The last meeting ended in a 2-2 draw between the two sides in 2013 a Premier League game.
Wigan are aiming to knock out their fourth Premier League club from the FA Cup this season. So far, they have eliminated Bournemouth, West Ham and Manchester City.
However, they come up against a Southampton side who have won 18 out of their last 19 FA Cup ties against lower league opposition.
So how do the two sides line up? Check out the confirmed teams below.
Mark Hughes can look forward to a trip to Wembley after his first game in charge of Southampton ended League One Wigan Athletic’s hopes of another FA Cup fairy tale.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares’ second half goals settled a fiercely contested quarter-final in treacherous conditions at the DW Stadium, but while this was the victorious start Hughes would have hoped for, it will also have reinforced the scale of the challenge he faces on the South Coast.
Second best in the first half when they were lucky not to be behind, Southampton rallied after the interval, presumably after some strong words from Hughes at half-time. Yet, on another day, they could have shot themselves in the foot as the Welshman was given an early insight into this team’s troubles in front of goal.
Either side of Hojbjerg turning in Dusan Tadic’s corner, a galling sight for Wigan, who had tried and failed to take advantage of so many similar set piece situations before then, Manolo Gabbiadini had offered a very clear snapshot of why goals have been so hard to come by in their battle against Premier League relegation.
It had seemed easier for the Italy striker to miss than score in the 58th minute when a careless back pass from Nathan Byrne presented him with a golden opportunity to score. With only Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton to beat from eight yards, Gabbiadini fired straight at him. It was a good save but a dreadful miss and there was worse to come for the Italian.
Ten minutes after Hojbjerg scored, Southampton won a penalty when Dan Burn brought down Gabbadini, latching on to Nathan Redmond’s lovely through ball. It was a perfect chance to put the game to bed but Gabbiadini stepped up and watched on forlornly as Walton pushed aside his spotkick.
Giant-killers Wigan Athletic of the third tier, who eliminated Manchester City in the fifth round, bid to continue their dream FA Cup run against a relegation-threatened Southampton side looking to find form under newly appointed manager Mark Hughes.
Following the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday evening, Hughes was appointed this week and took charge of his first training session on Thursday ahead of this tie.
He has been tasked with keeping Southampton in the Premier League, so this could be seen as the perfect opening match for him to assess his players with the pressure off and the potential of a morale-boosting place in the FA Cup semi-finals at stake.
