Chelsea failed to win for the fourth match in a row in all competitions as they scraped a 0-0 draw against 10-man Leicester on Saturday.

Bakary Sako’s first-half goal was enough to continue Crystal Palace’s Premier League resurgence as they ground out a narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley at Selhurst Park.

West Ham produced a devastating second-half display to thump Huddersfield 4-1, with Manuel Lanzini scoring twice to give David Moyes the 200th Premier League win of his managerial career.

Joselu came off the bench to deny bottom-club Swansea a much-needed victory and earn Newcastle a point from a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.

Jonny Evans and Craig Dawson both scored headers to hand Alan Pardew his first Premier League win as West Brom manager in a 2-0 victory against Brighton.

Harry Kane scored twice in Tottenham’s 4-0 win against Everton on Saturday evening to become the club’s top all-time Premier League goalscorer.

Watford 2-2 Southampton: Watch highlights as late goal earns Hornets a point

Show/hide article…

The midfielder diverted the ball in with his arm a minute before full-time as Watford came from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw.

James Ward-Prowse had scored twice in the first half before Andre Gray pulled one back - and Saints were crestfallen when Doucoure’s equaliser was allowed to stand.

He stooped to nod into the net - but the ball missed his head and he swept it home with his arm.

Southampton protested long and hard to referee Roger East but to no avail, with a draw leaving them just one point above the relegation zone.

Watford’s Troy Deeney admits VAR would have ruled out equaliser

Show/hide article…

Troy Deeney admitted Watford’s controversial equaliser against Southampton would not have stood if a Video Assistant Referee had been in attendance.

Abdoulaye Doucoure secured a 2-2 draw for the Hornets with a blatant handball in the final minute.

The French midfielder stooped to nod Deeney’s header back across goal into the net – but the ball missed his head and he swept it home with his hand.

BBC pundit Martin Keown said Doucoure had “done a Maradona,” and even Watford skipper Deeney admitted his side were fortunate.

The new VAR system has had a fairly gentle introduction in the past week, but it would have been the centre of attention at Vicarage Road.

“If VAR had come in we probably wouldn’t get that but today we got it. It’s the luck of the draw,” Deeney told Sky Sports. Yet how referee Roger East and linesman Derek Eaton missed Doucoure’s sucker punch was a mystery.

Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino was remarkably restrained given the decision had cost his side a first Premier League win in 10 matches.

“My feeling is like the players, we are a little bit sad,” he said. "The last goal is something that surprised me because in the Premier League the level of referees is good. It’s clear (handball).

"Everybody makes mistakes but the problem is at this level you have a lot to play for so we are disappointed.

“From the bench it is more difficult to see but the referee and the linesman are closer. I imagine the referee is not happy now.”

A sheepish Marco Silva, the Watford boss, admitted: “I don’t need to talk about the goal. I think everybody can see. It’s something that can happen.”

Southampton, who kicked off only outside the relegation zone on goal difference, were on the verge of a much-needed win after two first-half goals from James Ward-Prowse.

The midfielder tucked in Shane Long’s cut-back after 21 minutes and doubled the lead after more superb work from the industrious Long.

The striker raced 60 yards along the touchline to beat Molla Wague to a clearance and crossed for Dusan Tadic, who laid the ball off for Ward-Prowse to fire home.

Andre Gray pulled one back before the hour when he bundled in the rebound after Daryl Janmaat’s shot was tipped on to the crossbar by Alex McCarthy.

Then came the late drama which prevented Watford from slipping to a seventh defeat in their last eight matches.

“I think we deserved the result,” added Silva. "It’s true we did well in the second half. The first half was really bad but we redressed that balance.

“We didn’t play with the right mentality or attitude in the first half. In the second we scored two goals and could have scored more. It’s an important moment for us.”

WATCH: Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure scores equaliser against Southampton with hand

Show/hide article…

Watford earned a point against Southampton thanks to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s late handballed goal.

The midfielder pushed the ball into the net after it missed his head as Alex McCarthy rushed out to stop him.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino and Watford striker Troy Deeney both said the goal should not have stood but, unfortunately for the visitors, it did.

Watford had come from two goals down after James Ward-Prowse’s double in the first-half but an Andre Gray header and Doucoure’s goal, the game ended 2-2.

Pellegrino defends Saints tactics

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino defended his second half tactics as Saints let a two-goal lead slip to draw with Watford.

Saints put in a terrific first half display to give themselves a cushion at the break thanks to two well taken goals from James Ward-Prowse.

However, it all changed in the second period as Watford introduced Troy Deeney and went more direct.

Pellegrino dropped Oriol Romeu deeper to try and handle the aerial threat, and Saints struggled to press up the field, and surrendered momentum in the game.

They were eventually left ruing a late equaliser that was a handball from Abdoulaye Doucoure that was missed by the officials.

“When you decide to play direct maybe we did something normal to put Oriol in front of the back four,” said Pellegrino.

“We don’t have somebody else to press the centre back for example because Tadic plays a little bit deep.

“Why? Because in this aspect in the physical battle they are stronger than us and you have to do it.

“We have to manage the ball when we regain it. We gave it away and couldn’t be danger in counter attack when we have possibilities.

“I think most of the time we control well the direct balls and for this reason it was hard.”

One positive from the game was the brace from Ward-Prowse.

The midfielder has long been criticised for not bringing enough goals to supplement his all-round abilities.

However, he has shown a newfound clinical streak in the penalty area.

Ward-Prowse converted what proved to be the winner in the FA Cup third round tie with Fulham, and then followed it up with the double against Watford.

“For sure, James is a player that has been fighting a lot for this presence, never giving up, always positive for the squad,” said Pellegrino.

“The goals is something that is a plus and hopefully everybody can help the team with this extra.”

There were a couple of surprises in Pellegrino’s squad.

Nathan Redmond was left at home with Pellegrino confirming simply that it was a “tactical decision.”

Also missing was Maya Yoshida, who picked up a hamstring injury.

Saints are hopeful it isn’t serious and that he will be available to face Tottenham at St Mary’s next Sunday.

“Hopefully next week he will be ready,” confirmed Pellegrino. “This is our prediction right now.

“When you are injured you know when it starts but never know when he will be ready.”

Why Virgil van Dijk only has his first name on his shirt revealed

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk’s maternal uncle has revealed why the Liverpool defender only uses his first name on the back of his shirt.

The Dutch international moved to Anfield earlier this month after the Reds paid Southampton £75million to make him the world’s most expensive defender.

He proudly held up his new shirt at the unveiling, which simply bore the name ‘Virgil’.

Van Dijk’s decision left many fans confused, with some having even jumped the gun by purchasing ‘Van Dijk’ shirts before the deal was announced.

But the 26-year-old’s uncle told the Sun the decision is the result of a family feud.

“Virgil has done amazingly well to be such a success given the ups and downs there have been in his family, said Steven Fo Sieeuw.

“His dad split with his mother and his three children, including Virgil, found it hard to forgive him for that.

“The truth is his dad was not around for so many important years and it is his mother who is the real hero of this story.

“You don’t take your dad’s name off your shirt without a reason and Virgil has made it very clear how he feels.”
