Why Conte expects Chelsea to ‘suffer’ vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte expects Chelsea to “suffer” against Southampton on Saturday because of the manner of the Saints’ loss to Leicester in midweek.

Mauricio Pellegrino launched a scathing attack on his Southampton players in the aftermath of the club’s 4-1 loss to Leicester at St Mary’s in midweek, saying his team lacked the necessary concentration and commitment to avoid the heavy defeat.

The Saints did recently draw 1-1 against Arsenal and came to within seconds of securing a similar draw with leaders Manchester City, but saw a 96th-minute Raheem Sterling goal condemn them to a 2-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium.

Southampton, who currently sit just four points above the relegation zone in 11th place in the Premier League standings, will now take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

And Conte is wary of the threat Southampton will pose his side this weekend if the Saints show a reaction to their loss to Leicester.

Conte told reporters on Friday: "I can tell you that, for sure, tomorrow the game will be very difficult for us. Because, for me, Southampton are a really good team.

"They have a lot of good players, young players but good players with great futures. I would prefer that Southampton had won the game against Leicester instead of losing in this way, 4-1 at home.

"I heard the interview post-game from the coach, from Pellegrino, and we must pay great attention. This team are very strong. They’re a good team. The players are very fast. They can play very well on the counter-attack: Austin, Redmond… Tadic. They have a lot of good players. Long, Bouffal… We must pay great attention.

“Tomorrow, my expectation is to suffer. I have this sensation. We must pay great attention tomorrow.”

"If you pay attention, this season we dropped points against West Ham, and West Ham were at the bottom of the table when we played them. We dropped points against Crystal Palace and, if you remember, Crystal Palace were at the bottom of the table.

“We must pay great attention every game. Every game is very difficult. For sure, to find Southampton in this position, I’m a bit surprised.”

He added: "Tomorrow it won’t be easy to win the game, as Manchester City know very well. They played two games ago and found a solution only in the 96th minute.

“After the team has had a bad defeat at home, as they did against Leicester… there is great attention of your opponent, of the coach, of the club, because they don’t want to extend a bad run and they want to give a great answer against a team like Chelsea.”

The hosts sit third in the Premier League, while Mauricio Pellegrino’s men will look to respond to their defeat to Leicester City in midweek.

And the former Italy boss has warned his side that they will have be meticulous in their planning to come out on top.

“For sure, tomorrow the game will be very difficult for us because Southampton are a really good team, they have young players with a great future,” Conte began.

“I would prefer Southampton to have won their game against Leicester than lose in that way at home. I heard the post-match interview from Pellegrino and we must pay great attention.

“They are very fast and play well on the counter attack with (Charlie) Austin, (Nathan) Redmond and (Dusan) Tadic. They have a lot of good players, (Shane) Long and (Sofiane) Boufal as well.

“My expectation is for us to suffer, I have this sensation, so we must pay great attention. When you play after a bad defeat, especially at home, there is great attention of the coach and the club because they don’t want to continue a bad run. They want to give a good answer against a strong team like Chelsea.”

Chelsea’s Morata back for Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has recovered from a back problem and is in contention for Saturday’s Premier League game against Southampton, manager Antonio Conte said on Friday.

Spain international Morata has made 15 league appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring nine goals but missed the 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Tuesday.

Morata has returned to training and Conte expects his first-choice striker to shake off the lingering back pain to be ready for Saturday’s clash against 11th-placed Southampton.

“He trained with us two days ago and today. He has this pain in his back but he is in contention for tomorrow’s game,” Conte told a news conference on Friday.

Morata has hit the ground running since moving to London from Real Madrid in the close season and has been viewing videos of former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba in an effort to make a bigger impact.

“I think he (Drogba) is more powerful but don’t forget Alvaro has a lot of space for improvement. He is strong physically, he is a technical player and I see a great future for him.”

Conte said defender David Luiz’s knee injury is “serious” and added that the player would be assessed on a day-to-day basis with no definite timeline for a return to action.

Luiz was dropped for Chelsea’s league matches against Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool before suffering the injury that has kept him out of the last four league games.

“David has a big inflammation in his knee and we are trying to solve the situation with the doctor. It is important to assess the situation day by day and solve this problem. I don’t know when he is able to come back,” Conte said.

“The player is working apart (from the team). In the last few days he was out to work in the pool. Today I saw him on the pitch to try to run a bit but very slow.”

The 19 players with the best minutes per goal ratio in the Premier League this season

Show/hide article…

There has been no shortage of goals in the Premier League this season with nets bulging 444 times already.

Manchester City have, unsurprisingly, been the division’s biggest contributor to that total, bagging 52.

Forwards across English football’s top-flight have enjoyed stellar campaigns in front of goal as they bid to help their respective clubs achieve their targets.

But which forward has proven to be the most clinical when it comes to minutes on the pitch?

Click the right arrow, above, to see which forward has the best minutes per goal ratio in the Premier League this season.

Inside Track: Chelsea

Show/hide article…

How would you sum up Chelsea’s season so far?

You would have to regard the season up until now as inconsistent. The last seven days have, in many ways, epitomised Chelsea’s unpredictability. It is uncertain which Chelsea team will turn up on the day. The performance against West Ham lacked any desire, and they didn’t compete against a highly motivated David Moyes side. But conversely, against Huddersfield they were very impressive and in control throughout.

Who will be Chelsea’s key men on Saturday afternoon?

Undoubtedly Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata - fully fit, Hazard is unstoppable. He has been phenomenal since his return from injury and has only failed to make an impact against West Ham of late. Morata has also made a good start to life in the Premier League, and the two forwards have a good partnership and understanding in the final third. N’golo Kante is still a standout performer and Cesc Fabregas is intelligent with his passing from deep.

How have Chelsea’s new signings settled in at Stamford Bridge?

Morata has made an obvious immediate impact. Tiémoué Bakayoko has rather underwhelmed - broadly, his performances have been below par for the price paid in the summer. Davide Zappacosta has been okay and Antonio Rüdiger looks reasonable, although hasn’t played much. Danny Drinkwater’s game time has been curtailed because of injury.

How do Chelsea fit in to this season’s title race?

With Man City out in the distance, it is hard to see anyone catching them. Perhaps Chelsea more appropriately fit in to the race for a Champions League spot, which is vital for attracting new signings and to minimise the damage in terms of a largely disappointing title defence. Chelsea still look strong enough to finish in the top four.

Has the win over Huddersfield lifted the mood in camp?

It was an excellent display against a dogged side, who had recently beaten Manchester United. This will ideally spark a winning run of games, to cement a top four position. There is also the League Cup quarter-final to look ahead to next week and they will be keen to deliver a positive display to take in to that tie against Bournemouth.
