Mauricio Pellegrino wants VAR fast-tracked into the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino wants video technology to be fast-tracked into the Premier League.

Saints were victims of a blatant injustice on Saturday when Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure scored a last-minute equaliser with his hand.

The incident was missed by referee Roger East and assistant Derek Eaton - and in fairness to the officials by most in attendance at Vicarage Road.

But television replays showed a clear handball which the new Video Assistant Referee system - trialled last week in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup - would have picked up instantly.

The VAR debate rumbles on but if ever there was a case for it to be implemented then this was it.

Even Watford captain Troy Deeney admitted the goal would have been disallowed had technology been used.

And Pellegrino said: 'I’ve never seen this type of mistake in the Premier League before. To have this injustice is really hard.

'I think we have to try and analyse if it’s possible to help the sport to make better decisions, even for the referee.

'We have to try using video technology in the Premier League.

‘In every single team sport technology helps us to make better decisions. Why not football?’

It was hard to swallow for Southampton, who were on the verge of a first win in 10 league matches thanks to two first-half goals from James Ward-Prowse.

But Andre Gray pulled one back just before the hour and the late controversy prevented Watford from slipping to a seventh defeat in their last eight matches.

Hornets winger Roberto Pereyra was grateful for their huge slice of luck.

‘We managed to get a point which will allow us to get more confidence for the next games,’ he told the club’s official website.

‘We think they will all be difficult matches from now until May.’

Jaïdi previews Villa tie

Show/hide article…

A return to action for talented duo Jake Hesketh and Josh Sims has aided squad selection, but Jaïdi’s youngsters will have to overcome a lack of competitive match minutes, after a brief festive break and the late postponement of last week’s Blackburn clash.

Staplewood Campus will now host Aston Villa tonight, with three valuable Premier League 2 points on offer, as lead coach Jaïdi reiterated his assurance in Southampton’s young charges, who will be looking to improve on their current position of ninth in the standings.

“I’m always confident with the players we have," he said.

“We have a bigger squad now, with the return of Josh Sims and Jake Hesketh. Both have been training with the first-team, but we try to give them some game time to get them back to the right level after injury - they always have a positive impact on the 23s setup. That brings confidence.

“The ideal would be to have played last Monday, but you don’t always get the perfect scenario before a game. The boys are always working hard, though.”

A disappointing away trip in the reverse of this fixture, with Villa winning 4-0 in September, has also prompted Jaïdi to ask for a big response.

“We expect a reaction, and for the boys to stand up to the challenge," he said. "We always play against teams who are motivated when they travel here, so we need to be on top of our game and collecting points to put in our pockets.”

Mauricio Pellegrino calls for VAR to be fast-tracked into Premier League

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has called for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to be fast-tracked into the Premier League.

Southampton conceded a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday which came off Abdoulaye Doucoure’s hand.

The infringement was missed by referee Roger East and his officials but television replays showed the goal would not have stood had VAR been in use - something that was trialled in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this week.

Pellegrino said: "I’ve never seen this type of mistake in the Premier League before. To have this injustice is really hard.

"I think we have to try and analyse if it’s possible to help the sport to make better decisions, even for the referee.

"We have to try using video technology in the Premier League. In every single team sport technology helps us to make better decisions.

“Why not [in] football?”

Watford captain Troy Deeney admitted in his post-match interview that the goal would have been disallowed had the technology - used to decide whether a goal should stand, whether a player deserves a straight red card, whether a penalty should be awarded and in cases of mistaken identity - been on offer.

“It’s one of them. They’ll feel like it’s a loss,” Deeney told Sky Sports.

“VAR comes in we probably wouldn’t get that but we got it. It’s the luck of the draw.”

Southampton, who led 2-0 at half-time, would have secured their first victory in 10 games but were forced to settle for a point which leaves them sitting one point above the relegation zone.

Doucoure deliberately fooled the referee - cheating is the real issue

Show/hide article…

When Abdoulaye Doucoure scored his first Watford goal, against Southampton at Vicarage Road last March, it also came in added time, but that one was scored with his foot, not his hand.

The one he punched into the goal to deny Southampton victory will be remembered for longer and is already been viewed as evidence of the need for widespread use of the video referee system.

Certainly the timing of this controversy is perfect for those in the game who would have every single decision checked, rechecked and then checked again. Those must be the same people who have no interest in getting home at night.

Yet there is another way to look at this and that is from the perspective of the player. Doucoure deliberately deceived the officials in this instance.

Does that make him a cheat? At the very least, it makes him a footballer prepared to cheat and players like him are a far greater blight on our game than referees and assistants who occasionally get things wrong.

In choosing to nudge the ball into the goal with his arm rather than attempt to do so legally, Doucoure cheated and showed a lack of courage. By using his arm, he avoided the risk of a collision with the Southampton goalkeeper. So this doesn’t reflect well on him, but nor does it on our sense of priorities.
