Mauricio Pellegrino insists his squad are ready to fight for survival

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insists his Southampton squad are ready to roll up their sleeves and fight their way clear of relegation.

An alarming run of nine matches without a win has seen Saints tumble to 17th, outside the drop zone on goal difference alone.

But Pellegrino also knows just a couple of wins - starting at Watford on Saturday - will leave them in a far healthier position.

‘Are the players aware? Yes for sure, everybody knows and everybody is conscious now that we are in a difficult situation,’ said the Saints boss.

'But in one week with two games everything can change.

'In the Premier League last season from eighth to 17th the gap was six points. Now between 17th and number 10 it is more or less the same.

‘Maybe in two or three weeks’ time we can talk about other feelings.

'Obviously we are conscious of this situation but I have got a good feeling because I have got good players.

‘My players are conscious we are in a position we have to change, on and off the pitch.’

Saints could find themselves in the bottom three for the first time this season if Watford repeat their victory at St Mary’s in September.

But Pellegrino saw signs of recovery when his side beat Championship side Fulham 1-0 in the FA Cup last weekend to recapture that winning feeling.

‘I have a good feeling that we are working really well,’ he added.

'We are better prepared than before and we want to move one step forward from Fulham and it’s a nice opportunity for us.

'The bottom three? It’s important to try to get a good result away, and after that think about the performance and what we have to do on the pitch.

‘That for me is the most important now.’

Pellegrino could welcome back fit-again defenders Wesley Hoedt, Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied at Vicarage Road.

On the Road: Watford

Show/hide article…

Away fans are housed in the Vicarage Road Stand at one end of the ground behind the goal. Saints have been given an allocation of 2,224 tickets.

Please note – the front row at Vicarage Road is Row BB – Row A is the 11th row from the front of the stand. The vomitories are located approximately three-quarters of the way back in the stand. For supporters who wish to walk as few steps as possible, Row N is most ideally suited.

Disabled supporters should aim for the ‘Vicarage Roadie’ Information Point next to the Hornets Shop. Supporters should then approach Watford’s ‘Vicarage Roadies’ match day meet and greet team, who are dressed in bright green hi-vis jackets and will be stationed outside the stadium from 1pm onwards on the day. The ‘Roadies’ team will be happy to escort supporters to the appropriate accessible entrances and on to the away sections of the stadium.

Please be aware that due to restricted concourse space, alcohol is only served pre-match and is not available at half-time.

Getting There By Car

Leave the M25 at junction 19 and take the A411 towards Watford. On nearing the town centre you will reach two roundabouts. Go straight on when you approach the first roundabout before turning right onto the A412 towards Rickmansworth. Take the second left into Merton Road (which is signposted Hospital). Keep right on that road before turning left onto Vicarage Road as the road forks. The ground will be on your left.

Car Parking

There is no parking available for fans at the ground and street parking is restricted for local residents with matchday permits.

Watford town centre has several car parks, the easiest of which for access to Vicarage Road is Church Car Park on the inside of the ring-road, opposite the turn-off into Vicarage Road. All town centre car parks are within a 10-minute walk of Vicarage Road. There is also additional car parking in the Town Centre at Royalty House (on King Street, just off the High Street). Other possibilities are Watford Grammar School for Girls, Cassiobury Park Avenue, and Fishers Industrial Estate off Wiggenhall Road.

Addtiional information is available with Watford Football Club’s ‘Visiting Vicarage Road’ guide which can be seen by clicking here.

Getting There By Train

Watford High Street is the nearest station to the stadium and is just a ten-minute walk away.

Most fans will come into Watford Junction train station, which is about a 20-minute walk. You can either hop on a train from there to Watford High Street, or enjoy a walk through the town centre.

Coach Travel

Official Coach Travel provided by Princess Coaches can be purchased for this game, priced at £19 per person. Coaches will depart St Mary’s Stadium at 10.45am, Eastleigh at 11am, Winchester at 11.15am.

Watford vs Southampton: Team news, kick-off time odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of the Premier League’s weekend action, Sportsmail will be providing you with team news, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all you need to know as Watford host Southampton.

Southampton could welcome back defenders Wesley Hoedt, Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied at Watford.

Hoedt (concussion), Soares (hamstring) and Pied (leg) have all returned to training and their fitness will be assessed before kick-off.

Striker Charlie Austin remains on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Watford’s only home Premier League victory against Southampton came in their very first such meeting against them – winning 3-2 back in December 1999 (D1 L1 since).

Saints haven’t lost both league meetings against Watford in a season since the 2007-08 Championship campaign.

There have been 34 goals scored in the last eight meetings between these sides at Vicarage Road in all competitions (19 for Watford, 15 for Southampton), at an average of over four per game.

Watford have lost six of their last seven Premier League games, winning the other against Leicester.

The Hornets have dropped 16 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season – more than any other side.

Saints are winless in nine Premier League games (D4 L5); only West Bromwich Albion are on a longer current run in the division (20).

Indeed, Southampton last had a longer run without a win in the division back in January 2005 (10 games).

Marco Silva’s side have won just 48 per cent of their Premier League points in home games this season (12/25) – the lowest ration in the division.

Nathan Redmond has scored four goals and provided one assist in his five Premier League games against Watford – he’s scored more against the Hornets than he has any other opponent in the competition.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has scored in both of his Premier League games against Southampton, including his first ever goal in the competition in March 2017.

Everton in negotiations over Saints target

Show/hide article…

Everton have moved into pole position to sign Saints target Theo Walcott.

Toffees manager Sam Allardyce revealed his club have opened talks with the Gunners over a potential £20m deal for the 28-year-old, who has only 18 months remaining on his contract.

Everton are reportedly prepared to match Walcott’s Arsenal wages, rumoured to be around £120,000-a-week, as well as Arsenal’s valuation.

Saints have been keen on a reunion with one of the club’s most successful academy graduates, but now face having to pay a hefty fee as well as obliterating the club’s wage structure, which all makes a deal much less likely, even given the ability to offer Walcott the chance to keep his young family local rather than uproot them.

The England international has made just 15 appearances this season but has not made a Premier League start since April.

Allardyce sees a move to Goodison as a chance for Walcott to reignite his faltering career.

“I think you are all aware of our interest in Theo. If that is possible to get over the line I’d be delighted,” said Allardyce, who has already strengthened his forward line with the purchase of £28m Beskitas striker Cenk Tosun.

"Obviously there are negotiations that are happening at the moment and if that can all be sorted out - one of the most difficult things to do today - then that would be a great addition in my opinion to come and join us from an attacking point of view.

"Two or three reasons really: goalscoring threat, pace, experience and he’s good on assists from wide areas in terms of his crossing ability.

"Theo’s not as risky (as Tosun) because he’s proven. He’s scored 100 goals for Arsenal from wide positions as well as many assists.

"His pace is one of his key strengths, which we lack in this squad. His assists are pretty good as well as his goals.

"We are short of goals so to add power in our goalscoring ability would be very important for me if we can negotiate that transfer - and he’s only 28.

"I wouldn’t have thought a player today would have any qualms about where he moves now if he is moving for his career.

"I wouldn’t think he had that mentality that it was not the right place to go to get first-team football. It’s ‘Have boots, will travel’ now isn’t it?

“I don’t think there’s any chance of a loan so I think it is a permanent deal we’re hoping to negotiate. It is not imminent at the moment but some negotiations are going on.”

Walcott is now Everton’s primary target but that is likely to mean a number of fringe players are moved on.

Pellegrino sticks to his guns

Show/hide article…

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino insists he will continue to make what he believes are the right decisions for the club and will not bow to fan pressure.

Pellegrino has come under increased scrutiny from supporters, who even booed him and chanted ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ as he made a late sub as Saints defended a lead at Fulham last weekend.

It is a tough time for the manager, but while he understands the frustrations given Saints’ recent form, he is adamant he is big enough to stick by his beliefs.

“I understand the situation of the fans because we got the same feeling,” said Pellegrino as Saints prepare for a crucial trip to face Watford at Vicarage Road tomorrow.

“Here the people that we are the biggest responsible of our situation.

“It is our most important job and the most important people involved to change this.

“When I do some change I try to do the best for the team.

“Some people think I believe more in this player or the other, and it’s difficult to talk about all the fans with somebody questioning some changes. I try to do the best for the team.

“I don’t make decisions for the fans. I do the best for the team.”

Saints and Watford both picked up FA Cup wins to give themselves a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s game, with both having been on poor runs prior to then.

Despite all the pressure, Pellegrino is worrying about the team rather than his own job.

“It’s part of our job,” he insisted. “Every single manager the biggest risk in football is to work in football.

“In football we need results. Results are everything.

“We are not just talking about the how the team plays but budget and money.

“Today football is not just about if the team play good or results but next season money and business and we have to understand this.

“I am doing my best.

“We understand we are not in a good moment but I feel in the squad everybody in the squad knows we need to do a little bit more to try and change the situation to try and convert these stats in better results.”

Pellegrino is hoping for a hat-trick of injury boosts to his squad.

Jeremy Pied, Cedric Soares and Wesley Hoedt have all returned to training, and are in contention to be involved at Vicarage Road.

It might be that the game comes a bit too soon for Cedric, who has been missing for several weeks, but Pellegrino will analyse them in training before naming his side.

He said: “All of them have been training with the team.

“They are not 100 per cent but I think they will be part of the team in training.

“Until we decide because one thing is the medical condition and the other is the football condition. We analyse and we decide.

“The good news is all of them are ready.”

Saints target permanent January signings

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino wants Saints to target permanent January deals rather than loan signings in a bid to ease their relegation fears and secure a bright future for the club.

Saints are in desperate need of reinforcements, but as ever the January window is a difficult time to sign the kind of calibre of player that the club wants.

The focus remains on getting in an attacking player after Charlie Austin was ruled out for a lengthy spell with hamstring injury.

Saints are chasing Theo Walcott from Arsenal, while Pellegrino was coy on reports linking him with his former striker Guido Carrillo, who is now at Monaco.

If at all possible Pellegrino wants players at St Mary’s on a permanent basis rather than a temporary deal to ensure they are invested in the future of the club.

He said: “Obviously (we prefer permanent deals) because when you bring somebody for five years it is not the same as bringing somebody for six months.

“I have played on a six month contract and for three or four years and the feeling is completely different.

“It depends obviously. There are some player on the market that it is impossible for us to buy them and others it depends on the age, and you can bring them with the option to buy them in June.

“Now we have got our target but the plan a, b and c and after we are waiting.”

He added: “Everything depends on the situation of the player.

“There are some players that the other part of the negotiation don’t allow us to buy them and the only way we have is to bring them on loan.

“We have to analyse the market and after we will decide.

“Everybody in this club wants the best for the club, and sometimes you have to use this option, but everybody wants to do first of all the best.”

Saints are having to be patient in the January window.

Arsenal may not wish to let Walcott go until they are sure about the future of Alexis Sanchez, who is linked with a January move to Man City, or they have potential replacements.

It might prove a long wait to get deals done as similar situations play out elsewhere.

While Saints do have cash to spend after the £75m sale of Virgil van Dijk, Pellegrino has urged supporters to remain patient.

“The fans have to be patient,” he insisted. “Everybody at this club wants people who can help us to be stronger in the future and right now in the present.

“Especially we have had some problems with Charlie for example who will be out a long period of time.

“We have to be optimistic because we want a couple of targets and we are working in this way.”

Speaking of Walcott he commented: “I cannot talk about players that are not here.

“We know Walcott is a very good player, but now it’s not my concern to talk about players who are not at our club.”

Pellegrino managed Carrillo at Estudiantes and the Saints boss said: “I know him but I repeat that the market you can talk about anyone once the players signs a contract, but before I don’t believe in 50 per cent, 60 per cent. It’s here or nothing.”

Match Preview: Watford vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Get all you need to know ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting, as Saints travel to Vicarage Road to face Watford.

THE MATCH

Watford vs Southampton

Saturday 13th January, 3pm BST

Vicarage Road

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

It’s a big game for both sides, who have found themselves in tricky runs of form of late.

After an impressive start to the season, Watford have won just one of their last nine Premier League games.

The Hornets still occupy a position in the top half of the table and sit seven places above Saints, but just five points separate the teams, which illustrates how quickly things can change.

Saints will be buoyed by their FA Cup victory at Fulham last time out, ending a nine-match winless run in the process.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Defenders Wesley Hoedt, Cédric and Jérémy Pied have all returned to training in a boost to Mauricio Pellegrino’s defensive options.

Charlie Austin (hamstring) is the only guaranteed absentee, while late decisions will be made on the other three.

Watford: Manager Marco Silva has been hit by injuries to defensive quartet Miguel Britos, Younes Kaboul, Craig Cathcart and Kiko Femenia.

Young English pair Will Hughes and Nathaniel Chalobah have performed impressively when called upon, but could also be missing from the Hornets’ midfield.

FORM GUIDE

Southampton’s previous five:

Fulham (a) W 1-0 (Emirates FA Cup)

Crystal Palace (h) L 1-2

Manchester United (a) D 0-0

Tottenham Hotspur (a) L 2-5

Huddersfield Town (h) D 1-1

Sofiane Boufal has been a shining light for Southampton in recent weeks with his ball-carrying ability and eye for the spectacular.

Shane Long returned to the scoresheet in Saints’ last Premier League outing at home to Crystal Palace, while Pierre-Emile Højbjerg continues to produce industrious performances from midfield.

Brazilian Richarlison has been an obvious standout, but Abdoulaye Doucouré has also been a major success story for the Hornets.

Described by his manager as the “heartbeat” of the club’s season, the midfielder is a powerful box-to-box runner who has scored in the last two meetings between the sides.

Previous four meetings:

September 2017: Southampton 0-2 Watford

March 2017: Watford 3-4 Southampton (Tadić, Redmond 2, Gabbiadini)

August 2016: Southampton 1-1 Watford (Redmond)

January 2016: Southampton 2-0 Watford (Long, Tadić)

DID YOU KNOW?

There have been 34 goals scored in the last eight meetings between these sides at Vicarage Road in all competitions (19 for Watford, 15 for Southampton), at an average of over four per game.

The Hornets have dropped 16 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season – more than any other side.

Marco Silva’s side have won just 48% of their Premier League points in home games this season (12/25) – the lowest ratio in the division.
