England’s 2017 youth successes: which clubs supplied the most players for the Three Lions’ World Cup and Euro glory?

Show/hide article…

England’s youth sides have seen plenty of action this summer, and been pretty successful too.

It started well when our Under-17 reached the final of the European Championships, before losing to Spain on penalties. But our Under-20 side went one better, winning the World Cup, beating Venezuela in the final.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get much better, our Toulon Tournament side, made up from Under-18s, Under-19, and Under-20s, won that competition too.

The Under-21s weren’t quite so fortunate, losing on penalties to Germany in the semi-finals of the European Championship, while our Under-19s triumphed in their own European Championship.

That makes it three tournament wins out of five, one finalist, and another semi-finalist, which is not bad at all.

But which football teams contributed the most players? Click the right arrow above to find out…

He made his England debut in November 2013, in a friendly against Chile, and has gone on to win six caps.

Fraser Forster signs five-year Southampton contract

Show/hide article…

The England goalkeeper has committed his future until 2022, just 12 months after signing a previous five-year deal.

Forster joined Saints in 2014 and was the club’s sole ever-present Premier League player last season.

“I’m delighted,” he told the club website. "I have absolutely loved my time here at Southampton so far and when the opportunity came along to extend it I didn’t think twice about it.

“I think it’s a fantastic club to be at, with a really bright future, and the ambition shown at the club is one where they want to move it forward, so for me, it was a no-brainer.”

Vice-chairman Les Reed said: “We are extremely pleased to have strengthened our commitment with Fraser, who has been an integral part of our team over the past three seasons.”

England international Forster already had a contract up until 2021 but has now committed to a further season through to 2022.

“I’m delighted. I have absolutely loved my time here at Southampton so far and when the opportunity came along to extend it I didn’t think twice about it,” Forster told the club website.

LISTEN: Liverpool NEED more signings and should ‘do whatever they have to do’ to get Virgil van Dijk, Graeme Souness tells

Show/hide article…

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness says the Reds are lacking the squad depth to challenge for the Premier League title this season, and should do everything in their power to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk to boost their chances.

The Dutch defender was strongly linked with a move to Anfield before the transfer window opened, but the deal appeared to be dead after the Saints accused the Reds of illegally tapping up their star man.

However, it is understood they are now back in the hunt after a Premier League investigation excused the Reds of any wrongdoing.

Southampton have repeatedly insisted they will not sell Van Dijk unless a club meets their £60million asking price.

But Souness says Liverpool should ‘push the boat out’ and ‘do whatever they need to do’ to land him, as they are currently not strong enough to ‘make an impression’ in the Premier League and Champions League this term.

Speaking to the Alan Brazil Sport Breakfast about his disappointment over Liverpool’s lack of activity in the market, Souness said: “I would have liked to have seen a bit more action. I think Liverpool are still a bit off challenging for the title.

“With the demands of the Champions League next year, if two or three players get knocks and aren’t playing all the time that could badly damage them.

“I don’t think they’ve got enough strength in depth to make a real impression in the two big trophies.

“A new centre-half, that would have been the main one for me. If I was manager of Liverpool at this time I would have pushed the boat out and done whatever you had to do to get the boy Van Dijk.

“It looks like Southampton are digging their heels in, but Southampton do sell players, they have done consistently over the last few years.

“I’m an enormous fan of Van Dijk, I would love for him to go to Liverpool.

“When a player makes things look easy, that tells you they’re really good at what they do.

“Whoever gets him would improve them greatly, and it’ll be a shame if it’s not Liverpool.

“But, it may still happen, we don’t know.”

The 29-year-old’s previous deal was not due to expire until 2021, but he has now committed himself to the club for a further year.
