Hughes: We’ll have to be at our best

Show/hide article…

The Latics have already knocked out Premier League opposition in AFC Bournemouth, West Ham and Manchester City to reach this stage.

And with a place in the last four of the competition up for grabs, Hughes says they are well aware of the quality their opponents possess.

“They’re a difficult side to go up against. They’ve got some good players within their group and good energy,” he said.

“They have a way of playing that would test anybody as its been proven. They’re good in their own league but have the ability to test teams at a higher level.

“We have to go with there with the intention of making sure they struggle with what they’re good at and what we’re good at, we execute.”

Saints’ FA Cup mentality about to change

Show/hide article…

RYAN Bertrand admits Saints will start taking the FA Cup a lot more seriously if they beat Wigan in the quarter-final tomorrow.

So far, Bertrand confesses, Saints have been using the knockout competition as a vehicle to raise team morale and confidence during their fight for Premier League survival.

“Yes, 100 per cent, all the way through. Even when we’ve been going to these games it’s about getting a good win to build a good atmosphere leading into the Premier League games,” he said.

“If we get through the Wigan game we’ll then start to take it a lot more seriously and thinking, right, one game to the final and on our day we can beat anyone.

“Until that time comes we’re fully focused on what we have to do.”

He continued: “That’s how we’ve been looking at it. We’ve been treating it as a game, say if we’ve drawn the week before, it’s nice to get a win and get that feel good factor back of a win.

“A win changes training grounds, changes teams and that’s how we’ve been approaching it and now we find ourselves one game away from Wembley.

“Who knows what will happen, you can’t get too carried away. We know the focus is the league but when we go and play the FA Cup we’ll go and try and win.”

Saints have beaten Fulham, Watford and West Bromwich Albion to reach the last eight, while League One Wigan have impressively defeated top-flight sides West Ham, Bournemouth and runaway leaders Manchester City at the DW Stadium on the way to this stage.

Bertrand is aware that Paul Cook’s team will pose a difficult challenge, but admits he’s not been paying too much attention to their giant-killing exploits.

“It’s the FA Cup, but I’ve not been paying too much attention if I’m honest,” he said.

“I’m busy focused on this (the Premier League), but they’ve deserved their place and beaten some really good teams to be there, so I’m sure they’ll give us a good test.”

Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked this week after a disastrous run of just one league win 17 outings, led Saints to this round of the competition.

But it is the Argentine’s replacement, Mark Hughes, in his first game at the helm, who is tasked with leading the club to the last four and to Premier League survival.

Saints were agonisingly close to ending their 42-year wait for major silverware in last season’s League Cup final, which they lost 3-2 to Manchester United last February.

Manolo Gabbiadini had a goal wrongly scratched off for offside in that game, in which Saints were the better side.

Now, Saints – despite their troubled campaign – have found themselves a game away from a Wembley semi-final and a chance of atoning for the pain of last term’s final defeat.

But, Bertrand has urged Saints not to deviate from the real task at hand.

“I think in the club’s DNA and the club’s progression from when they were in League One and rose back to the Premier League, I think it’s definitely on the club’s mind to win a trophy but not at the forefront right now,” Bertrand said.

“At this moment in time, it’s simply survival and establishing ourselves in the Premier League, rather than silverware.”

Sims: ‘it’s time for fight and desire’

Show/hide article…

FEARLESS Josh Sims admits he’s playing without inhibitions in a troubled period for Saints, and has urged his team-mates to use the FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan to power into the rest of the campaign.

Saints are currently struggling in the Premier League, one point off the relegation zone, and face League One Latics in Mark Hughes’ first game in charge, having replaced Mauricio Pellegrino with the experienced Welshman this week.

The 20-year-old wideman knows the FA Cup can be a big springboard for the rest of the campaign and is relishing making a further impact.

“It’s a massive game in such a big competition. It takes the edge of the Premier League when we’re in this competition," he said.

“We’ve got far, played well, so we need to take confidence into this game. We need to take that confidence and how far we’ve got in the cup into the Premier League.

“It’s nice we’re still in this competition because it takes your mind off of it.

“For example the game against Wigan it’s a different competition and we’ve played well in it so far, so we can take that confidence back into the Premier League.”

Sims has had an increasing impact of late as Saints bid to avoid the drop.

The academy graduate came on in the 68th minute against Burnley last month and turned Saints’ performance around with an energetic and positive display, helping set up Manolo Gabbiadini for an equaliser in the final minute.

He subsequently made his first start of the season in the goalless draw against Stoke, putting a decent display, before Pellegrino put him on the bench in his final game in charge – the miserable 3-0 defeat to Newcastle.

“As a young player I’ve not experienced the same things as others have,” he said.

“For me, it’s difficult because I’ve not been in this situation before so I can look at it both ways.

“I can be fearless in that way, I don’t know any different. I’ve only been in the first team a short amount of time, so I can take that as a positive and not worry about as much from a personal perspective, not to worry about the situation we’re in.

"I just need to keep playing and take that kind of fearless mindset into the games.”

Sims is desperate to make a further impact and with Hughes now at the helm has urged Saints to show ‘fight and desire’.

“It ultimately comes down to us on the pitch. When we cross that white line we need to play well and get the points,” he said.

“It’s all well and good with tactics and the technical side of it, but when you’re over the white line you need to want it and have the fight and desire to get the result because that’s what will keep us up."

He added: “Everyone involved in this club wants us to stay up that’s the big, big target now.

"We need to do that in whatever way possible. It’s good we’re still in the cup, it’s a big competition and it’ll create a good atmosphere if we can do well in the game against Wigan.

"But the big objective is to stay in the Premier League.”

Wigan have beaten West Ham, Bournemouth and Manchester City to reach the last eight and Sims is wary of the challenge they pose.

“Everyone’s seen the result against City on TV, and that’s a massive achievement to beat City who are flying in the Premier League,” he said.

“It’s not going to be easy and we know that. When you get to this stages it’s not going to be easy whoever you face.

“They’ve beaten three Premier League teams, but we’ll do our work exploit their weaknesses.”
