Virgil van Dijk: Southampton defender ‘not for sale’, says chairman

Show/hide article…

Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk is “not for sale”, according to club chairman Ralph Krueger.

The Netherlands centre-back, 26, handed in a transfer request last week and it is understood he wanted to move to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

“Virgil is not for sale this window - it’s not personal,” Krueger said of Van Dijk, who joined from Celtic in 2015.

Southampton are also considering a move for Lazio’s Dutch defender Wesley Hoedt for a reported £15m fee.

BBC Sport understands the 23-year-old is one of several centre-backs the club are considering as a potential partner for Van Dijk.

On Monday, Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao and his family completed a deal to buy 80% of the south coast club.

Krueger suggested that the Saints wanted some stability in their squad, adding:

"It’s about an overall much, much, much bigger picture - a change of course for Southampton.

"We want to mature, we want to be a team that can profit from synergies that create a much more attractive football and a better product for the fans, and gives us a chance to get back into Europe.

"That’s one player in this whole equation of 25 and it is the visible one. But for us it’s the principle and it’s the path and it’s the statement we need to make to get to a new space as a club.

“We are very, very adamant about carrying this through.”

Van Dijk did not feature in Saturday’s Premier League opener against Swansea because of a virus. Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who ordered the Dutchman to train alone in the summer, said before the weekend that he wants the defender to stay.

The Netherlands international been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer as well as attracting interest from Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester City.

However, the Anfield club said they ended their interest in June after Saints said they were going to report them to the Premier League for making an alleged illegal approach.

Van Dijk signed a new six-year contract in May 2016, having joined for £13m from Celtic in September 2015.

Virgil van Dijk ‘not for sale in this window’, says Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger is adamant that Virgil van Dijk is “not for sale in this window”, as keeping the defender is “the statement we need to make” at this juncture.

Liverpool heavily pursued a deal for Van Dijk at the start of the summer transfer window, but were forced to drop their interest after Southampton reported them to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested in the defender, who signed a new long-term contract last year.

Last week, Van Dijk took matters into his own hands by handing in a transfer request but Krueger has reiterated that the Netherlands international is not going anywhere.

“Virgil is not for sale in this window and it’s not personal,” the chairman said, just days after the Gao family bought an 80 per cent stake in the club.

"It’s not about him, it’s about an overall much, much, much bigger picture - a change of course for Southampton.

"The first summer I was here five players went out and six went in, not counting academy. Second summer three went out, seven came in, and third summer five went out, five came in.

"Now it is one out and two in, and this is who we want to become.

"We want to mature, we want to be a team that can profit from synergies that create a much more attractive football and a better product for the fans, and gives us a chance to get back into Europe.

"That’s one player in this whole equation of 25 and it is the visible one, but for us it’s the principle and it’s the path and it’s the statement we need to make to get to a new space as a club.

"We are very, very adamant about carrying this through.

“The new partnership has completely and wholly backed our strategy and plan and on September 1 people will see how serious we were and are.”

Van Dijk has been training away from the main group as he attempts to force an exit but Krueger is confident the defender can be integrated successfully back into the first-team squad and accepted, if not forgiven, by supporters.

“Well, first of all, they have experienced it here before on multiple occasions and it hasn’t been a problem,” Krueger said.

"I can go back to Morgan Schneiderlin in our first summer and I could list others, but let’s not do that.

“We’ve had other examples of that where it was no problem, so I don’t see that as a problem.”

Krueger praised “strong leader” Mauricio Pellegrino for the way he has dealt with the situation, saying the Saints boss has kept everybody focused on the job while dealing “very well” with Van Dijk as the pair continue to communicate “openly with each other”.

Saints have signed Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina and Lech Poznan defender Jan Bednarek so far this summer and Krueger says the club are working hard to strengthen further.

“We’re definitely not done,” Krueger said. "We’re looking at options but again we’re not in a position to just bring in anybody.

“It would have to be a player that would fit and tick all the boxes of our needs, not only short-term but long-term.”

Southampton rule out sale of Chelsea and Liverpool target Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger is adamant that Virgil van Dijk is “not for sale in this window” as keeping the defender is “the statement we need to make” at this juncture.

The future of the 26-year-old has been one of the summer window’s longest saga, with early interest from the Anfield outfit being dropped after Southampton in June asked the Premier League to investigate an alleged illegal approach.

Standard Sport understands Chelsea are on good terms with Southampton, which they feel puts them in a strong position for any negotiation over Van Dijk or Cedric Soares.

The club captain last week took matters into his own hands by handing in a transfer request and has been training away from the main group as he attempts to force an exit, but chairman Krueger insists the captain will not be sold with the club needing to make a statement.

Now it is one out and two in, and this is who we want to become.

“We are very, very adamant about carrying this through. The new partnership has completely and wholly backed our strategy and plan and on September 1 people will see how serious we were and are.”

It is a big statement from a club synonymous with seeing their best players leave on annual basis.

None of Southampton’s previous stars have gone as far as to make a public transfer request, yet Krueger believes Van Dijk can be integrated into the group - and accepted, if not forgiven, by supporters.

“Well, first of all, they have experienced it here before on multiple occasions and it hasn’t been a problem,” the former head coach of the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers said.

"I can go back to Morgan Schneiderlin in our first summer and I could list others, but let’s not do that.

“We’ve had other examples of that where it was no problem, so I don’t see that as a problem.”

Southampton hope to sign Lazio’s Wesley Hoedt

Show/hide article…

Southampton are in advanced talks to sign Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt, Sky Sports News understands.

The 23-year-old made his international debut for the Netherlands earlier this year having impressed after moving to Italy on a free transfer from AZ Alkmaar in 2015.

Sky in Italy understand the Saints have made a £15.5m offer for the centre-back but the deal is not yet agreed.

He made 21 appearances in Serie A last season, scoring three times but had to watch from the bench as Lazio beat Juventus 3-2 in the Italian Super Cup on Sunday.

Hoedt could yet line up alongside fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, with Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger insisting he will not be sold despite requesting a transfer last week.

If he signs, Hoedt will be the fourth new arrival at St Mary’s this summer following the addition of Mario Lemina from Juventus, Gornik Leczna defender Jan Bednarek and 16-year-old Will Ferry from Bury.

Earlier this week, Southampton announced that Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao had purchased an 80 per cent stake in the club.

Virgil van Dijk spotted in London in deleted Instagram photo

Show/hide article…

An Instagram photo of Southampton’s in-demand defender Virgil van Dijk apparently in London has ratcheted up speculation.

Van Dijk slapped in a transfer request 10 days ago in a bid to force his way out, with Liverpool the long-term pursuers and Chelsea also keen.

But now, a picture posted on Instagram of ‘big dog’ Van Dijk has sent some fans into a bit of a stir.

@philipuby, who has shared many pictures of himself and Van Dijk, posted a picture to his Instagram story suggesting the Saints man in London

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger insists Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk will not be sold this summer

It is worth pointing out that while it might suggest a Chelsea link, Liverpool also have offices in London, Football.London reports .

And the picture of van Dijk, appearing to be sat at a table in an apartment, suggests he was in the capital for leisure not business.

That didn’t stop today’s photo, which was later deleted by the Instagram user from his story, from getting football fans excited.

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger today tried to put an end to the van Dijk exit talk.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the want-away Dutchman ramped up is attempts to leave Krueger said: “Nobody is for sale that we don’t want to sell and so he is not for sale in this window. We have said it more than once.

“Mauricio Pellegrino has done an amazing job of dealing with this situation. It has not disrupted our team.

“It is not in any way caused a lack of focus in training, in the locker room, and of course everybody will open their arms when Virgil comes back and we go at it.”

Virgil van Dijk pays price for Southampton exile by losing Holland spot

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has been left out of the Holland squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers - including the crucial clash with France.

The centre-half, at a transfer stand-off with Southampton, has been left out ahead of the fixtures in Paris on August 31, and at home to Bulgaria on September 3.

Van Dijk, 26, didn’t play for the Saints in the final three months of last season due to injury, before being left out of the weekend draw with Swansea as his St Mary’s exile continues.

The ex-Celtic man, who has 12 caps to his name, has worked his way back to fitness, but remains on the outside looking in under new Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino, as he looks for a move to Liverpool.

Van Dijk has handed in a transfer request to try and force a switch to Anfield, citing a determination to play in the Champions League, but Southampton are standing firm.

He has been training away from the first-team squad and now has paid for his absence by losing his place in Dick Advocaat’s squad for the make-or-break qualifiers.

"He is currently not training at Southampton,” said Advocaat, in a statement released by the Dutch football association. “It does not make sense to invite him.’’

Robin van Persie has been recalled after a two-year absence, while Wesley Sneijder has also been included.

"I worked with him last season at Fenerbahce where he showed what he could do,” Advocaat said. "Robin is a player we might still need but we’ll see in the next weeks how fit he is and if he is playing.

"This is a preliminary squad so players can fall out or be included later.”

Holland currently sit third in their qualifying group for Russia 2018, with 10 points from six games.

They are three points behind joint leaders France and Sweden.

Norwich 2-0 QPR: Daniel Farke picks up his first Championship win

Show/hide article…

German Daniel Farke celebrated his first Championship win as Norwich manager and instantly praised troublesome striker Nelson Oliveira.

Oliveira was not quite as rebellious in his reaction to getting the chance to impress as in the past but he was even more effective.

Farke livened his City side up by making five changes from the team that lost 3-1 at home to Sunderland on Sunday.

Benefitting from the reshuffle was striker Oliveira who made his feelings about being left out on the opening day at Fulham by scoring an equaliser and peeling his shirt off the flout his name to the manager in defiant fashion.

There were less histrionics this time when he put Norwich ahead four minutes into the second half, as he gleefully celebrated with his teammates.

The Portuguese international neatly found Mario Vrancic on the edge of the box, before getting in behind the Hoops’ defence to take the return pass and finish, left-footed from 10-yards.

‘For sure it was a brilliant goal,’ said Farke. 'The whole attack was very good.

'Hoolahan got the move going with a good pass and Vrancic’s pass was excellent.

‘Oliveira’s was a world class goal. It was a really cool finish. I congratulated him on his performance.’

Equally impressive was CDM Harrison Reed’s finish after the Hoops’ deep midfield and defence allowed him run to run and shoot from 25-yards to beat Alex Smithies.

After taking a 4-0 thumping here at Carrow Road last May, the Hoops were clearly not going to allow that to happen again and decided attack was the best form of attack in the early stages but their failure to score cost them dearly.

The Norwich faithful have taken to reworking Blur’s Park Life, with ‘All The Germans, So Many Germans,’ to mark Farke’s velvet revolution at Carrow Road and QPR boss Ian Holloway was left to feel deflated once again after a trop to Norfolk.

‘The second goal finished it, top corner,’ groaned Holloway. 'We looked like a bouncy castle which had just gone down. Hopefully we are not too deflated because we were much netter than last year.

‘If we had scored first I reckon we would have gone on and won that and no one would have argued.’

Holloway made light of the stick he took from Norwich fans who were not convinced when Pawel Wszolek went down injured.

‘I was talking to Uncle Albert,’ said Holloway. 'He really looked like him. He was going on about one of my players who really was hurt.

‘It was quite amusing, I know I shouldn’t but they you go. I said to him ‘When I was in the war,’ I’m not sure he found it funny, but it was all done in fun.’

BIG INTERVIEW: Ralph Krueger on Saints’ Chinese takeover

Show/hide article…

Saints are in an historic week as fans take stock of the news that 80 per cent of the club has been sold to Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao for £210m.

Chairman Ralph Krueger has moved to allay any concerns over the deal.

While admitting he was not yet in a position to reveal the investment strategy of the new owners, he did discuss the future of the club in detail with the Daily Echo’s chief sports writer Adam Leitch.

Here is the best of what he had to say…

What are your hopes and expectations now the move has gone through?

This partnership gives us an opportunity to move differently into the global arena first of all.

It solidifies what we have at home base. It solidifies our position and strengthens our outlook.

On the business side we will be laying out our plans of investment and all of that, but let the paint dry for now. That will be for after the transfer window and into September.

I have already had a few longer phone calls but I have known them for 16 months already so it’s been a long process.

I would say initially two things for sure. There is the stability of the club as it is, and its ability to compete in the Premier League which is getting more and more difficult every day.

Let’s be honest the competition’s not sleeping, teams coming up are investing heavily and teams in the Championship are hungry to get up here, so we know there’s a lot of competition.

We are excited for the knowhow they bring with intelligence and experience clearly in the Asian market too and the opportunity that grows out of this.

Our present sponsors like Virgin Media and Under Armour are very excited about this too. Although it’s a partner from Asia they see synergies that will help us in America and so on.

My immediate answer is on both fronts a strengthening of our club and a continuing growth which is what we need to have to be competitive.

You explained the growth, so in what way is it strengthening the club?

When you have a partnership like this where Katharina is still on board and you add a very intelligent, warm businessman like Mr Gao and his family and Nelly into the equation you just get more depth right away.

For Katharina she had a feeling this was as far as she wanted to or could take the club alone and so the search for a partnership where she could stay on board, where the culture would stay intact and the way we operate stay intact. It’s not a huge leap we are looking for here.

We want this to continue the way it is, a sustainable model in the long term and where exactly that investment will come I am not in a position to list to you.

We are open and transparent and until we have had some time with their management team, our management team, all I know is there will be growth here and investment and this is the emotional change and the factual business comments will come over time. Just give us time to evolve these properly.

You must have an idea whether we are talking some incredible investment from a very wealthy benefactor or a more stable evolution?

There is no question. We don’t want to go any other way than the way we are going now.

Let’s take an example of transfer markets.

We had three summers of turbulent, volatile, high change transfer markets.

Altogether it was 19 players in and 13 players out over a few summers.

This is my fourth summer going into fifth season. First summer was six out seven in, the next was three out seven in, then five out and five in. Now we have one out and two in.

That didn’t happen because of that change of this partnership but because we had need to increase our depth charts so we had to make the transactions we did over those years to get a deeper squad which we now have.

We have a strength of contracts which I spoke about months ago, and that has allowed us to change our plan and say now we need to focus on synergies and we want to build on continuity.

Great football teams are not built by permanent change. They are built by holding groups together, by building on it.

This partnership as it was evolving to the point it was going to happen gave us the strength and the confidence to go through this window the way we have and continue forward.

I am not trying to deflect the question but first we had to be sure we found a partner who embraced the ‘Southampton Way’ and we needed a partner who wants to continue to let it evolve.

Part of the ‘Southampton Way’ is improving incrementally in all areas, whether it’s the academy, recruiting a higher level of players, a higher level of coaches, or sports science, marketing, finance department, IT. That we all continue to improve is what we do here. We don’t do the big splash. That’s not who we are. It wouldn’t fit with us.

You are asking me a cultural question. Did we look for that kind of investment? No.

I believe this is the way a club like Southampton in the position we are in needs to evolve.

I am really excited that it is on track.

I swear business yesterday and today has continued exactly as the day before the change of partnership, which is something very few clubs can say.

A lot of fans will say Katharina has now made a large profit on this football club. Most won’t begrudge her it, but fans will turn around and ask ‘what’s in it for us and the club?’

First of all we believe the fans in general have been pleased we have finished in the top eight for the last few seasons.

For Southampton Football Club looking at the decades before this has been an amazing era, a strong era of stability on and off the pitch.

We have been able to stay stable in our numbers, our performances, our expectations are growing with that stability and that’s the price you get. If you fight for relegation four years in a row you are happy to finish 13th.

We put ourselves in that position and we are not afraid of that bar we have set.

The fans have been very understanding of our process. It is not for me to judge the way the partnership has been formed, but I am certain it’s a win-win. Not only for the Gao family and Katharina but for our fans number one.

We understand why we are doing all of this and why Southampton Football Club exists.

They have trusted us in the last years. I can sense that through the communications they have with us. They trust our process at the present time and they need to continue to trust us and in the next few months we will be able to communicate where the business side of it will kick in and where the opportunity will come but they will see it happen.

What do you say to people who will ask if this investment means the club will be looking to the next level, to the top eight or top six?

We were in Europe two years in a row which nobody would have expected.

We have slipped out of that field and we want to get back into that.

We respect how hard that is. Somebody above us needs to slip and/or we need to, from the outside perspective, over perform and truly hit potential the whole way through the season.

We all know how tough it is to get back into Europe but we believe we can get back there so that is what we are striving for on a humble basis. We are not going ‘we can’ but we believe it is possible and we are going to go for that.

You know, boy oh boy, how much investment is going on ahead of us. The Premier League is really a tough league and we needed to take this step with the Gao family to take that competitive step from the position we are in right now.

I can’t sit here and give you a big list of where it’s going to go but we are already looking at opportunities to strengthen our position and compete in the future.

We are ambitious to move up, but the big splash is first of all with Financial Fair Play and the regulations not the same as it used to be ten or 15 years ago. It’s a different environment and we play within the rules.

We believe this is the better way to run a business and it’s a lot of fun.

Our board is having a lot of fun and we have a lot of continuity within the management team which is important.

Everybody is staying where they are which after most partnership changes of this magnitude you would have a seismic shift of leadership of the club.

I personally have committed to this transaction over a year ago.

This isn’t about me but I had hockey opportunities last year but this is really exciting.

I don’t want to be euphoric on a partnership and promise people the world but I have been part of the process and it’s exciting me. My chairman phase one was with Katharina alone. Phase two I just feel I am so ambitious and love to win football games above all else that I am excited. That’s a personal statement here and I have seen a lot more than anybody else has.

They are warm, they are humble, they are intelligent, and they are ambitious.

What do they actually want out of this? Fun, a hobby, an investment?

First of all as a good businessman it’s a statement of belief in the Premier League being the global leader in sports.

There is no question there is an interest to maximise and utilise the intellectual capital we have here.

For me, to tell you the truth what I like the most is I feel he is extremely competitive. He wants to have fun with this. It’s not fun as in disrespectful to the fans. For me fun is hard work, reaching your potential, go in where people don’t expect you to win. That’s fun. It’s not smiley, happy fun. It’s fun inside you doing that.

I truly feel that spirit and he love sports, he loves the game of football and he really likes this area.

He has been coming here for a few years now before this partnership. His first time in Hampshire I think was over five years ago.

I know that he loves this area of England too so there is more affinities there that will come out over time.

I feel a sportsman, and Nelly is a sportswoman, she likes sports too.

To be a fan is probably the main reason, and now to put it into play.

He has taken a lot of risks to invest and these are responsibilities that you take on so good on him he thinks this is worth doing.
