Watch match highlights of Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Roy Hodgson’s first game as Crystal Palace manager ended in a 1-0 defeat to Southampton as they set two unwanted records at Selhurst Park.

Steven Davis’ early goal for Saints means the Eagles have become the first top-flight team to lose each of their opening five league fixtures without scoring a goal.

And their pursuit of a first Premier League goal of the campaign is now also longer than Newcastle’s wait of 438 minutes in the 2005-06 season.

It took only six minutes for Southampton to expose the extent of the challenge Hodgson must overcome.

Dusan Tadic beat Jeffrey Schlupp and, though his cross was palmed out by Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, Davis was on hand to tuck it in as the appointment of the former England manager in place of Frank de Boer paid no instant dividend.

England captain Eoin Morgan admits batting collapse was costly

Show/hide article…

England captain Eoin Morgan admitted his side lost the one-off Twenty20 against West Indies at Chester-le-Street because they failed to build on a good start.

Despite losing opener Jason Roy first ball England put on 63 runs for the second wicket before Alex Hales, who top scored for the home side with 43, was bowled by West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite.

Chasing the visitors’ 176 for nine England were all out for 155 with three balls remaining.

Morgan told Sky Sports Cricket: 'We didn’t bowl that well but we certainly didn’t lose the game (in the early overs of the West Indies innings) because we were certainly happy chasing what we did.

'The losing of the game was was probably when we lost three wickets (Hales, Joe Root, and Morgan) in that period.

‘Jos (Buttler) rebuilt really well and potentially put us in a position where we could have kicked on but we continued to lose wickets. I think that’s the area of the game that we need to look at.’

Morgan was dismissed for two and admitted his poor batting form was something he was looking at.

He said: ‘I think my form’s always a concern. It’s something I’m becoming more relaxed about as I get older.’

Brathwaite praised his players for sticking to their task as they looked despondent during the early overs of England’s reply when they were asked by the umpires if they wanted to carry on because rain had made the playing conditions difficult.

Brathwaite said: 'It was bad and I asked they guys ‘you know do you want to trudge on or do you want to call it a day?’

‘The players were in agreement. We said ‘do you know what, let’s give it a go’.’

‘We had a similar start (to England) and then we fell away. We knew we had to stick in it. The way we finished the game was really fantastic.’

West Indies openers Evin Lewis (51) and Chris Gayle (40) got their side off to a good start before Brathwaite and Kesrick Williams claimed three wickets apiece as England fell short of their target.

Van Dijk is ‘one of the best in the Premier League’ says Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Virgil Van Dijk seems back in Southampton’s good books after appearing for the first time in 237 days coming off the bench in their 1-0 away win over Crystal Palace.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino concedes he does not know what will happen in January but has welcomed the wantaway defender back into his squad.

Van Dijk had been left in limbo and was training on his own after attempting to force through a transfer to Liverpool, who were accused of tapping up the defender.

Despite the stand-off with Southampton, Van Dijk missed out on his summer move but was named in their squad for the trip to Selhurst Park on Saturday.

‘Around the player there is a lot of interest,’ Pellegrino said. 'You know how football is, it’s a big business. We have to accept that.

'Around him it is the same situation. Now we have to leave aside this situation. Now everything is normal.

'Now, for me I’ve got this group of players and I will try to push them, to work with them, to help them, to improve every single day.

'We never know how the market will be in January. We can bring in some players… every single squad can improve. We have got people who are working to improve our squad all the time.

'And for the other teams it’s the same. They will push to bring the best players and Virgil is one case. He’s one of the best players in the Premier League.

‘It’s normal that the biggest teams in the Premier League want to buy him.’

Van Dijk is set to start for Southampton’s Under 23 on Sunday against Stoke City in a bid to boost his match fitness.

Davis: That was more like us

Show/hide article…

The skipper scored the only goal in the sixth minute of a game Saints largely controlled from start to finish, with the exception of two point-blank saves from Fraser Forster.

The victory was the perfect response to the home defeat to Watford last time out – a performance Davis felt was not a true representation of the team.

“That was a lot more like us after the disappointment of last week,” he said.

“Everybody came away a little bit frustrated, angry and disappointed after the Watford game.

“It wasn’t a reflection of our true characteristics and we know we’re a lot better than that.

“It was important to come here, bounce back and show those qualities. I thought we did that with a real level of desire today.

“You need that, because there are such fine margins in the Premier League between winning and losing games.

“It was a really important win for us and we can look forward to next week’s game now.

“We want to gather a bit of momentum. That’s always important – if you can do that you’ll put yourself in a good position in the league.

“We won’t get carried away. We need to show that same desire and quality every week and make sure our levels don’t drop.”

Pellegrino talks of van Dijk’s future

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino admitted he was pleased to finally hand Virgil van Dijk a long awaited Saints comeback – but admitted he cannot guarantee what will happen when the transfer window reopens in January.

Van Dijk was introduced for the final few minutes of Saints’ 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and received a warm reception from the travelling fans.

The Dutch defender had not played for Saints since his season ending injury in January, and had sat out the start of this campaign due to his ongoing transfer saga.

Van Dijk handed in a transfer request but Saints refused to sell their star man, and are now focussed on getting him back into the team and on form.

However, there is little doubt that the interest in him will spark up again once the January window opens, and Saints boss Pellegrino was honest enough to admit there is no way of being sure how it will play out for his team or any other at this stage, and for now it is a case of trying to ensure van Dijk is focussed on his football.

“Hopefully yes, but now for me I have got this group of players and we try to push them, to help them, to work with them, to improve every single day,” he said.

“We never know how will be the market in January because we can bring some players because every single squad can improve.

“We have got people who are working to improve our squad all the time, and for the other teams it is the same. They will push to bring the best players.

“Virgil is one case because he is one of the best players in the Premier League and it is normal that the biggest teams in the Premier League want to sign him.”

With van Dijk having played a full game for the under-23s, trained with the first team and now having got a few more minutes under his belt, there is a decent chance he could start at home to Manchester United in Saints’ next fixture.

Van Dijk’s welcome back from the Saints fans was certainly one piece of good news, though there will be many more supporters at St Mary’s ready to have their say on Saturday.

“We have to accept that everybody can express on the pitch,” admitted Pellegrino.

“Around the player there is a lot of interest.

“You know how it works by now, it is a big business behind them.

“In the past we were a game, now we are a game but also a big business, and we have to accept that. Around him also in the same situation.

“Now we have to leave aside the situation and now everything is normal.”

New twist in ‘Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool’ saga

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino wanted to sell Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool over the summer.

That is according to The Times, who say Saints manager Pellegrino grew tired of Van Dijk’s attempts to quit St Mary’s.

Pellegrino ‘would have happily sold Van Dijk’ after the Dutchman handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move to Anfield.

But Southampton’s board were insistent the club stood its ground and rebuffed any offers for the centre-half.

Daniel Sturridge 's long-term Liverpool future is shrouded in doubt — with the Merseyside club still to open talks about a new contract.

Kop boss Jurgen Klopp is yet to be convinced that he can rely on the injury-prone England striker and the Reds are likely to wait until the end of the season before deciding whether to offer him an extended deal.

Sturridge has less than two years left on his current agreement – a stage when clubs are usually striving to tie down their top performers.

But the 28-year-old’s career has stalled since he signed a long-term deal with Liverpool in the autumn of 2014.

Liverpool new boy Naby Keita has dominated the headlines in Germany for all the wrong reasons following a Sadio Mane style challenge during RB Leipzig’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Keita, 22, will arrive for a club-record £48million next summer but will have to improve his discipline following a reckless challenge on Christoph Kramer.

The Monchengladbach midfielder was forced to leave the field as the club’s medical staff treated the injury.

Keita was shown a straight red card following a high boot to his face on 83 minutes and will now face a ban.
