Southampton 2-2 Newcastle: Gabbiadini at the double as Saints are held

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini’s double rescued Southampton as his side twice came from behind to salvage a 2-2 Premier League draw against Newcastle.

Saints looked to be staring down the barrel of a third straight league defeat when Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez put Newcastle ahead in each half at St Mary’s Stadium.

But both times Gabbiadini hit back, his second goal coming from the penalty spot after Newcastle’s Florian Lejeune had brought down Shane Long.

Gabbiadini was making his first start in more than a month and Mauricio Pellegrino will hope his brace prompts a return to the sort of form that saw the Italian score six goals in his first four games for Southampton last season.

He had previously only managed one so far this term.

The striker’s intervention here will also come as a relief to England hopeful Fraser Forster after the goalkeeper endured several shaky moments and was caught out of position for both Newcastle’s goals.

For Rafael Benitez’s side, who stay ninth, this was an opportunity missed against a team struggling for goals and confidence but the game might have been very different had DeAndre Yedlin been handed a second yellow card for a late challenge early in the second period.

Long was passed fit, despite missing the Republic of Ireland’s win over Wales with a hip injury, while Jonjo Shelvey wore a cast on his hand after breaking a finger trying to break up a training ground row last week.

This was something of a battle between the master and the apprentice considering Pellegrino played under Benitez at both Valencia and Liverpool and then later joined the Spaniard’s coaching staff at Anfield.

Roy Hodgson was also watching on in the crowd, with his rejuvenated Crystal Palace side up against Newcastle next weekend.

He might have been encouraged by Newcastle’s defending early on as Dusan Tadic should have put Southampton in front but nodded Nathan Redmond’s cross over when left free at the back post.

It proved a costly miss because in the 20th minute, the visitors took the lead.

Christian Atsu’s driven effort was blocked by Maya Yoshida, but with Forster already diving to his left, Hayden’s first-time shot wrong-footed the goalkeeper and hit the back of the net.

Southampton lost their way and when a free-kick routine resulted in Redmond side-footing straight to his opponent’s feet, the home crowd let out a collective groan of irritation.

Newcastle almost doubled their advantage early in the second half when Perez’s feathered finish dropped onto the bar before two goals arrived, one at each end, in as many minutes.

First, Gabbiadini whipped a shot through the legs of Javier Manquillo and into the bottom corner before Perez restored the Magpies’ lead, reacting fastest to Forster saving his initial shot by squeezing in the rebound from the angle.

Forster, who had already flapped a cross behind and seen a clearance closed down, might have been disappointed not at least to have covered off his near post.

Newcastle were back in the driving seat but fortunate not to play the last half an hour with 10 men as Yedlin, already booked, flew in high and late on Redmond. Referee Kevin Friend judged a final warning punishment enough.

There was no doubt about the penalty decision with 15 minutes left, however, as Lejeune needlessly fouled Long when the striker was posing little threat to Newcastle’s goal. Gabbiadini slammed the spot-kick home to level up.

Both teams pushed forward in search of a late winner and Lejeune almost made amends for his earlier error, only for substitute Steven Davis to clear the Frenchman’s 89th-minute header off the line. It was a dramatic end to a thrilling contest.

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand open to Manchester City move

Show/hide article…

Manchester City have an eye on Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand as they look to bolster their defensive options.

The Spaniard earmarked the wing back position as an area he needed to strengthen during the summer and was interested in bringing in the former Chelsea man.

City instead recruited Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo — splashing £133million in the process.

However, with first-choice left back Mendy possibly out for the season after he sustained a ruptured cruciate ligament in only his fifth City appearance last month, Guardiola may well revisit the Bertrand option.

Fabian Delph has been deputising in the Frenchman’s absence and the lack of a natural back-up could mean Guardiola’s interest from the summer may be piqued again.

Sportsmail understands that the 28-year-old would be receptive to a move to the Etihad Stadium should an offer materialise.

Saints, however, would rebuff any offer for the 17-cap England international unless the north-west club tabled a ludicrous bid.

But City have shown they are willing to bankroll lofty bids for defenders in recent seasons — Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi each cost over £30m while John Stones was prised away from Everton for £47.5m.

City have also looked at Espanyol left back Aaron Martin, having sent scouts to watch him play against Levante last Friday.

Southampton 2-2 Newcastle: Pellegrino shoulders his part of the blame

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino took his share of the responsibility for Saints’ inability to defeat Newcastle at St Mary’s.

The Saints boss saw his side twice come from behind to salvage a point against the Magpies, with Manolo Gabbiadini proving the hero as he netted both the goals in the 2-2 draw.

Saints did at least bag a point from the game, but were hoping for more, and Pellegrino felt his instructions to the players to play more direct in the second half may not have helped his side as much as he wished.

He said: “We get the point. Thinking about it was a chaotic game and after we equalise I think we concede too quick and a soft goal because we have to be more clever in this type of action after being behind in the score a lot of time. We have to be better organised.

“I think the anxiety to try to score the second sometimes you lost control.

“Maybe that is my responsibility because I tell my players we have to play more direct in the second half to try to create something close to the box because Newcastle defensively are really good and close the penetrating passes really well and sometimes you have to break the game, to be a little bit chaotic to try and create something.”

Pellegrino spoke before the match about the fact he felt the team had problems in areas other than just scoring goals, which has taken all the attention of late.

He was proved correct on this occasion as Saints scored twice at home, and yet it was not enough to grab a victory against a midtable side, with both of the goals they conceded being on the soft side, and one coming just two minutes after their first equaliser.

“My feeling is that we never could control the game totally,” admitted Pellegrino.

“I repeat maybe that is my responsibility because I tell the players that we have to break the game to do something different because the last game for Newcastle against Liverpool they couldn’t create too much. I was thinking about diagonal balls and be there with Dusan, Shane and Manolo.

“I think we did ok in some moments but we have to be more clever to defend better.”

Saints might have had a better chance to dominate the game had DeAndre Yedlin been sent off by Kevin Friend for what looked like a second bookable offence.

However, the referee took a lenient approach and instead offered the Newcastle right back a stern warning instead.

“I have to respect the decision of the referee.

“Sometimes it is for us, sometimes for the other, but I can’t say anything.”

Rafa Benitez has defended Florian Lejeune after the defender’s performance against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez defended Florian Lejeune after the French centre-back conceded a second-half penalty that allowed Southampton to snatch a 2-2 draw.

Lejeune was making just his second Premier League appearance for the club after signing from Spanish side Eibar in the summer, but was guilty of needlessly bringing down Shane Long in the box to concede a late penalty kick.

Manolo Gabbiadini smashed home from the spot to deny Newcastle what would have been an incredibly impressive victory at St Mary’s.

After the match, Benitez accepted that Lejeune had made an error to concede the penalty but defended the 26-year-old, who was unlucky not to score a last-gasp winner when his header from inside the box was heroically cleared off the line by Southampton substitute Steven Davis.

“I have not yet seen the replay but from the bench it looks as though it was a penalty,” Benitez conceded.

“Obviously he conceded the penalty that but then afterwards he was almost the hero with the header — that is football.

“He has not played since the opening game against Tottenham and he has been working very hard. During the international break he has been training with the team and I am happy because he is a good player who gives us more options at centre-back.”

Benitez added that he was “pleased overall” with Newcastle’s performance, but admitted he was sorry his side could not produce a win for the travelling fans, who had travelled over 300 miles late on a Sunday afternoon to cheer on their team.

“My big disappointment was for the fans,” he added. “They travelled a very long way to follow the team and it was a pity because we couldn’t get three points so they could go back happy.

“It was difficult but at least we got a point. We can be better and hopefully we will be better but we have to defend better. But overall it was a great performance and it was a great game for everybody to watch.”

His Southampton counterpart Mauricio Pellegrino was rather less pleased with the outcome of the match, urging his team to improve over the coming weeks.

Southampton next face winnable matches against West Brom, Brighton and Burnley, before their fixture list takes a turn for the worse.

“Okay we won the point, but we conceded a soft goal too quickly after equalising and we have to be better organised,” Pellegrino said. “My feeling today was that we never controlled the game totally and next week our organisation has to be better.”

Newcastle’s ‘soft goals’ frustrate Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes Southampton have to work on essential parts of their game after conceding two “soft goals” in their 2-2 draw against Newcastle.

Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez twice gave Newcastle the lead before Manolo Gabbiadini’s double rescued a point for the hosts at St Mary’s.

“It was a chaotic game,” Pellegrino told Sky Sports. "We conceded a couple of, in my opinion, soft goals.

"We tried to be more direct in the second half because they were compact, we put Dusan (Tadic) behind the two strikers but after we equalised we conceded really quick. After this we were in our best moment (in the match).

"We could have won the game but also we could lose the game. I didn’t like seeing this game with a lot of different moments because, in other games, we were controlling the games without scoring whereas today we scored two goals but it wasn’t enough.

“We are conceding goals in every single game at home, goals we can avoid. It is one point, it is not the best for us but in how we conceded the first and second goals the point is positive.”

The outcome of the game might have been very different had DeAndre Yedlin been handed a second yellow card for a late challenge early in the second period.

Referee Kevin Friend opted against handing the Newcastle right-back his marching orders, and Pellegrino refused to be drawn on the incident.

“I have to accept the game and the rules because I cannot have an opinion right now,” the Saints boss added.

"The game is gone, the game was really tough but with good intention from both teams.

“I have to congratulate my players’ reaction, but we have to improve essential parts of our game.”

Gabbiadini brace needs to spark life into forward, says Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino hopes striker Manolo Gabbiadini can regain confidence after the Italian’s double rescued a 2-2 draw against Newcastle.

Making his first start in over a month, Gabbiadini scored twice at St Mary’s Stadium - the second a penalty with 15 minutes remaining - to cancel out goals from Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez.

Southampton have struggled in attack of late and a return to form for Gabbiadini would be particularly timely, after hitting six goals in his first four games for the Saints last season.

‘Manolo is an important player for us,’ Pellegrino said. ‘It’s positive for his confidence but the most important thing is he was working really hard, not just for himself but for the team.’

Pellegrino avoided criticising referee Kevin Friend despite his decision not to hand Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin a second yellow card for a high and late challenge in the second half.

Southampton were grateful, however, for a late penalty after Florian Lejeune made a needless challenge on Shane Long before Gabbiadini slammed the spot-kick home.

Newcastle, who stay ninth in the Premier League table and one place above the Saints, will see this as an opportunity missed and Rafael Benitez admits he had mixed feelings at the full-time whistle.

‘After this kind of game you are disappointed because you could win but happy at the same time because you go away and get another point against a good team,’ Benitez said.

‘I like the team in a lot of things we did. I am not happy with the two goals we conceded but overall it was a good performance and a great game to watch for everyone.’

Lejeune almost made amends for his earlier error but his 89th-minute header was cleared off the line by Southampton substitute Steven Davis.

Benitez also said his side were effectively down to 10 men in the latter stages as Dwight Gayle, who had also come off the bench, was struggling with a stiff calf.

‘He was working hard and even with like 10 players he was running, wining some balls and passing,’ Benitez said. ‘But we couldn’t use his pace. It was a pity because maybe he was the solution.’

DeAndre Yedlin should have seen red against Southampton, according to pundits

DeAndre Yedlin should have seen red against Southampton, according to pundits

Newcastle United right-back DeAndre Yedlin was fortunate not to have been sent off in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Southampton, according to Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Alan Pardew.

Yedlin had already been booked for dissent when he slid in heavily on Southampton winger Nathan Redmond, with the Magpies leading 2-1 at the time.

Referee Kevin Friend let the United States international off with nothing more than a strong talking to, although both Redknapp and Pardew disagreed with the official’s decision.

“You have to say I can’t understand how he stayed on the pitch,” former Saints manager Pardew told Sky Sports after the game.

"When we see this, even at the time the fans knew he had been booked and it looked like he was going off.

"But from this angle, was his eyesight interfered with by that player, because he cannot see it really? I think it is [Isaac] Hayden and I think he is not sure.

"The skipper has gone straight over, but the referee is buying himself time as he has not seen it, that is what he is doing. And probably the linesman has not helped him and he is thinking ‘I’m not sure, let him go’.

“And in the last 10 minutes, Mauricio Pellegrino, of course, puts a wide player on who is a dribbler to run at him, and that makes sense and was a good managerial move.”

Redknapp, meanwhile, was critical of Yedlin’s decision to make the tackle in the first place when already on a yellow.

“I am a big believer in the reaction of the players and you can see there is a little bit of panic there and they think there is a problem there,” he said.

"As a manager, you are questioning why on earth is he making that decision to make that challenge and go to ground in the first place, when you have already been booked. That is the problem.

"You cannot go to ground like that, once you have been booked you have to go there, work your feet, be tight, do not let him turn.

“But do not make a challenge like that, because it will cost your team and you will end up with 10 men.”

Southampton star Dusan Tadic was pleased with his side’s character

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic said his side showed character to twice fight back and earn a 2-2 draw against Newcastle at St Mary’s.

Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez twice gave Newcastle the lead but Manolo Gabbiadini’s double, the second a late penalty, ensured honours were shared in the Premier League encounter.

Tadic told Sky Sports Premier League: 'We conceded the (second) goal but after that we showed character to come back.

He added: ‘We showed character to come back but I think we can play much better.’

Gabbiadini admitted him scoring was secondary to Southampton’s interests and when asked about his late spot-kick leveller, the Italian said he was happy to earn his side a point.

‘I am very happy but I wanted to win the game, it was very important (the penalty) but for the team, not for me,’ he said.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez was disappointed his side could not give the club’s travelling fans a win to smile about.

‘My big disappointment was for the fans. It was a pity because we couldn’t get three points so they could go back happy,’ he said.

‘It was difficult but at least we got a point. We can be better and hopefully we will be better but we have to defend better.’

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino criticised his team’s defending for both Newcastle goals.

‘We conceded a couple of, in my opinion, soft goals,’ he said.

But after equalising for a second time, the Argentinian felt his players were in control.

'We were in our best moment (in the match), we could have won the game but also we could lose the game.

'We are conceding goals in every single game at home and we can do better.

‘It is one point, it is not the best for us but in how we conceded the first and second goals the point is positive.’

Will any club crash the Premier League’s top six this season?

Show/hide article…

Will any club crash the Premier League’s top six this season?

Watford climbed up to fourth place with their 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday, but are they the club with the best chance of gatecrashing the Premier League’s top six this season?

Here, we assess some of the most likely contenders.

Don’t forget to cast your vote and leave a comment below.

Marco Silva has had a transformative impact at Watford, guiding them to four wins, three draws and only one defeat from their first eight Premier League games. It’s a far cry from last season, when they lost 10 of their final 14 games under Walter Mazzarri.

The Hornets recruited smartly in the transfer window, with Richarlison, Kiko Femenia and Nathaniel Chalobah all starting the season brightly, and Silva has introduced discipline and determination across the squad.

They showed impressive fighting spirit with their crucial late goals against Arsenal, West Brom, Swansea and Liverpool. If they can navigate such a difficult run of fixtures so impressively, why shouldn’t they set their sights high?

Everton sit 15th in the table after their difficult start to the season continued with a 1-1 draw against Brighton on Sunday. Ronald Koeman’s side have badly missed Romelu Lukaku, whose prolific start to life at Manchester United has provided a reminder of what they are missing.

But would it be foolish to rule them out of contention for a top-six finish? Everton invested heavily in their squad in the summer and have plenty of talent at their disposal. With more time to gel and another transfer window on the horizon, they might fancy their chances of climbing up the table.

Newcastle started the season as one of the favourites for the drop but with Rafael Benitez at the helm there is cause for optimism. They were pegged back by Manolo Gabbiadini’s penalty against Southampton on Sunday, but they still sit ninth after an encouraging start to the campaign.

Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie and Mikel Merino have been the standout players so far, but the man in the dugout is undoubtedly the key figure. A top six finish with Newcastle would be an extraordinary achievement - but it would not be the first time he has exceeded expectations.

Southampton are yet to get going under Mauricio Pellegrino but it is only two years since they achieved the first top six finish in their history.

Repeating that feat will require drastic improvement in an attacking sense (they have only scored seven goals in their first eight games of the season) but defensively there have been encouraging signs, with Oriol Romeu and Mario Lemina forming a strong barrier in front of the back four.

Will the 2015/16 Premier League champions climb back up the Premier League table? It has been a poor start to the campaign under Craig Shakespeare but far stranger things have happened.

Jamie Vardy has returned to goalscoring form and Harry Maguire looks like an excellent addition in central defence. If Riyad Mahrez can recapture his best form and Kelechi Iheanacho can start making an impact, then there is plenty of time to turn things around.

Monday’s clash with West Brom would be a good time to start.

Burnley look like the best of the rest at the moment. Sean Dyche continues to overachieve with his side, who sit seventh in the table after an eye-catching start. They have already played Chelsea, Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool without losing and they boast one of the best defensive records in the division.

West Brom remain difficult to beat under Tony Pulis and could move within a point of Liverpool if they beat Leicester on Monday Night Football, then there’s West Ham. Slaven Bilic’s side are yet to get going this season, but could Javier Hernandez fire them back into the top half?

Vote in our poll below and leave a comment if you think another club could do it…
