Referee East “the victim” after Watford’s handball goal that cost Saints

Show/hide article…

FORMER Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher insists official Roger East was “the victim” after Abdoulaye Doucoure’s handball goal at Watford.

The Frenchman handled the ball into the net, costing Saints victory at Vicarage Road in the 90th minute in the 2-2 draw.

Gallagher, who refereed in the Premier League from 1992 to 2007, said to Sky Sports: “The referee [Roger East], I believe, is the victim here because he has no chance whatsoever.

“If you look where the player’s head is, he moves his head forward… and the only person who can clearly see that that is handball is the goalkeeper.

“When you look at it sideways on, when you see the head go forward you cannot be sure at that distance whether he has headed it or not.

“The only person who knows is the player himself and obviously the goalkeeper.”

Saints had gone 2-0 up at Watford thanks to a James Ward-Prowse brace.

Andre Gray made it 2-1 on 58 minutes, before Doucoure’s goal.

Mario Lemina in focus: Time for Southampton to trust in his talent?

Show/hide article…

Born in Gabon, made in France, taught by Marcelo Bielsa and signed from Italy. Getting the best from Mario Lemina could be the key for Southampton, writes Adam Bate.

Southampton’s struggles continue. Having dismissed Claude Puel in the summer and hoped for progress under Mauricio Pellegrino, the side has regressed instead. While they were unfortunate to concede a late equaliser at Watford on Saturday, the draw nevertheless means that Saints are now on a run of 10 Premier League games without a win.

The sale of Virgil van Dijk will add to the feeling outside of St Mary’s that Southampton are paying the price for player sales. That constant renewal has caught up with them as the newest recruits fail to find their feet. But closer to home there is another argument - that familiar faces are the ones whose levels have dropped. That new arrivals need a chance.

Mario Lemina’s talent, for example, is obvious. He has the best passing accuracy at Southampton, makes a tackle more regularly than any of his team-mates and ranks among the top three central midfielders in the Premier League for dribbles completed per 90 minutes. The stats hint at a pedigree that should not come as a surprise.

Lemina may find himself on the bench behind an out-of-form Steven Davis right now, but he arrived last summer for a club-record £18m fee and as a two-time Serie A title winner with Juventus. His last game for the Italian champions was in the Champions League final and he was used to hard work having been schooled in the ways of Marcelo Bielsa at Marseille.

It was under the iconic Argentinian coach that Lemina really made progress. “He pushed me a lot,” said the player himself. “Especially mentally.” Bielsa was a Lemina fan too. “He is a different type of player to the majority of footballers,” he explained. “He knows how to attack and how to defend. He offers a lot of solutions to the coach and to his team.”

A Bielsa-inspired Marseille topped the table at Christmas of that 2014/15 season and the manager’s penchant for switching players’ positions was evident again in his usage of Lemina, expecting him to drop in on the right side of defence on occasions. It was an adjustment for a player who had been used on the wing as a teenager but he fared well.

Those early years were spent at French club Lorient and Bruno Manga, Lemina’s then club team-mate and now his international colleague with Gabon, believes it was the perfect place to develop. “Lorient is very good and it is very quiet,” the Cardiff City defender told Sky Sports. “There is not so much pressure so you can play like you want.”

Manga remembers Lemina as “a very good player” and “a very good guy” as well as someone who “has so many things to show people” on the pitch. He was training with Lorient’s senior side at the age of 15 - in keeping with the club’s ethos. “Our goal is to advance players individually so that they can join the first team,” says coach Michel Le Lay.

Fellow Lorient youth-team coach Regis Le Bris sets out Lorient’s philosophy as follows: “To master the match, especially with significant possession.” Even now, Le Bris regards Lemina as a template for others. “Our goal is that other young people follow the example of Mario,” he explains. Lemina was still a teenager when he played his last game for Lorient.

By that point he had already been a part of France’s 2013 U20 World Cup winning squad alongside Paul Pogba. His then international coach Jose Anigo spoke of Lemina’s “above-average abilities” and after further developing those skills under Bielsa, he earned his move to Juventus in the summer of 2015.

Lemina impressed enough in that first season with Juventus to persuade Massimiliano Allegri to make his loan deal permanent despite the player missing much of the winter period through injury. He completed a second consecutive double with Juve last season, starting the campaign as a regular in the absence of Claudio Marchisio.

But the lack of discipline that had previously seen him sent off for a punch against Rennes, emerged again against Lyon and cost him Allegri’s confidence. By the time that Lemina came on in that Champions League final against Barcelona last June, his departure was inevitable. “On a personal level, it was a difficult season,” he said at the time. “I wanted to play more.”

All of which set Lemina up nicely to further his progress at Southampton, a club with a history of player development and a pathway back to the big time. The early signs were promising even amid an uncertain start for the team under a new coach. He was man of the match at Crystal Palace in September and the hope then was that he’d help Saints kick on.

“It was quite a big fee for us to pay but it has been a good start for him,” Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier told Sky Sports at the time. "He was outstanding in the win against Crystal Palace and quality against Manchester United too. If he keeps putting in performances like that against the top sides then no doubt Liverpool will come calling!

“He has not got a great goalscoring record and I do not see him as somebody who is going to get us the eight or nine goals we need from midfield, but he is good at breaking up play and picking a pass. He is forming a very solid partnership with Oriol Romeu and if we want to keep moving forward, these are the sort of players that we need.”

That was the mood at the time but a niggling ankle injury, one that Lemina admits he is managing, has hampered his impact since. Southampton actually picked up 11 points from the first seven games that he started, but have won only one of the 12 in which he has not been in the starting line-up. He is not the source of the problem but it can be contagious.

Lemina has not been blameless - a failure to track Heung-Min Son in the woeful 5-2 Boxing Day defeat to Tottenham earned him understandable criticism and a place back among the substitutes. But most supporters remain broadly sympathetic, appreciating his humility on social media and aware that he is not the catalyst for the club’s slump in form.

In fact, the mood is one of confusion at Pellegrino’s team selections. What the fans want now is for Lemina to get a run of games. That is what the midfielder himself needs right now too because performing on a regular basis is perhaps the one reservation about him throughout his career so far. His Southampton debut was only his 50th ever league start.

The 24-year-old is searching for his 12th start of the season against Tottenham, just one shy of his previous best, set at Marseille under Bielsa. It is time for Lemina to kick on again. If he can do that in a Southampton shirt then the club could still have another huge asset on their hands. And find a big positive in a miserable campaign. Time to trust in Lemina’s talent.

Sims encouraged as comeback continues

Show/hide article…

The winger featured in Southampton Under-23s’ Premier League 2 clash with Aston Villa on Monday night, following on from his comeback last month.

Sims, who suffered a long-term knee injury in May, said: "I’ve been waiting a bit of time now for the first 90. I played 45 against Reading just before Christmas, but, with the Christmas break and that, I’ve not really had a chance to play 90.

“For me, it was good to finally get it, and get the fitness back, although it was disappointing about the result.”

The 20-year-old added: "It’s hard to get the sharpness back unless you’re playing games and for me it’s been another step.

“You get back into training and you feel like you’re sharp and getting your touch back, but then when you get into a match scenario it’s completely different. The only way to get back is by getting matches under your belt.”

Sims made a very brief appearance from the bench in the first-team’s 2-2 draw at Watford last weekend, while he was an unused substitute in the FA Cup win at Fulham seven days earlier, and he has taken encouragement from being back involved at that level.

“It’s been a long time since I played my last Premier League match, so it was nice to be back out there,” he said.

"It was only a short period of time, but just to be back on the bench and experience it and get back out on the pitch for the first team was brilliant for me. Because it was such a long time and such a long wait, it made it a bit more sweet.

"It’s obviously a hard one for me, because I need to get the game time in. That’s the only way I’m going to get back to full fitness and sharpness.

“So it’s a case of getting the game time in now, then hopefully towards the end of the season I can push back into the first-team properly and get some more minutes.”

How the Premier League table would look based on every club’s away form only

Show/hide article…

It’s been another poor season for Arsenal.

We are 23 matches into the Premier League campaign and the Gunners sit outside the top four, and they look set to lose Alexis Sanchez this month.

What’s really worrying for Arsene Wenger is just how bad Arsenal have performed away from home in the 2017/18 season.

The north Londoners have won just three of their 12 league matches played away from the Emirates Stadium, claiming only 12 points from a possible 36.

But where does this place Arsenal in an alternative Premier League table based only on away form? Click the right arrow, above, to find out…

Forward pairing look towards Youth Cup tie

Show/hide article…

Having enjoyed a promising run of recent scoring form, both Irish youth internationals spoke about the growing relationship they have formed on the pitch, and the importance of their tight-knit team unit.

“The boys have a tight bond, and we like to back each other, whatever situation we face,” Obafemi said.

“Everything is going well in the first half of the season, we’d like to push on and see how far we can go - as individuals and as a team. A couple of goals have boosted my confident a lot,” Afolabi added.

After netting his twelfth of the season in the comeback win over West Ham last weekend, Obafemi is understandably pleased with his form, but insistent that there is more to come.

He commented: "Obviously I am happy with my goal tally, twelve goals for the season. It’s a good start, but now I’m looking forward to getting more and kicking on.

“Some would compare us to… [laughter]. We’re really tight on and off the pitch, we help one another out a lot. We’re probably not as selfish as maybe we would be.”

Afolabi finished by talking about their FA Youth Cup expectations, and the desire to compete and progress in a Southampton shirt: "It is a mixture of emotions.

"We know what to expect going up north, it will be physical. We’ll have to fight for everything and earn our place.

“It would mean a lot to win it, this is our last year as Under-18s players so we’d like to go as far as possible. We’ve got to prove what we can do for the club.”

U18 Preview: Blackpool vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Buoyed by their early cup triumph, as well as a comeback victory against West Ham in the league a week ago, Saints’ young charges enter this tie in a confident mood, but Craig Fleming is keen to encourage a calmness in camp when travelling to Bloomfield Road this evening.

While acknowledging that their young side may enter the tie as favourites, the mentality remains as focussed as ever, as coaching duo Fleming and Danny Butterfield explain.

“There is a fair amount of confidence in the squad,” Fleming asserted. "Bar the odd blip, all season long the boys have been great.

"Very competitive in games, doing well in most. But they are young boys so we won’t be taking anything lightly.

“We’ve seen enough footage of Blackpool to form opinions; they look well organised and very competitive,” Butterfield added. "It will be a tough game, especially travelling up to their patch.

“We’re giving them the utmost respect and preparing the boys in the same way as we would any other game. We won’t change anything, or get too creative in ways that we wouldn’t usually.”

League One outfit, Blackpool, compete in a league two tiers below Southampton, but Fleming and Butterfield won’t be taking anything for granted, after their opponents overcame Premier League side West Ham in the competition’s earlier rounds.

“We’ve preached to the boys all season long about concentrating on what we do,” Fleming emphasised. "We won’t stress too much, as long as everyone is doing their jobs.

"We’ve seen dramatic improvements. The first year scholars have come in to full-time football for the first time and made big strides, as well as the boys who are pushing to earn pro contracts.

“We aren’t going to get ahead of ourselves, we’ve got a really tough away game to get through. But we’ve talked about being capable of going deep in the competition, and if we can perform at the levels we have been, we give ourselves a good chance.”
