Pellegrino faces formation dilemma

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted mulling over a change in formation – but faces a tricky dilemma on whether to act on it for tomorrow’s game against Newcastle.

The Saints manager has started with a 4-2-3-1 formation so far this season but has come under increasing pressure to do something different to try and get this side scoring again.

There has been speculation that Pellegrino could switch to playing with three centre halves.

Though the Saints boss has been thinking about it, he is cautious about whether to make a big change having been robbed of time to work on it with 12 first team players having been away on international duty over the past fortnight.

He said: “I was thinking about it (changing formation), but also at the same time we didn’t have too much time to work together, and this is the question.

“Sometimes if we drew the other day against Stoke we aren’t talking about changing a lot of things.

“Sometimes the result you think you have to change when you don’t get a result, but we have to analyse well what we are doing well, what we are doing wrong.

“I think we have to keep going with this mentality.

“Obviously we have to improve, not just in attack but for me in defence in second ball, in set plays in a lot of areas we can be better.”

Newcastle have shown a lot of resilience this season under Pellegrino’s former mentor Rafa Benitez, and that adds to the uncertainty.

“I think they are getting better like every single team,” reflected Pellegrino.

“After seven games most of the team are playing because they are adapting, the manager adapting the tactical ideas to the players.

“The Premier League is really tough. Last game against Liverpool they were really good in defence but I think they will be a difficult team to penetrate but we have the quality to try to win the game.”

Jurgen Klopp says defence issues not down to not getting van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken of his frustration of defensive issues being blamed on the club not strengthening in the summer.

Klopp has come under scrutiny in recent weeks for the way his side have conceded.

But he does not believe his failed pursuit of Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk should be brought up each time Liverpool make a defensive error.

He told Sky Sports: ‘We are a good side but we have been speaking since the beginning of the season about how we didn’t buy a defender in the summer. This becomes like a self-fulfilling prophecy because every mistake we make goes back to that.’

Liverpool host Manchester United in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday.

United have won six out of their first seven Premier League matches. They have also scored 21 goals, with in-form Romelu Lukaku getting seven of those.

Liverpool are seven points behind Jose Mourinho’s side in the table, having lost one game and shipped 12 goals.

Klopp, however, believes his players are good enough to resolve their defensive problems.

He added: The boys know this, they don’t feel the confidence. They are good enough but we always have to improve.

'We don’t say it’s a little bit of luck and this changes. The challenge for us is to stay confident and play football even when we don’t get the results we want.

‘We don’t have to think too much about performance. We have to improve of course in defending our offensive situations. We are not being out-played, teams are not playing their way past us. It is counter-attacking [that has undone us] and we could have done better to stop this, especially at Newcastle. Most of the time, though, we do really well.’

Time to kick-start Saints’ season

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is desperate for Saints to start picking up the points he believes they deserve to kick-start their season.

After what Pellegrino feels were harsh defeats to Manchester United and Stoke before the latest international break, Saints are preparing to take on Newcastle at St Mary’s to kick-off a vital run of fixtures.

With home matches against the Magpies, West Brom and Burnley, as well as a trip to Brighton to come before the next international break, Pellegrino is all too aware that Saints need points on the board now if they are to make anything of their league campaign.

He said: “The game on Sunday is really important for us and we have to start with the first one.

“It is true that every single game are important, also because we play in these four games, three games at home.

“I think that we have to push ourselves to get these points that we deserve in other games, and to transform goals into points with our performance.

“Obviously I would like to win as much as we can, but the position right now doesn’t mean anything, because the conclusion has to be at the end, and the conclusion is at the end.

“Obviously we can talk about performance, how we are, how we have to improve, but I think we deserve to get a couple more points normally.

Having netted just twice in their last six matches, a problem carried over from last season, and facing opposition who are likely to defend deep and offer up little space, Saints need to find an answer.

“I think we have to keep going in the positive thing because we are dominating them, we are controlling the game, we are working to coordinate better movement in wide areas to arrive with more determination,” reflected Pellegrino.

“There could be a good possibility this Sunday to show in this opportunity to be better than last game.”

He added: “I think that we are one of the teams that arrive more in the Premier League in the final third with crosses and penetrating, and this is difficult.

“To transform these stats to goals is something that is not easy.

“I think we have to improve a lot of things and not just score goals. The other we concede set plays and soft goal at the end.

“All of us have to improve.”

Pellegrino on importance of Newcastle game

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino knows an important few weeks lie ahead for Southampton, but says all the focus is on getting it off to a good start with three points against Newcastle.

Three of the team’s next four matches are at home, with West Brom and Burnley also visiting St Mary’s, while there is a trip to Brighton coming up too ahead of the next international break.

Pellegrino is hopeful of his side turning performances into points, after two unfortunate defeats against Manchester United and Stoke in their last couple of outings, and has underlined the importance of doing just that against Newcastle on Sunday.

“It is an important game for us,” he said. "We want to show our best version on Sunday, and hopefully it will be a nice game for us.

"I think we deserved to have a couple more points for sure, because against Man United we didn’t deserve to lose the game and against Stoke it was more or less the same situation.

“But, in football, it’s efficiency. We have to be there to try to translate to the net our performance. We are doing positive things, but, at the same time, we have to improve in some different moments, to be more clever, to be more clinical and we are continuing in our way to try to show in this opportunity how we are.”

Looking ahead to the run to the next international break, Pellegrino said: "We have to think about the first one and to put our energy 100 per cent there.

“Obviously, we will play three games at home in the next four and it will be important for us to try to get points from all of them, but we have to think about this first one.”

Match Preview: Saints vs Newcastle

Show/hide article…

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Having impressed despite defeat against Manchester United three weeks ago, Southampton will have been disappointed with the nature of the loss at Stoke that followed.

The visit of Newcastle this weekend however on the other side of the international break, represents the perfect opportunity for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men to begin climbing the table as 12th meets 9th at St.Mary’s.

Saints have won more Premier League games in total (15) and at home (12) against Newcastle than they have against any other side in the competition.

After three straight losses had Newcastle fans fearing the worst in August, the Magpies bounced back to collect 10 points from their last five games to find themselves comfortably in mid-table.

Consecutive wins over West Ham, Swansea and Stoke and a hard-fought draw with Liverpool demonstrated what Rafa Benitez’s outfit are capable of so Saints will need to be at their very best to get back on track on Sunday.

Traditionally weak on the road, Newcastle have picked up just five points from a possible 42 in the top flight, their solitary win in that time coming last month at Swansea.

TEAM NEWS

Saints’ Shane Long was ruled out of Republic of Ireland’s decisive World Cup qualifying clash with Wales on Monday night. The striker looks set however to win his fitness battle and feature in the match day squad on Sunday.

Matt Targett remains Southampton’s only other injury concern, with all of Mauricio Pellegrino’s international stars returning safely from their duties.

Newcastle are hoping to welcome back Christian Atsu as the Ghanaian winger recovers from a knock.

Should Atsu return, Paul Dummett and Masadio Haïdara will be the away side’s only absentees.

The lack of transfer activity coming out of St.James’ Park over the summer led boss Benitez to air his frustrations in public.

Fast forward two months and it is one of the Magpies’ Championship recruits of last year – Matt Ritchie - who has been making them tick so far this season.

The former Bournemouth winger’s set-piece delivery, work rate and intensity has drawn the praise of the home fans of late, not least for his man-of-the- match performance against Liverpool last time out.

Jamaal Lascelles meanwhile – the youngest captain in Premier League history - was a nominee for the Premier League Player of the Month award, the defender scoring twice and keeping one clean sheet in a productive month for the Magpies.

PREVIOUS FOUR MEETINGS

April 2016: Saints 3-1 Newcastle

August 2015: Newcastle 2-2 Saints

January 2015: Newcastle 1-2 Saints

September 2014: Saints 4-0 Newcastle

DID YOU KNOW?

Rafael Benitez has failed to collect a single point in his three previous Premier League trips to St.Mary’s – all with different times. The Spaniard lost here with Liverpool in January 2005, Chelsea in March 2013 and Newcastle in April 2016.

What’s more, Sunday’s visitors haven’t kept a clean sheet in the top-flight against Southampton for 26 games, since a 0-0 draw in February 1969.
