U18 Report: Saints 1-1 Reading

Show/hide article…

The home side took the lead deservedly, before the leveller arrived seven minutes later, and the remainder of the game was played out with relative stalemate.

The freezing temperatures and having not played a competitive fixture for three weeks, inevitably meant a slow start to Saints’ protection of their nine-game unbeaten run.

The home side conceded the first couple of chances, before springing in to life themselves, and fashioning an opportunity for Kornelius Hansen who shot a yard wide from a tight angle.

But Saints were soon back to their enterprising selves, as Robise fired Craig Fleming’s youngsters in to the lead. Latching on to a Reading mistake, the forward pounced, used his pace to accelerate forward, and smashed the ball emphatically past Gabriel Rosario.

The advantage was only to last seven minutes, as full-back Wilson provided a quick Reading riposte. Receiving the ball on the half turn in the area, Wilson rather skewed his shot, but managed to squeeze it past an unsighted Adam Parkes.

And Parkes had to be alert after the restart, as Khalid Simmo had crept forward undetected, but the shot’s lack of pace was owing to the recovery run of Kayne Ramsey.

The conditions quickly worsened at Staplewood, as snow fell heavily and temperatures plummeted. The white ball was soon replaced by a yellow version.

Never hurried, and always finding pockets of space, Will Smallbone delivered a searching ball in to the area in the 70th minute, which was attacked well by Christoph Klarer. The header sailed wide of the target, but the home side continued to carve openings.

Carrying the impetus, Jonathan Afolabi had a few half chances, while his opposite number, Adam Little also went close for Reading.

Parkes made a superb low save from substitute Shamar Moore late on, but neither side could find a second-half breakthrough, and battling through the conditions, were forced to accept a share of the spoils.

Butterfield: We were below par

Show/hide article…

Saints gleaned a point from the tie, but perhaps didn’t showcase as much quality as what has been on offer since the turn of the year, with Butterfield commenting that he felt the squad lacked sharpness after a three week break in fixtures.

Despite that, the Under-18s unbeaten streak - dating back to October - continues, and Saints’ youngsters now have a couple of weeks on the training field before their next game in early April.

“It was a disappointing performance if you compare it with the standards we’ve set this season,” Butterfield asserted. "There weren’t many individual performances that were of the level we expect.

"The positive out of it is that we’ve managed to get a point, and Adam Parkes made some good saves late on to guarantee the point.

"On Monday we need to get back on the training pitch, and get back to what they’re good at because we were below par today.

“We had boys returning from injuries, but I would say as a whole we weren’t totally at the races. We’re out of the routine of games, which isn’t helpful, but the positives are that we’ve collected a point, and that unbeaten run is maintained since last October.”

Southampton striker Austin may return for West Ham clash

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton striker Charlie Austin has stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury and could return in time for their next Premier League game against West Ham United at the end of the month, the club’s new manager Mark Hughes has said.

Austin has not played for 17th-placed Southampton since picking up the injury in December’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town, a game in which he headed the opener to take his league tally to six goals from 16 appearances.

“We’ve been speaking to Charlie over the last two days and he’s really encouraged by how it’s going,” Hughes, who took over from the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino on Wednesday, told the club’s website (www.southamptonfc.com).

“We’ve got a chance of integrating him for short periods next week. If we can do that, we can speed up his progress… with a bit of luck, if we can get him ready for West Ham that’s a massive positive.”

Southampton visit third-tier Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday before returning to league action on March 31 with a trip to West Ham. Saints have 28 points, two behind the Hammers and just one above the relegation zone.

Soccer Saturday Super 6: Jackpot won thanks to late Sheffield Wednesday winner

Show/hide article…

The £1million Soccer Saturday Super 6 jackpot has been won by 59-year-old Jacqueline Packham thanks to an injury-time Sheffield Wednesday winner.

Atdhe Nuhiu secured a 2-1 victory for Wednesday at Yorkshire rivals Leeds with his goal in the first minute of injury-time at Elland Road.

That meant three points for the Owls and one million reasons for Jacqueline from Hailsham in East Sussex to celebrate!

Bournemouth also netted late to defeat West Brom 2-1 when Junior Stanislas struck in the 89th minute.

In the Premier League, Crystal Palace won 2-0 at Huddersfield and Everton defeated Stoke 2-1 to help Jacqueline on the way to the top prize.

Sheffield United’s goalless encounter with Nottingham Forest and the 1-1 draw between Brentford and Middlesbrough were also part of Jacqueline’s successful selections in the free-to-play Soccer Saturday Super 6 game.

Soccer Saturday host Jeff Stelling now has to hand over his famous golden briefcase but he encouraged Jacqueline to invest some of her winnings in his favourite football club, Hartlepool United.

There is no word yet on whether Jacqueline will take his advice.

Enter next Saturday’s round of the Super 6 game via this link with a £250,000 jackpot up for grabs. Sky Bet League One and League Two lead the way as Premier League and Championship clubs take a rest for the international break.
