Stat Pack: Saints vs West Brom

Show/hide article…

Take a look at the key facts and figures ahead of Southampton’s Premier League clash with West Bromwich Albion at St Mary’s…

Saints have won two of their last three Premier League games against West Brom, as many as they had in their previous nine against them in the competition.

  • After a winless run of 19 games in all competitions at Southampton, the Baggies have won two of their last five away games against Saints (D1 L2).

West Bromwich Albion have now scored 47 set-piece goals (excluding penalties) in the Premier League since Tony Pulis took charge of the club, more than any other side.

Manolo Gabbiadini scored with both of his shots against Newcastle United last time out.

Of Tony Pulis’s 102 Premier League games in charge of West Brom, only 10 of these have seen the Baggies have more possession than their opponents, while 60 of these games have seen WBA hold less than 40 per cent of possession.

19 different players have made a Premier League appearance this season aged 34 or older, four of which have been for West Brom – Ben Foster, Boaz Myhill, Gareth Barry and Gareth McAuley. No other side handed appearances to more than two players aged 34 or older this season.

If Shane Long plays against his former club on Saturday, it will mark his 100th Premier League appearance for Southampton.

Inside Track: West Brom

Show/hide article…

Ahead of Southampton’s next Premier League match, we spoke with Birmingham Mail journalist Joe Chapman to get a full scouting report on Saturday’s visitors, West Bromwich Albion…

After a bright start, the Baggies haven’t won since the end of August. What’s the mood like around the Hawthorns at the moment?

There’s a newfound expectation after such a positive transfer window.

That Albion haven’t won in their last six matches - incidentally since many of the new signings arrived - means that spirits aren’t particularly high at the moment, especially after conceding late goals against Watford and Leicester when leading in their last two games.

That might be the collective feeling among the majority of the fan base, but from an individual point of view Nacer Chadli will be flying - his first league appearance of the season on Monday was of course crowned with that wonderful free-kick.

What are supporters expecting from West Brom this season? What would go down as a successful campaign?

While Tony Pulis is doing the job asked of him, I think a number of Albion fans would desire a more attractive style of football each week, now that the squad is of such good quality.

A repeat of last season’s top ten finish would certainly be appreciated too. The fifty-point total is still elusive (49 in 2013 remains the club’s highest Premier League finish) so that’d be another box to tick.

The Baggies earned plaudits for their transfer business over the summer, how have the new recruits – in particular Jay Rodriguez – been settling in so far?

Generally very well.

Rodriguez was the club’s first arrival in the summer, and he started promisingly. He enjoyed a positive pre-season and has two goals this campaign.

He’s so far remained fit which is a major plus and there are whispers of Gareth Southgate considering handing him an England recall.

Elsewhere, Kieran Gibbs was Albion’s stand-out performer on Monday night. He’s been a particularly welcome arrival, as the left-back position had previously been a long-term issue.

Grzegorz Krychowiak looks a real coup, he’s settled in well in midfield, while Gareth Barry and Ahmed Hegazi have been generally steady.

We’re yet to see much of Oliver Burke, who has had trouble with injury.

Who should Saints fans be looking out for in the West Brom line-up on Saturday?

Certainly Krychowiak. He’s proven that, given time on the ball, he can hurt teams from the middle of the park.

Craig Dawson remains the Baggies’ prominent aerial threat, so keep a keen eye on him for set-pieces.

A Rodriguez goal on his first St Mary’s return wouldn’t go amiss either!

Reports today suggest the south coast outfit are locked in a tug-of-war with French side Lille for the signature of the striker.

It is believed Saints have already held talks with the Catalan giants about switching Alcacer, 24, to red and white colours in January.

Hopefully for Saints fans, his missus Bea Viana will be packing in her suitcase the kind of bikinis that have commanded the hottie over 30,000 Instagram followers.

One March: Ethnicity

Show/hide article…

Over the years a number of Polish players have turned out for Saints, and our most recent Polish signing, Jan Bednarek, spent time with a local football club earlier this month to better understand the work they’ve done to integrate Polish children into the community.

Local charity SOS Polonia formed in 2004, originally with the aim of helping migrant workers settle into life in the Southampton. They soon realised, though, that they could also help the young children who had moved to a new country with their parents settle into their new environment.

That’s why, in 2006, SOS Polonia founded Lingland Juniors Football Club with the aim of helping children from Polish migrant families settle into their new schools, make friends and overcome the sudden loss of the familiar world they had left behind.

The predominantly Polish team were playing in the Eastleigh & District Mini Soccer League and, when they were approached by a local junior side struggling for numbers, Townhill Lingland FC was formed.

Michael Robinson, a coach with Townhill Lingland, told us: “Townhill Lingland FC really does bring the Polish and English children together and they enjoy playing together and it really does give a good community environment for them.”

As part of One March week, and to recognise the great work of SOS Polonia and Townhill Lingland FC, Jan visited a recent training session to surprise the team with tickets for the One March fixture against West Brom. The players, parents and coaches then also had the chance to ask him questions about being a professional footballer and what it’s been like to settle into a new culture.

Southampton Football Club will be looking to build our relationship with the local Polish community as part of our ongoing One March initiative and is committed to bringing more fans into St Mary’s from all backgrounds. If you have any ideas or recommendations that you feel may improve the club’s matchday experience, please contact our Supporter Relations team by emailing supporterrelations@saintsfc.co.uk or calling 02380 711980.

To help us tackle discrimination, as part of the One March equality initiative, we’ve introduced a new text number that will make it easy for you to report any instances of discrimination or abuse that you witness in the stadium or at an away match.

To report anything you see or hear at a game, simply text onemarch to 60060 with a description of what you’ve witnessed and your location so we can tackle it appropriately and discreetly.

Barcelona news: Southampton and Lille join hunt for Paco Alcacer

Show/hide article…

Barcelona star Paco Alcacer is wanted by Southampton and Lille

The Sun say the Saints are keen to secure his signature.

However, reports earlier today claimed Lille are also now in the hunt.

It’s suggested the Ligue 1 outfit are keen to take him on loan in January with the view to a permanent summer deal.

Lille’s director general Marc Ingla has reportedly travelled to Barcelona to discuss the move.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa needs to bolster his options up front and he’s given the green light for Alcacer’s arrival.

Southampton, meanwhile, similarly need add goals to their shot-shy squad.

The Saints drew 2-2 with Newcastle on Sunday.
