Tottenham striker Harry Kane tops ’ Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings this week.

Kane scored twice to extend his league tally to 20 goals during a 4-0 win against Everton on Saturday, while Heung-Min Son soared into the No 2 spot after breaking the deadlock and claiming two assists at Wembley.

Team-mates Dele Alli and Cristian Eriksen were also among the top performers, with the former teeing up the latter to finish a sublime passage of play and net Spurs’ fourth in the 81st minute.

West Ham continued their resurgence under new boss David Moyes, with in-form Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini among the goals during a 4-1 win at Huddersfield.

Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino both made the top 10 after finding the back of the net during the thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 victory over Stoke at Old Trafford with Anthony Martial hitting United’s second from range, while Paul Pogba produced a man-of-the-match display to reach No 12 in the chart.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

MailOnline Fantasy Football team of the week: West Brom duo score big

Show/hide article…

Those who were brave enough to go with West Brom’s defensive options have been rewarded as Alan Pardew picked up his first win as the Baggies manager on Saturday.

West Brom overcame Brighton 2-0 at The Hawthorns with defensive duo Jonny Evans and Craig Dawson producing disciplined and goal scoring displays to keep Chris Hughton’s side at bay.

Those who backed Marko Arnautovic to maintain his recent run of form were also big scorers as Sportsmail puts together a look at the fantasy football team of the weekend across the Premier League.

Schmeichel would have been an interesting pick as Leicester traveled to Chelsea after Antonio Conte’s men had failed to score in their last two games.

However, it takes a robust defensive display to keep the Blues out at home and that is exactly what the Dane served up as he produced a number of brilliant stops to seal a point for his team.

Evans may well be in line for a transfer to a top six club but it still would have taken a brave soul to install any West Brom defender into their line-up.

However, Pardew recorded his first win as Baggies manager on Saturday and Evans was a key figure in the game. Not only did he keep a clean sheet but the Northern Irishman also opened the scoring.

One West Brom defender was a risk. Two would have been unthinkable. However, anyone who had both Evans and Craig Dawson would have been delighted on Saturday night.

Dawson, like Evans, also earned an emphatic 14 points as he too scored a goal and managed to keep Brighton out.

Valencia finally returned to action following a hamstring injury on Monday night and it appeared the break did him the world of good as he fired his team ahead in the ninth minute.

The Ecuador international collected a crossfield pass from Paul Pogba and unleashed a stunning shot beyond Jack Butland into the top corner. A clean sheet was an added bonus, handing him 14 points for the week.

West Ham’s South American star combined beautifully with Arnautovic all afternoon, scoring twice as David Moyes’ men blew Huddersfield away 4-1 on Saturday.

Lanzini first finished expertly into the far corner with a low, drilled finish before he completed the scoring five minutes later by slamming the ball home following a powerful run from his Austrian team-mate.

Ward-Prowse scored his first two goals of the Premier League season in the Saints’ 2-2 with Watford on Saturday.

The homegrown talent produced two composed finishes as he appeared to put his side on track for all three points before a blatant handball from Abdoulaye Doucoure snatched a point for the Hornets late on.

Son continues to show his importance to Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Despite Harry Kane receiving all the plaudits, the South Korean continues to score important goals for Spurs.

He equaled Jermain Defoe’s record of scoring in five consecutive home league matches during the 4-0 win over Everton with a close-range finish and also provided an assist at Wembley.

Any Liverpool player would have been in contention for a place in the team following their stunning 4-3 win over Manchester City but it is the deadly Egyptian who made the cut once again.

Salah scored his side’s fourth goal when he capitalised on a poor clearance from Ederson before firing into an empty net from distance. He also won possession and provided the crucial pass which led to Sadio Mane putting Liverpool 3-1 ahead in the second-half goal rush at Anfield.

As Pep Guardiola’s side saw their unbeaten Premier League record come to a shuddering halt at Anfield, players to have selected Gundogan would have been more than happy with his efforts.

The German midfielder saw his blocked shot fall into the path of Bernardo Silva, who made it 4-2 in the closing stages, before he then scored a goal of his own to set up a nervy finish on Merseyside.

Arnautovic continues to impress for David Moyes and he put Huddersfield to the sword on Saturday with an emphatic performance.

Deployed as a striker, the Austrian showed aggression, pace and an eye for goal as he scored his side’s second and set-up Lanzini twice at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Another game, another brace for Tottenham’s lethal striker.

Both goals were relatively simple for a forward of Kane’s calibre as he beat Jordan Pickford from close range twice to score 12 points for the week.

GOSSIP: Everton close in on Saints target Walcott

Show/hide article…

SAINTS look set to miss out on number one transfer target Theo Walcott after the BBC reported that Everton are “close to agreeing deal” for the Arsenal man.

The Toffees are believed be nearing a deal worth “more than £20m” for the 28-year-old, who Saints had hoped to bring back to St Mary’s.

Saints were confident of landing the England international but with Everton prepared to spend big, it seems their hopes of signing their former star are fading.

Toffees boss Sam Allardyce sees a move to Goodison as a chance for Walcott to reignite his faltering career.

“I think you are all aware of our interest in Theo. If that is possible to get over the line I’d be delighted,” said Allardyce.

"Obviously there are negotiations that are happening at the moment and if that can all be sorted out - one of the most difficult things to do today - then that would be a great addition in my opinion to come and join us from an attacking point of view.

"Two or three reasons really: goalscoring threat, pace, experience and he’s good on assists from wide areas in terms of his crossing ability.

"Theo’s not as risky (as Tosun) because he’s proven. He’s scored 100 goals for Arsenal from wide positions as well as many assists.

"His pace is one of his key strengths, which we lack in this squad. His assists are pretty good as well as his goals.

"We are short of goals so to add power in our goalscoring ability would be very important for me if we can negotiate that transfer - and he’s only 28.

"I wouldn’t have thought a player today would have any qualms about where he moves now if he is moving for his career.

"I wouldn’t think he had that mentality that it was not the right place to go to get first-team football. It’s ‘Have boots, will travel’ now isn’t it?

“I don’t think there’s any chance of a loan so I think it is a permanent deal we’re hoping to negotiate. It is not imminent at the moment but some negotiations are going on.”

Fear of errors has Saints “playing safely”

Show/hide article…

STEVEN Davis admits because of Saints’ perilous position at the foot of the Premier League they subconsciously play too safely.

On many occasions this season Mauricio Pellegrino’s struggling side have dropped deep and tried to protect a lead only to be undone and drop vital points.

This was on full show again at Watford on Saturday as Saints surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2.

It isn’t, however, anything tactical by Pellegrino but to do with the players’ confidence.

“The minimum requirement is to go out there and work hard and try and to do your job to the best of your ability,” said Davis.

“Sometimes the quality can be questionable and we can play better with the ball, especially in the second half [at Watford] when we could have controlled the game in possession.

“But that’s a little bit of a knock on affect from the position we’re in.

“In this position you’re subconsciously thinking that you don’t want to make those errors, meaning we’re playing a bit safely at times.

“There’s a lot of quality in that dressing room, we just need to go out and show that belief and quality between now and the end of the season.”

During the 1-0 win over Fulham in the FA Cup recently, the 5,000-strong contingent of Saints fans at Vicarage Road chanted ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ when Pellegrino made substitutions they didn’t agree with and also booed the under pressure boss.

In contrast, the travelling support at Vicarage Road sang their hearts out and backed the team throughout – even as Saints sat back and came under increasing pressure in the second half.

“I thought they were excellent, they stayed behind us the whole game and that’s what we need,” said Davis.

“Of course, that’s what we spoke about, the most important thing in a difficult moment is that everyone stays together and everyone is pulling in the same direction.

“That goes from top to bottom of the club and also the fans play a major part in that as well. I thought they were great today.”

The 33-year-old says that this kind of “energy” from the supporters helps the team during a tricky time.

“Of course, especially second half, it gives you that energy to keep going in the game,” he said.

“ Not that you need anything extra but it can definitely add to it and bring energy to the team.”
