There’s always that one specific side they can never seem to beat. Even when your heroes seem set to register a victory, defeat to your bogey team will come out of nowhere.

It’s one of those strange unwritten laws of football which cannot be explained, even by the most scientific of minds at OPTA and beyond.

But which Premier League club does your favourite team have the highest loss rate against?

Those with the biggest brains at mybonuscode.co.uk have been crunching the numbers and you can find out the results by clicking the right arrow above…

Watford v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Watford captain Troy Deeney is available in the league for the first time since serving a four-match ban.

Head coach Marco Silva remains without Younes Kaboul, Craig Cathcart, Isaac Success, Miguel Britos, Kiko Femenia, Will Hughes and Nathaniel Chalobah.

Southampton defenders Wesley Hoedt, Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied have all returned to training after injuries and could be involved.

Alistair Mann: "These two sides share the unwanted distinction of being the Premier League’s bottom two in the form table.

"Watford come into the weekend having lost six of their last seven Premier League games, while Southampton haven’t won any of their last nine.

"The Hornets, whose season began so optimistically, are now in danger of enduring one of struggle.

“Though they begin the weekend in the top half of the table, another defeat may well change the dynamics of their situation considerably, particularly against a team who are only above the drop zone on goal difference.”

Watford head coach Marco Silva pays tribute to Graham Taylor on the first anniversary of the former Hornets manager’s death: "It’s a really important day for the club, for us, for the fans and for his family as well.

"What he achieved at this club was amazing. He built the club with Sir Elton John and he is really important for us as a club.

“Each club I’m working at I like to understand the story of the club, what happened in the past and to respect the story and respect important persons in the club’s history.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "I feel in the past three games I have been watching good things, both inside the dressing room and on and off the pitch, in the way I would like us to represent our club.

"Obviously, we’re miles away in terms of results, but I think this difficult moment is a really, really positive one aside from all the negatives.

“This game for us is massive, every single game from now will be really important. There’s still a long way to go until the end of the season, but we have to start from Saturday.”

Saints need to do something to stop their slide; they are only above the relegation zone on goal difference, and a draw would probably be a decent result for them. They really need a win, though.

Mauricio Pellegrino and Marco Silva set to collide in the line of fire

Show/hide article…

The first managerial sacking of the season seems a long time ago now, a fuzzy image of chaos at Crystal Palace, Frank de Boer’s furrowed brow watching intently as Wayne Hennessey and Joel Ward attempt a one-two in their own box.

De Boer lasted four league matches, and his demise prompted Leicester’s Craig Shakespeare to say that top-flight managers are always four games from a crisis. As if the point needed proving, four games after De Boer’s exit Shakespeare went too.

The two teams at the foot of the Premier League’s form-table meet on Saturday when Southampton face Watford at Vicarage Road. Over their last six games they have won a combined five points from a possible 36; viewed through football’s narrow lens, Mauricio Pellegrino and Marco Silva must both be considered in the line of fire right now, and Saturday’s squabble will likely see one or the other pushed into further trouble.

The situation is particularly perilous for Pellegrino, partly due to Watford’s early-season excellence, as well as Silva’s commitment to energised attacking football, two factors which have put plenty of credit in the bank and which cannot be said of his counterpart’s defensively calibrated team.

It is also down to the context around the Argentine’s tenure. Southampton acted as a springboard for his predecessors Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman, and those successes now provide stark contrast to the club’s current plight. The same can be said of comparisons with his immediate predecessor, Claude Puel, who has reenergised Leicester after Shakespeare’s sacking; Saints’ eighth-place finish under Puel last season now seems unachievable.

Instead Pellegrino is in a relegation battle, a key player has departed for Liverpool and his stock is diminishing. Even in Southampton’s FA Cup victory over Fulham, he was booed by Saints supporters over a substitution and greeted with refrains of “You don’t know what you’re doing”.

Years of talent poaching have finally taken their toll at St Mary’s and there is a case for investment in just about every department, bar left-back. Pellegrino does have money to spend following the sale of Virgil van Dijk, but the combination of a well-publicised injection of funds, a struggling team and a notoriously challenging mid-season market are not conducive to bargain hunting – especially when you are trying to persuade players to join a relegation fight.

“We have got a couple of targets,” Pellegrino said on Thursday. “The priority is to try to help especially in the final third. Charlie [Austin] will be out [for two months] and we don’t have this profile in this squad.

“Every single day we talk about how the market is working and how the club is looking to bring people not just for this five months, but obviously we want to bring people who are committed to our process to make the club better.

“But the market is really difficult. It’s about negotiation. We can control our side but we cannot control the other people.”

Watford have their own problems, predominantly around a raft of medium-term injuries. On Thursday the club’s technical director, Filippo Giraldi, said they would try to resist dipping into what he called the ‘emergency market’. Instead he will trust Silva to reverse the club’s downturn, a lull which seemed to coincide with speculation linking the Portuguese with a move to Goodison Park.

Watford remain 10th in the league but they have been standing still for weeks and are now only five points above the bottom three. Silva’s reputation has grown immeasurably since the relatively unknown Portuguese arrived at Hull a year ago to howls of horror from Sky Sports’ Paul Merson and Phil Thompson, who said a Premier League job was like “manna from heaven” for a man with Silva’s CV.

He has made those comments look pretty foolish but he will also know that the Pozzo family will not hesitate to step in. They are already on to their ninth manager in a five-year spell at the club and there is no sign that Silva will be given more leeway than the rest.

It is surely in the opposite dugout, however, where the most pressure will be felt when the form-table’s bottom clubs meet on Saturday. “The biggest risk in football is to work in football,” Pellegrino said. “The result is everything.” That notion feels apt as he and Silva aim to avoid becoming the next Premier League crisis.

Watford v Southampton preview: Saints in need of morale-boosting win at Vicarage Road

Watford v Southampton preview: Saints in need of morale-boosting win at Vicarage Road

Both Watford and Southampton head into the weekend low on confidence and in need of three points as they meet at Vicarage Road.

Watford have found points hard to come by of late with only one victory in their last nine games - against Leicester City on Boxing Day, although they have dropped just two places in the Premier League during that period.

The Saints, though, are winless in their last nine outings, a dreadful run which has poured the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Watford won the reverse fixture 2-0 at St Mary’s in September when Abdoulaye Doucoure and Daryl Janmaat scored - this was the visitors’ only victory in the last six top-flight meetings between the two.

Watford captain Troy Deeney is available to face the Saints having served a four-game ban.

However, head coach Marco Silva remains without the inured Younes Kaboul, Craig Cathcart, Isaac Success, Miguel Britos, Kiko Femenia, Will Hughes and Nathaniel Chalobah.

Southampton, meanwhile, could welcome back defenders Wesley Hoedt, Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied at Vicarage Road.

Hoedt (concussion), Soares (hamstring) and Pied (leg) have all returned to training and their fitness will be assessed before kick-off.

Striker Charlie Austin, though, remains on the sidelines with a hamstring problem.

Watford’s only home Premier League victory against Southampton came in their very first such meeting against them - winning 3-2 back in December 1999 (D1 L1 since).

Saints haven’t lost both league meetings against Watford in a season since the 2007-08 Championship campaign.

There have been 34 goals scored in the last eight meetings between these sides at Vicarage Road in all competitions (19 for Watford, 15 for Southampton), at an average of over four per game.

Watford have lost six of their last seven Premier League games, winning the other against Leicester.

Wow, another tough one! Watford are on a glass mountain with moccasin slippers! They were on the verge of the top four not too long ago and now, if they lose this game, they are really in trouble. If you take away that win against Leicester they would be in deep trouble. Given the form of these two sides, either of them could win and you wouldn’t be shocked, but I’m going for a draw.

Saints U23s reach Southampton FA Senior Cup semi-finals

Show/hide article…

Saints U23s saw off a young Winchester City side to reach the semi-finals of the Southampton FA Senior Cup.

Former Arsenal winger Nathan Tella gave Saints a 16th-minute lead with a clinical left-footer into the far corner.

But a Citizens side including 11 teenagers (four of whom are only 16) acquitted themselves well.

Captain Kieran Winman and first-team player-manager Craig Davis marshalled a fine defensive effort against a Saints attack including Olufela Olomola, who has been playing in League Two for Yeovil most of the season.

Olomola was unfortunate to see his far-post header come back off the post from Tom O’Connor’s inswinging corner in the 31st minute.

But other than pick the ball out of the net, City goalkeeper Josh Toombs had little to do before twice saving well from O’Connor at the end of the first half.

When the midfielder tried to whip a free kick in at the near post, Toombs was more than equal to it.

Saints were without midfielder Armani Little, but Tyreke Johnson impressed after replacing fellow winger Tella at half-time.

He had a goal disallowed early in the second half but was a constant threat down the left flank with his pace and trickery.

Number ten Callum Slattery should have done better than shank a Johnson cross over the bar.

But Johnson soon scored the first of two goals in three minutes midway through the second half. He doubled Saints lead when he tapped in Siph Mdalose’s pass at the far post.

Two minutes later, Mdalose capitalised from inside the area when City striker Simba Mlambo lost his footing.

Johnson did his best to create more opportunities. Davis scooped another cross over the bar from inside the six-yard box and an even better delivery somehow evaded Olomola and sub Bailey Owen as it flashed across the face of goal.

Johnson was unfortunate not to score a wonderful solo goal when a fine run ended with a left-footer just beyond the far post.

Olomola hit the woodwork for the second time when, having been denied by Toombs in a one-on-one, his lob came back off the right-hand upright.

The other quarter-finals (Team Solent v Blackfield & Langley, Netley Central Sports FC v Lymington Town and Sholing v Hamble Club) are being played at the beginning of next week.
