Saints Foundation to host education open evening

Show/hide article…

Saints Foundation is encouraging prospective students to find out more about their increasingly popular and unique post-16 education programme.

The Foundation has been running successful BTEC education programmes at St Mary’s since 2011, with five cohorts of students now studying at the home of Southampton FC.

The programme, available to both male and female students aged 16-18, offers the opportunity to gain a BTEC Extended National Diploma in Sport – equivalent to three A levels – and combine this with a football and futsal training programme, with competitive fixtures in national leagues.

Alongside providing a first-class education and performance football programme for the two years, the course also offers various work experience placements through Saints Foundation’s charitable project work; providing a strong balance of education, life skills and experience within the football industry.

The competitive football programme will see male and female students representing Saints Foundation against other Premier League education teams across the country, while the Futsal teams will compete in the national EFL competitions.

i have been involved with the education department at the saints foundation since it started in 2011, and to see it evolve in to a programme with over 120 students, male and female, is something i am very proud of.

With previous students going on to sports related degrees in the UK, scholarships at Colleges in the USA and paid work in the sports industry the programme has already demonstrated a strong track record of success.

For people who wish to find out more information, there will be an open evening in the Matthew Le Tissier Suite, at St Mary’s Stadium, from 6pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 8th November.

Kevin Davies: Southport appoint former England international as manager

Show/hide article…

Ex-England international Kevin Davies has been appointed manager of National League North club Southport on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Striker Davies scored 150 goals in 820 appearances for Chesterfield, Southampton, Blackburn, Millwall, Bolton and Preston.

He made one appearance for England, coming on as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Montenegro in 2010, aged 33.

This will be the 40-year-old’s first job in management.

Davies, who retired from playing in September 2015, said: "I am delighted to be appointed as the new Southport manager. This is a great opportunity and the timing is right for me.

“This is a very exciting time to be involved with Southport, with new investment to develop the stadium and infrastructure.”

The Sandgrounders are 16th in the sixth tier after 13 matches.

Ex-Saint makes first move in to management

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints striker Kevin Davies has been appointed as the new manager of Southport in the National League North.

Davies, who scored 25 goals in 125 appearances for Saints across two spells, signs a two-and-a-half year deal with the Merseyside outfit in what is his first managerial appointment since hanging up his boots in September 2015.

“I am delighted to be appointed as the new Southport FC Manager,” Davies said. “This is a great opportunity and the timing is right for me to step into management.

“Over my 22 year playing career I was privileged to work under some fantastic managers, including four who managed England.

“My career was built on hard work, passion and a strong desire to do whatever it takes to win a game of football.

“There is lots of hard work ahead and it is a challenge that I am relishing.

“This is a very exciting time to be involved with Southport FC with new investment to develop the stadium and infrastructure.

“Football is about creating memories and I, along with my assistant John Dreyer, players and staff, will be working tirelessly to take the club forward in a positive direction.”

Redmond’s England aim

Show/hide article…

SAINTS man Nathan Redmond has revealed a summer pep talk from England boss Gareth Southgate helped him overcome his penalty heartache.

The wideman forward missed the crucial spot kick in England Under-21s’ Euro 2017 semi-final shoot-out defeat to Germany in June.

It was his last touch for the Young Lions as he became too old to represent Aidy Boothroyd’s side and he left Tychy in tears.

England went out 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra time but senior boss Southgate, who missed his own crucial semi-final spot kick when England lost to Germany at Euro 96, has offered Redmond words of wisdom.

Speaking for the first time about the miss Redmond said: "He called me to see how I was doing. The England penalty miss was one of the biggest things to happen to him, he’s told us about death threats and not being able to go out.

"He reiterated all of that to me and told me to relax and that it was more important for me to work hard to get into the senior side than it would be to dwell on it. The only person to pay for it would be me.

"It’s a massive learning period in my life. At the time I wanted the ground to swallow me up but I had to face everything which came with it.

"I’m the person who has to look in the mirror and be happy. It’s part of my past and the one thing which hit me the most was it was the last time playing for the England youth set-up.

“It’s a transition period now going from a young player to a fully established Premier League player.”

He is now aiming to regain his place back in the senior squad after being left out by Southgate since making his debut against Germany in March.

“It’s always been the aim for a few seasons,” said the 23-year-old. “I managed to do it March and it gave me a bit more motivation to come back. If I put my performances right with Southampton I’ll be back.”

Redmond was speaking after becoming an ambassador for children’s charity Right To Play which uses sport and play to educate and help children in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities.

The former Norwich and Birmingham man is also donating to the charity and wants to spread the word of their good work.

“Football has played a massive part in my life and while I wasn’t fortunate enough to have both parents around I had a very strong mother who has always supported me,” he said.

“I’m with the message Right To Play are putting forward which is to give disadvantaged kids over the world the chance to get involved in sport and to get an education. I want to push that message out there.”

Tadić: We want to make the fans happy

Show/hide article…

Twice coming from behind by virtue of Manolo Gabbiadini, Saints showed character to avoid defeat to the Magpies, but Tadić is intent on ensuring the team now starts to accumulate more points at home.

Reflecting on the Newcastle deadlock, Tadić said: "I think it is a disappointment, because we only take a point, but also we came back from losing the game. This is positive.

“We need to win these kinds of matches, we know it isn’t easy but we can play better. It is very important [to win on Saturday], because winning games gives you extra confidence.”

While recognising the demand for improvement, the Serbia international also praised the influence of a St Mary’s capacity crowd, and the need to assuage frustrations after a string of winless results.

“We like to play in front of the home crowd, although we haven’t taken as many points as we’d like at home this season,” Tadić continued.

"But we’ll try to change that and try to make our fans happy.

“It is too early to think about the league table, every club is close to each other. But as the season goes on there is more emphasis on the table and then we’ll look at where we stand and where we want to be.”

Saints are “nervous” hosts

Show/hide article…

DUSAN Tadic is adamant Saints are not mentally weak – but admits they get “nervous” playing at St Mary’s at the moment.

Saints have won just once in five home games in the Premier League this season and have often been booed by their own supporters after turgid displays.

But Mauricio Pellegrino’s men want to atone for their poor results by being more “aggressive” and playing “faster” when they welcome West Bromwich Albion to the south coast on Saturday.

“Sometimes we miss chances and then the opponents score the first goal and we become a bit nervous,” Tadic said, who wants Saints to be more exciting.

"This is may be one of the problems. I don’t know really, but it’s true when we’re at home and away we need to be more aggressive and play much faster.

“We will then get the energy from the fans and then we can score.”

The playmaker, who has netted once in eight games this term, believes the team are influenced by the negative atmosphere that has sometimes featured at St Mary’s as Saints sturggle to hit form at home.

“Yes, but also it’s normal when you’re a fan and you like a club that you’ll be frustrated by some things because you love the club,” he said.

"When we play sometimes at home we need to make, from the first moment, a warm atmosphere. Then the fans will be with us.

"They are with us but I mean we want to push and give them something, more excitement, and then they’ll take more joy from watching us and they’ll be more lively.

“Also for us we know this is what we should do at home and because before [in previous seasons] we broke teams like that. When we played at home we broke teams easier.”

When asked if he felt Saints were mentally weak at the moment, Tadic replied: "I cannot say that.

“I don’t know what is the problem but hopefully we will solve that against West Brom.”

The Serbia international, who has just helped his nation to qualification to the World Cup finals in Russia next summer, wants Saints to up their tempo.

Often Pellegrino’s side have been unable to break down defensive opponents and have been accused of producing pedestrian build-up play not conductive to breaking down compact sides.

Tadic explained: "We need to play fast. When someone is well organised you need to break them but if you wait one or two seconds the moment is gone.

“But if you play fast I think we can break them.”

READER LETTER: Can we please have some excitement at St Mary’s?

Show/hide article…

I HAD high hopes for Mr Pellegrino, I still do. I sincerely hope he gets it right and I’m not advocating him going.

However, I am bemused by the continuing glaring failings in the Saints team and the tactics which frankly show marginal improvement on Claude Puel’s latter period.

The league cup final was an object lesson in how to entertain and offer an alternative, it proved to be an island however. But we went down fighting and, result apart –which was desperately unlucky – we enjoyed it.

Against Newcastle on Sunday we still had no ability to make an incisive (and early) pass to give the forwards something to bite on.

It’s all so one-paced. It’s boring, it’s monotonous, it’s frustrating. We effectively had six at the back and a line of four up front. The middle was vacant. Result? Lots of passing between the back six and nowhere to go. High possession, low entertainment, zero penetration.

Same old things, same old result. Apart from one surprise forward punt and a piece of Gabbiadini magic (he gets such scant service), time is surely up for some players?

Nathan Redmond seems to prefer to go backwards rather than attack. Fraser Forster is currently too often a liability. Dusan Tadic simply disappears for long periods then pops up and shoots wide. They need to be dropped.

If I didn’t have a season ticket it would be cheaper and more entertaining to watch paint dry.

In more than 50 years I have been largely entertained (Branfoot era excepted) by largely adventurous teams. What is the point of high possession safety-first football if it results in lacklustre performances and poor results?

Can we please have some excitement, the odd change of pace perhaps, some entertainment?
