McQueen nets first international call

Show/hide article…

Sam McQueen has joined Southampton teammate Jack Stephens in the England Under-21 squad for the forthcoming games against Germany and Denmark.

McQueen, who originally broke into the first team during 2014, has become an established part of Claude Puel’s squad this season, which has been rewarded with a first ever international call-up. Stephens, meanwhile will hope to add to his seven caps with one goal to-date at that level.

New U21s boss Aidy Boothroyd has named the Saints pair in his first squad since taking over from Gareth Southgate earlier this year, following the latter’s promotion to England senior boss.

McQueen and Stephens will be part of The Young Lions squad which will head to Wiesbaden for the first game against the Germans on Friday 24th March.

They will then head north across the border into Denmark to face their second hosts of the international week, at the BioNutria Park in Randers on Monday 27th March.

The trip has been organised as preparations for July’s Euro Finals in Poland continue, and follow on from November’s game against Italy, where Stephens scored the winner in a 3-2 victory at St Mary’s.

England squad: Defoe, Ward-Prowse and Shaw named in Southgate’s 26-man squad

Show/hide article…

Jermain Defoe and Luke Shaw have been included in the England squad

The 34-year-old Sunderland striker gets the call from Gareth Southgate for Wednesday’s friendly with Germany in Dortmund.

Southgate has been hit by a striker crisis with Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney both injured.

Defoe answered Southgate’s SOS - a reward for his remarkable scoring achievements at the Stadium of Light this season.

Despite the fact that Sunderland are rooted at the bottom of the table, Defoe has plundered 14 league goals this season – well over half of the Black Cats’ total tally of 24.

It’s Defoe’s first cap since 2013 after he was overlooked by former boss Roy Hodgson for Euro 2016.

Boss Southgate said: "It was important not to look at somebody’s age and dismiss them from your thinking.

"His goalscoring record generally is phenomenal, but in particular this season in a team that perhaps aren’t creating as many chances as other teams. His strike-rate is outstanding.

“I didn’t want to look at his age and think he’s finished with England.”

Redmond and Ward-Prowse earn first senior call-ups

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse have both been named in Gareth Southgate’s senior England squad for the forthcoming games against Germany and Lithuania.

The Southampton duo are included for the first time and join fellow Saints men Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand in Southgate’s first pick of the national team at this level for the games on 22nd and 26th March.

Redmond and Ward-Prowse are both well known to Southgate from their time together in the England Under-21 set-up where Redmond held 34 caps and Ward-Prowse on 27.

This is a significant milestone for both men, whose careers at international level have mirrored one another’s since their breakthrough at Under-17s, with Redmond - who is eight months senior to Ward-Prowse - having also played regularly while at previous clubs Birmingham and Norwich.

Redmond’s move to St Mary’s last summer was seen as an opportunity to take the next step in his international career, and having played 38 times across all competitions so far this season, the converted forward has scored six times.

Ward-Prowse’s call-up meanwhile, is another feather in the cap for Southampton’s flourishing academy. Last year he captained England’s Under-21 side to their first Toulon Tournament success since 1994, while he’s also scored six times since his first appearance at that level in 2013.

This season has also been a significant one at Saints for the midfielder, who has played in 33 games, including a start in last month’s EFL Cup final at Wembley.

Redmond and Ward-Prowse were each nominated for the England Under-21 Player of the Year award in 2016, with Redmond eventually taking the prize, and now both men will continue their rise through the ranks together in the national team.

This will also be the first time Southampton have had four players in a senior England squad since 2014 when Jay Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana were called up for a friendly against Denmark.

That game also saw three Saints academy graduates take to the pitch at the same time with Shaw and Lallana joined by Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, footsteps that Ward-Prowse will be aiming to follow in.

Southgate’s England travel to Dortmund to face Germany in a friendly at Signal Iduna Park next week before hosting Lithuania at Wembley in their World Cup 2018 Group F qualifier four days later.

Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Forster and Bertrand will link up with the England squad following Southampton’s Premier League game at Tottenham on Sunday.

Le Tiss hails “outstanding” Redmond

Show/hide article…

Redmond, who moved to Southampton from Norwich City last summer, has been in fine form recently, with his last outing seeing him score twice in the 4-3 victory at Watford.

That followed on from a number of eye-catching displays, including in the EFL Cup final, against Manchester United.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed by Le Tissier, who is encouraged by the improvement he has seen from him.

“Nathan’s form the last few games has been outstanding,” he said. "He was probably one of those in the first part of the season who was probably a little disappointed in some of the positions he was getting into and not finishing.

“But it now seems like he’s found his shooting boots a little bit and is looking dangerous in front of goal, which is great.”

Redmond has not been the only attacking player in great form for Saints in recent weeks, and Le Tissier has enjoyed seeing the intent they have been showing in the past couple of games, with their last three alone resulting in ten goals.

“It’s been a bit of a change from the first half of the season,” he said. "It’s great to see us scoring goals.

“Also, I think, a little bit to do with that is the lack of changes the last few games and people getting used to each other – I think that’s helped.”

Saints duo handed shock England call-ups

Show/hide article…

SAINTS duo James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond have been handed surprise England call-ups.

Ward-Prowse and Redmond have both been trusted servants under former England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate, and have now been given places in his first squad as full Three Lions boss.

It is the first time either have been picked for the senior national side, but are both vastly experienced at age group level.

The pair join fellow Saints men Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster in the England team.

Southgate’s side play Germany in Dortmund next Wednesday in a friendly before facing Lithuania at Wembley on Sunday 26 March in a World Cup qualifier.

Redmond and Ward-Prowse have been in impressive form of late, helping Saints to back-to-back Premier League wins.

Former Norwich man Redmond netted a brace in the 4-3 win at Watford last time out in the Premier League.

Both will make their senior debuts if they appear in the coming games.

In total SIX Saints players have been included in England squad’s today after Sam McQueen was handed a place in the under-21s team for the first time.

Ward-Prowse admitted in today’s Daily Echo that it would be “perfect” to be selected by Southgate, who gave him his under-21s debut back in 2013.

Southgate: Saints duo ‘deserve the opportunity’

Show/hide article…

England manager Gareth Southgate says that senior squad debutants James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond have been rewarded for their work at Under-21 level.

Southgate, who worked with both Southampton men during his time as the Young Lions boss, has called Redmond and Ward-Prowse into his first selection as England manager, to give the pair a taste of what to expect.

Ward-Prowse and Redmond join fellow Saints men Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand in the squad, as the club has a total of four players in the senior squad for the first time since 2014.

“They are players we’ve worked with before and players who are in excellent form with their club,” Southgate said of the two debutants.

“They both performed very well in a pressured environment of a cup final with Southampton.

“I think we are aiming for those guys to go in the Under-21s Euros this summer, but also we didn’t want to hold them back – they deserve the opportunity as they’ve been performing very well in or junior age groups for a long time now.

“They’re two that we wanted to introduce to the senior environment and see how they get on.”

McQueen gets first England Under-21s call

Show/hide article…

SAINTS man Sam McQueen has been called up to the England Under-21s squad for the first time.

The Southampton-born full-back joins team-mate Jack Stephens in Aidy Boothroyd’s squad for games against Germany and Denmark.

Stephens has been a key part of Saints’ team at central defence lately in the absence of Virgil van Dijk.

McQueen has had a breakthrough season under Claude Puel at St Mary’s, making 19 appearances in all competitions this term.

Under-21s captain James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond have not been included in the roster becuase they are involved with Gareth Southgate’s first-team.

McQueen and Huddersfield’s Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown have been handed maiden under-21s call-ups, while Joe Gomez, Solly March and Cauley Woodrow all return to the fold.

Boothroyd said: “Izzy did well on loan in Holland, he came back and now he’s thriving in the Championship.

“Him and Sam deserve their chance, just like Tammy Abraham deserved his chance when I picked him last year.

“As for Joe, Solly and Cauley, they are three players that have been in the squad before so it will be nice to welcome them back. They all deserve to be here.”

The Young Lions face back-to-back away internationals against Germany (on Friday 24 March) and Denmark (Monday 27 March) as preparations continue for this summer’s European Championship finals.
