Stat Pack: Saints vs Norwich

Show/hide article…

Ahead of Wednesday night’s Emirates FA Cup third round replay, southamptonfc.com looks at some of the key stats as Southampton prepare to welcome Norwich City to St Mary’s.

Saints head into Wednesday night’s game having progressed from 13 of their last 16 FA Cup replays against teams from a lower division.

Norwich, meanwhile, will be looking for just their second win in their last 15 FA Cup games against Premier League opposition (D3, L11). A 2-1 win against West Brom in January 2012 was their last success.

Southampton have scored in all but one of their last 21 FA Cup matches.

Norwich City have failed to win any of their last three replays in the competition, last winning one in February 2007, when they beat Blackpool 3-2.

Norwich City’s last visit to St Mary’s ended in a 3-0 win for Southampton, as Graziano Pellè scored before a brace from Dušan Tadić in the second half sealed a comfortable victory.

Harry Lewis will be hoping to make his home debut for Southampton, having made his first appearance for the club in the 2-2 draw at Carrow Road earlier this month.

Saints completed 517 passes, with an accuracy rating of 82%, against Norwich in the game at Carrow Road, while the hosts made just 312, with a success rate of 679%.

The two sides played out an FA Cup replay in March 1992, with Norwich City winning 2-1 after a 0-0 draw in the first game at The Dell.

Southampton have not conceded to Norwich City in each of their last three FA Cup home games against the Canaries.

Cohen Bramall set for Arsenal debut in U23 clash

Show/hide article…

New Arsenal signing Cohen Bramall is set to make his Gunners debut on Monday evening.

The January signing has been training with the Gunners’ Under-23 squad and the first-team since he completed his fairytale switch from non-league Hednesford Town earlier this month, report football.london .

The 20-year-old has made a big impression behind the scenes and football.london understands that he has been pencilled in to start tonight’s U23s Premier League 2 match at Southampton.

The Gunners signed Bramall from Henesord last week after the left-back completed a successful two-day trial last month.

His story captured the nation after it was revealed he was made redundant from a Bentley factory just a few days before completing his switch to the Emirates.

He had been spotted by Gunners scout Brian McDermott while on trial for Sheffield Wednesday in a match against Birmingham City.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said: “He is a young, promising left back who has a lack of experience at the top level but who has fantastic ingredients.

“He has tremendous pace, a good left foot, a great desire to do well. Overall, he’s a very exciting prospect.”

Pep Guardiola plots major Manchester City clear-out after difficult first season goes from bad to worse

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola is planning to rip up his Manchester City squad and bring in as many as six new players, with Ryan Bertrand emerging as a surprise summer target. The City manager threw in the towel in the title race on Sunday after their season hit a new low with a 4-0 defeat at Everton that left them 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea and once again highlighted the deficiencies in the squad Guardiola inherited last summer.

The defence is the biggest concern and City could even try to address some of the problems in the final two weeks of this month’s transfer window, with Guardiola keen to make additions, before carrying out major surgery in the summer. Guardiola is understood to want two new full-backs, two central defenders, a midfielder and another forward on top of Gabriel Jesus, who is still waiting to be formally registered following his £27 million move from Palmeiras.

City may also move for another goalkeeper with Willy Caballero out of contract in the summer, although it remains to be seen if the manager seeks another back-up to Claudio Bravo or considers moving for a new No. 1 given the Chilean’s struggles so far.

It is possible City could attempt a double swoop on Southampton at the end of the season, with centre-half Virgil van Dijk already on their radar and left-back Bertrand highly rated by the club. Bertrand would fill a homegrown player slot for City and has already proved he can roam up and down the flank, as Guardiola demands from his full-backs. The 27-year-old joined Southampton from Chelsea and has matured into one of the best left-backs in the country along with Danny Rose, whom Tottenham Hotspur will not sell, despite Guardiola being an admirer of him and fellow Spurs full-back Kyle Walker.

The statistics that prove Jurgen Klopp is wrong about Man United and Liverpool

Show/hide article…

JURGEN KLOPP appeared to criticise Manchester United for long-ball football at Old Trafford yesterday - but these stats show the Red Devils play fewer long balls than his team!

Looking at every Premier League side’s number of long balls played this season, United have only played 1,345 across their 21 games so far - the fourth least in the league.

Liverpool on the other hand, rank much higher up the table and have played 67 more long balls than Jose Mourinho’s men this season.
