Liverpool 3-0 Southampton - are you in our fan pics?

Show/hide article…

Saints have won just once in seven games after losing 3-0 at Anfield against a clinical Liverpool.

Saints failed to muster a shot on target, but the same can’t be said of Liverpool, who created many openings and remain unbeaten on home turf.

Mo Salah did the damage in the first-half, netting twice in a ten minute period for his 13th and 14th goals of the campaign.

The Egyptian curled in from the edge of the box on 31 minutes, before flicking home from Phil Coutinho’s wonderful through ball with the outside of his foot.

Saints showed little endeavour in the second half and tried to change their fortunes by introducing Charlie Austin.

That failed to have the desired impact and Jurgen Klopp’s side extended their lead to 3-0 as Coutinho hit home after Fraser Forster parried Roberto Firmino’s powerful effort from inside the box.

Saints sit 14th in the Premier League after this one.

Butterfield: A professional performance

Show/hide article…

Michael Obafemi added to his mounting goal tally with a brace, while Will Ferry notched his first goal of the season to cap a faultless Saints performance.

Ex-Southampton defender Butterfield was particularly pleased with the Under-18s application and resolve, after a first half stalemate.

“It was a close contest for an hour,” Danny began. "It was a proper battle especially in the first half where there wasn’t much between the two teams.

"We made it competitive and the boys were professional throughout, they were clinical second half when we got chances. All in all a good performance with a big improvement after Norwich.

"We spoke at half-time about the team staying in the game, remaining focussed, making professional decisions and we didn’t allow them to play through us. Scored three good goals.

“Over the last five or six games we’ve kept our fair share of clean sheets and that’s down to the team as a whole, being hard to play against. Forcing teams to play around us.”

Southampton will listen to offers for Gabbiadini, Austin and Long

Show/hide article…

Southampton are willing to listen to offers for strikers Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long in the January transfer window with new Saints owner Jisheng Gao concerned his players are not delivering value for money.

Gao, a controversial Chinese businessman who bought the club in August, is ready to swing the axe besides selling Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool in order to raise further revenue.

He believes Southampton should be doing better this season given their £200million squad is the most expensively-assembled in the Premier League outside the ‘Big Seven’.

The shot-shy strikers are particularly in his firing line. Italy’s £15million forward Gabbiadini has scored in only one game since August after enjoying a decent start to his career in England last season. Long, signed for £12million from Hull, hasn’t netted since February and £4million Austin only has one goal this season.

Saints executive director Les Reed has built up a good reputation for wheeling and dealing in the transfer market, selling Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin, Luke Shaw and Sadio Mane for big money in recent seasons.

But he faces a big challenge trying to recoup the money paid out for the three front-men who have failed to deliver for manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hails Reds as winning ways return

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool’s improvement after they eased to a 3-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah was the star of the show with two more goals and now tops the Premier League’s scoring charts while Philippe Coutinho added the third.

Anfield was a jittery place after a run of one win in six Premier League games but, three straight victories later, the mood has noticeably shifted.

Liverpool look a lot more solid at the back while the front quartet of Salah, Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino proved far too good for Southampton.

The result saw Liverpool close to within one point of fourth-placed Tottenham, and Klopp was a very satisfied man.

He said: 'Southampton are a really good football team. We had these moments not too often so far this season. You need these goals and thank God in a moment we score them. That makes all the difference.

'I’m really happy about the defending, the whole team and especially the last line was really strong. It was just an all-round good performance and a really deserved win, and for us of course very important.

'It pushed the top of the table a little bit together. We are still in, that’s good. (Manchester) City is obviously flying around pretty alone. We cannot change that but we can make pressure on all the others and that’s what we did today.

'We have to build on our experiences that we made so far in the season. We played all kinds of teams, all kinds of styles. There was only one game that was really bad, and that was Tottenham.

‘We used these experiences. We have a much better protection, I hope we can keep that, it’s a big part of not getting nervous in a game. It looked much more mature and that’s very important for us.’

Salah has scored 15 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions following a £34million move from Roma in the summer, including eight in his last six games.

His first goal was a sublime curling finish while his second saw him time his run perfectly through the Southampton defence to get on the end of Coutinho’s delightful pass.

‘He’s in a good moment,’ said Klopp. 'It’s good for us. The first one, that’s not a real chance, fantastic goal; second goal, fantastic play, outstanding for the pass.

‘I’m pretty sure Phil played a few more of these passes already in his life but when somebody gets it in the box and is not offside, that’s quite rare.’

While it was all smiles for Liverpool, Southampton offered little as a attacking threat and have now won just once in seven games.

Boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: 'I think we started well, the first half an hour. But we made a couple of mistakes that against this type of team you cannot.

‘After the second goal, it was really difficult for us to come back into the game. We know that we are in a difficult moment and now we have to react because in the Premier League every single team is really difficult.’
