We want to bounce back, says Cook

Show/hide article…

Saints travel to Twerton Park for the group encounter on Thursday, having suffered a 1-0 defeat against Swansea City in the same competition at the beginning of the week.

“It’s a big game now in the group,” explained Cook.

“There’s only two left so it’s a really big game for us and a great opportunity to bounce back quickly after Swansea.

“We’ve made sure we’ve nailed our recovery and got our minds and bodies set, so the quick turnaround is good for us to get back out there and show what we can really do.”

The Robins ran out 2-1 victors when they visited Staplewood Campus back in September, as Shawn McCoulsky’s brace secured the win.

And Cook knows Saints will have to be on the right side of the scoreline this time around if they are to keep their hopes of qualification alive.

“For us, it’s trying to return the favour,” he continued.

“They beat us at our place back in September so it’s down to us now to go there and pick up a win at theirs.

“They will be a physical side but will mix it up between playing and going long, so we need to match them and dictate the play.”

Tadić revels in latest role

Show/hide article…

The Saints playmaker was a major source of creativity during Saturday’s 4-0 win at the Stadium of Light, laying on the assist for Manolo Gabbiadini’s second goal and proving a thorn in the side of the Black Cats defence throughout the afternoon.

Having operated in an advanced central position, as part of a 4-2-3-1 formation, Tadić felt he was able to express himself fully.

"We were working on a different system and I think [it was the] best system for us,” he told reporters after the match.

"We showed this, we did good work. Immediately, we had four offensive players. You have good balance between offence and defence and there is more space for everyone to play.

“In the national team, I was playing in that system and I can have a good influence on the game.

"This is my best position in that system and I can show even more how I play.”

Tadić believes the result, which lifted Saints into 11th position, came at a vital time.

"It was very important,” he said. "We knew the importance of this game. It was like a final for us.

"We did not start the first ten minutes as good, but after that we made a few passes, we showed character and, most importantly, we got three points.

“We just need to keep working and believing in ourselves."

Southampton striker Charlie Austin admits fault after cyclist hurt in crash

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Charlie Austin has admitted his role in a road crash which left a cyclist seriously injured and vowing never to ride again.

Austin’s Bentley collided with father-of-one Anthony Grey, causing injuries to his head, neck and toes.

Grey, 37, told how the collision in the East Park Terrace area of Southampton last October left him needing a five-hour operation to insert a metal plate in his spine.

Speaking to the Southern Daily Echo, Grey pledged never to get on a bicycle again, adding: “It is just not safe to cycle in Southampton.”

It has emerged that Austin voluntarily attended an interview under caution and admitted driving without due care and attention. He now has the option of either attending a driver awareness course or going to court.

Meanwhile, Grey was issued with a fixed penalty notice for contravening a red traffic light.

Austin came to help him following the crash, and Grey now wants to meet the footballer to bring closure.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "We were called to a collision at 5.30 p.m. on October 18 on East Park Terrace, Southampton, involving a Bentley and a cyclist.

"The 37-year-old cyclist from Southampton suffered injuries to his head, neck and toes and was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment. The 27-year-old driver from Southampton voluntarily attended an interview under caution.

"He admitted driving without due care and attention and now has the option of either attending a driver awareness course or attending court.

“The cyclist was issued a fixed penalty notice for contravening a red traffic light.”

Graeme goes from ‘learning to walk again’ after Saints injury to managing Glasgow Rangers

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints defender Graeme Murty is calling for a stark improvement from his Glasgow Rangers players after his first match in charge.

Murty was handed the reins less than 48 hours before Sunday’s William Hill Scottish Cup visit of Morton and led the team to a 2-1 fifth-round victory.

The former Scotland international has thanked his players for their co-operation following Mark Warburton’s shock departure.

But the Rangers Under-20s coach has left them in no doubt that he wants a major improvement in performance for Sunday’s Premiership encounter with Dundee.

Murty said: “I was pleased with their attitude, I was pleased with the way they handled themselves because it is not easy and your head is all over the place.

“It is difficult to try and please a new manager, even though consciously you’re not doing it you’re just playing the game, but subconsciously you are always looking at: ‘What does he want? What is he after?’ “But they got past a really challenging start when we conceded the goal and I have just shown them in analysis that there were some really good bits of play, we just didn’t sustain it.

“The difference between our good bits and where we want to improve are a bit stark at the moment.”

The 42-year-old added: “We have talked about portioning those things up and I have come away from the analysis with a really positive outlook on it and I hope they have as well.

“I want to thank them because it has made my transition a bit easier, it could have been really awkward.”

Murty’s coaching career started with the Saints academy after he was forced to retire from playing due to injuries suffered in his short playing time at St Mary’s.

Signed on a free by his former Reading boss Alan Pardew in the summer of 2009, Murty played the first four games of the new season before picking up a knee injury in a League Cup loss to Birmingham.

On returning to action in November 2009, he played only five more matches before suffering an even worse injury in training.

“’I blocked a shot from David Connolly and my left foot landed on the ball,” Murty has since recalled. “My ankle twisted and I fell and landed in an extreme position. All my body weight went through my ankle and everything went.’ Murty had dislocated his ankle and ruptured two ligaments. He underwent two operations, had tendon taken from the back of his knee to create new ‘ligaments’ and had nerve tissue removed to relieve the pain.

“I spent 18 months learning how to walk again.

“I spent a lot of time on crutches so I had to sort out the kinks that that put in my body where I’d lift my hip up and not use my ankle properly while my knees and hamstrings weren’t firing properly.

“It was about re-educating my body to work and it took a long time.”

Murty took up a coaching role in the Saints academy in 2012 and stayed there until moving to Norwich in 2014. He moved onto Rangers last summer, taking over as the club’s main development coach.

Ex-Saint Pochettino sidesteps Barcelona speculation

Show/hide article…

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has sidestepped suggestions he could be next in line to take over at Barcelona.

Barca’s season is on the brink of collapse after they were thrashed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

They also trail table-topping Real Madrid by a point in La Liga, having played two games more than the league leaders.

Their crushing loss at the Parc des Princes has intensified speculation about the future of Barcelona boss Luis Enrique and Pochettino is well-known in Spain after his three years in charge at Espanyol.

Asked about if he would be interested in taking over at the Nou Camp, the former Saints boss said: "It’s important to be focused on the game tomorrow.

"I can’t say anything about that. I’m at Tottenham. I am very happy, I have four more years on my contract, I’m enjoying an exciting project.

“It’s true it’s not an easy project, but I’m very happy here.”

Pochettino, whose first managerial job was Espanyol in early 2009, walked out on Saints in May 2014 to take over at White Hart Lane.

Mourinho admits “trouble” looming ahead of Saints final

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho admits he faces a “really complicated” fixture pile-up ahead of Manchester United’s League Cup final against Saints.

Claude Puel’s squad today reconvene at Staplewood after being given four days off to rest and relax with their families before tomorrow jetting off for a training camp in Spain. The players return to England early next week to finish off their Wembley preparations on home soil.

Mourinho, on the other hand, has three games to navigate before the Wembley final, starting tonight against St Etienne in the Europa League.

United then take on Blackburn in the FA Cup on Sunday before the return European trip to France next Wednesday. That then gives them just three clear days off before the final.

Mourinho has described the situation as a “nonsense”, and was on fighting form again when facing the media.

He said: "We cannot choose competitions at Manchester United.

"We know our situation is really complicated.

"The Europa League is a competition where we play on Thursdays and that makes it even more difficult for us.

"With the accumulation of FA Cup, League Cup and match postponed it is really hard for us.

“If you progress in the competitions, we will be in trouble in April and May. But we cannot choose competitions so we play to win.”

United have played 38 competitive games this season, including 25 in the Premier League, five in the EFL Cup and two in the FA Cup.

Tonight’s Europa League last-32 first leg tie at Old Trafford will be their seventh in this season’s competition. That cup provides United with one of two possible routes into next season’s Champions League.

United are sixth in the Premier League, two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with 13 matches remaining.

Mourinho added: "We have two doors still open. But we are in the last 32 - not eight or four so there is a long way to go.

“There is also a long way to go in the Premier League.”

Mourinho has previously said: “I think Southampton will have 15 days without football before the final and we are going to have in these 15 days two matches against St Etienne and the next round of the FA Cup so the calendar in the best country of world football is nonsense.

“In a realistic way I think the Premier League is almost an impossible mission but I just think about winning the next match and the next match is not an impossible mission.

“In the League Cup we have a 50 per cent chance of winning it. In the FA Cup we are in the last 16. In the Europa League we are in the last 32, so lots of matches to play.”

Mourinho will be looking to try and keep a few players fresh for the final, and has overlooked Saints academy product Luke Shaw for a fourth successive match, raising fresh questions over the Manchester United left-back’s future.

A double leg break brought last season to a premature - and horrific - end for the 21-year-old, who has struggled to make his mark under Mourinho.

Niggling injuries on the comeback trail have disrupted his campaign but, despite being fit since mid-January, Shaw has made just one appearance against Wigan in the FA Cup fourth round.

The left-back was not involved in the subsequent three squads and Mourinho confirmed the England international will not feature tonight.

“He’s not playing,” Mourinho said. “Because my team is playing well and I am happy with my back four, and I’m going to repeat (Antonio) Valencia, (Eric) Bailly, (Chris) Smalling, (Daley) Blind.”

The Portuguese has decided against risking Michael Carrick and captain Wayne Rooney, confirming the duo would be reduced to a watching brief along with the injured Phil Jones.

“Phil is still recovering from the injury,” Mourinho said. "Wayne and Carrick I don’t want to say ‘injuries’ because I don’t think we are speaking about injuries.

"We are speaking about little muscular problems and protection of these problems “So all three are out and apart from that everything is right.”

Extra tickets secured for Wembley

Show/hide article…

In light of this, the club has decided to put these on sale from midday today and allow Official Members who have attended at least three AWAY games this season to be given the chance to secure a seat.

Please note, Official Members who have purchased at least two home games this season will still be able to buy tickets from 9am today, as scheduled.

The full sales criteria is now as follows:

Thursday 16th February:

– 9am: Official Members who have attended at least TWO home games from the 2016/17 season

– Midday: Official Members who have attended at least THREE away games from the 2016/17 season

Tickets will be sold online only. All competitive first-team games (league, domestic cup and European) count towards the criteria.

To date, tickets for the clash with Manchester United, at Wembley, have been on sale to Official Members who have purchased a set number of home games.

However, we recognise that it is not simple for all fans to make it to St Mary’s, and that some instead choose to follow the team on a regular basis away from home.

We are extremely grateful for this support, and would like to acknowledge that commitment by allowing those fans the opportunity to purchase seats at Wembley.

Please note, we expect these to be the final sets of ticketing criteria for the final.
