Jurgen Klopp rejects transfer criticism after missing out on Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Maths may not exactly be his strong point, but Jurgen Klopp believes he has 500million reasons why he couldn’t improve Liverpool ’s defence in the summer.

The Reds boss admits that at times his side have been guilty of “bulls**t” mistakes which have cost them dearly so far this season.

But in response to the sniping critics who catch glimpses of foreign defenders and insist there surely were viable alternatives to Virgil van Dyke in the transfer window, Klopp insisted there simply weren’t any available who could improve his team.

Names like Davinson Sanchez, Kalidou Koulibaly and Benedikt Howedes were all cited as players equal to van Dijk, but asked if there were genuine alternatives who were overlooked in the pursuit of the Saints defender, he replied:

“No. We watched all of them 500million times, and to cool the people down what if the new player doesn’t hit the first ball and he makes exactly the same mistake?

“A mistake they all made in their life – but it is like, ‘he is a £65million signing, he will improve’. Why do you think the other one cannot improve? I don’t understand that.

“For me it’s really difficult always to come to your planet, visit you and say ‘yeah you’re right, there were five good options out there and we missed them because, I don’t know, we wanted to spend the money anywhere else’.

“It is not that we ignore it - I said if there would have been a solution out there we would have done it. I had to make a decision and the decision was our boys are not worse than them.

“It is concentration. It is not a quality thing. But if there’s no-one, no solution out there, and no real quality issue then you have to work on it and that is what we will do.”

Klopp knows that the received wisdom on his side means that every single mistake will now be placed firmly in the ‘can’t defend’ category, leaving him admitting: “It looks to me a little bit like a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Yet as he prepares for the visit of Burnley, and a potentially frustrating afternoon of suffocating defensive blocks, the German coach passionately countered the argument that he is too trusting of gaffe-prone players.

“People say that? I believe in trust. I trust people until they give me an opportunity or a possibility not to trust them anymore. That’s how I understand life,” he explained.

“My job is really to make the best out of this season and it’s easy for me in a lot of moments to believe in this team – it’s easy.

“Oh yeah, sometimes they make bulls**t, and we are not happy. Sometimes [there are] goals I’m angry about, and it’s not the first one. Of course you wish we could have done differently, but that can happen. That’s really life.

“Really, with all this about (our defenders) go out there and ask other teams whether they’d like to pick them. You would be really surprised.

“Let’s say when I came here we started new and now we have this team. When I came in we were ninth and now, ‘ooofff.’ We are really on a good way.

“Sometimes we make mistakes because we are offensively that strong.”

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp defends back line, transfer strategy

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp has defended Liverpool’s under-fire centre-backs, and revealed the club had “no solution” after missing out on signing Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool’s defence was criticised for its performance in the Reds’ embarrassing 5-0 loss to Manchester City last weekend, and subsequent 2-2 Champions League draw with Sevilla midweek.

The Anfield club failed in their bid to sign Saints stalwart Van Dijk due to a tapping-up incident that ended with the club issuing a public apology for their transgression.

But Klopp on Friday told multiple outlets the club, despite not bringing in a new centre-back in his place, did not err in sticking with the players they already had at the position.

“With all the history before I came in and since I’ve been here with how people talk about these players, you really should try one time to go out there and ask other clubs what they think about these defenders and whether they would like to pick them. You would be really surprised,” Klopp said.

Asked why the club didn’t pursue a Plan B, Klopp added: "I said if there would have been a solution out there we would have done it. There was no solution.

“I cannot speak in this country about any players I tried to get. Give me other centre-halves?”

Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Colombia international Davinson Sanchez, who eventually moved to Tottenham this summer, were, among others, considered options to bolster Liverpool’s back line during the window.

Klopp said: "No. We watched all of them 500 million times.

"Just to cool the people down, what if the new player doesn’t hit the first ball [like Dejan Lovren against Sevilla] and he makes exactly the same mistake? A mistake they all made in their life – but it is like ‘He is a £65 million signing, he will improve.’

"Why do you think the other one cannot improve? I don’t understand that. We want to make the right decisions. A big part of football and life is really putting faith in the people you work with – trust them – because they all can improve.

"They all can. They are all good out there but they are not that good that you say ‘yes they could help immediately.’ I had to make a decision and the decision was our boys are not worse than them.

“What I see from all the questions, you start too early coming back to these things. For me it’s really difficult always to come completely on your planet, visit you and say ‘Yeah you’re right, there were five good options out there and we missed them because, I don’t know, we wanted to spend the money anywhere else.’”

When quizzed if he was too trusting of his players, Klopp said: "People say that? That’s the risk when you get a manager, so we are like we are.

"I believe in trust. I trust people until they give me an opportunity or a possibility not to trust them anymore. That’s how I understand life.

“My job is really to get the best out of these boys, not to sign them and tell them ‘Deliver, come on.’ That’s a clear deal. You perform really well boys, credit. We perform bad, my credit. It’s my job to make sure we can perform as good as possible.”

Lovren came in for heavy criticism after the match against Sevilla on Wednesday, when his error opened the door for Wissam Ben Yedder’s fifth-minute opener.

Klopp said the Croatia international is being unfairly singled out.

“At the time I thought it had gone through his legs but then I watched it back. Things like this happen and it’s all about reacting to it,” he said.

"I’d give them all the advice: don’t read anything. But with the world of social media that’s quite difficult for the boys. They all know what people think and say in this moment.

“Two people say you’re good and you think ‘okay,’ five people say you are bad and it feels like a stitch or whatever. Dejan is not 18 any more. He’s a man, he’s a father of two kids. He can deal with it. I’ve seen much bigger mistakes in my life.”

Pellegrino urges Hojbjerg and co to keep fighting

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino has urged the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg not to give up and keep fighting for their place in his Saints team.

The Danish midfielder has been excluded from the squad in every game so far this season, and is absent today at Crystal Palace because he has returned to his homeland to celebrate the birth of his first child.

But Pellegrino wants the 22-year-old and others not playing regularly to keep working hard because their big chance could be just round the corner.

“In the beginning of the Premier League Pierre was outside of the team because we have got a lot of players there,” he said.

"But Pierre is a player that is always ready and you never know in professional football when your opportunity will arise and in this moment you have to be ready.

"But not just in the case of Pierre, there are a lot of players out there waiting because we have 23,24,25 players.

"We can use only 11 every week, but in the top level the good thing is when you get an opportunity in ten minutes you can change your future, your life.

“Pierre is still young and he’s a player who I think will be important in the squad.”

The Argentine, who experienced similar times during his playing days when he was on the fringes of the team, knows that it’s hard for these players.

“Yes, it’s difficult for them," he said. "It’s difficult for everybody but we have to understand and respect the players who are playing.

"We have to also respect the players who are not playing and have to support them because as a manager the player number 27 I know in some moment he will be important.

"In one year a lot of things can change. The life of the player, the life of the team are changing all the time.

“But you never know when your moment will arrive.”

The message from the boss is to be patient.

“When I was a player I was fighting a lot to feel that I’m important in the team. I will tell them ‘you have to fight, you have to prepare’,” he said.

"Every week you have to show your quality and the bad thing is if you played well in the last game you have to go again, try to play well, because if not others can be in your place.

“This is most difficult thing.”

Author and lifelong Saints fan dies

Show/hide article…

TRIBUTES have been paid to a local author and Saints fan who received a surprise visit from Lawrie McMenemy shortly before he died.

Jim Marsh, 76, was at the Countess Mountbatten Hospice in West End when he suddenly came face to face with the most successful manager in the club’s history.

He was delighted to be presented with a signed photograph of Lawrie, who led Saints to FA Cup glory in 1976.

Mr Marsh’s sister, Susan Willis, of Southampton, said: “We’re so grateful to him for taking the time to do what he did. Seeing his hero was the most magical experience for Jim.

“He didn’t know anything about it beforehand.

“A doctor walked in and said ‘I’ve got a surprise visitor for you’ – standing behind him was Lawrie McMenemy.

Lawrie, one of the hospice’s ambassadors, also spoke to several other patients during a two-hour visit to the facility.

Mr Marsh was born in Southampton and educated at Portswood Secondary Modern. He worked on the railways, spent time in the Merchant Navy and was also employed at the Southampton branch of W H Smith.

After becoming an author he wrote a series of books about the history of his home city.

They included Not a Guide to Southampton, which was published in 2013 and included a foreword by ex-city council leader Royston Smith, now Tory MP for Southampton Itchen, and Growing Up in Wartime Southampton: Someone Else’s Trousers

He wrote: “This book is all you remember of Southampton, all you will come to remember in the future, and everything in between.

“It has made me think of what it means to have been born here, and for me it is a mix of so many things from past and present which make me proud to be local.”

After setting up his own company, Aloejimmy Publishing, he branched out into fiction and wrote about the adventures of a mischievous goldfish called Jayden, who was named after his own grandson.

Mr Marsh, a widower who lived at Belgrave Road in Southampton, had lung cancer.

His condition deteriorated about three months ago and he was admitted to the hospice but died in a nursing home. He leaves a son, also called James.

Klopp: We watched Van Dijk alternatives 500m times… but decided not to sign anyone

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp insists there were no better defenders out there this summer

The Kop were heavily linked with the Southampton defender this summer.

He handed in a transfer request to try and force through a move to the Kop but the Saints stood firm.

Many have questioned Klopp’s decision not to try harder or bring in someone else.

But the German boss insists his scouting team did their work and they decided no one out there could improve his defence.
