Southampton target Lazio centre-back - but not as replacement for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton are interested in Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt - but not as a replacement for Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk.

The 23-year-old joined the Biancocelesti from AZ Alkmaar in 2015 and has caught the eye of those at St Mary’s.

The Lazio defender is the subject of a £15.46m bid from Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

Southampton have already signed one player from Serie A this summer, with Mario Lemina last week joining from Juventus in a club record deal.

Poland defender Jan Bednarek of Lech Poznan is the only other player to have arrived this summer.

Wesley Hoedt to Southampton: £15m Lazio raid is not replacement for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk’s eagerness to move to a ‘big club’ has been one of this summer’s most dominant stories. The Dutchman has handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s and he remains determined to complete his dream move to Liverpool. The Reds remain keen to spend upwards of £60m on the centre-back and there have been rumours that Hoedt’s move to Southampton could see Van Dijk finally go. Hoedt joined Lazio from AZ Alkmaar in 2015 and has caught the eye of Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

Starsport understands the south coast club are keen to wrap up a deal for the 23-year-old but he is not being seen as a direct successor to Van Dijk. Southampton are ready to bid £15.5m for Hoedt and are confident of landing their man. Pellegrino has already signed one player from Serie A this summer, with Mario Lemina arriving from Juventus in a club record deal last week. Poland defender Jan Bednarek of Lech Poznan is the only other player to have joined the Saints this summer.

Van Dijk’s saga will seemingly rumble on right up until the transfer deadline. Liverpool are still the frontrunners for his signature but they face serious competition from Premier League champions Chelsea while Manchester City are in the mix as well. Without Van Dijk, Southampton could only managed a goalless draw at home to Swansea last Saturday. It is unlikely that Pellegrino will be able to call up Hoedt in time for their match against West Ham this weekend.

Academy star talks of fresh injury pain - but remains sure Saints will “look after me”

Show/hide article…

SAINTS youngster Jake Flannigan is to have surgery on his left knee next week after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during training.

The academy graduate, 21, who featured at right-back in Saints’ 2-0 victory over Sevilla in pre-season, has had a torrid two years, having suffered from previous ACL problems in his right knee.

Flannigan, who signed a new six months contract in July, now looks set to be sidelined until next year, but remains sure he’ll be looked after by the club.

This latest injury was sustained in training with the under 23s at Staplewood last week.

“I just went to shoulder barge one of the lads, I pushed off on my left knee and because I’ve had contact with him my body sort of bounced the other way,” he said.

"It was just a quick movement and my knees opened out and I did my ACL, it just snapped there and then.

“I sat there on the floor waiting for the pain to go, I recognised the pain, knew the feeling and the movement and pretty much knew straight away what happened.”

The midfielder from Eastleigh posted on social media announcing his disappointing news.

He said: “After such a promising pre-season, I’ve suffered another knee injury on my other knee. As always, ill keep going and you won’t see me give up!”

Flannigan made a positive start in pre-season, having been called up to the first team after signing a six-month contract which takes him through to December.

The deal offered Flannigan the security to push on in the coming months, but with recovery time for this type of injury being around nine months, he will go into 2018 without having a contract at the current time.

However, talks with the club are ongoing and he remains positive.

He said: “I’ve spoken to them (the club) and I think we’re going to talk about contracts a bit further down the line, but I think they’re going to look after me.”

He will now meet with his surgeon, Andy Williams, in London to next week to perform the operation and begin his rehabilitation onwards in to 2018.

Southampton chairman breaks his silence on Virgil van Dijk’s future

Show/hide article…

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger has emphatically ended Virgil van Dijk’s hopes of quitting the club this month.

Defender Van Dijk slapped in a transfer request 10 days ago in a bid to force his way out, with Liverpool , Chelsea and Manchester City all keen.

But speaking publicly for the first time since the want-away Dutchman ramped up is attempts to leave Krueger said: “Nobody is for sale that we don’t want to sell and so he is not for sale in this window. We have said it more than once.

“Mauricio Pellegrino has done an amazing job of dealing with this situation. It has not disrupted our team.

“It is not in any way caused a lack of focus in training, in the locker room, and of course everybody will open their arms when Virgil comes back and we go at it.”

Southampton’s stance on all their players has been so firm and crystal clear this summer that they are not expecting any of Van Dijk’s suitors to make a bid big enough to make them potentially reconsider.

Asked if he could say definitely that Van Dijk will still be a Southampton player on September 1, Krueger added: “I will tell you one thing. I don’t give definite answers where there isn’t a definite.

“[But] With all the knowledge I have today and all the information I have on my plate right now that is my answer as we are carrying our strategy through the summer and that’s it.

“We are being clear we are being patient and on the first of September that will be our team and we are certain that every player that is on that roster will give his best for Southampton Football Club for the rest of the season.”

Liverpool target Van Dijk is ‘not for sale’ insists Saints chairman

Show/hide article…

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger is adamant that Virgil van Dijk is “not for sale in this window” as keeping the defender is “the statement we need to make” at this juncture.

This summer has been dominated by big-money transfers and agitated players, with the future of Saints’ unsettled 26-year-old centre-back one of the more turbulent sagas.

Southampton asked the Premier League to investigate an alleged illegal approach from Liverpool in June, leading the Reds to swiftly make a remarkable statement publicly dropping their interest in Van Dijk.

Speculation continues to link the Holland international with a move to the likes of Jurgen Klopp’s side and Premier League champions Chelsea, with the defender last week taking matters into his own hands by handing in a transfer request.

Van Dijk has been training away from the main group as he attempts to force an exit, but Saints chairman Krueger has reiterated to Press Association Sport that the defender is not going anywhere.

“Virgil is not for sale in this window and it’s not personal,” the chairman said, just days after the Gao family bought an 80 per cent stake in the club.

"It’s not about him, it’s about an overall much, much, much bigger picture - a change of course for Southampton.

"The first summer I was here five players went out and six went in, not counting academy.

"Second summer three went out, seven came in, and third summer five went out, five came in.

"Now it is one out and two in, and this is who we want to become.

"We want to mature, we want to be a team that can profit from synergies that create a much more attractive football and a better product for the fans, and gives us a chance to get back into Europe.

"That’s one player in this whole equation of 25 and it is the visible one, but for us it’s the principle and it’s the path and it’s the statement we need to make to get to a new space as a club.

"We are very, very adamant about carrying this through.

“The new partnership has completely and wholly backed our strategy and plan and on September 1 people will see how serious we were and are.”

It is a big statement from a club synonymous with seeing their best players leave on annual basis.

None of Southampton’s previous stars have gone as far as to make a public transfer request, yet Krueger believes Van Dijk can be integrated into the group - and accepted, if not forgiven, by supporters.

“Well, first of all, they have experienced it here before on multiple occasions and it hasn’t been a problem,” the former head coach of the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers said.

"I can go back to Morgan Schneiderlin in our first summer and I could list others, but let’s not do that.

“We’ve had other examples of that where it was no problem, so I don’t see that as a problem.”

Krueger praised “strong leader” Mauricio Pellegrino for the way he has dealt with the situation, saying the Saints boss has kept everybody focused on the job while dealing “very well” with Van Dijk as the pair continue to communicate “openly with each other”.

Rather than lose a key player, plans are afoot to strengthen the group further before the end of the month and Press Association Sport understands Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt is among those targeted.

“We’re definitely not done,” Krueger said after Saints signed Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina and Lech Poznan defender Jan Bednarek.

"We’re looking at options but again we’re not in a position to just bring in anybody.

"It would have to be a player that would fit and tick all the boxes of our needs, not only short-term but long-term.

“Football is still active, the black box is buzzing.”

Southampton ready to evolve and eye a new era - aiming for Premier League glory

Show/hide article…

The list of big names Southampton have been forced to sell in the last 11 years would make a pretty impressive outfield team with a few handy subs too.

And all those departures have brought in almost a whopping £220m too. But their days as a selling club are over.

That was the firm message from chairman Ralph Krueger who says this is now a new era at Southampton and insisted “we are not playing games here.”

Krueger’s defiance will be music to ears of Saints supporters who have grown tired of seeing their best players, from Theo Walcott to Jose Fonte, lured away from St Mary’s in recent times.

Though it is bad news for defender Virgil Van Dijk who has handed in a transfer request in his attempts to try and leave.

Krueger said: “This summer we needed to consolidate. We needed to stop the perception out there that ‘ok, I want a player from Southampton and boom’.

“We needed to get control of that to stay competitive in the Premier League. And that’s a step we have taken and we are standing proud and tall and strong and haven’t been anything other than open and honest to everybody involved.

“We are not playing games here. This is just who we are now and a different era is beginning from what we needed to do business wise and player wise to get the numbers right.

“We had 13 Premier League players in the first summer I was here 13/14. We moved to maybe 16, to 18 to 21 and now we have 25 and it is time to consolidate.”

The “partnership” with the Chinese Gao family, who bought 80 per cent of the club for £210m last week, has helped strengthen Southampton’s position.

And Krueger insisted it is the stance they have taken all summer, not just with Van Dijk, which has shown they mean business and he is convinced will pay off on the pitch.

He said: “Everybody is personalising it on one player but there are potentially other players who could have had the same strategy or attitude and they are not.

“And we had summers where there were multiple situations like this. I see it generally. I see it as a philosophical stand, not an individual stand.

“The philosophy we put out in May we put it out for a reason. We put that out there quite clearly.

“I am sure there were doubters but it was also in the knowledge of this partnership potentially evolving that we had the courage to make a stand and say ‘this is time for Southampton to evolve.’

“In sport - take any sport and especially football - the best clubs usually in a given year, if you took the clubs that went closest to their potential in a season you would probably find eight or nine of them have a certain continuity in them.

“The ones that win championships, the ones that win gold medals, there is a continuity in the core and it was time for us to do that and we believe the fruits of that labour will end up in results.”

Krueger: Virgil will be welcomed back when he accepts he is not for sale

Show/hide article…

Saints chairman Ralph Krueger has reiterated that Virgil van Dijk is not for sale and insists he will be welcomed back with “open arms” when he accepts the club’s decision.

The Dutch centre half is continuing to push for a move away from St Mary’s, having not backed down after issuing a request last week.

Saints have remained steadfast in their approach to van Dijk, and while the Daily Echo understands they are trailing Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt among others, it is as an addition to the squad rather than a replacement for their want away 26-year-old.

Krueger said: “Our stance remains based on our strategy from May when we spoke last.

“I already told you the numbers that we have transferred in and transferred out and it is time to stop that.

“We really thought this was a good summer for that. Strength of the contracts, age of the group and the experiences of last year like going to a cup final gave us the feeling this is a group that tasted that winning and keeping them together would give us the chance to reach another level.

“Virgil is not the only player that is involved in this he is part of the whole strategy of not selling. Nobody is for sale that we don’t want to sell and so he is not for sale in this window. We have said it more than once.

“We are not done with the window yet. We are still looking at some options. I am not going to promise anything. It has got to be something that truly strengthens the squad and fits into our group.

“We are still looking and at the end of the transfer window we will see who we have and what we have.

“Mauricio has done an amazing job of dealing with this situation. It has not disrupted our team. It is not in any way caused a lack of focus in training, in the locker room, and of course everybody will open their arms when Virgil comes back and we go at it.”

Krueger was asked whether Saints would even turn down a ludicrous offer if one came in and replied: “I will tell you one thing - over the years we have spoken I don’t give definite answers where there isn’t a definite.

“With all the knowledge I have today and all the information I have on my plate right now my answer is we are carrying our strategy through the summer and that’s it. “
