Southampton ace Manolo Gabbiadini will set Premier League alight now - Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Misfiring Gabbiadini had only scored once in 16 games before hitting a double – including a late penalty – to help Southampton hold Newcastle to a 2-2 draw.

Saints boss Pellegrino said: “It is positive Manolo scored because goals completes the strikers’ job.

“Manolo is an important player for us. Shane Long and Manolo worked really hard for the team and the goals will be positive for his confidence.”

Pellegrino blamed himself for the fact Saints twice found themselves to strikes from Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez.

He admitted: “It was a chaotic game. After we equalised first time we conceded a soft goal too quickly.

WATCH: Young Saint fluffs his lines

Show/hide article…

It seems Southampton’s struggles in front of goal are not just with their first team, judging by the finishing of one young Saint.

At half-time of Southampton’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, and with the home side once again drawing a blank at St Mary’s at the time, one youngster attempted to show the professionals how to do it.

However, it did not go quite according to plan, as the above video shows…

Premier League fans’ verdict: Kevin De Bruyne is main man yet again

Show/hide article…

The Premier League returned following the international break and we were treated to a number of thrills and spills.

Manchester City thrashed Stoke 7-2 as Crystal Palace claimed their first win of the season over Chelsea.

Here, Sportsmail gets the fans’ verdicts following the latest weekend of action.

All too predictable. Jose Mourinho did what he does and Liverpool once again couldn’t find a way to overcome it.

On the plus side the Reds were excellent defensively and while it’s easy to put that down to a lack of ambition from United, they had talented attacking players on the field and hoped to catch Liverpool on the break.

They never really threatened to do so because Jurgen Klopp’s men were disciplined and determined in their defensive work. Liverpool are playing well, they just have to find a way to turn dominance into wins.

Jose Mourinho will be happy with a point at Anfield but Manchester United were poor, particularly in the second half.

It was a game between two teams who were scared to lose that that really came across in this match.

Burnley - that’s the team that can be found in the league table with the same number of points as Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

It might not have been a classic but it’s another point and we are now on a run of six Premier League games unbeaten.

There’s no doubt we deserved the point against West Ham but it was late in coming with a Chris Wood goal just five minutes from time but again it showed the real qualities of our team who just keep going.

West Ham can take a lot of stock from Saturday’s performance.

With a fully fit squad, Slaven Bilic was able to field the team he thought would be the most effective and it showed as the Hammers were dominant and took an early lead up until Andy Carroll’s unforegivable red card.

Understandably, Burnley made it tough afterwards, brining on lumbering centre forwards and pumping long ball after long ball but the West Ham defence stood tall for 85 minutes but in the end it was just one cross too many.

Even down to 10 men, the Hammers were the better side creating the more dangerous chances and to grab a point after playing over an hour with a man less on the road, you’d have taken it.

Finally a performance and a result for us to be oh so proud of.

The return of Wilf was the catalysty for the team and fans alike.

Selhurst was loud and the players pulled together to put in a brilliant shift against the champions and deservedly took all three points in a fixture no-one gave us a hope in hell of getting anything from.

Fair play to our hosts. They showed determination, desire, passion and a will to win at all costs.

This lot had won none, drawn none and lost seven on the spin.

As for Chelsea this afternoon, I am lost for words as Champions! The Blues need to stop living on past glories and wake up!

It’s getting silly now - nobody should be this consistently brilliant and score this many breathtaking goals!

Stoke were not even that bad, they just couldn’t get close to us.

Kevin De Bruyne’s assists were frankly ridiculous - the vision to spot the passes was superb itself, and the ability to pull them off with unerring accuracy is quickly marking him out as the best player in the league.

And to have eight of the 10 outfield players either score or assist shows just how well we are working as a team. It truly is a joy to watch.

The good news: Stoke became the first side to score two goals in a game past Man City this season.

The bad news: We were utterly abysmal in this game. On a day when the home side really clicked we were a complete shambles and it was shocking to see. We had our backsides handed to us on a plate.

The really bad news: Our one brief ray of sunshine was a promising debut from young defender Tom Edwards and he got stretchered from the pitch when we’re 3-2 down. Desperately bad luck for the lad.

A welcome first home win of the season in what was a very satisfying and improved performance by the Swans.

Clement finally changed the system, and opted to play with wingers for the first time in quite a while, and it paid off.

The players looked a lot more comfortable in this system and there were always options for the man on the ball, which resulted in a impressive showing in which we didn’t really give Huddersfield a sniff. Tammy Abraham bagged a brace, and what a player he is. He’s only 20 but looks a like natural up front and has no qualms competing with big, experienced Premier League centre-backs.

I’d love for us to sign him permanently, that’s for sure.

A very poor performance and a result to match. After a very good start to Premier League life, things are going downhill for Town.

In a massive early match in an inevitable relegation battle for both sides, Town weren’t brave enough on the ball and the Swans pressed them high.

The first goal came from yet another individual mistake, with the usually reliable Lossl gifting the opener. Two minutes after the break the tie was settled with a second.

However the main worry is Town’s inability to create, and the lack of real frontline quality on show.

Thank Goodness for that! Scrappy at times but ultimately deserved, we get our first league win at Wembley in front of 70,000 fans in a game that could easily have ended up another disappointing draw.

Christian Eriksen once again proved he’s the man that makes us tick, not only by notching the winner but also because he always looked like the player who could break down yet another stubborn visiting opposition.

With Real Madrid and more difficult games to come in the current month, this win was vital.

AFC Bournemouth did all they could to thwart the attacking play of Spurs.

The precise control and shooting accuracy of Christian Eriksen was the Genie they could not keep in the bottle – he was fabulous all game.

Bournemouth did see Jermaine Defoe go close for an equaliser, but in the end there had to be desperate defending when Asmir Begovic had to take down Nikoudou keep the score at 1-0.

Sadly, it’s no points again but at least the Cherries were not on the end of a hammering as many had forecast.

Scoring late goals is becoming a bit of a habit. As is beating Arsenal 2-1.

Tom Cleverley rifling it in from the penalty spot in the dying moments almost felt like that Troy Deeney goal against Leicester back in 2013.

Arsenal started the strongest but the game turned after the penalty decision. It was a soft penalty, but certainly not a dive from Richarlison.

He had momentum and a slight touch was enough to make him fall. From then on, Arsenal made it easy for us and if anyone deserved to win it, we did.

Arsenal drew up the white flag on the season earlier than expected this year.

Our weak performance embodied all the negative traits Arsene Wenger and Stan Kroenke have worked hard to embed into the fabric of the club over the last 10 years.

Our spine was weak and easily rattled, our mental strength non-existent and there was next to no accountability.

No one cared because the club don’t have sporting values, they continue to let a flaccid manager run amok over a once-great footballing entity.

That saddest part as a fan is we’re not even angry, just indifferent to the slowest car crash in world sport.

Is it even worth shouting Wenger out? Absolutely not. This charade has a way to go before that particular promised land can be reached.

Star man: Troy Deeney for giving Wenger a talking to in the media after the game.

The referee was a complete clown throughout.

He turned down two stonewall shouts for us, but couldn’t wait to give a soft one to them.

We were undone while pressing for a second, and maybe we should have seen the game out deeper, but you can’t knock our desire.

Great to see Knockaert back amongst the goals, and smiling again. It’s a shame that a once-great player like Rooney has become such a drama queen on the pitch as well as off it.

Double-brilliance from Ryan at the end.

Still no game plan, still no organisation. It seems like we’ve relapsed back to the days of Mike Walker.

Calvert-Lewin on the wing, still Gueye and Schneiderlin in midfield, Rooney put in his 40th different position this season and all in a 4-2-3-1, it had boring written all over it and so it proved.

Brighton deserved all three points. This was the 12th away league game we haven’t won. No ambition or drive from anyone. Koeman has to go.

Two goals scored and a point recovered after twice falling behind, yet as the final whistle blew my only lasting emotion was frustration.

Despite being given two weeks off to regroup and innovate, Southampton once again showed the same lacklustre approach to breaking down the opposition, choosing to only show attacking intent once already a goal behind.

Another shocking Nathan Redmond performance was only further highlighted by his lively replacement Sofiane Boufal, whilst Fraser Forster’s run of poor form has already returned.

Mario Lemina was once again outstanding however, and credit to Manolo Gabbiadini for a superb return to the starting line-up.

All things considered, it’s another big opportunity missed at home.

A point that most Newcastle fans would have taken prior to kick off and a fair result, too.

Ayoze Perez was having a pretty frustrating game before restoring Newcastle’s lead in the second half, while Florian Lejeune played very well alongside Jamaal Lascelles at the back but made a costly error bringing down Shane Long to gift Southampton a penalty.

It was one of those games. Only one defeat in the last six Premier League games for Newcastle, but Rafa Benitez may be considering bringing Alexander Mitrovic back into the fray after another forgettable performance for Joselu.

Manolo Gabbiadini’s double rescued Southampton as they twice came from behind to salvage a 2-2 Premier League draw against Newcastle.

Saints looked to be staring down the barrel of a third straight league defeat when Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez put Newcastle ahead in each half at St Mary’s Stadium.

But both times Gabbiadini hit back, his second goal coming from the penalty spot after Newcastle’s Florian Lejeune had brought down Shane Long.

Gabbiadini was making his first start in more than a month and Mauricio Pellegrino will hope his brace prompts a return to the sort of form that saw the Italian score six goals in his first four games for Southampton last season - he had previously only managed one so far this term.

The striker’s intervention here will also come as a relief to England hopeful Fraser Forster after the goalkeeper endured several shaky moments and was caught out of position for both Newcastle’s goals.

For Rafael Benitez’s side, who stay ninth, the game might have been very different had DeAndre Yedlin been handed a second yellow card for a late challenge early in the second period.

Gabbiadini proves a point

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini proved a point as he hit the goal trail in his first start in over a month.

Gabbiadini had been restricted to the sub’s bench for Saints’ three matches prior to yesterday’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle.

But when manager Mauricio Pellegrino turned to him he delivered the goods with his second and third goals of the season.

The first was an excellent solo effort, while the second was a coolly struck penalty which left the keeper with no chance.

Pellegrino said: “It is positive because the goal completes the striker’s job and at the same time we couldn’t help these two goals with a better performance.

“Hopefully next week we can improve in organisation and that is something where we have to better.”

Pellegrino started the game with Gabbiadini playing the number ten role in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Shane Long up top.

The two tried to interchange, with Gabbiadini breaking from deep to try and get beyond Long.

Pellegrino was happy with how the two worked together, and is hoping for even more from them in the future.

“Manolo is an important player for us,” admitted Pellegrino.

“I think Shane and Manolo were working really hard for the team. This is the important thing.

“Sometimes you have to know how to play this type of game.

“It is difficult to play always a game where always you can control everything – the ball, the action and the counter attack.

“I tell my players in the first half we have to be more direct and it’s something we are not used to doing.”

The goals should prove an important confidence booster for Gabbiadini.

The 25-year-old hit the ground running in some style after his signing in January, scoring six goals in five games.

However, he failed to net in his next eight appearances at the back end of the last campaign and then had bagged just one so far in this campaign, in the 3-2 win over West Ham.

Pellegrino said: “It’s positive for his confidence but for me the most important thing is he was working really hard and not just for him but for the team.”

Romeu: ‘we’re not worried’

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu is adamant that Saints are not worried about their poor form – but admits “no one is happy” in the St Mary’s camp at the moment.

Saints have not won in three games and scraped a 2-2 draw at home to newly-promoted Newcastle United thanks to a Manolo Gabbiadini brace.

It left Saints in 10th place in the Premier League and with one home victory in six games in all competitions this campaign.

“I wouldn’t call it worried but no one is happy,” Romeu said. “We’re not happy after not winning today and losing other games at home.

“We want to win and we want to be higher. We’ll keep doing our best to get wins because to be where we want to be we need to win more games.”

Despite their indifferent displays, the Spaniard is sure that Mauricio Pellegrino’s men don’t need to change their approach.

“Before we had a problem with goals now we’ve conceded two where we shouldn’t have,” he said.

“Every game is a different story and we can’t always put each one down to the same reason.

“We have the right mentality, there’s nothing to change. There are things to get better at and to improve.”

There has been growing disquiet in regards to Saints’ performances, but Romeu doesn’t believe any part of the problem is down to their belief in Pellegrino’s philosophy.

“We have confidence in ourselves and we believe in our players and we have enough quality to win games,” he said.

“If we had the key we would find the solution but there’s so many things in football that are open and you think you can control it but suddenly a game is gone.

“It’s about making sure when teams are coming here to defend we need to break them down better and score more and not let them counter attack.”

The 26-year-old was delighted to see Gabbaidni netted his second and third goals of the campaign and has urged Saints to continue to make their star Italian “feel comfortable” in front of goal.

The Italy international struck a sweet solo effort before clinically dispatching a penalty after Shane Long was fouled to make it 2-2 against the Magpies.

Romeu has also backed Long after the Republic of Ireland frontman extended his goal drought to 25 games for club and country.

“He’s a goal threat and we want him to feel comfortable to score goals because we need strikers to score,” he said of Gabbiadini.

“It’s been so good to see him score twice and be there for the team. He and Long did an amazing job.

“Long still hasn’t scored yet but the boy’s work ethic is amazing and this is the kind of striker you need to win games.”

Romeu wants Saints to keep feeding the Saints strikers “as many balls as possible”.

“They are experienced enough to manage these moments,” he said. “Manolo has played plenty of games in Italy and Long the same.

“Everyone’s got moments when they’re not scoring that much, but we have to understand that and we have to give them as many balls as possible so they will have chances to score.”

THE VERDICT: Positives in an average result

Show/hide article…

It would be impossible to say that there weren’t positives to take from Saints’ draw with Newcastle, but there is still a long way to go for this team under Mauricio Pellegrino.

There were certainly things to admire – Saints fought back twice to level things up and end up with a point that they could have lost.

Pellegrino made a positive change by starting Manolo Gabbiadini in the same side as Shane Long, albeit in a 4-2-3-1 formation, and the Italian scored twice. Given we know how streaky he is this could be the start of a run of goals that Saints desperately need.

That there were two goals for Saints, even given that one was from the penalty spot, was at least better.

Pellegrino also made several positive changes as the match went on to try and get the game won, even if opening up did leave Saints exposed.

But you also have to reflect on the things that are still concerning.

To begin with, this result isn’t really good enough.

A draw at home to Newcastle, who are dogged but really not all that great, is far from spectacular.

And given this was the start of a run of four matches where Saints really needed as close to maximum points as possible to kick start a push for seventh, a single point was below par.

Again we saw problems across the team.

Pellegrino has been quick to point out that Saints are not just failing in front of goal, and once more there were worrying signs of a lack of cohesion, a lack of direction and identity and some poor defending from the team as a whole, whether confidence related or otherwise.

These are all things that Pellegrino knows have to be addressed, but it is easier said than done in the white heat of the Premier League campaign.

The first half was, frustratingly, all too predictable.

Newcastle sat deep, were relatively well organised and disciplined, gave Saints all the ball in deep areas and defended for their lives.

That left Saints with that all too familiar challenge of trying to break them down, something they continued to struggle with.

They weren’t without any first half openings.

Dusan Tadic had three opportunities, firing over from range, seeing a shot on the turn deflected wide and heading over the bar when gifted a free header at the far post six yards out, while Virgil van Dijk couldn’t divert a corner on target when Rob Elliot had got lost coming for the ball.

Newcastle’s attacks were fleeting, but they ensured one was decisive.

As in recent games, Saints played a significant part in their own downfall as they fell behind on 20 minutes.

After they had failed to clear with some sluggish defending from van Dijk, Matt Ritchie’s deflected cross found Christian Atsu.

He hit a volley on the spin that was blocked by Maya Yoshida but went straight out to Isaac Hayden.

The midfielder hit an impressive first time low drive from just outside the area that found the net with Fraser Forster unable to recover in time from his initial dive to attempt a save.

The second period was, perhaps surprisingly, a much more open affair.

Newcastle started on the front foot, Joselu’s seemingly aimless flick in the air looping on to the crossbar, before Saints levelled things up on 49 minutes.

It was a terrific solo effort from Manolo Gabbiadini, who brought down a high diagonal ball from the left and held off Javier Manquillo with his back to goal in the area.

He ignored his teammates and dropped to the edge of the area where he made use of just a yard of space to hit a low left footed shot that found the near bottom corner.

Saints’ joy was short lived, however, as Newcastle were back in front just a couple of minutes later.

Newcastle were able to play through the heart of the Saints defence, and Ayoze Perez forced Forster into a near post save and, when the ball came back his way, was able to convert from a tight angle.

Pellegrino shook up formations, style and personnel several times as Saints tried to get back into the game.

When they did, on 75 minutes, it was no more than they deserved, even if it did come via a bit of luck.

Jamaal Lascelles did well to win the ball from Sofiane Boufal but it ricocheted direct to Shane Long.

Long and Saints sprung forward and quickly made their way into the area where the striker was inexplicably chopped down by Florain Lejeune, despite the fact he posed no danger heading away from goal.

Gabbiadini stepped up to take the penalty and slammed it home.

Saints battled for a winning goal in the closing stages, but it was Newcastle who came closest, Steven Davis clearing off the line after Lejeune had lost Charlie Austin from a corner and headed on target.

This crucial period of fixtures in the context of Saints’ season has got off to an average start in terms of the result. You could argue it was not even that.

So there is little margin for error now in the three games that lie ahead.

Saints need to seize on the positives and get some momentum rolling.

Rafa Benitez has guided Newcastle to a solid start to their Premier League campaign

The Magpies looked set to claim their second away win of the season before Florian Lejeune brought down Shane Long in the penalty area.

Manolo Gabbiadini stepped up to score from the spot, and Benitez expressed his sympathy for the Geordies who made the 650-mile round trip to the south coast.

“To bring 3,500 fans this distance, it is a pity we couldn’t get three points and send them home happier.

"It was difficult, but at least we got a point and the team showed that we finished the game with ambition.
