Transfer news: Southampton target Luciano Vietto on verge of joining Sampdoria in £15.5million deal

Show/hide article…

Sampdoria have agreed a deal to sign Southampton target Luciano Vietto, according to reports in Italy.

The Atletico Madrid forward is very much in demand this summer and the Saints are among a host of clubs hoping to land him before the window shuts.

As talkSPORT told you this week, Monaco have also joined the race to land the Argentine, who scored six goals in 21 outings during his loan at Sevilla last term.

But now Sky Sports Italia have revealed that Sampdoria have reached an agreement with Atletico to sign Vietto for £15.5m.

The Serie A club are in the market for a new striker with Patrick Schick expected to leave and they look to have filled the gap with Vietto.

Neymar, an ‘out of control’ market and why Coutinho and Van Dijk could still get their moves

Show/hide article…

On Wednesday, Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger set as unmoving a stance as possible for this window and insisted Virgil van Dijk is “not for sale”, but there are some close to the club who believe there is still a degree of flexibility to that.

They feel that the hierarchy are just waiting for Liverpool to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, so that they can then charge the Anfield club even more for the Dutch defender. Maybe above £80m.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have set as strong a stance on the Brazilian as Southampton did with Van Dijk and have no public will to sell to Barcelona, but there are similarly some who believe that there is a price Anfield just couldn’t turn down. That price is probably much higher than it would have been even a month ago, thanks to Neymar’s record-breaking transfer to PSG.

Since Barca sold the Brazilian star for £198 against their will, anyone they want to fill the player’s shoes will immediately be priced in relation to that deal. Coutinho may not be as good as Neymar but he is a seriously talented young midfielder who Barcelona would mould into one of new focal points of their team, so £160m would seem fair - and very difficult to turn down.

This is one of a few big reasons why so many fees are now so high, why someone as admittedly talented as Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele can be priced at over £100m after just six good months, and why everyone from Arsene Wenger to Carlo Ancelotti to Jose Mourinho has complained about a market that is “out of control”.

That market is certainly out of sync with inflation. While Alan Shearer’s record transfer to Newcastle wowed the world in 1996, that price of £15m would be just over £25m today. That is a mere 13 per cent of Neymar’s deal.

The football business itself has of course drastically transformed in the 21 years since then, and is barely recognisable in a commercial sense. Clubs have transformed as businesses. As one indication, Exxon was the biggest company in the world in 2005 at £363bn. Its worth has more doubled in 11 years, compared to how Manchester United’s market cap over the same timescale more than tripled. The growth of football clubs has thereby outstripped broader industries, further explaining this escalation in transfers.

The broadcasting money in the Premier League, in particular, has created a seller’s market where everyone sees English clubs coming, and thereby immediately jacks up their prices, so that full-backs now go for more than £50m. And that is still despite the fact those same English clubs have been generally reluctant to go so high and don’t want to be seen spending too easily for fear that a market precedent could set.

Many at the top end of the game and directly involved in its commercial side feel that this is far from the case with Paris Saint-Germain. There is a belief from some that the French club are trying to “short-squeeze” the market, and pay huge amounts and huge wages for as many big-name players as possible, knowing in the long term that only very few clubs will be able to afford them.

It remains to be seen whether that fear is justified, but it will have only been deepened by widespread accounts that Real Madrid simply can’t match the deal that PSG would be willing to give Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe. One source has it that the teenager’s entourage went to the Bernabeu hierarchy explaining what is on the table from Paris, but that Madrid could not get close to it.

It is also why the size of the Neymar deal may have seemed unique but could yet have common effects, as illustrated by the suspected transfer trail from the Brazilian to Van Dijk. Even if no signing goes as sensationally high as Neymar’s, Barca’s next deal is influenced by it and their necessity to buy, thus creating a knock-on effect. That’s why the valuation for a player of a certain standard at the top end of the scale is now breaching £100m.

The economist in Wenger once again spotted this before anyone, arguing just after Paul Pogba’s 2016 transfer that “it will not be long before we see a £150m or £200m signing”. It has all escalated, and won’t stop until the money coming in does, as Wenger also argued back then. “Since I started in the game I said, at some stage, it has to stop but as long as football develops and becomes more popular you would say that more money will come in. “

It doesn’t mean that short-squeeze approach is absolutely destined for success, or that it will completely distort the market. There are still only a finite number of players that can be bought by the wealthiest clubs, amid a huge global player population. As Monaco have shown, a lower-scale investment in proper scouting can still have much greater returns.

We also still see a market where Juventus have been able to buy Blaise Matuidi for £20m. This is one offset by outrageous expenditure. Just like with Real Madrid themselves in 2009 - when they twice broke the world record with Kaka and then Cristiano Ronaldo - they then have to offload players just to create squad space, in situations that suddenly favour the buyer.

It emphasises that, even in a market that is “out of control”, some composed thinking can still go a long way. Money may still talk louder than anything in football, but it doesn’t always have the last word.

But a suitably outrageous price may still mean, however, that the last words in the Van Dijk and Coutinho situations are “yes, we’ll sell”.

United boss Mourinho still keen to bring in Perisic

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho still wants Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan.

The Manchester United manager has been pleased with the shape his squad is taking at the start of the season but recognises the need to have more pace between the lines and on the flanks.

Inter have been steadfast in their desire to keep Perisic and his agent has been in this week to discuss a new contract with Chelsea also monitoring developments.

Mourinho identified the 28-year-old as wide player who can cut inside and interchange with his forwards but is strong and difficult to knock off the ball.

The Portuguese boss has been concerned that United don’t always move possession quickly enough and that some of his midfield attacking options are getting pushed off the ball.

West Bromwich Albion have opened talks over a £15million move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer.

Manager Tony Pulis has been pursuing a centre-back with Dinamo Zagreb’s Felip Benkovic also considered after Albion failed to prise Ben Gibson from Middlesbrough.

Talks took place in London on Wednesday though Pulis maintains he does not want to lose Jonny Evans to Manchester City.

His stance is that Darren Fletcher’s departure has already weakened the dressing room and, despite the arrival of Gareth Barry from Everton, Evans is key to the club going forward.

City have offered £18m for Evans and will make an improved offer but Pulis is adamanat at this stage that he wants Evans to stay.

Wimmer has been a peripheral figure at Tottenham and has attracted interest from Southampton, Stoke and Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old is keen to move on to play regular football and hopes to conclude his transfer by the weekend.

Liverpool maintain they have not changed their stance on Philippe Coutinho despite Pep Segura saying a deal was close.

The Anfield club made a statement last week and plan to adhere to it

Barcelona general manager Segura, who worked at Liverpool’s academy between 2009 and 2012, announced Barcelona were close to signing Coutinho and Dembele on Wednesday night but no further talks have taken place between the clubs.

Barca are understood to be willing to offer up to £110m after having two offers rejected, with the last at £90m, but Liverpool are so far standing firm.

Coutinho has a back injury and will not be involved in the game against Crystal Palace.

Premier League clubs are on alert after Julian Draxler was told that he has no future at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Germany international only joined last January from Wolfsburg and scored six goals.

Everton and Arsenal discussed moves for him last summer.

Manager Marco Silva likes Islam Slimani at Leicester City too but at this stage a move is deemed unlikely.

Watford maintain an interest in Everton’s Aaron Lennon but Peru international Carrillo is expected to arrive soon with a possible £15m permanent deal to follow. Carrillo worked with Silva at Sporting Lisbon but upset fans when he moved to rivals Benfica.

Watford are also rivalling Burnley for Italy defender Andrea Ranocchia who is available on another loan folowing his time at Hull City last season.

Meanwhile, Watford have cancelled the contract of Lithuanian goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis.

Southampton are closing on a £15.5m deal for Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt.

The Holland international is understood to have said his farewells to teammates in Rome this morning as he awaits the clubs to finalise the fee.

Southampton insist 23-year-old left-sided centre-back Hoedt has not been lined up as a replacement for Virgil Van Dijk but his arrival may trigger new bids from would-be suitors.

Van Dijk is still keen to leave with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all interested.

Swansea City are finalising terms with Manchester City for the return of striker Wilfried Bony and are negotiating a £25m fee with West Bromwich Albion for Nacer Chadli.

Manager Paul Clement also wants a midfielder and a right-back.

Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala is keen on a move to Inter Milan. The French defender is wanted on loan by the Italian side though.

Stoke City defender Philipp Wollscheid is in talks to join French side Metz.

The 28-year-old German endured a nightmare season on loan at Wolfsburg last year. He was suspended after two games following a row with coach Dieter Hecking and then need ear surgery after a bout of tinnitus.

He returned to Wolfsburg after Hecking was sacked to help them stay up via the relegation play-off.

Stoke have concerns over the long-term future of Ryan Shawcross, who has 12 months left on his contract, and have been discussing an £8.5m move for Club Brugge defender Bjorn Engels, 22.

Huddersfield Town have received an approach from Hull City for striker Nahki Wells.

Wolves have also expressed interest in the 27-year-old Bermuda international Wells who scored ten goals last season but finds himself on the fringes of the first team following Steve Mounie’s arrival.

QPR are fielding enquiries for striker Idrissa Sylla. The 26-year-old has been a target for Wolves and Swansea.

He scored ten goals last season after joining from Anderlecht.

Transfer news: Nine players too good to be playing for mid-table teams

Show/hide article…

Few would have predicted Manchester City making a move for West Bromwich Albion captain Jonny Evans this summer.

Pep Guardiola wants to add a homegrown defender to his squad and Evans, ESPN understand, is the man he wants, having been put off by the £30m asking price for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.

While some are shocked by the possibility of Evans moving to the Etihad, the former Manchester United centre back could be a welcome addition to the team.

So, inspired by Guardiola’s want to bring the Baggies skipper to City, talkSPORT.com has put together a list of players outside the top six who could perform for one of the Premier League’s elite clubs.

Virgil van Dijk’s Southampton status unchanged, says Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed Virgil van Dijk’s status as a Southampton player remains unchanged, and the defender will play no part in Saturday’s game with West Ham.

Van Dijk has been the subject of much transfer speculation this summer, with Liverpool pursuing a deal before dropping interest after Southampton reported them to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea and Manchester City are also targeting the defender, who submitted a transfer request at St Mary’s on August 7, though Southampton maintain he is not for sale.

“Nothing has changed - it is the same as last week,” Pellegrino said speaking prior to Saturday’s game at home to West Ham.

“For that reason, I have nothing to say, he won’t be available to play.”

Southampton’s uncertainty over the 26-year old’s future has forced them to consider potential replacements, and Sky sources reported on Wednesday the Saints are in talks to sign Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt.

The Netherlands international has impressed for the Serie A side since moving from AZ Alkmaar in 2015, scoring three goals in 21 appearances last season.

Sky in Italy understand Southampton have made a £15.5m offer for the centre-back but Pellegrino refused to confirm the deal had been agreed.

“I know the player, but I will not talk about the market,” he added.

"When you sign and you pay the player is for you, before that I have nothing to say.

“Right now, as you know, we have to be ready for a player to help us in the back four.”

Southampton set to sign Wesley Hoedt and could keep Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton are understood to be closing in on the capture of Holland defender Wesley Hoedt from Lazio.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has refused to rule out a deal for Hoedt, while the St Mary’s outfit are said to have lodged a £15million bid for 23-year-old, who has been capped four times.

Southampton continue to insist they can retain wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk, despite the Dutchman 26-year-old continuing to agitate for a move to Liverpool.

When quizzed on Hoedt, Pellegrino replied: 'I know the player but I will not talk about the market because when you talk about it, a negotiation isn’t 80 per cent or 90 per cent, the negotiation is either 100 per cent or zero per cent.

‘When he signs, a player is then for you to talk about, but before that I have nothing to say.’

Former Celtic star Van Dijk missed Southampton’s goalless Premier League opener with Swansea on Saturday, officially due to a virus.

Pellegrino revealed the centre back has now recovered - but will not be considered for selection for Saturday’s home league clash with West Ham.

‘The Virgil situation, nothing has changed, it’s the same as last week,’ said Pellegrino, of Van Dijk.

‘For that reason I have nothing to say on that. He’s okay but he won’t be available to play.’

The Gao family from China completed their takeover of Southampton by purchasing an 80 per cent stake in the club this week.

Katharina Liebherr will retain a 20 per cent investment in Saints, and Pellegrino hopes the deal will further stabilise the club’s future.

Chairman Ralph Krueger has also this week reiterated the club’s determination not to sell Van Dijk, leaving Pellegrino still confident Saints can retain their highly-rated defender.

‘When I met (technical director) Les Reed and Ralph (Krueger), they told me that they want to keep the best players on the pitch,’ said Pellegrino.

'And at this moment Southampton want to progress on the pitch.

'The idea in the club was to keep the best players in the club.

'Ralph was clear, Les was clear, and hopefully we’ve got the same idea, that to progress as a club we have to keep our best players.

‘And if you’ve got the fortune to bring in another good player we’ll be stronger.’
