Revealed! England U-21s all-time record goal scorers ranked

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond scored his 10th goal for England’s U-21s on Monday evening to help his side take one step closer to the European Championship semi-finals.

The Southampton star received his first call-up for the senior squad back in March, but the winger showed his dedication to his country by opting to play in the summer tournament instead of heading on holiday.

Redmond became only the fourth player to reach double figures in the scoring charts for England’s second-tier side.

But, who else has starred as a youngster for the Three Lions? Click the right arrow above to find out….

England display sheds light on Southampton duo

Show/hide article…

The form of Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond for England’s Under-21 side should be of keen interest to Fantasy Premier League managers.

The midfield pair combined for England’s winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Slovakia in Monday’s UEFA U21 European Championship group match.

The result happened on the same day as an important announcement for FPL managers, as West Ham United and Saints agreed to switch their encounter on Saturday 19 August from London Stadium to St Mary’s Stadium.

This means that Southampton will start the season with three home fixtures over the opening four Gameweeks, boosting the FPL appeal of their players.

Redmond attracted early investment last season. Listed as a midfielder but playing up front, he peaked at 482,828 owners by Gameweek 3.

His popularity diminished after struggling to turn early promise into consistent FPL points, but he still caught the eye in 2016/17.

Redmond fired more shots on goal than any other Southampton player (83) and was second only to Dusan Tadic for chances created (57 v 66).

Those numbers highlight his importance and suggest potential to return both goals and assists in the upcoming campaign.

A set-piece master, he enjoyed his best season in 2016/17 not only in terms of pitch-time, but also across various key statistics.

His minutes-per-shot average improved from 54.8 minutes in 2015/16 to 44.9 minutes.

He also created a chance every 43.8 minutes, compared with 47.9 minutes in the previous season.

Most significantly for FPL managers, Ward-Prowse scored or assisted a total of 38% of Southampton’s goals when on the pitch.

Both Redmond and Ward-Prowse seem likely to retain similar initial FPL price tags. At around £5.5m Ward-Prowse, in particular, could be a major attraction.

They will face only one of last season’s top six in the opening 11 Gameweeks, of which seven are at St Mary’s Stadium.

England Under-21s: Nathan Redmond chasing Alan Shearer’s Young Lions goalscoring record

Show/hide article…

Southampton winger Redmond struck his 10th goal for the Young Lions as they came from behind to beat Slovakia 2-1 on Monday night. He is now just three behind former England captain Shearer’s all-time record of 13. And Redmond will be bidding to stay on the goal trail with the semi finals now in sight. A win against hosts Poland tomorrow night will guarantee Aidy Boothroyd’s boys a place in the last-four of what will be Redmond’s last finals.

“I’m just going to keep plugging away for the team and if the chances come take them” Redmond, 23, said: “I’m aware, I’m just going to keep plugging away for the team and if the chances come take them. “I’ve seen it about, about the record. It’s not something which has been really on my mind. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my Under-21 and England youth team career as a whole. The whole development stage has got me to this point.” While Redmond’s goalscoring feat is already impressive, it’s not a patch on Shearer’s – who scored his 13 goals in just 11 games.

Redmond has taken 36 just to get to hit double figures. But he will have a shot at beating the former ex-Newcastle star’s total if England capitalise on their win over the Slovaks. Defender Alfie Mawson revealed how a half-time row helped turn things around after Boothroyd’s boys were trailing at the break. Redmond added: “A few players were frustrated but the gaffer calmed us down and said relax, enjoying playing and we will get an opportunity, and we got two.

“I think that was key. We have a lot of players who have been here before and some who haven’t. People are on different wavelengths. “Some want to do too well to impress and some want to do too well because it’s their last one. “There’s a lot of challenges to overcome but we did that with a win and the lads were outstanding. “I wouldn’t say it’s a feeling of relief. We stuck to the game plan, we knew what we wanted to do and we knew it was going to be a tough game. We believe in our ability.”

Southampton to name Mauricio Pellegrino as new boss - but they want long-term commitment

Show/hide article…

Pellegrino, 45, is Saints’ top target to replace Claude Puel following the Frenchman’s sacking last week.

But vice chairman Les Reed, leading the hunt for Puel’s successor, wants guarantees the Argentine is committed to a long-term project.

Saints have had their fingers burnt in the past with Pellegrino’s fellow countryman Mauricio Pochettino deserting them for Tottenham.

And Ronald Koeman jumped ship by heading to Everton last summer.

Rodriguez edges closer to Saints exit

Show/hide article…

JAY Rodriguez looks finally set to depart Saints this summer with West Bromwich Albion keen to resurrect a £12m move for the striker.

The 27-year-old striker has been close to leaving St Mary’s in the last two transfer windows and that has been followed by further talk of his departure recently.

Rodriguez is keen to find regular football, having struggled to nail down a place at Saints.

His old club Burnley and Newcastle have considered a move.

However, it is long-term admirer Tony Pulis, the Albion manager, who is said to have registered a firm interest, with the Baggies eager to bolster their attacking options.

A deal is unlikely to be struck until the end of the month, though, with Rodriguez away on holiday.

It would come as little surprise if the England international were to exit St Mary’s this summer, after a frustrating season in which he played 34 times but started just nine Premier League games and scored six goals in the all competitions.

He was on the verge of a loan move last summer, with both Hull City and West Brom.

However, Rodriguez, who has had to battle injuries and was sidelined for more than a year from April 2014, stayed at Saints to fight for his place after netting in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland at St Mary’s last August.

He showed glimpses of his ability, especially in the 3-1 win over AFC Bournemouth in December, when he netted a brace.

But, after top-scorer Charlie Austin’s injury, neither Shane Long or Rodriguez could provide a regular source of goals and Saints, as a result, brought in Manolo Gabbiadini to add more firepower.

That restricted Rodriguez’s game-time even more as he started just two of Saints’ remaining 15 games in all competitions.

In January, West Brom again, along with Hull, Sunderland and Watford looked at Rodriguez, but a deal could not be struck with Saints unwilling to do business, because, until Gabbiadini’s arrival on deadline day, they were a man down in attack in Austin’s absence.

Albion have now returned for the attacker after relying on Salomon Rondon and Hal Robson-Kanu as their only two strikers for the majority of last season.

Saido Berahino was sold to Stoke in January but missed the first half of the season having served a drugs ban and being ruled unfit by the club.
