Ward-Prowse: Well-rested Saints aiming to derail Spurs momentum
Show/hide article…
Southampton are aiming to derail Tottenham’s momentum on Sunday afternoon, according to Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse.
Spurs have been installed as clear favourites ahead of the Premier League clash, having avoided defeat in 14 top-flight fixtures on home turf this season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side occupy second place in the table and will be determined to secure all three points in order to tighten their grip on a top-four position.
But Southampton will travel to White Hart Lane in decent form, courtesy of back-to-back victories over Sunderland and Watford.
And Ward-Prowse is keen to notch up a win prior to the international break after enjoying an extended period without a game since claiming a thrilling 3-2 win at Vicarage Road.
“We showed great character in the way that we bounced back and showed the depth of that character in the win at Watford,” the 22-year-old told Southampton’s official website.
“Football revolves around momentum and I think we can carry into the Tottenham game.
“They’ve got a bit of momentum themselves and I think it’ll be an important game to win heading into that international break."
Spurs have blown several teams away in N17 this term, but are expected to be without star striker Harry Kane for the foreseeable future.
The 23-year-old has suffered ankle ligament damage and it is not yet clear when he will be able to return to action.
Heung-min Son and Vincent Janssen will be expected to fill the Englishman’s void but Saints defender Cedric Soares is convinced Claude Puel’s side have a real chance to cause an upset.
“They are very well-organised and of course it’s going to be tough but we are definitely in a good moment.
“Everyone feels that and we breed confidence right now so I think if we go there and play our game we will have our chance,” said the Portuguese.

The Inside Track: Tottenham Hotspur
Show/hide article…
Second in the league and in an FA Cup semi-final, it all seems to be going well on the face of it for Spurs this season. Do you agree?
It’s probably going better than expected in terms of the start to the season. Spurs were third last season, but you would have expected a lot of the teams with [Pep] Guardiola at City, [José] Mourinho going to Man United and [Antonio] Conte coming to Chelsea, then [Jürgen] Klopp having his first full season you would have expected to push on too. Despite the money that some of those clubs have spent they’re not in a better position than last season and Spurs have spent less, so to get into the semi-finals of the FA Cup is definitely a good thing.
It’s a shame from their point of view that the semi-final line-up is so strong. It would be a great one to go and win. The one disappointment from the season so far is the Champions League. It was only their second season in the competition and the first time they got to the quarter finals and they played Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, they were some really good nights and the hope was that this team would be able to emulate that, but they didn’t, they fell short and then immediately went out in the Europa League against a team they really should have beaten.
Europe will be the disappointment but we’re at the stage now where, particularly with Harry Kane injured now, you start to wonder if it’s a blessing in disguise.
The players won’t look at it that way but if Spurs were to finish in the top four or even get second then that would be above expectations for the season and if they can win the FA Cup then it would be a doubly brilliantly season.
How will Harry Kane’s expected absence this weekend affect Tottenham?
Very much so. He’s scored 15 goals in the last 13 games and he was probably the in-form player in the Premier League, scoring twice against Stoke recently. I don’t think they’ll change their approach, I think they’ll probably be 3-4-2-1 again. They’ve played that system with full backs for a few weeks now and I think that’s definitely been their best formation. I would be surprised if they changed away from that.
If Mauricio Pochettino is worried that three attacking players isn’t going to be enough then he might change back to 4-2-3-1 which would enable them to play four attacking players instead of three, but Spurs have looked so much better in the system they’ve been playing recently and you can see the number of goals they’ve scored playing that way. I think it will be a straight swap by bringing Heung-min Son in for Kane.
Spurs beat Southampton 4-1 in December. Will Saints find it as tough this time?
Spurs are very good usually defensively at White Hart Lane with something like seven league goals conceded all season and two of those came very recently in a game against Everton in a game they went on to win anyway. Southampton will have their work cut out to get a goal against Spurs, but Gabbiadini looks a really clever player with a really nice touch with good finishing as well, so he looks the part. I always like Bertrand, each time he plays he looks good too.
How do you see Sunday’s game going?
I would predict a win for Spurs, their home form has been that good, you’d be silly not to really, but with Saints being the last team to win there it gives all the more reason for no complacency.
The key for Spurs recently has been very fast starts. In their recent games, the one against Millwall they took the lead in the 31st minute and that was the latest they’d gone ahead for five games, so they’ve been putting an emphasis on starting games very, very quickly, to get an early goal. A lot of teams come to Spurs to defend, and if you can get an early goal, it makes a huge difference as teams have to change their plans to start coming out earlier than they planned which opens up space for Spurs to score more and get the game won relatively early. It’s been a theme recently and a real strength for the team. The question will be whether they can do the same without Kane, or whether his absence means they find that a bit tougher.

Police investigating historic child abuse quiz man over ‘incidents linked to Southampton FC’
Show/hide article…
A Southampton man has been interviewed under caution by police investigating historic child abuse in relation to incidents ‘linked to Southampton Football Club’, it has been reported.
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed in a statement that officers interviewed a 64-year-old man, who cannot be named, under caution in a police custody suite.
The interview was part of Hampshire Constabulary’s investigation into allegations of non-recent child abuse within the football community (Operation Quantum).
The statement added: “This remains an active, significant, and complex investigation undertaken by specialist officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Team.
“Officers still encourage any victims of such abuse to contact detectives from our designated Operation Marmion team on 101, or call the 24 hour NSPCC hotline on 0800 023 2642.”

Tottenham vs Southampton: Premier League preview
Show/hide article…
Tottenham end a run of five consecutive games at home with the visit of Southampton in the Premier League and without star striker Harry Kane.
Kane suffered ankle ligament damage in the 6-0 FA Cup win over Millwall and is not expected to return before the end of April.
Spurs win over Everton on March 5 secured a club-record nine consecutive wins at White Hart Lane, where they have not tasted defeat since Southampton came to town in May last year.
Southampton have not been in action since a dramatic 4-3 away win at Watford on the same weekend, the second game on the trot they netted four times, and will no doubt be keen to all but extinguish their former manager’s title bid.
Tottenham host Southampton with kick-off scheduled for 2.15pm on Sunday, March 19.
The match will be televised live on Sky Sports 1, with coverage starting from 1pm. Alternatively, you can follow all the build-up and action from 1.15pm with Standard Sport’s London Football live blog. Enter your email address below to be informed when coverage begins.
Harry Kane is the latest key first-team member to be sidelined, with Danny Rose already out, with a second ankle ligament injury of the season.
Heung-min Son - who scored a hat-trick against Millwall - will likely deputise, but Vincent Janssen’s first goal this season from open play in the same game has boosted his chances.
Elsewhere, Mauricio Pochettino will likely stick with the same 10 who have featured in recent weeks.
Southampton have had two weeks to prepare and recuperate players, but the game will come too soon for Charlie Austin and Matt Targett.

Ward-Prowse waits on “perfect” call from Southgate
Show/hide article…
JAMES Ward-Prowse admits it would be “perfect” if Gareth Southgate was to hand him a shock England call-up to his first Three Lions squad today.
Southgate named Ward-Prowse in his first-ever England Under-21s team in August 2013 and last year handed him the captaincy of the young Lions side.
Now Southgate is preparing to name his first Three Lions roster as permanent boss today and there could be a surprise repeat if Ward-Prowse is given the nod.
“That would be perfect,” said Ward-Prowse. “But it’s one of those things where I have to prove myself on a weekly basis that I can play in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old midfielder has been mooted for possible selection for the games against Germany and Lithuania, alongside Saints team-mate Nathan Redmond, who was also named in Southgate’s first under-21s squad.
Both Saints men have been in fine form of late, helping Claude Puel’s side to back-to-back Premier League triumphs.
Although Ward-Prowse, who was called a “big prospect” by ex-England boss Roy Hodgson, is excited by the idea of playing for his country, he is convinced he’s yet to prove worthy of a call.
He said: “You never know though it would obviously be a great achievement and a great honour to do so.
“At the end of it though I just need to focus on what I’m doing with the club at the minute.
“If I can carry on starting regularly and playing to a high level that call will come eventually.
“Regardless of whether I get a call up or not I want to just keep on working hard to try and achieve it.”
Southgate is said to be ready to name an extended squad for the upcoming games because of a potential injury crisis.
With Jordan Henderson out injured and with AFC Bournemouth’s Arsenal loan man Jack Wilshere falling out favour at the Cherries lately, there seems there might be an opportunity in midfield.
What might help Ward-Prowse’s cause is his close relationship with Southgate, who he worked with for more than three years with the under-21s.
He has already been involved in training with the seniors under the 46-year-old during his interim reign and the Saints man says “couldn’t think of a better person to lead the country’s football team”.
“He’s a great manager to play for not only as a footballing person but a man as well,” Ward-Prowse said of the England boss.
“He’s a great person to be around and I’ve had a lot of highs working with him and a few lows as well.
“But he’s given me a good platform and I’ve enjoyed every minute of working under him.”
Ward-Prowse believes Southgate, who replaced Sam Allardyce as national team boss, is the right fit for England long term.
“I think he is,” he said. “He’s certainly not afraid of bringing young players through.
“Through my experience of working with him I couldn’t think of a better person to lead the country’s football team and help the team develop and grow.”
While Ward-Prowse is keen to keep his own feet on the ground over a potential call-up, he wasn’t scared to back Saints team-mate Redmond for selection.
The in form 22-year-old netted a brace in the 4-3 win at Watford last time out and Southgate has been heavily tipped to call-up his former under-21 prodigy.
“He’s come into the club and done fantastically well, especially in recent weeks he’s performed very well and contributed a lot to the games,” Ward-Prowse said.
“But he’s got a good head on him, he works very hard.
“In training he’s always showing glimpses of what he can do and if he gets that call it wouldn’t be a surprise.”
England play Germany in Dortmund next Wednesday in a friendly before facing Lithuania at Wembley on Sunday 26 March in a World Cup qualifier.

UPDATE: Hampshire Police quiz man over allegations of historic sex abuse in football
Show/hide article…
POLICE investigating allegations of historic sex abuse in football have questioned a man in Hampshire, it has been revealed.
The 64-year-old was questioned by officers from Hampshire Police carrying out an investigation into allegations of non-recent child abuse within the football community – Operation Quantum.
The man has been questioned by officers in a police custody suite, the force has confirmed.
The investigation is believed to be linked to claims of incidents at Southampton Football Club in the 1980s.
A police spokesman said: “This remains an active, significant, and complex investigation undertaken by specialist officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Team.”
The Daily Echo previously reported how the football club had contacted police over allegations of historical child abuse within football in December.
It came about after two ex-Saints youngsters said they were both victims of sexual abuse they suffered in the 1980s.
Last November, a number of police forces from across the UK launched investigations into allegations of abuse and a dedicated NSPCC helpline for football received 860 calls in its first week.
So far, ten suspects have been identified as the scandal continues to grow.
The Echo previously reported that Greater Manchester Police had said it was investigating reports from 35 people, with its inquiry growing on a “daily basis”.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council also confirmed around 350 people across the country had reported abuse allegations.
In a statement released in December by Southampton FC, the club said: “Hampshire Police and Southampton Football Club are committed to working together to investigate any historical allegations that may be brought to light in the Hampshire area.
“The club has informed Hampshire Police that we will offer our full support to any investigation they undertake, for as long as it takes, and with our full focus.
“The club works closely and tirelessly with the Premier League to promote the safeguarding of children and young people who are under our care or using our facilities, and their well-being is paramount to all staff.”
The Daily Echo has contacted Southampton FC following yesterday’s news, but were unable to comment.
Officers are still encouraging any victims of such abuse to contact detectives from their designated Operation Marmion team on 101 or by calling the 24-hour NSPCC hotline on 0800 023 2642.
