Quartet receive international calls

Show/hide article…

Mia Cruickshank, Ella Morris and Alisha Ware have all been selected for the England Women’s Under-15s team, ahead of their double header in Belgium.

The trio will fly with the squad to Brussels for a training camp that runs from April 11th to April 15th, with two games against Belgium lined up for the visit.

Elsewhere, Harriet Lambe has been selected for the Republic of Ireland’s Women’s Under-16s squad, who will meet for a training day at the National Sports Campus, in Dublin, on Saturday 25th March.

Additionally, there is a standby call-up for Sophia Pharaoh with the England Women’s Under-17s squad, ahead of theirUnder-17 Championship Elite Round fixtures.

England face Poland on Saturday 25th March, before taking on Germany on Monday 27th March and Italy on Thursday 30th March.

The recognition is another feather in the cap for the Regional Training Club, which has helped a number of girls progress to the international stage this season.

The women’s and girls’ game forms an important part of Southampton’s future, with this being further highlighted by our Same Game campaign, which launched last year, informing and educating people about the work being done at the club.

If you are interested in playing for the Regional Talent Club, the registration process for trials ahead of the 2017/18 season is now open.

The Regional Talent Club is a quality-assured programme that provides player-development opportunities for elite female players at Under-10s, Under-12s, Under-14s and Under-16s, while forming an integral part of the England Women’s Elite Talent Pathway, having been awarded a Tier 1 Licence by The FA.

Southampton’s England quartet make history

Show/hide article…

The current England senior squad lists four players from Southampton for only the second time in the club’s history.

James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond have joined Three Lions regulars Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand in the squad this week, as Saints are a club with one of the highest number of representatives the national team this time around.

The previous occurrence came in 2014 when Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez were involved for a friendly game against Denmark at Wembley.

Their calls came little over ten years since the previous Southampton representative in an England squad when James Beattie was involved.

Until 2014 the most players Saints had called up by England at one time stood at three players when Peter Shilton, Mark Wright and Danny Wallace were in the team that earned a 4-0 friendly win against Egypt in 1986.

The 1980s were a particularly profitable time for England call-ups from Southampton, with Steve Williams and David Armstrong among some of the other names to receive international recognition at that time.

The trio of Lambert, Lallana and Rodriguez matched the feat of 1986 during November 2013, before Shaw’s additional inclusion some four months later saw Saints have four in the squad for the first time.

The four players involved this time around will be joined by some familiar faces, with some former Southampton players also included in Gareth Southgate’s squad. Luke Shaw, Nathaniel Clyne, Michail Antonio, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were also called up.

That means as many as four Southampton Academy graduates could take to the field at once for England at some point in the two matches against Germany and Lithuania in the week ahead.

Indeed, England’s criteria for picking players looks like a further endorsement of the Southampton Way.

Why visiting teams should always opt to change ends before kick-off

Show/hide article…

Winning the toss is a Sunday League football concern. Something as simple as the sun’s position, the wind’s direction or the pitch’s slope can play a significant role in the outcome of the match. Not so in the Premier League, right?

Wrong. The effects of the elements aren’t much of a consideration in professional football, but an away team choosing to ‘swap ends’ for the first half brings with it a sense of curious unease to a home crowd, all used to seeing their team play in the “right” direction.

Routine is disrupted, and a traditional psychological advantage for the home side is lost - attacking the end which houses their most vocal fans in the second half .

Every team has their preferred direction to play in for the second period of a match. Manchester United will attack the Stretford End, Liverpool shoot towards the Kop, Crystal Palace play towards their Homesdale Road Stand ‘Fanatics’. This is where each club’s most dramatic, most memorable goals tend to have been scored, and fans will be used to seeing them attack that way as games wear on.

But what difference does it really make? Does attacking towards your own fans in the second half actually make a difference?

Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini may return from injury within a month

Show/hide article…

Southampton are confident they will have Italian goal ace Manolo Gabbiadini back from injury inside a month.

Gabbiadini pulled a groin muscle at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, bringing to an abrupt end his prolific start of six goals in his first four games for Saints.

The 25-year-old, signed for £14.6million from Napoli in January, was forced to withdraw from the Italy squad for games against Albania and Holland.

Gabbiadini, who on Tuesday collected his PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month for February, which he won by public vote, was replaced in the Azzurri squad by Atalanta’s Andrea Petagna.

He is expected to be out for around three weeks which will mean he can target a return in Southampton’s clash with Manchester City in mid-April if his recovery goes smoothly.

Claude Puel’s side were beaten 2-1 at Spurs and are 10th in the Premier League with 11 to play.

Puel said of Gabbiadini after the game: ‘It’s a groin injury and we will see with all the scans. I hope it is not bad but for his national team, it is not possible for him to go.’
