U23s Report: Saints 3-4 Fulham

Show/hide article…

Saints found themselves 2-0 and 3-1 down, but Nathan Tella pulled one back and was involved in both of the other goals – two poacher’s efforts from Marcus Barnes.

However, Fulham had the final say to earn three points in Premier League 2, as the impressive Jordan Graham set up Mikolaj Kwietniewski for the winner with 13 minutes left.

Radhi Jaïdi could call upon an experienced core, with Alex McCarthy behind a back four of Jérémy Pied, Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens and Matt Targett.

James Ward-Prowse captained the side, while Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Sam McQueen were also in from the start.

But Saints would have to recover from a difficult opening, as Graham pounced to score on the rebound after McCarthy made a brilliant instinctive save with his foot from a Fulham corner.

Saints were enjoying the majority of the play, but would find themselves with a steeper uphill climb, as Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson hung up a cross to the far post for towering centre-forward Elijah Adebayo to nod in from close range.

Things would go from bad to worse when Jaïdi lost Targett to injury in the 20th minute, though the left-back did leave the pitch on his feet suggesting it may have just been a precaution.

Saints’ luck was about to change, as they halved the deficit and took charge of the game.

After Jake Hesketh was denied by Norman, the midfielder found the right weight of pass to find Tella in the box, who slotted home.

Suddenly it was wave after wave of Saints attack, and Barnes might have equalised when he latched on to McQueen’s ball over the top and got there before the stranded Norman, only to steer the chance wide.

Fulham had been penned in, but when they escaped into the Saints half they made it count, as Graham’s square pass was dispatched by Adebayo, albeit in fortuitous fashion as his miss-hit shot deceived McCarthy and looped into the corner of the net.

Back came Southampton in an incredibly open game, and within eight minutes the hosts were level courtesy of Barnes’ brace.

The lively Tella was involved in both; first crossing from the right to substitute Jonathan Afolabi, whose cutback was tapped in by Barnes, before the striker latched on to Tella’s threaded pass to prod his second past Norman.

Unsurprisingly, there was a more controlled feel about the second half after a manic first 45.

Fulham threatened to retake the lead through Steven Sessegnon – twin brother of highly-rated first teamer Ryan – who shot into the sidenetting, before Thorsteinsson overran the ball with only McCarthy to beat.

Saints’ best moment came courtesy of a sharp turn from Barnes, who made space to shoot from 25 yards and stung the gloves of Norman.

Fulham’s most dangerous player had been the talented Graham, who thought he’d scored the goal of the game 18 minutes from time.

Receiving the ball wide on the left, he stepped inside and curled a stunning strike into the top corner that dipped just underneath the crossbar.

But Graham’s luck was out, as the offside flag intervened. He received the ball well onside, but must have strayed before the crossfield ball to him was played.

The on-loan Wolves man would not be denied, as his enticing cross was tucked in by Kwietniewski 13 minutes from time.

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Former Reds ace Dirk Kuyt gives verdict on possible transfer

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk would prove a strong addition to Liverpool according to Dirk Kuyt

The Dutchman was the subject of a controversial transfer wrangle in June when Liverpool were forced to issue a public apology for an improper approach for the Southampton player.

Recent reports claim boss Jurgen Klopp is considering making another bid for the 26-year-old in January.

"I know Virgil,” Kuyt told Sky Sports News. “I didn’t play with him in the national team but he’s a great player.

“We’ll see how things will go in the winter break or at the end of the season.

"I don’t think it’s strange for me to say he is a player who will suit Liverpool very well. He has the right mentality and he is a great defender.

“He could do a great job at Liverpool but it’s not for me to say if he would be an improvement or not. That’s up to the club.”

But according the Mirror, Manchester City are also poised to swoop for the £60m-rated Dutch international.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino fighting to save job after just five months in charge

Show/hide article…

Supporters have flooded social media to call for the Saints board to fire Pellegrino after a worrying run of three wins from his first 12 Premier League games. Some fans are even threatening to boycott Sunday’s home game with Everton in protest over Pellegrino and the way vice-chairman of football Les Reed is running the club. Pellegrino replaced Claude Puel in June but the Argentine’s cause has not been helped by defender Cedric Soares admitting his players “gave up” during Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Liverpool. Cedric said: “We did not start badly, but after the first and second goal we gave up a little bit and our reaction was not the best. “It is tough to say, we need to keep working and it is in tough moments when all the good players need to show themselves.

“We did not start badly, but after the first and second goal we gave up a little bit and our reaction was not the best” “We need to be upset. If you are not upset then something is wrong. We need to think about our mistakes and what we need to improve. “Being upset does not mean you go out there and let your head go down. It means we go out there and want to show even more. “You want to climb out of the hole and come back to winning ways.” While there is no immediate desire to part company with Pellegrino, Saints’ new Chinese owner Gao Jisheng will be keeping a close eye on results between now and the end of the year, anxious to protect his £200m investment. Saints, who have also been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Wolves’ reserves, face a daunting run of away games at the two Manchester clubs, Tottenham and Chelsea and a home fixtures against Arsenal before December 30.

Leicester chief Puel was given the bullet despite leading the south coast side to an eighth place Premier League finish and the League Cup final. Cedric added: “Every team has difficult moments during a season and it is in these moments you need to come together and fight for it. “You cannot blame one or two people, you need to blame all the team and we need to assume our responsibility and go out there and fight as one as a team. “That what we are going to try and do immediately in the next game. You cannot start to doubt everything just because you had a bad result. “Either you can put your head down and just go on the pitch and play or you get together and you fight. We need definitely to go out there and fight with all our weapons. “It is a question of attitude, we need to demand the best from our players and not 60 or 70 per cent because in the Premier League it is not enough.”
