Mauricio Pellegrino wants his team to prove they have the fight to turn around their poor form following the 3-0 loss at Liverpool.
The Saints boss admitted his side struggled to react as he would want after they fell 2-0 behind in the first half at Anfield, as they were comfortably beaten with barely a whimper.
It is clearly not want Saints require as they begin to look over their shoulder.
“Against this team when you are losing 2-0 away it is difficult to come back,” he said.
“Obviously we have to react in a different way because in football everything can happen.
“We try everything and the preparation was really good before the game and we have to say Liverpool was better than us today.”
The defeat was a bad way to start a run of games in which Saints play all of the top six before the turn of the year, and piled extra pressure on the next match at home to Everton.
When asked if he was content with the attitude of his players at Anfield he replied: “At the beginning yes, but I think the second goal we were really disappointed after conceding the second one and we felt that we never could do something more to try to be in the game.”
Pellegrino was asked whether that was worrying and continued: “For sure because in the second half we try at the beginning, we have the Sofiane chance and maybe Ryan but again in the third goal we were finished with our expectation.”
A virtuoso performance from Mohamed Salah ran Southampton ragged as his two goals inspired Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Anfield and fired the Egyptian to the top of the Premier League scoring charts.
His summer arrival for £38m, at the time a club record, was questioned by critics after his disappointing spell at Chelsea but on this form he is looking an absolute bargain.
Both his first-half goals had a touch of class and his constant threat had visitors backpedalling for 80 minutes before his departure to a standing ovation - by which time Philippe Coutinho had added the third goal.
Having edged one ahead of Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero, both strikers, Salah is racking up some impressive numbers.
The 25-year-old’s double took him to nine goals in his first 12 Premier League matches, breaking the club’s previous best held by Robbie Fowler - the man affectionately hailed as God by the Kop for his goalscoring exploits.
Salah’s overall statistics are equally impressive with 14 goals, all from open play, in 18 matches and three assists. Last season Coutinho was the club’s leading scorer with 14.
And this from a winger whose finishing has, at times this season, still been criticised.

Saints kept the Reds at arm’s length for 31 minutes at Anfield, but Mo Salah’s first of two goals before the interval swung the balance in favour of Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Redmond admits Saints have to improve and improve quickly ahead of next Sunday’s visit of Everton to St Mary’s.
“That wasn’t good enough from us,” said the winger.
“In the first part of the first half I thought we did alright, but we’ve got to be putting up more of a fight.
“I think we made a couple of mistakes that cost us in the first half. In the second half we tried to come out and play a bit more.
“We need to do more than in previous weeks. We’ve lost two on the bounce now and something has to change, which has to start from us on the training ground.
“Every game’s big. In the first ten games of the season we could’ve done better – those were big games and so are the ones coming up.
“Every single game for us is big because we want to get as many points as possible.”
