Opposition View: Wigan

Show/hide article…

The Latics have already seen off three top-flight sides en route to the last eight, including runaway Premier League leaders Man City in the previous round.

That result has sparked a wave of optimism around the League One promotion hopefuls, but Cook is not underestimating the threat posed by Saints.

“In our dressing room, we’re fully aware what we’re about to engage with,” Cook said.

“We’ve had a great cup run. The Bournemouth home game, the draw at Bournemouth was fantastic, the West Ham game was a great game for us, the Man City game purely on the result takes all the limelight.

“And now we go into a game on Sunday where people are actually saying to us it’s a 50-50 game. As a manager, and a football fan for a long time, I don’t see it as a 50-50 game. I’d love to tell everyone I do, but I don’t see it as that at all.

“If we were lucky enough to get through – and we’re under no illusions how difficult that will be – where we are as a club and a team, to go into an FA Cup semi-final and such a great occasion, for me it would be a sense of achievement like we’ve done enough in the FA Cup.

“What will be, will be from there. Certainly, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. But we are allowed to dream a little bit.”

The DW Stadium will provide the stage for Mark Hughes’s first game in charge of Saints following his appointment as the club’s new manager on Wednesday.

“Mark Hughes is a fantastic manager for a fantastic club and team,” Cook added.

“We’ve got our hands full. It’s going to be a great game and another great occasion in the FA Cup.

“It’ll be a great day for everyone to come and watch us, and you never know, we could end up getting to Wembley.”

THE MATCH

Wigan Athletic vs Southampton

Sunday 18th March, 1:30pm GMT

Emirates FA Cup

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints make the trip to Wigan for their FA Cup quarter final tie this weekend, with a sem-final at Wembley the reward for the victors.

The 2013 winners produced a shock result against runaway Premier League leaders Man City in the fifth round, and are contenders for promotion to the Championship after a strong League One campaign.

Saints beat West Brom 2-1 at The Hawthorns to progress to the last eight, with goals from Wesley Hoedt and Dušan Tadić, and will be hoping new boss Mark Hughes can begin his managerial stint with a win.

TEAM NEWS

Wigan: Devante Cole, James Vaughan and Donervon Daniels will all be missing for Wigan due to their earlier involvement in the FA Cup for Fleetwood Town, Sunderland and Rochdale respectively.

Star man Nick Powell picked up an injury during their midweek victory over Bradford City and will also be absent.

Southampton: Charlie Austin is said to be making significant progress, but will not feature this weekend. Mark Hughes indicated that the striker may yet play an important part in the remaining eight Premier League games of the season.

Question marks over the fitness of Steven Davis and Maya Yoshida remain, after respective spells on the sidelines, with Davis likely to miss out, but Yoshida in contention to return.

FORM GUIDE

Wigan’s previous five:

TOP PERFORMERS

With 11 strikes to his name, Nick Powell is Wigan’s most potent league goalscorer, while striker Will Grigg leads the charts with 18 in all comps (11 League One).

Powell, a former Manchester United man, has come into his own this season as the club look likely to progress from the third tier, and garnered interest from Premier League clubs during the January transfer window.

Grigg, 26, has played a vital part in Wigan’s FA Cup success to date, after accounting for West Ham and Bournemouth in previous rounds. The Northern Irish international has netted half of the Latics’ cup goals this term, including the match winner against Man City - the most by any player in this year’s FA Cup competition.

Top scorers: Will Grigg (18), Nick Powell (12), Michael Jacobs (9), Ivan Toney (6)

Most assists: Lee Evans (8), Max Power (6), Michael Jacobs (4), Gavin Massey (4), Sam Morsy (4)

Josh Sims has made a strong return to the first-team setup, and was perhaps Saints’ standout performer against Stoke at St Mary’s a fortnight ago.

It was Wesley Hoedt and Dušan Tadić that masterminded the win over West Brom to reach the last eight, with this Sunday’s Wigan clash the second time Saints will have faced lower league opposition - after easing past Fulham in the third round.

The game will be Mark Hughes’s first in charge of Saints, and he’ll be hoping to get off to a positive start, after confirming this week that he has great affinity for the competition he won repeatedly as a player.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (6), Manolo Gabbiadini (4), Dušan Tadić (4), James Ward-Prowse (4)

Most assists: Ryan Bertrand (3), Nathan Redmond (3), Dušan Tadić (3), James Ward-Prowse (3)

DID YOU KNOW

• Saints have progressed from 18 of their last 19 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division.

• This is only the fourth ever meeting between Wigan and Southampton and the second in the FA Cup – the Saints won 3-0 in a fourth round match in January 1986, with current Wigan boss Paul Cook playing for Wigan that day.

• The Latics have already eliminated three top-flight teams this season (Bournemouth, West Ham and Man City).

BIG INTERVIEW: Hughes is ready to inject some spark

Show/hide article…

After 31 minutes in the company of Mark Hughes, it is pretty easy to see why Saints have made the decision to entrust him with the task of ensuring their Premier League survival.

Hughes exuded positivity, confidence, the aura of a winner in his first time sat in front of the press at Staplewood yesterday.

Of course, he is hugely experienced in dealing with the media, and whether what he portrays is a reflection of his true views or something designed to convey a particular message we will never know.

Hughes is also hugely experienced in dealing with Premier League players. His message to them sounds as if it was fairly similar, again all surely designed for a reason.

It’s part of the attraction of hiring him, because you fancy that if Hughes is to have the ‘bounce’ effect his appointment is clearly intended to bring, then these first days will be absolutely vital, and his experience has helped him strike the perfect tone from the outset.

There is no room for sentiment or emotion from Hughes, there are no fears about upsetting egos, no sleep lost over whether players like his style or not. There is only one thing that matters – results.

“When you’ve got the luxury of a little bit more time you can build relationships and that takes time,” explained Hughes, who has eight Premier League games in which to save Saints.

“Sometimes you have to step on people’s toes and we are probably in that situation. We have got no time to wait. We have eight weeks and we have to get on with it. If we upset people along the way they will have to accept it.

“It’s about the end game and making sure we are successful when we look back on this period.

“There’s a willingness in the two days we have been here, a real energy to the club which I’ve liked, and everybody is pushing in the right direction, but we have to keep that going by winning football matches, and that is the hard bit.”

Hughes says he has already demanded intensity from training sessions, and confessed he has been told that some of that was perhaps lacking, though he went very careful not to criticise his predecessor Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked on Monday.

“Everybody works in a different way and there’s no right or wrong way. The only right way is to win football matches,” insisted the 54-year-old.

“I work a certain way and I like a certain level on a daily basis and I’ve seen that and I can only judge them on what I’ve seen in the two days I’ve been with them and I’ve been pleased with that.

“When you walk into a club you are apprehensive as to what you will find – are they disenfranchised, are they fragmented as a group, are their levels too low that you don’t have the time to bring them up? I haven’t found that which is encouraging.

“I have got a good group, a willing group that is ready to work to make sure we are successful from now until the end of the season.”

There seemed almost a wide-eyed surprise from Hughes that he found himself sat in front of the press as Saints manager. Certainly it seemed to come out of the blue for him.

It is only a short-term contract with just eight games to save Saints from relegation, plus the FA Cup – though of course success could lead to longer.

Hughes explained: “The club was quite clear about what they were offering. I could have taken the easy option and not taken it on board.

“I’ve never been relegated and a lot of lot of managers wear that badge a little too keenly. Clearly I’ve put it at risk and that doesn’t bother me. It’s about being successful here at a club I’ve got an affinity and history with.

“I just wanted to help. Given my experience and what I’ve been through as a manager and a player, it’s a good fit.”

Hughes, of course, does have an affinity with Saints.

He spent two years at the club towards the end of his playing career.

Things have changed a bit at Staplewood since then. When he was playing the idea of training ground development for Saints was erecting another temporary building, now they have a state-of-the art facility. Indeed, he even joked that the only thing he recognised was an old hedgerow.

Still, Hughes’ previous Saints spell, which included the famous ‘Great Escape’ relegation battle, at least means he understands a lot of the culture of the club.

“I came at the fag-end of my career, which was a shame,” smiled Hughes when talking about his time playing at The Dell.

“The first year was a little difficult I have to say. I think they still call it the ‘Great Escape’.

“Even now I don’t know how we did it.

“It was a difficult time because we were always in the bottom three up until the last six or seven games of the season.

“So we’ve been in that situation before and been able to get out of it. Maybe that will help me.”

While it is clear that Hughes’ top priority is to keep Saints in the Premier League, there is the small matter of an FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan to contend with first.

It represents a great chance for a win, a feel-good factor, Cup progress, and for Hughes to really assess a few players ahead of a huge top-flight fixture at West Ham in a fortnight’s time.

“I have always used Cup runs as a real positive,” explained Hughes.

“I think they can help your form. If you are struggling and you have a good result and you progress you have that to look forward to and that confidence can lead into your league form as well.

“I don’t see a game against Wigan in a quarter-final as hindrance. I see it as a real positive and one we can use to good effect.”

Mark Hughes banking on Southampton survival and FA Cup success

Show/hide article…

Mark ‘Sparky’ Hughes is ready to deliver some shock treatment to revive Southampton’s season.

The new boss admits he has no time to “pussyfoot around” after taking over with the club he used to play for now fearing for their Premier League future with just eight games left.

He said: “Sometimes you have to step on people’s toes and we are probably in that situation. We’ve got no time to wait.

“We haven’t got a great amount of time to go around the edges and pussyfoot around.

“We have to address things very quickly. If we upset people along the way, they will have to accept it.”

Hughes’ first game in charge sees the Saints travel to Wigan for Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final.

He said: “I am sure if we stay up and win the FA Cup they will forgive me (for upsetting them).

“That’s what I am banking on anyway!”

Hughes is raring to go again after just 67 days out of the game since his sacking by Stoke City in January.

And he wasted no time getting his message across to his new squad in an opening address on Thursday, having been told that one problem under former boss Mauricio Pellegrino was a lack of intensity.

“It probably put them a little bit on their toes that they needed to start performing from the off,” he said.

The former Manchester City manager is familiar with the squad he has inherited, which contains players he has tried to sign before, including Shane Long, Mario Lemina and Cedric Soares.

“I’m surprised they are in the position they are,” he said.

The club, though, has “changed remarkably” from the one he played for at “the fag end” of his career” between 1998 and 2000. The Welshman joked that only “a little bit of hedgerow” was recognisable at Southampton’s now transformed Hampshire HQ where he was unveiled yesterday.

But the situation they and Hughes, 54, now find themselves in, battling for Premier League survival, is nothing new.

“The first year was a little difficult,” he remembered of his playing stint with Saints. “I think they still call it the Great Escape.

“So we’ve been in that situation before and were able to get out of it.

“Maybe that will help me.”

Hughes on Wigan encounter

Show/hide article…

Saints will look to book their place in the semi final of the competition in Hughes’s first game in charge after being appointed on Wednesday night.

And Hughes has outlined an intention to give the supporters something to smile about again after a positive couple of days on the training pitch.

“It’s been really positive. We’ve been really pleased with the level in terms of technical ability first and foremost, but also in terms of the players attitude and application which has been first class," Hughes reflected.

“It’s what I expected, it’s what I demand and I haven’t been disappointed.

“We’re looking for quick wins. We need to improve our confidence as we’ve been on a run that has tested everybody.

“We’ve got to turn a little bit of negativity into positives and I sense that the players understand that.

“There’s concern there given our current situation but we can park the Premier League for a short period and just focus on getting through to the latter stages of a great competition.

“It was a competition that was good for me during my playing career and I was very fortunate to win it on a number of occasions, so it’s always figured highly.

“The intention and the aim is to win it, that would be a bonus but we can use it as a positive as well to lead into the league games."

Hughes, whose side will be backed by 4,283 supporters for the televised clash, added: “We’ve got a huge following going to Wigan, a following that we’ll need now until the end of the season and we’ve got to give the fans something to grasp and allow them to enjoy their football again.

“It’s been difficult times, but we’re in the here and now and it’s about time we started winning again and putting smiles on people’s faces.”
