Davis delighted with flexible Saints

Show/hide article…

It was the skipper, making his 200th appearance for the club, who scored the only goal of the game after just six minutes in South London.

After taking an early lead, Saints dominated possession throughout the first half before having to display a steely resistance in the face of an increased Palace threat after the interval.

ā€œWe’re delighted with the performance,ā€ Davis said.

ā€œWe started the game well and kept possession well in the first half, creating a number of chances.

ā€œIn the second half you would expect them to come into it a little bit, which they did, and to go a bit more direct.

ā€œIt’s always going to be a test with the physical nature of Benteke and the runners off him, but I thought everyone dealt with that really well and Fraser was there to pull off a couple of great saves too.

ā€œWe’ve shown both sides of the coin today in our quality in possession in the first half, and our character to keep digging in and see the game out in the second half.ā€

Davis’ goal was his first in a Southampton shirt for 16 months, celebrating a personal landmark in style.

ā€œI’m delighted,ā€ he added. ā€œIt was a good ball in from DuÅ”an, Longy has got across the front and all the keeper could do was palm it away.

ā€œIt was just important to concentrate on slotting it into that side and it was great to see it hit the back of the net.ā€

Pellegrino hails Davis impact in ā€œimportantā€ win

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino hailed his captain marvel as Steven Davis scored the winning goal on his 200th appearance for the club.

The Northern Ireland skipper’s sixth minute strike against Crystal Palace secured Pellegrino a first away win as Saints boss.

Davis was started further forward at Selhurst Park and it paid dividends.

Pellegrino said: ā€œTo score a goal is the most important for everybody, for the team.

ā€œI congratulate Steven because he is a really positive guy, always open minded to improve and help in the team.

ā€œIt is a good present for him, the goal, and hopefully he is going to score much more goals to help the team.ā€

There was also a sensational performance from summer signing Mario Lemina, who was excellent in the heart of the midfield.

ā€œMario is the profile of player that we didn’t have in the squad,ā€ reflected Pellegrino.

ā€œI think that he can help us to be stronger in the middle of the pitch, but I am not just happy about him, I am happy about everybody.

ā€œVirgil came back and he played another ten minutes and we need everybody to try to do Southampton a little bit better.ā€

After a disappointing defeat at Watford, Saints really needed a response at Palace, and they certainly got it, with the performance pleasing the manager as much as the result.

ā€œIt was an important game for us. To win on this pitch is not easy,ā€ admitted Pellegrino.

ā€œObviously everybody is happy, we are really happy, about the result, but also how we achieved the game from the beginning.

ā€œThe team was really focussed and in second ball. It is not just Benteke but the people that is around him and in front of him, because Palace have a group of players with quality.

ā€œWe controlled the ball and it is something we need to improve. We have a group of players with the quality and the capacity to keep the ball and I think we did well.

ā€œThis is important news for us, the performance of the team.ā€

Pellegrino rung the changes for the game, which included replacing Manolo Gabbiadini with Shane Long.

ā€œI imagined that at the beginning Crystal Palace pressing, a lot of balls in the air,ā€ he explained.

ā€œI thought that Shane could be a threat for them because it’s a player that runs in behind, can stretch the back four and create more space for us.

ā€œAlso he is working well and he is a player who deserves to do it and have this opportunity and I think it was a good way for him.ā€

Liverpool should have tried to sign other defenders other than Virgil van Dijk - Nicholas

Show/hide article…

That’s the opinion of Charlie Nicholas who thinks the Reds should ave had alternatives in mind.

Liverpool missed out on Van Dijk despite their summer long pursuit of the Dutch defender.

The Reds were even accused by Saints of tapping up their star man.

But in the end Van Dijk was made to stay at Southampton even after he handed a transfer request into the club.

ā€œIf you were persistent in trying to get Van Dijk, why weren’t you as persistent in getting somebody else knowing that you aren’t going to get him?ā€ he told Sky Sports.

Mauricio Pellegrino: Southampton could have scored more at Palace

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says he is ā€˜very happy’ with Southampton’s performance after they beat struggling Crystal Palace 1-0 on Saturday, but admits they could have scored more goals.

The Saints, who themselves had won just one Premier League game this season heading into the match at Selhurst Park, took all three points thanks to Steven Davis’ early goal.

ā€œI think how we achieved the game from the beginning [was pleasing], especially with the second ball which is something they are really strong at,ā€ he told Sky Sports.

"We controlled the ball and that is something that we need because we have the quality of players to keep the ball and dominate the game. We also did really well defensively from the beginning until the end.

"They created a few chances at the start, but after that, I don’t remember too many other clear chances for them. I think we should have scored another goal but I am happy with the performance.

ā€œI expected Crystal Palace in the second half would press a little bit higher and to react. They did that but after about ten minutes, that game was again [going] for us. To win at this ground is not easy and for this reason, we have to be really happy.ā€

The result takes Southampton up to eight points from their opening five games, and Pellegrino believes it is key to keep picking up points and build-up the confidence among his players.

ā€œIt is really important because we are in a process. When you are changing players, getting to know them and how they can respond in different situations,ā€ he added.

ā€œWe survived with the result and increases the confidence to work a bit better every day. For that, the result is everything.ā€

New Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson bemoans ā€˜worst possible start’

Show/hide article…

Roy Hodgson believes there is a lot of work to do after his reign as Crystal Palace manager began with a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Selhurst Park.

Hodgson replaced Frank de Boer in midweek after the Eagles had started the Premier League season with four straight defeats and no goals.

But despite the change in the dugout, it was a familiar story on the pitch as Steven Davis’ sixth-minute goal settled matters, meaning Palace have become the first ever top-flight team to lose each of their opening five league fixtures without scoring a goal.

Hodgson told Sky Sports Main Event: 'It was the worst possible start, conceding the goal so early, a team that’s obviously a little bit nervous and anxious anyway becomes even more nervous and anxious.

'I thought in the first half we were very nervous, people didn’t show any real confidence on the ball at all.

'The desire was there but unfortunately it was a frantic desire, it was a desire where you’re chasing and hoping, not a desire where you’re in control and moving the ball around well and causing the opponents lots of problems.

'The more we work together the better, I think, we will become. It’s a disappointing to get a bad start.

'You talk up the benefits and bonuses of a good start but unfortunately talk doesn’t get you that. The only thing that will get you a good start is a performance where you score more goals against the opposition and we certainly didn’t do that today.

'We’ve already had four defeats, now it’s five but nothing I can say will change those five results, nothing I can say will score a goal in those five games or give us any points from those five games. It’s a question what you do going forward.

ā€˜Confidence is an issue in every football team. But the confidence only comes when you start playing well, seeing the work that you’re trying to do pay off, in particular in terms of results. The guys this year have not had this chance, this is a further blow.’

Davis struck on his 200th appearance for Southampton, who bounced back from their defeat to Watford last week.

The Northern Ireland midfielder said: ā€˜It was an important game for us. After last week’s performance we were a little bit disappointed so it was important we came here and showed that sort of determination and edge to our game.’

Fraser Forster made a couple of important saves to ensure Southampton kept a clean sheet and this was the most pleasing aspect for manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

The Argentinian boss said: 'Defensively we did really well from the beginning until the end. They created a couple of chances at the beginning but after that I don’t remember too many clear chances for them.

'We should have scored another goal but I am happy with the performance.

ā€˜To win on this pitch is not easy, for this reason we have to be really happy.’

MK Dons 3-2 Rochdale: Seager swoops for MK Dons

Show/hide article…

Ryan Seager’s late winner secured a 3-2 triumph for MK Dons in a five-goal thriller against Rochdale.

Dale had led early on through Brad Inman and went into half-time level at 2-2 after Matt Done’s effort cancelled out Gboly Ariyibi’s double.

However, Seager smashed home his first goal of the season late on to secure the hosts a second home win of the campaign.

The visitors wasted no time netting the opener after just eight minutes via Inman’s powerful left-footed strike.

Robbie Neilson’s side levelled less than five minutes later through Ariyibi, who was allowed the time to fire a right-footed effort past Dale stopper Brendan Moore.

Ariyibi bagged his second of the game with a long-range hit on 41 minutes before Keith Hill’s men made it 2-2 just a minute later through Done.

But Seager found himself in space on the edge of the visitors’ box seven minutes from time, finding the top corner to secure MK’s third league win of the season.

Davis strikes as Palace set unwanted record

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis scored an early winner as Southampton defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 in Roy Hodgson’s first match as Eagles manager.

The home side started on the front foot but Saints took the lead on six minutes when Davis slotted the ball into the bottom corner after Wayne Hennessey diverted Dusan Tadic’s shot into his path.

Palace started to come back into the match and Fraser Forster saved well from Jason Puncheon and Christian Benteke, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek fired a shot just wide.

But Southampton rode out the pressure and could have doubled their lead only for Hennessey to save from Cedric Soares.

Saints have eight points from their five matches, while Palace remain bottom after becoming the first side in English top-flight history to open the season with five defeats and no goals scored.
