Virgil Van Dijk: Liverpool were desperate to sign star, Saints should have sold - Kamara

Show/hide article…

That’s the verdict of player-turned-pundit Chris Kamara, who can’t understand Saints’ decision to keep hold of the wantaway star.

Liverpool lined up Van Dijk as the man to bolster their defence towards the end of last season following his impressive stint at St. Mary’s.

But Southampton refused to do business with the Reds after accusing them of tapping the 26-year-old up in June.

Kamara revealed he was baffled that Van Dijk wasn’t allowed to move during an appearance on Thursday night’s edition of Sky Sports show The Debate.

Key names, team news and good omens for Saints: everything you need to know about Saturday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace…

THE MATCH

Crystal Palace vs. Southampton

Saturday 16 September, 12.30 BST

Selhurst Park

Premier League Gameweek 5

TEAM NEWS

Hosts Crystal Palace are without long-term absentees Pape Souare, Wilfried Zaha, Bakary Sako and Connor Wickham but new boss Roy Hodgson will hope to welcome James Tomkins and summer signing Ruben Loftus-Cheek back into the fold in time.

There are no new injury concerns for Mauricio Pellegrino meanwhile, who has an almost full squad at his disposal for the trip to Selhurst Park. Midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has returned to his native Denmark for the birth of his child while Virgil van Dijk’s condition will be assessed.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints suffered their first league defeat of the campaign against Watford last weekend but will fancy their chances of serving up a positive response when they head up to south London on Saturday afternoon to face the Eagles.

Four consecutive defeats without finding the net spelled the end of Frank de Boer’s 77-day tenure at Selhurst Park with Roy Hodgson the man entrusted with the task of registering Palace’s first Premier League points this term.

A win and a clean sheet for Pellegrino’s charges in the lunchtime kick-off would see Palace become the first team in top-flight history to lose all five of their opening fixtures without scoring a goal.

FORM GUIDE

Crystal Palace’s previous five:

Burnley 1-0 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace 0-2 Swansea

Crystal Palace 2-1 Ipswich (Carabao Cup)

Liverpool 1-0 Crystal Palace

Huddersfield 3-0 Crystal Palace

Southampton’s previous five:

Southampton 0-2 Watford

Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton

Southampton 0-2 Wolves (Carabao Cup)

Southampton 3-2 West Ham

Southampton 0-0 Swansea

ONE TO WATCH

Christian Benteke has scored five goals in as many Premier League appearances against Southampton, including three in his last two for his current employers. After swapping Liverpool for south London in the summer of 2016, the target man topped the Eagles’ scoring charts with 17 strikes in all competitions last season.

With his side yet to find the net so far this season, the Belgian international will be keen to remedy a slow start to the season by getting off the mark at Selhurst Park this weekend.

Liverpool owner John W Henry gets heckled at Boston Red Sox game

Show/hide article…

Even 5,000 miles away, and in a stadium devoted to an entirely different sport, Liverpool owner John W Henry can’t get away from talk about Virgil van Dijk.

Henry, the majority shareholder of the Fenway Sports Group which owns both the Anfield club and the Boston Red Sox, found himself picked out by a fan at a recent Major League Baseball game.

The supporter was caught on video repeatedly urging Henry to sign Van Dijk - the Southampton defender who was heavily linked with a move to Merseyside during the summer.

A 19-second video of the heckling has been posted on social media, showing Henry looking somewhat uncomfortable.

‘Sign Virgil van Dijk in January,’ the fan shouts. 'It’s the right thing to do.

‘Van Dijk in January. It’s the right thing to do. He wants to play for us.’

Throughout the exchange, Henry stands arms-crossed and briefly appears to look in the direction of the supporter without acknowledging his remarks.

The Van Dijk saga rumbled on throughout the summer, with the Dutchman at one point handing in a transfer request in an effort to leave Southampton.

In the end, however, he remained on the south coast - much to the frustration of Liverpool fans who were keen for reinforcements to their side’s fragile defensive line.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Van Dijk alone would not be the answer to his team’s struggles at the back.

He said: 'If these problems could be solved by one player you can imagine we would have put all our money into it and say: ‘Let’s do this’.

'It is about being dominant and losing a bit of a grip on the game in all the defensive moments.

'There is space for improvement. We need to learn to be dominant and not give easy goals.

‘It is not a general defending problem but we have to improve 100 per cent.’

Virgil van Dijk: Southampton defender will NOT captain club on first-team return

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk may return this weekend but not as captain for Southampton

The Dutchman has not featured for the club since early 2017 but is back to full fitness and has recently returned to training.

Van Dijk had went on strike at the South Coast outfit after attempting to push through a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

However, with Southampton refusing to sell him, van Dijk is now trying to get back into the first-team fold.

But new manager Mauricio Pellegrino has said the former captain will not be receiving the armband upon his return to action.

Chelseal vs Arsenal: Best Odds and Predictions plus Man Utd vs Everton

Show/hide article…

From the boos to the Blues, this week looks as if it’s only going to get worse for Arsenal.

Struggling against a team with no points and just one goal after three Bundesliga games wasn’t in their Europa League script and certainly wasn’t the way to warm up for a London derby at Chelsea this Sunday.

The Arsenal fans who gave their team pelters at half-time against Cologne before they turned it around on Thursday night are unlikely to hold too much hope for the trip across the capital where the 5/6 available for a home win (the Gunners are just under 4/1) looks like an opportunity to buy money.

Since Arsenal won 5-3 at the Bridge in 2011, Chelsea have taken all 15 points from their five meetings there, scoring 15 goals in the process and letting in just two.

They’ve scored in 23 straight home games in the league and since losing to Burnley on the opening weekend have won four on the spin, the most recent a 6-0 hammering of Azerbaijani side Qarabag 48 hours before Arsenal’s own European bow for the season.

Arsene Wenger’s recent record against the title-chasers hasn’t done him any favours – you have to go back to January 2015 for the last time he won against a team who finished in the top six last season. It was Man City, who crushed Liverpool 5-0 after the Reds thumped Arsenal 4-0, so, big teams, big scores, it’s happened twice this season and we’re only four games in. Chelsea to win by three goals or more is 9/2 (Sky Bet and Winner), two or more is 8/5 while over 3.5 total goals in the game is 8/5 with a few bookies.

Chelsea had five different scorers on Tuesday night (there was an own goal too) and were able to leave Alvaro Morata on the bench but he’ll be back looking to add to his tally of three goals – all of which have been scored with his head. He’s 7/2 (Bet365) for the opener, evens (several firms) at any time while Betway are offering 7/4 his next Premier League goal is another header while it’s 2/5 he uses his feet. Fit-again Eden Hazard is 7/4 at any time with Paddy Power, Betfred and Betway.

Like Chelsea, Manchester United impressed as they kicked off their European adventure and like Arsenal (before the break anyway), Everton didn’t.

Wayne Rooney returns to Old Trafford with the Toffees in Sunday’s other game but United, with Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini also also facing former employers, look like the biggest home banker on the coupon and 1/3 is about as good as it gets.

Lukaku is 3/1 for the first goal and 10/11 at any time while Fellaini, who could get a run in the absence of injured Paul Pogba and who has two goals this season (he only managed four in the entire 2016-17 campaign) is 7/2 with Paddy Power just to score.

The first-ever top-flight meeting between Bournemouth and Brighton kicks things off on Friday night before Roy Hodgson takes charge of Crystal Palace for the first time when they host Southampton at lunchtime on Saturday.

A fourth defeat in as many Premier League games signalled the end of Frank de Boer but even if the Dutchman had kept his job it would’ve been worth backing Palace this weekend.

There were positive signs in the 1-0 loss at Burnley last week as they bossed possession and had 24 shots – we know not many of them were on target, but it’s a start as they search for their first goals of the campaign.

Southampton haven’t been much better than the Eagles up top, drawing a blank in three of their four matches and, going back further, they’ve only scored in three of their last 12.

Add this to the new-boss bounce at Selhurst Park and the 21/10 available for a home win is worth taking.

In the 3pm games, Manchester City look unstoppable heading to Watford having hit five against Liverpool and four at Feyenoord and are worth backing to see off a team who have been much better on the road than at home.

Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus both scored in last weekend’s rout and in Holland. You can get 15/8 (Sky Bet) they are both on target again.

Liverpool will be glad they’re not facing Jesus and Aguero again until 2018. Saturday’s opponents Burnley have scored five goals this season - the same amount as the City pair - but they’ve also held Tottenham to a draw and won at Chelsea so Jurgen Klopp will be taking nothing for granted.

A home win is 3/10 but a hammering is unlikely and Liverpool by one goal is 3/1 while a home win by a two-goal margin is the same price (Sky Bet).

Leicester’s season so far has seen them fall short against the top teams (Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea) and pick up results against weaker opposition (Brighton in the league and Sheffield United in the Cup). Huddersfield, despite a solid start, fall into the second category and the visiting Foxes are no better than 11/8 - or 4/1 for the win with both teams scoring.

Newcastle against Stoke has the look of a draw while West Brom at home to West Ham could end all square.

Tottenham fans should be in for a tea-time treat on Saturday with Swansea the visitors to Wembley.

Borussia Dortmund were dumped on Wednesday night proving Spurs can win at their temporary home and Harry Kane followed up last week’s double at Everton with another two against the Germans.

Spurs are 1/4 shots (Swansea are 16/1) but we like the look of Betway’s special on Kane. Much has been made of him never scoring a league goal in August but, as expected, he’s started September with a bang and is 7/2 to net in every Premier League game this month. After Swansea, it’s West Ham and Huddersfield (both away) so as long as he stays clear of injury you’d fancy him to grab at least a couple. He’s 11/5 (Betfair) for two or more on Saturday night.

Pellegrino focused on continual improvement

Show/hide article…

Saints were beaten by Watford in last weekend’s league action, but Pellegrino has called upon his side to learn quickly from the defeat in order to improve results.

Saints embark on just their second away trip of the Premier League calendar, with Palace yet to register a point in the new campaign.

“The players are intelligent and they know what we need to compete at this level. I see every game as an opportunity to improve,” Pellegrino began.

“Sometimes there might be a defeat that is positive, hopefully last week can be one of these. We’ve got another tough game to try to show our way because the construction of the team is a process.

“We are working on the base of the team. We have a group of players who are open-minded to realise what we need to be on top.”

Despite the news that former England boss Roy Hodgson will succeed Frank de Boer as Crystal Palace manager this week, Pellegrino has maintained concentration on his side’s all important preparation.

“We have to think about us, about our side, our model, how we will attack and how we will defend,” he added.

“The people they possess in the final third are dangerous players and they can change the game in one action. But we also have important players.

“In the Premier League, in one second you can win and lose the game. We have to be prepared to do the minimum, to increase our baseline every single week.”

Opposition View: Crystal Palace

Show/hide article…

The 70-year-old is readying himself for his first game back in management since England’s shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016.

After hosting the Saints at Selhurst Park tomorrow, Palace’s next three league games will see them face Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

“There’s no doubt in the players’ minds about the importance of this game, and how much it would be a good one to win,” he said.

“It’s up to the 11 who are selected to show that on the field of play.”

Hodgson is set to be without key man Wilfried Zaha, sidelined since the opening day of the season, but confirmed James Tomkins and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are available again after injury.

Long-term casualties Mamadou Sakho and Pape Souare came through an under-23 game unscathed on Monday, and could return to the first-team squad.

But Hodgson hinted he won’t make wholesale changes after Palace played well in defeat at Burnley last time out.

“To some extent in this early period, I have stuck with what I’ve already seen and can analyse,” he added.

"I was heartened by what I saw on the TV in the Burnley game last weekend.

“I saw a team which I thought dominated the game and defended well, so the least I can hope for is that we can reproduce that form tomorrow.”

Crystal Palace v Southampton preview: Roy Hodgson starts life at Selhurst

Show/hide article…

Roy Hodgson starts life as the new Crystal Palace boss with a home clash against Southampton, live on Sky Sports Premier League on Saturday.

Hodgson replaced Frank de Boer on Tuesday after the Dutchman was dismissed just four games into his tenure.

The former England boss becomes the oldest manager to be appointed at a Premier League club (70 years and 34 days) and will need to use all of that experience to turn around Palace’s horrendous start to the campaign.

De Boer was sacked having lost all four games in charge without his team scoring. If they fail to score before 78th minute on Saturday they will beat the Premier League record for longest time taken to score a team’s first league goal of the season (currently 438 mins by Newcastle, Aug-Sept 2005).

Southampton have problems in front of goal, too. They’ve scored just five goals in last 10 games and have failed to score in eight of those.

They could be boosted by the return of Virgil van Dijk, who hasn’t played since January due to an ankle injury and has not been selected so far this campaign after handing in a transfer request during the summer.

Southampton have a much better PL win percentage (43.6%) with Van Dijk in the team since he joined the club than without (28.6%).

Hodgson will have Ruben Loftus-Cheek and James Tomkins available for his first match as Crystal Palace manager.

Each missed Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Burnley, under the sacked De Boer, but have recovered their fitness.

Mamadou Sakho and Pape Souare remain short of match fitness, so are likely to miss out, while Wilfried Zaha is continuing his rehabilitation following a knee injury.

Van Dijk could return to Southampton’s squad for the first time in eight months.

The Holland international will be given a late fitness test.

Denmark international midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is Saints’ only absentee ahead of the trip to Selhurst Park as he has returned to his homeland due to the birth of his daughter.

Crystal Palace have won just two of their 16 Premier League matches against Southampton, (D4 L10), although both victories have come in the last four meetings (both at Selhurst Park).

Southampton have lost their last two Premier League trips to Selhurst Park to face the Eagles, this after avoiding defeat in their first six there (W3 D3).

Saints have won three of their last four meetings with Crystal Palace in all competitions, losing the other. Indeed, there hasn’t been a draw between the sides in any of the last 16 clashes (6 wins for Palace, 10 wins for Southampton).

Crystal Palace’s xG (expected goals) figure in the Premier League this season is 4.73 - suggesting that an average team would have scored five goals from the chances they’ve had. This xG tally is higher than Chelsea’s (4.08), who have scored eight goals.

The Premier League record for longest time taken by a team to score a goal in a season is 438 minutes, held by Newcastle United in 2005-06. If Crystal Palace don’t score before the 78th minute in this match, they’ll break this record.

Southampton have failed to score in nine of their last 12 Premier League matches, including three of their four games so far in 2017-18.

Palace have to win this otherwise they are near-on relegated. I say that because of the three games they have after this one [Manchester City away, Manchester United away, Chelsea at home]. If they lose this then they could go eight games without a point. You can’t stay up with that.

I don’t think Hodgson will make too much of a difference. They were unlucky against Burnley last weekend and if you leave De Boer for this game and win then before you know it things might not be that bad. But then you have three difficult games and Hodgson hasn’t worked in the Premier League for five years.

Southampton are a funny team and I think their manager is under a bit of pressure too. Palace need to win this game but I don’t think they will.

Southampton are Sky Bet’s 6/4 favourites for the victory with Crystal Palace 19/10 to make a winning start under Roy Hodgson, while the draw is priced at 11/5. The Eagles’ nightmare start has seen them cut to 6/5 favourites for relegation, while the Saints remain 25/1 outsiders for the drop despite their continued troubles in front of goal.

Christian Benteke and Manolo Gabbiadini share favouritism in the first goalscorer betting at 4/1 apiece and are 11/2 to both find the net.
