When did your club last have a 20-goal man?

Show/hide article…

Everton’s 31-year wait for a player to score 20 league goals in a season ended on Saturday when Romelu Lukaku became their first man to achieve the feat since Gary Lineker in 1985-86.

After scoring the landmark goal in injury-time against struggling Hull, the Belgian striker got in on the act again moments later, netting the last goal of the game as Everton emphatically won 4-0.

Here, Sportsmail looks at how many years the other Premier League clubs have had to wait for a player to hit 20 league goals…

BUT VILLA HAVE GONE LONGEST WITHOUT ONE!

36 - Aston Villa supporters have not seen a player score 20 league goals for 36 years - the longest wait of all the 92 League clubs.

Peter Withe was their last player to achieve the feat, scoring 20 goals in the 1980-81 season.

However, with Jonathan Kodjia on 15 goals in the Championship this season, Villa’s long wait could soon be over.

SO GOOD THEY’VE DONE IT TWICE

9 - There are nine players who hold the distinction of being the last man to score 20 league goals at two League clubs.

These players include: Andre Gray (Burnley and Luton), Glenn Murray (Crystal Palace and Brighton), Grant Holt (Norwich and Shrewsbury), Jamie Cureton (Exeter and Colchester), Jamie Vardy (Leicester and Fleetwood), Jordan Rhodes (Blackburn and Huddersfield), Robin van Persie (Manchester United and Arsenal), Paddy Madden (Scunthorpe and Yeovil) and Will Grigg (Wigan and MK Dons).

Boufal’s chance to find form

Show/hide article…

SAINTS’ £16m record signing Sofiane Boufal has the chance to find form with national team Morocco this week after a frustrating period at St Mary’s.

The tricky attacking midfielder, who arrived from Lille last summer, has struggled with injuries this term and of late has found playing chances limited.

With Claude Puel finding a settled team in the 4-2-3-1, Boufal has been behind Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse in the pecking order for a starting role.

But, ahead of a busy month, the 23-year-old, who has made 20 appearances in all competitions this term, can get some much-needed minutes under his belt while out on duty with Morocco.

Saints are heading into six Premier League games in April, having just come off the back of a quiet March, which included just two games.

And with such a flurry of games on the horizon, Puel will be looking to utilise his whole squad.

That is good news for Boufal and he’ll be aiming to start a demanding period positively with his country.

Morocco face Burkina Faso and Tunisia in Marrakesh in a double header of friendlies.

Harve Renard’s side face Burkina Faso on Thursday, before the Tunisia match on Monday.

In total 13 Saints men are out on national team duty over this international break, with an impressive six of those joining up with England squads.

As has been reported, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond have joined Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster in the Three Lions senior team for the first time.

Gareth Southgate’s men face Germany in a friendly in Dortmund tomorrow night before welcoming Lithuania to Wembley in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

There are two St Mary’s players in the England Under-21s squad, with Sam McQueen joining Jack Stephens for his first call-up, as Aidy Boothroyd’s side prepare for the Under-21 European Championships in Poland this June.

The Young Lions face Germany in Wiesbaden on Friday and then take on Denmark in at the BioNutria Park in Randers on Monday in back-to-back friendly games.

Meanwhile Cedric Soares links back up with his fellow Euro 2016-winning team-mates as Portugal take on Hungary in a World Cup qualifier.

Fernando Santos’ side host their third-placed opponents in a potentially pivotal encounter before welcoming Sweden in a friendly a week today.

Shane Long will be hoping to keep the Republic of Ireland ahead of Dusan Tadic’s Serbia in World Cup qualifying Group D this international break.

They host Wales in a qualifier in Dublin this Friday as they look to retain top place in the group. Martin O’Neill’s side then play Iceland at home in a friendly a week today.

Tadic and Serbia are just behind the Irish in second and they will look to keep the heat on at the top against Georgia in Tblisi in their own qualifier.

Meanwhile, Saints captain Steven Davis will lead Northern Ireland out for their World Cup qualifier against Norway at Windsor Park on Sunday.

And Maya Yoshida has been picked for Japan for their World Cup qualifying matches against UAE and Thailand.

The Samurai Blue hope to take a step towards the finals in Russia when they visit UAE on Thursday, before hosting Thailand a week today.

And, last but not least, Cuco Martina is heading out to the Caribbean for a friendly against El Salvador with his nation Curacao.

The island nation play the friendly as they prepare for the Caribbean Cup finals in the summer.

Ward-Prowse ready to make the most of England “dream”

Show/hide article…

SAINTS star James Ward-Prowse is ready to make his “dream” England chance a roaring success this week.

The Staplewood academy graduate has been named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the matches against Germany and Lithuania alongside St Mary’s team-mate Nathan Redmond.

The 22-year-old says he is determined to make his mark as he eyes a debut against the Germans in Dortmund tomorrow night.

“It’s obviously an incredibly proud feeling for me,” he said. “It’s always been a life-long ambition and a career ambition to reach the senior squad.

“I think it’s every young player’s dream to play for England and to be given that opportunity and chance to represent your country and do everyone proud is a great honour.

“Should the chance come this week, I’ll be ready to take it.”

Ward-Prowse, who has represented England at various youth levels - including captaining Southgate’s Under-21s side, is looking forward to learning from the other players during his time with the senior side.

He added: “It’s a different environment in terms of the players that you’re with, but I think it’s a positive thing.

“I think for me, as a young player, it is different but I’m going to use it to benefit me as a player and increase my knowledge of the game.

“I can’t wait to draw every ounce of knowledge from other players who have been in the group before this week, to help me as a player as well.”

Redmond, who has represented England’s Under-21s 34 times, has also been called up by Southgate and Ward-Prowse is pleased to see there is a pathway from the youth sides to the first team.

“Having worked with Gareth before, he’s made it clear to us in the 21s that there is that pathway there,” Ward-Prowse added.

“It’s a positive thing. Not only for myself and Nathan but if you look throughout the squad as well, the likes of Raheem (Sterling), John Stones and Ross Barkley, they’re players who have come through as well.

“It’s positive that if you are doing well at a young age then you’ll be given a chance.”

Alan Smith names controversial Germany v England combined XI

Show/hide article…

ALAN SMITH has selected a combined team of England and Germany players.

The former England and Arsenal striker, and current Sky Sports pundit, has picked six English players and only five Germans - despite the fact Germany are the world champions!

A few key players for both countries - such as Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer - are out injured, so Smith did not select them for his combined team.

Some Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea and Southampton players make it into his side.
