Forster fixtures tempt Fantasy backing

Show/hide article…

Fantasy Premier League managers often resist trading goalkeepers in and out of their squads, and this makes initial start-of-season selections all the more vital.

With the 2017/18 fixtures now available, we can begin to assess those with the greatest potential over the opening months of the new season.

Price remains a big factor in this position and the promoted sides will undoubtedly influence our thinking.

Favourable fixtures draw the eye to Huddersfield Town, Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United, though the first-choice goalkeeper for each club currently remains uncertain.

However, there are notable targets to consider elsewhere.

A hugely promising schedule up until November puts Forster on the radar.

Ever-present for Saints last season, despite ranking second to Heaton for points per million for goalkeepers (26.8), he struggled to gain FPL investment until their late Double Gameweeks.

But Southampton play only one of last term’s top six – Manchester United at St Mary’s Stadium - over their opening 11 Gameweeks.

Forster is unlikely to demand more than his £5.0m outlay from the previous season and could offer outstanding value over the early months and beyond.

With 113 points, Foster was largely overshadowed by six-goal centre-back Gareth McAuley as a Baggies option last season.

But Foster is likely to remain priced at £4.5m and could be a more attractive proposition for the new campaign.

Head coach Tony Pulis will target an improvement on a disappointing return of six clean sheets, and their fixtures present an early opportunity for progress.

They play only one of last season’s top six over their first nine Gameweeks, with AFC Bournemouth, Stoke City, West Ham United and Watford all visiting The Hawthorns.

The Clarets captain topped both the FPL goalkeeper and value standings in 2016/17 after providing 29.2 points per million.

Initially priced at £4.5m, Heaton will likely be more expensive this term and has been handed a mixed bag of early fixtures.

But Burnley’s home form is key to Heaton’s appeal and they begin the season with six very attractive Turf Moor encounters, including visits from both Huddersfield and Newcastle.

The early away matches are far more testing but, with a save every 22.1 minutes (second only to Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford’s 19.3) Heaton has proved he can offer points against the toughest opposition.

Southampton and Brentford to support Grenfell Tower Fund

Show/hide article…

Brentford and Southampton will donate any profit they receive from their pre-season friendly on July 22 to the Grenfell Tower Disaster Fund.

The friendly is to be played at Griffin Park, situated close to Grenfell Tower, and Brentford are hoping to put on other fundraising activities on the day, as well as donating the profits from ticket sales.

The fund was set up following the blaze at Grenfell Tower in order to support those affected and it has already raised over £130,000 from donations.

Mark Devlin, CEO of Brentford, released a statement on the club website.

“The Club is situated relatively close to the site of the disaster, and we wanted to do something to support our community and those affected,” he said.

"Brentford is very much a Community Club and I’m delighted that Southampton have joined with us in donating the profits from the ticket sales of our Friendly match.

“We also anticipate there will be other fundraising activities on the day and we hope that as many fans as possible will be able to attend the game, so that we can raise as much as possible.”

Conte thought Chelsea had agreed a deal for Van Dijk before going on holiday - report

Show/hide article…

The Chelsea manager believed a deal to land Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk was ‘virtually agreed’, according to the Telegraph.

A new central defender is high on Conte’s hit list following the departure of skipper John Terry.

Conte enjoyed great success last term with a three-at-the-back formation but has limited competition for Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Van Dijk has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea.

It was claimed last month that private talks had been held with the Holland international’s representatives.

Frank de Boer not in contention to take over at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Frank De Boer, the bookmakers’ favourite for the Southampton job, is not understood to be in contention to replace Claude Puel.

Former Ajax and Inter Milan head coach De Boer had talks with Crystal Palace over their vacancy last week but is believed to still be waiting for a response from the Selhurst Park club, who are hoping to appoint Sam Allardyce’s replacement next week.

Mauricio Pellegrino is known to be in the mix for both vacancies and reports in his native Argentina this week claimed he is close to sealing the Palace role.

The former Liverpool defender and assistant manager impressed with Alavés last season, taking them to ninth in La Liga and the Copa del Rey final.

Southampton are understood to have sounded out Thomas Tuchel, formerly of Borussia Dortmund, but the German is looking for a Champions League club with which to resume his promising coaching career.

Ward-Prowse and Redmond feature in Sweden draw

Show/hide article…

Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse captained the Young Lions, with both him and Nathan Redmond completing the full 90 minutes.

With Jack Stephens and Matt Targett watching on from the sidelines, Ward-Prowse came close to opening the scoring when he saw his excellent free-kick turned behind by Sweden goalkeeper Anton Cajtoft.

Aidy Boothroyd’s men were thankful to their own stopper though late on, after Ben Chillwell brought down Linus Wahlqvist in the box.

Wahlqvist dusted himself down to take the penalty, but he was thwarted by Everton’s club-record signing Jordan Pickford as he stuck out an arm to preserve a point.

They will now turn their attentions to their next game against Slovakia in Group A on Monday 19th June (5pm BST).

Saints pair indebted to Everton’s new keeper as England U21s draw against Sweden

Show/hide article…

Jordan Pickford was England Under-21s’ hero as his late penalty save earned the Young Lions a 0-0 draw against defending champions Sweden in their European Under-21 Championship opener in Poland tonight.

The new £30million Everton goalkeeper kept out Linus Wahlqvist’s spot-kick to help Aidy Boothroyd’s side cling onto a point.

Boothroyd had started with two of the four Saints players in his squad - skipper James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond.

Defenders Jack Stephens and Matt Targett were on the bench.

Pickford became the world’s third most expensive keeper when he completed his move to the Toffees from Sunderland on Thursday, and swiftly proved his value.

England failed to break down the holders, although Tammy Abraham twice went close and Ben Chilwell’s deflected effort hit the bar.

Pawel Cibicki struck the woodwork for Sweden as, in front of the watching Football Association hierarchy - including senior boss Gareth Southgate and technical director Dan Ashworth - England rode their luck.

Group A also includes hosts Poland and Slovakia and, with only the three group winners and best runners-up going through, England must improve.

England did score an early victory before the game when a thunderstorm soaked the Kolporter Arena.

Sweden had not agreed to have the pitch watered as they felt it would give England an advantage, only for their stubborn approach to backfire because of the weather.

And the holders also offered resistance on the pitch as England dominated without finding an early breakthrough.

Sweden held firm against England’s tempo and high pressing line and Abraham lifted an eight-yard volley over after 10 minutes.

The Chelsea striker, who scored 26 goals on loan at Bristol City last season, also bundled his way through only to be thwarted by goalkeeper Anton Cajtoft.

It was a promising start but Sweden began to find their feet and carved out the best chance after 26 minutes.

Cibicki and Gustav Engvall combined on the right to bamboozle Nathaniel Chalobah only for Cibicki to shoot over from six yards.

England were faced with much more of a battle than the first 20 minutes suggested but Jacob Murphy drilled over before Abraham went close a minute before the break.

The 19-year-old forward - four years younger than some of his opponents - looked raw but acrobatically directed a volley over as England ended the half on top.

England were saved by the woodwork after 57 minutes.

Cibicki had been a constant threat and the Malmo forward showed exactly why when he was allowed too much time on the edge of the area to curl a brilliant effort which cracked off the angle of post and bar with Pickford beaten.

Minutes later Lewis Baker shot over from Ward-Prowse’s neat corner and Chilwell’s 30-yard deflected effort looped onto the bar.

But England were stretched at the back with substitute Carlos Strandberg causing problems and Mason Holgate executed a brilliant tackle to stop the Club Brugge striker running clean through.

The fact the break came from England’s own corner - after Cajtoft turned Ward-Prowse’s free-kick wide - sounded alarm bells.

And the Young Lions were rescued by Pickford with nine minutes left when he capped a fine personal week with a penalty save after Chilwell clattered into Wahlqvist.

The Leicester defender appeared to get some of the ball but it was a reckless lunge in a needless situation.

But Pickford stood up to Wahlqvist to beat away the IFK Norrkoping defender’s chipped penalty before gathering Strandberg’s follow-up as England survived.
