Man United academy leads the way again in the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Manchester United’s academy made the single biggest contribution to last season’s Premier League of any youth set-up, a Press Association Sport study has found.

Their graduates racked up more than twice as many top-flight minutes played as the next best academy.

Players who finished their youth careers in the United academy were on the field for a total of 44,055 minutes in the study. Tottenham were second, with a total of 19,995.

The Red Devils’ reputation for developing home-grown talent extends back to the ‘Busby Babes’ of the 1950s and continued through the 'Class of ‘92’ group which played a part in the United side that dominated domestic football in the 1990s and won the treble in 1999.

Our study shows that the United academy is still the No 1 producer of top-flight talent in England.

In their own line-up, France midfielder Paul Pogba - who rejoined United last summer in an £89million deal - racked up 2,609 minutes while England internationals Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard played 1,702 and 1,367 minutes respectively.

Other non-United players to make significant contributions to the Red Devils academy total included Burnley duo Michael Keane and Tom Heaton, who each played 3,150 minutes. England defender Keane has since joined Everton.

Bournemouth striker Joshua King played 2,721 minutes, while Leicester pair Danny Simpson (2,990) and Danny Drinkwater (2,466) were also key to the high total for United.

Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross played 3,150 minutes while relegated Sunderland used five United academy products during the season - John O’Shea, Donald Love, Paddy McNair, Darron Gibson and Adnan Januzaj. West Brom duo Jonny Evans (2,638) and Darren Fletcher (3,235) also came through the United system.

The biggest contributor to Tottenham’s total who still plays for the club was Harry Kane, with 2,536 minutes played in a season disrupted by injury.

Spurs graduates Charlie Daniels and Adam Smith each played over 3,000 minutes for Bournemouth, and Andros Townsend played 2,528 minutes for Crystal Palace.

Manchester City graduates managed 16,226 minutes to place the club third, but almost all of those were played by players who have moved on from the Etihad Stadium.

Kelechi Iheanacho (526 minutes) was the only City youth product to feature in their first team in the Premier League under Pep Guardiola all season.

City graduate Ben Mee at Burnley played 3,016 minutes while Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel featured for 2,667 minutes.

Adam Clayton at Middlesbrough, another City youth player, played 2,806 minutes and Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan played 2,278.

Southampton finished fourth in the study, with 14,340 minutes, while West Ham were fifth on 13,907.

Of last season’s European qualifiers from the Premier League, Liverpool are the only one not to feature in the top 10, ranking 17th in the study with 8,753 minutes.

League One champions Sheffield United made a surprise appearance in the top 10, finishing eighth on 13,564 minutes - one place and 119 minutes ahead of Chelsea.

Full backs Kyle Walker (2,704 minutes) and Kyle Naughton (2,718) featured extensively for Tottenham and Swansea respectively, with Harry Maguire playing 2,306 minutes for Hull and fellow centre back Phil Jagielka 2,250 for Everton.

The only club from outside England to feature in the top 10 were Dutch side Ajax, who were 10th.

Graduates from Barcelona’s La Masia finishing school made the 12th-biggest contribution, while the largest representation from outside Europe came from the youth set-up at Argentinian giants River Plate.

At the other end of the scale, relegated Hull produced the fewest minutes of any Premier League team - just 501, shared between their own players Josh Tymon (325) and Jarrod Bowen (176).

The Tigers were the only club not to have a graduate feature for any other top-flight team and their youth products also lagged over 1,000 total minutes behind those of Watford, the second-lowest ranked Premier League club in the study with 1,513 minutes.

Almost exactly half of the Hornets’ total came from Manchester United winger Ashley Young (757 minutes), with the rest from their own players led by Adrian Mariappa (561).

Manchester United academy products played most minutes in 2016/17 Premier League season

Show/hide article…

Manchester United academy products played more than twice as many Premier League minutes than any other side in last season’s Premier League, according to a Press Association Sport study.

Footballers graduating from United’s academy played total of 44,055 minutes during the 2016/17 Premier League season. Players coming through Tottenham’s youth setup were second, racking up a total of 19,995 Premier League minutes.

There were 34 players who emerged from United’s youth ranks and featured in the Premier League last season, including Red Devils regulars Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, as well as West Brom captain Darren Fletcher, Burnley pair Tom Heaton and Michael Keane and Leicester duo Danny Drinkwater and Danny Simpson.

The club’s reputation for developing home-grown talent extends back to the Busby Babes of the 1950s and continued through the Class of 92 group who played a part in United’s domination of domestic football during the 1990s, culminating in the treble in 1999.

United’s all-time record appearance holder Ryan Giggs credits former boss Sir Alex Ferguson with laying the foundations for the club’s academy graduates to prosper in the Premier League.

“I think you have to go back to when Sir Alex first joined the club and overhauled the whole youth system,” said Giggs, who was speaking at an event to promote the People’s Award for the 2017 McDonald’s Community Awards.

"He made sure there was a pathway for young, local players to get into the first team. From then on the youth system and that pathway to the first team has just got stronger and stronger, so when parents are picking a team for their son to go to and they want them to get to the first team, they pick United because you’ve seen over the years Man United give young players a chance.

“Then there is the coaching, the way they are looked after, the way first-team players look after the young players coming into the team. There’s a number of reasons, but I think you have to go back 30 years ago to when it all started.”

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Reds must do everything to sign defender - Graeme Souness

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is still wanted by Liverpool this summer

The Reds have been linked with the Southampton defender but have backed off after being accused of tapping up the 25-year-old.

Liverpool are looking to bolster their backline as they prepare for a return to the Champions League.

Souness would have liked to have seen more signings come through the door at Anfield already this summer.

“I would have liked to have seen a bit more action. I think Liverpool are still a bit off challenging for the title,” he told talkSPORT.

“With the demands of the Champions League next year, if two or three players get knocks and aren’t playing all the time that could badly damage them.

Man City ready to end interest in Southampton left back Ryan Bertrand

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are prepared to turn away from a deal for Southampton left back Ryan Bertrand.

Pep Guardiola is overhauling his back four this summer and wanted to sign as many as four full backs after allowing Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy to leave.

But City are wary of the financials involved in landing Bertrand and believe the versatility of Danilo, who they hope to lure away from Real Madrid, means a second left back is not a necessity.

Right back Danilo, who will cost £26.5million if a deal goes through in the coming days, can operate on the left and as a holding midfielder.

Monaco left back Benjamin Mendy remains their top target in that position and will cost north of £40m. City are still haggling with the French club over the fee.

City’s spending is set to stretch beyond £250m this summer and Guardiola has asked sporting director Txiki Begiristain for another ‘three or four’ signings before the end of August.

‘We need that to refresh the players and rebuild a little bit more of the club,’ Guardiola said.

Meanwhile, City rejected the chance to sign Pepe Reina from Napoli, with Claudio Bravo acting as Ederson’s deputy this year.

Richard Scudamore speaks on Premier League games abroad

Show/hide article…

A ‘burning desire’ to play a round of Premier League matches abroad still exists – but do not expect it to happen any time soon.

That is the view of chairman Richard Scudamore, who also revealed that the top flight’s clubs are keen to take matches out of the country.

The controversial idea was mooted in 2014 but dropped after a fierce backlash from fans, while the prospect of taking a 39th match overseas was abandoned in 2008 for similar reasons.

Speaking at the Premier League’s Asia Trophy, Scudamore was open about the issue.

‘I’ve got the scars all the way up my back (from the last time),’ he said. ‘Look, I may be at the Premier League for five, 10, 15 or 20 years. There is no plan to do it.

'Is there still a burning desire? The clubs would like to do it but we are also realistic that says until the fan, political and media reaction is any more warm towards it, it won’t happen.’

Despite those scars, Scudamore retains his belief that the idea is a good one as the league seeks further ways of capitalising on the huge interest abroad.

‘If it did happen it wouldn’t be a 39th game,’ he said. ‘I think there would be a desire to do a round of fixtures internationally but there is no prospect of it happening any time soon or in anybody’s realistic timeframe.

We have no time set for it but I am a man of belief. I thought it was the right thing to do I, still do.’

Scudamore added that global interest is part of the reason for the Premier League’s success and that there is a school of thought to recognise that.

‘I fully understand those who have bought a season ticket, been to every game home and away for the last 25 years, deem themselves to be at the highest echelon of fan commitment,’ he said. ‘I get that. You can’t take that away from anyone but also I think those fans realise that now the Premier League and those clubs are global success stories.

'That global success has come from interest that other fans have. This is not a patronising, false interest. The bit that always strikes a chord is how knowledgeable and passionate they are.

'I would put a lot of people here on these trips up against anyone back home, pub quiz, in terms of knowledge of the club. The fact they haven’t walked down through terraced houses, smelt the hot dogs and onions and the dodged the police horse c**p on the pavement you have to step in in order to enjoy your Premier League experience.

'I understand they haven’t sensed that - but that’s not to say there isn’t a an appreciation a knowledge a passion, an interest and it’s that which is being channelled to make the game what it is.’

Bringing the Premier League Trophy to Hong Kong is part of that reward process. In 2013, it was thought there would be no return after pitch problems saw players injured and managers outraged.

Similar fears had been raised again this year after torrential rain, before a break in the weather saw the semi-finals, between Leicester City and West Brom and Liverpool and Crystal Palace, pass without incident at a packed Hong Kong Stadium.

‘Of course,’ Scudamore said when asked if he was worried. ‘But there’s always been a huge confidence in the pitch.’

Whilst in Hong Kong, coaches from the four clubs and top flight referees have passed on their knowledge to local coaches and referees through the league’s Premier Skills programme.

Saints’ academy production among the world’s best

Show/hide article…

SAINTS’ academy products contributed among the most of any club in the world to the Premier League last season.

Only three academies on the planet can top that, with Manchester United leading the way on a staggering 44,055 minutes, followed by Tottenham (19,995) and Manchester City (16,226).

James Ward-Prowse tops the game-time rankings among those from the academy still at Saints, having completed 1,884 minutes.

That’s more that half the 3,108 minutes accumulated in total by graduates at St Mary’s, with Sam McQueen in second on 608 and Matt Targett (374), Josh Sims (206) and Harrison Reed (63) completing the list.

Adam Lallana played 2,349 top-flight minutes for Liverpool, making him the biggest contributor of all Staplewood’s products, with Calum Chambers (2,160) following close behind, having played mostly on loan at relegated Middlesbrough from Arsenal.

The Gunners’ other Saints academy men, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, added 1,924 and 1,562 minutes respectively to the tally, helped by AFC Bournemouth’s Andrew Surman (1,803 minutes) and Tyrone Mings (505 minutes).

Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, who moved from Saints for £30m in 2014, accumulated just 691 minutes, while Nathan Dyer played just 212 minutes for Swansea.

The totals refer to players who finished their development with the club, hence why Jack Stephens, who moved to Saints from Plymouth Argyle at 16 years old, for example, does not make the list.

It was, though, Manchester United’s academy that made the single biggest contribution to last season’s Premier League of any youth set-up.

The Press Assocation research showed that their graduates racked up more than twice as many top-flight minutes played as the next best academy.

Of last season’s European qualifiers from the Premier League, Liverpool are the only one not to feature in the top 10, ranking 17th in the study with 8,753 minutes.

Former Saints coach denies more than 60 child sexual abuse charges

Show/hide article…

A former Southampton FC youth coach has denied a series of charges of sexual offences following a police probe into historical child abuse in the football community.

Robert Higgins, 64, faces 63 counts of indecent assault and two counts of attempted indecent assault committed against 23 teenage boys, all aged under 17.

Southampton Magistrates’ Court heard that the alleged offences date between 1970 and 1996.

The ex-Saints youth coach, known as Bob, of Litchfield Road, Southampton, spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address during the short hearing.

He indicated that he would plead not guilty to the alleged offences and the magistrates sent the case to be tried at Winchester Crown Court.

Dan O’Neill, prosecuting, told the court: “These matters are not suitable for summary trial as they are substantial offences spanning three decades.”

Chairman of the bench Alan Foster told Higgins: "You pleaded not guilty to these offences and you will go to be tried at Winchester Crown Court.

“The first hearing is on August 16 and you are now on unconditional bail.”

Premier League’s ‘39th’ game abroad not on Richard Scudamore’s agenda

Show/hide article…

The Premier League chairman insists there is no plan to play a 39th fixture abroad, despite top-flight clubs’ interest.

Richard Scudamore, speaking at the Premier League Asia Trophy, admitted he still has wounds from the backlash against the initial idea of a round of matches being played on foreign soil, which was mooted three years ago.

Liverpool and Leicester will contest the final of this year’s pre-season tournament in Hong Kong on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Premier League, while Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are all featuring abroad in the International Champions Cup this summer.

Premier League clubs continue to illustrate ambitions of maximising their market appeal in other continents, but Scudamore assured English supporters there are no plans to up sticks for a foreign fixture as yet.

“I’ve got the scars all the way up my back (from the last time),” he said. "Look, I may be at the Premier League for five, 10, 15 or 20 years. There is no plan to do it.

“Is there still a burning desire? The clubs would like to do it but we are also realistic that says until the fan, political and media reaction is any more warm towards it, it won’t happen.”

Scudamore added: "If it did happen it wouldn’t be a 39th game.

“We have no time set for it but I am a man of belief. I thought it was the right thing to do I, still do.”

Scudamore believes the passion for the Premier League from fans in far corners of the world can match those on the terraces in England.

“I fully understand those who have bought a season ticket, been to every game home and away for the last 25 years, deem themselves to be at the highest echelon of fan commitment,” he said.

"I get that. You can’t take that away from anyone but also I think those fans realise that now the Premier League and those clubs are global success stories.
