Arsenal new signing Cohen Bramall makes Gunners debut

Show/hide article…

Arsenal new boy Cohen Bramall has pulled on an Arsenal shirt for the first time after being handed his Gunners debut in the Under-23 clash against Southampton.

Bramall was snapped up by the Gunners from non-league side Hednesford Town last week and was given the nod from the start on the south coast for the Premier League 2 clash.

Steve Gatting’s side went 1-0 down when Jonathan Afolabi opened the scoring before the break, only for goals from Stephy Alvaro, Eddie Nketiah and Chris Willock to secure a 3-1 win for the Gunners.

Bramall was substituted in the 83rd minute.

This cames after the 20-year-old had been training with both the first-team and Steve Gatting’s Under-23s side since signing for the north Londoners, where has made a strong impression.

The youngster’s story captured attention after it was revealed he had been made redundant from the Bentley factory he worked in just days before securing his move to the Premier League giants.

Bramall had been spotted by Arsenal scout Brian McDermott during a trial for Sheffield Wednesday in a game against Birmingham City.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger believes his newest signing has plenty of potential.

“He is a young, promising left back who has a lack of experience at the top level but who has fantastic ingredients,” said the Gunners boss after Bramall completed his move to the Emirates.

“He has tremendous pace, a good left foot, a great desire to do well. Overall, he’s a very exciting prospect.”

U23 Report: Southampton 1-3 Arsenal

Show/hide article…

Jonathan Afolabi scored on his first start for the Under-23s, but the hosts were beaten 3-1 by Arsenal in Premier League 2 action at Staplewood Campus.

Saints edged the first half and took a deserved lead before half time through Afolabi, who produced a clinical finish on the volley inside the area.

But the Gunners hit back three times in the second half with some good finishes of their own, as Stephy Mavididi, substitute Eddie Nketiah, and Chris Willock all struck.

A young Saints team was spearheaded by scholar Afolabi, who was flanked in attack by Tyreke Johnson and Lloyd Isgrove.

Johnson tried to force the first opening in the fifth minute when he took on the Arsenal backline after dispossessing Krystian Bielik, but couldn’t quite get his shot on target from an acute angle.

Saints had the better of the early openings, with Isgrove also going close when he latched on to Thomas O’Connor’s long pass before hitting a low shot which was deflected narrowly wide.

At the other end, Arsenal saw plenty of the ball, with Reiss Nelson frequently involved during the opening exchanges.

He had the Gunners’ first attempt on goal in the 19th minute when he played a one-two with Stephy Mavididi and then curled a shot towards goal, but Adam Parkes got down to save it on his left side.

Parkes was called upon again when Ben Sheaf curled a free-kick around the wall, which the goalkeeper got across well to, as he pushed the ball away at the right post.

Saints then upped the ante though, and had the ball in the net on 36 minutes when Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom inadvertently headed through his own net, but the match official disallowed the goal for a foul.

Soon after, Slattery teed up Jake Vokins for a rasping effort from the edge of the area, which Arsenal ‘keeper Hugo Keto had to push away, but from the resulting corner, the hosts opened the scoring.

It arrived when a nod down from Florin Gardos fell invitingly for Afolabi inside the area, and he produced an unerring finish on the volley, which flew in via a deflection to give Saints the lead.

That advantage was held until half time which the hosts had deserved on the balance of play.

Arsenal applied the pressure at the start of the second 45 and drew a half chance when captain Krystian Bielik headed an awkward chance behind him towards goal, but it was comfortable for Adam Parkes.

They went even closer when Ainsley Maitland-Niles picked out Chris Willock whose shot hit the base of the post, but the equaliser would eventually follow just before the hour.

It came from Mavididi on 59 minutes when he got the ball on the right side of the area, and arrowed a low finish into the bottom left corner.

Saints responded by bringing on Ryan Seager in place of Afolabi, but Arsenal remained rampant, with Mavididi charging forward before running out of space to get a shot in from a tight angle.

Slattery had Saints’ first real chance of the half on 69 minutes when he struck a free-kick from the left side of the area which almost dipped in at the far post, but Keto did enough to push the ball out for a corner.

Willock tested Parkes after a mazy run on the left, which the Saints stopper was equal to, but Arsenal swung the match in their favour when substitute Eddie Nketiah on for Akpom, beat the onrushing Parkes to a loose ball outside of the area, and rolled in for 2-1.

Saints sought an instant response when Gardos flicked a header narrowly wide, but the Gunners sealed their win on 83 minutes when Willock broke into the box and curled a low shot beyond Parkes to wrap it up.

Cohen Bramall’s Arsenal debut rated

Show/hide article…

A week after completing a dream move to Arsenal , Cohen Bramall made his first appearance in a Gunners shirt on Monday night, turning out for the Under-23 side in a 3-1 away win at Southampton.

Bramall was signed from non-league side Hednesford Town, days after being made redundant from his job in a Bentley factory and lined up on the left-hand side of defence for Steve Gatting’s side, report football.london .

The 20-year-old, who last month was playing non-league football for Hednesford Town, lined up on the left hand side of defence for Steve Gatting’s side.

After going behind in the first half, goals from Stephy Mavididi, Eddie Nketiah and Chris Willock saw the Gunners fight back to take all three points in the Premier League 2 fixture.

Here’s how Bramall fared during the encounter at Southampton’s Staplewood Training Ground.

Bramall was in the game inside the opening two minutes and his first real involvement was very promising,

He got up to support the attack and when he received possession just outside the box, his first thought was to knock the ball past his full-back and drive into the penalty area.

It was positive play and it was also the first glimpse we got of his impressive turn of pace. Saints did manage to get the ball away but it was good to see him start off on the front foot.

The game then switched over to the Arsenal right for the next 10 minutes, with Reiss Nelson looking impressive. The next time we saw Bramall was when he played his part in a quick break, his clever pass found Nelson but the shot was blocked.

The first real sign of nervousness for Bramall came in the 16th minute when he gifted possession away with a poor right-footed pass.

His reaction was to cover his face with his hands, that’s something that he’ll need to cut out from his game. Everyone makes mistakes, you shouldn’t let your head drop when it happens to you.

That incident seemed to lead to a loss of confidence in the youngster - he spent the next 15 minutes struggling with his passing, with more than one simple ball going astray.

He did win one crunching challenge, however, which was good to see. He showed no fear when the ball was there to be won.

With Southampton getting on top in the latter stages of the half, Bramall was put under increasing pressure deep inside his own half.

He was robbed of possession on 39 minutes and the hosts created an opportunity for Jake Vokins, whose powerful shot was well saved by Hugo Keto.

But Saints did take the lead when the resulting corner wasn’t cleared and Jonathan Afolabi thundered a finish into the roof of the net.

It was a deserved goal - but Bramall ended the half well with a fine run and cross which Southampton did well to clear in stoppage time.

Arsenal stepped up the pressure in the first 15 minutes of the second half - but most of the play came down the right.

Bramall did not see much of the ball as the pressure increased on the home side’s defence.

The Gunners took advantage of their good spell when Stephy Mavididi levelled things up with a smart finish on the hour mark.

After a quite period in the game, Bramall burst back into life on the 70 minute mark.

He was heavily involved in a fine move down the left, having a series of touches before Arsenal worked a shooting position for Willock.

The shot was saved comfortably but it was a good piece of play from the visitors, one that Bramall was at the heart of.

Arsenal dominated the closing stages of the contest and two quick goals from Eddie Nketiah and Chris Willock earned them all three points.

Bramall was replaced on 83 minutes by Josh Dasilva.

Bramall will be very happy with his first showing in an Arsenal shirt.

He will no doubt have been nervous and that did show on a couple of occasions - but all in all it was a solid display.

He always tried to be positive when in possession and showed flashes of his pace when he did find some space down the left.

Bramall’s passing was a bit suspect at times and that will need to improve, but given the rapid rise in quality he is having to adapt to, he delivered a decent display.

Jaïdi: Goals came from mistakes

Show/hide article…

Radhi Jaïdi felt Southampton’s Under-23s made hard work for themselves after letting a 1-0 lead slip in their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in Premier League 2 action on Monday.

Saints took a first half lead through Jonathan Afolabi’s well-taken strike for an advantage which they held until half time, but a second-half fight-back from the visitors saw the Gunners take all three points.

It was the manner in which the hosts conceded the goals though, which left U23s assistant coach Jaïdi frustrated.

“There’s disappointment because when you go into the changing room at half time and you’re winning 1-0 we said to the boys that they need to be right and to keep doing the right stuff that we had done in the first half with distances and not defending deep.

“We were getting into good recovery positions with some good interceptions. We dealt with their movement and rotation in the wide areas through their seven and eleven when they came on, so you expected us to stay on the front foot and create more chances to take control of the game, but it didn’t happen – we conceded a really sloppy goal – and I think some of the boys’ individual performances especially in the second half, was less, and that’s what we had to deal with.”

The visitors struck all three goals inside the last half hour of play, but Jaïdi thought even at 2-1 down, there was an opportunity for his side.

“I don’t think Arsenal were better than we expected, so it was all about us to concede three goals,” he said.

“All three goals were our mistakes. At 2-1 you expect a reaction, but we’ve given away a third goal and that’s killed us in the last ten minutes.

“You have to accept it and it’s a learning curve for some of the younger boys, but we need to keep working with them, keep de-briefing with all the staff to repair it, and hopefully on Friday which is not far away, we will be competing and challenging again.”

City to target new goalkeeper in the summer

Show/hide article…

Manchester City will be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer as the pressure grows on under-fire Claudio Bravo.

The Chile international was beaten by all four shots he faced at Everton on Sunday when City’s Premier League title hopes were dealt a hammer blow in Pep Guardiola’s worst ever defeat as a coach.

Bravo has been criticised for his performances since signing from Barcelona for £15.4million in August following Guardiola’s surprise decision to offload Joe Hart.

With second-choice keeper Willy Caballero expected to leave when his contract runs out at the end of the season, City must decide whether to sign another understudy for Bravo or bring in a new No 1 ahead of him.

The club have a £13.2m buyback option on Geronimo Rulli, the 24-year-old Argentinian who joined City for £4m last summer but was sold to Real Sociedad after a loan spell at the Spanish club.

They have also been monitoring Benfica’s Ederson and Sunderland’s England Under 21 international Jordan Pickford.

It is understood that Barcelona’s other keeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, was Guardiola’s first choice before he signed Bravo from his old club.

The Chilean was brought to the Etihad for his distribution skills but has come under fire for his shot- stopping ability. From the last 22 shots he has faced, Bravo has conceded 14 goals.

Sportsmail columnist Jamie Carragher said on Sky on Monday night: ‘They’ve got a goalkeeper nowhere near good enough.

'Pep Guardiola and that club need to be looking for another goalkeeper for next season, or bring Joe Hart back, because if Pep wants to win the Champions League or the League, you won’t win it with that goalkeeper.’

England goalkeeper Hart, who is under contract at City until 2019, will return in the summer from his season-long loan at Torino but is unlikely to have any future under Guardiola.

City will be looking to strengthen in a number of other positions this summer, with up to six new signings.

Guardiola will bring in at least one centre back and City are linked with Southampton duo Virgil van Dijk and Jose Fonte, as well as Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte.

City are also expected to sign two full backs, although they accept that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is unlikely to entertain offers for Kyle Walker and Danny Rose.

A striker and midfielder will also be on Guardiola’s shopping list as he looks to overhaul his squad. City trail leaders Chelsea by 10 points following the 4-0 defeat at Goodison Park, after which Guardiola all but conceded that the title has gone.

VOTE: Best Premier League overhead kicks

Show/hide article…

Following Andy Carroll’s brilliant strike against Crystal Palace the Monday Night Football looked back through the Premier League archives to find the best overhead kicks.

Jamie Carragher was joined by Thierry Henry on a special edition of Monday Night Football and the duo picked their favourite overhead kicks from the Premier League era.

Carragher had no hesitation in plumping for Carroll’s super strike in West Ham’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

When asked whether we hadd seen the goal of the season from Carroll on Saturday, Carragher said: "I’m thinking of Dimitri Payet’s goal, the strikes from Olivier Giroud and Henrikh Mkhitaryan but I would go with Andy Carroll.

“I did think it was Giroud’s goal against Crystal Palace but now I’m going for Carroll.”

Henry found the decision much harder, choosing Wayne Rooney’s brilliant goal from the 2011 Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

The pundits have had their say, but now it’s your turn! Hit play on the video above to watch the overhead kicks before voting for your favourite in our poll.
