Redmond: We must keep believing

Show/hide article…

The Saints winger was the matchwinner against Slovakia, after the Young Lions had fallen behind, before Swansea’s Alfie Mawson levelled.

And with tournament hosts Poland still to play in their group, Redmond knows how tough it will prove to get to the stage of the competition they desire.

“It was important for us to keep believing in ourselves and keep fighting to show the grit and determination to get through today,” Redmond said.

“We’re not expecting anything less on Thursday, we know we’ve got terrific support back home and we’re aware through social media and that they’re watching and it’s helping us get through.

“We’re not worried about hostile atmospheres as we have players who have played in games in hostile environments before, so we believe in our own ability and in how we play so we want to take that into the games.

“We wanted to get a win in the first game, but we couldn’t do that and had to settle for a point on the board, so we knew a win was important today.

“But we go out to try and win every single game and that’s not going to change.”

The Blues are expected to splash the cash this summer with Champions League football returning to Stamford Bridge next season.

Starsport understands Romelu Lukaku has already agreed terms to re-join the Blues this summer.

And according to the Evening Standard, Antonio Conte wants to bring in top defenders as well.

They say the Italian will loan out Kurt Zouma this summer.

Chelsea want the France international to play regular first-team football after being sidelined for a year with a knee ligament injury.

The Standard say Lyon and Nice are keen on the 22-year-old but Conte will not loan him out until he has signed a new centre-half.

Time is running out as Redmond chases Shearer record

Show/hide article…

NATHAN Redmond is three goals away from joining Alan Shearer as England Under-21s’ all-time top-scorer after netting a crucial goal at the European Championships.

But time is running out for the 23-year-old to go level with Shearer and Francis Jeffers, who both command a 13-goal haul.

Redmond will no longer be eligible to play for the under-21s after the European Championships in Poland this month.

That means the St Mary’s star has a maximum of three games to achieve this feat in, with just one group game and potentially the semi-final and final left to go.

Redmond netted the winning goal in the Young Lions’ comeback victory over Slovakia on Monday night to put them top of Group A with a game to go against hosts Poland on Thursday.

The strike, which Saints team-mate James Ward-Prowse set up, saw him take his total to 10 goals in 36 under-21s appearances.

He is now fourth in the scoring rankings behind Saido Berahino (11) and leading pair Jeffers and Shearer, who netted all of his under-21s’ goals while at Saints.

Against Slovakia, Aidy Boothroyd’s side went behind to a Martin Chrien on 22 minutes, edging them towards another disastrous exit from the tournament before Alfie Mawson and Redmond hit back.

“It was a tough first half, we were getting a little frustrated and the manager said to us to just keep our cool and composure and keep playing,” said Redmond.

“That’s what we did and it fell to me today and lucky enough I was there to put it away.

“We got ourselves together at half time in the dressing room, Aidy got us together and relaxed and refocused.

“Alfie’s goal was vital to get us back in the game and then just dug in and kept going. It was a great pass from James Ward-Prowse to find me and there was no other thought in my mind but just to score.”

Redmond, who is playing at his third Euros, knows that hosts Poland will desperate for victory in front of their home fans after losing and drawing their opening games.

But England are ready to show their “grit and determination” once more.

“If you get to the U21 Finals, you are going to be a good team and Sweden were a great side and difficult to break down and it was the same with Slovakia today,” he explained.

“It was important for us to keep believing in ourselves and keep fighting to show the grit and determination to get through.

“We’re not expecting anything less on Thursday, we know we’ve got terrific support back home and we’re aware through social media and that they’re watching and it’s helping us get through.

“We’re not worried about hostile atmospheres as we have players who have played in games in hostile environments before, so we believe in our own ability and in how we play so we want to take that into the games.”

West Brom make approach to Southampton to sign Jay Rodriguez

Show/hide article…

West Brom have opened talks with Southampton over the signing of Jay Rodriguez, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News HQ understands the Saints value Rodriguez somewhere in the region of £12m.

The 27-year-old’s future at St Mary’s has been discussed numerous times with the club since he recovered from long-term injury in 2015.

Rodriguez missed the 2014-15 season in its entirety with ruptured knee ligaments but signed a new contract on his return in May that year.

The following season he started just three Premier League games under Ronald Koeman, however, and wanted to move on to a new club last summer.

The Saints refused to sell the former Burnley player but he started only nine Premier League games last term under Claude Puel, who was sacked last week, and has now been told he can leave for the right fee.

Rodriguez signed for Southampton from Burnley upon their promotion to the Premier League in 2012 and he thrived under Mauricio Pochettino, who was previously interested in taking him to Tottenham.

GOSSIP: Saints brace for bids of up to £15m for Rodriguez

Show/hide article…

WEST Bromwich Albion are holding talks with Jay Rodriguez over a £12m switch from Saints, according to a national newspaper.

The Telegraph report that Tony Pulis is keen on the striker, who netted six goals last term, and want to tie up a deal by the end of the month.

The Daily Mail meanwhile suggest that Saints want £15m for the England international, with old club Burnley and Newcastle United also interested in the 27-year-old.

It would come as little surprise if Rodriguez were to exit St Mary’s this summer, after a frustrating season.

He was on the verge of a loan move last summer, with both Hull City and the Baggies showing an interest.

However, Rodriguez, who has had to battle injuries and was sidelined for more than a year from April 2014, stayed at Saints to fight for his place after netting in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland at St Mary’s last August.

He showed glimpses of his ability, especially in the 3-1 win over AFC Bournemouth in December, when he netted a brace.

But, after top-scorer Charlie Austin’s injury, neither Shane Long or Rodriguez could provide a regular source of goals and Saints, as a result, brought in Manolo Gabbiadini to add more firepower.

That restricted Rodriguez’s game-time even more as he started just two of Saints’ remaining 15 games in all competitions.

West Brom, Burnley and Newcastle in for £15m Jay Rodriguez

Show/hide article…

West Bromwich Albion have made an opening offer for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez.

The 27-year-old is valued at around £15m by Southampton but Albion hope to strike a compromise around £12m.

Newcastle and Burnley have also enquired about the one-time England international but he is keen to link up with Tony Pulis who has made attempts to sign him in the past two windows.

Southampton have still to appoint a new manager which may delay negotiations while the player is also understood to be away at the moment.

Southampton, meanwhile, have had an opening bid rejected for Lech Poznan defender Jan Bednarek.

West Brom to resurrect move for England star

Show/hide article…

West Brom are making a fresh attempt to sign Jay Rodriguez from Southampton.

The striker is a long-term target for Baggies boss Tony Pulis and he can leave Saints this summer.

It is understood Albion have resurrected a move with £12million likely to be enough to sign the England international.

Rodriguez has almost left St Mary’s in the last two windows with Watford, Hull and Sunderland all keen on him in January but Hull and Sunderland’s relegation has ruled them out of the running.

Had the 27-year-old left Southampton in January West Brom were frontrunners.

He has wanted to play regularly at Southampton but has struggled for game time since suffering a serious knee injury in 2014.

Rodriguez made 34 appearances for Saints last season but only nine were Premier League starts and he scored six times.

Albion are looking for new firepower after relying on Salomon Rondon and Hal Robson-Kanu as their only two strikers for the majority of last season.

Saido Berahino was sold to Stoke in January but missed the first half of the season having served a drugs ban and being ruled unfit by the club.
